Hurons Police and Fire Boats: Protecting Boaters Near and Far
By Lisa Yako For a few months of every year, the Huron River and the waters of Lake Erie around Huron become a major vacation destination, with beach goers and boaters seeking both pleasure and trophy fish. This influx of people and boats creates a unique situation for ensuring the safety of Hurons residents and visitors. Hence, since the early 1990s, Huron has maintained both a police and fire boat. Both boats have been found useful in a wide array of situations. As a resident, you might be curious as to exactly what these boats can do and from where the funding comes for their services. Here is a summary:
The 2013-2014 Huron River Fest Court: Miss Destini Smith, Queen; Miss LiAnna Schwerer, 1st Runner-up; Miss Ashtyn Stadler, 2nd Runner-up
the 2011-2012 Queen, Emily Wiseman returned to the stage to ever so elegantly entertain the crowd with a solo. Lehrer and Justus very genuinely introduced each contestant and then asked the questions provided by the judges to the participants. Saturday morning a Queens Brunch was held at Huron High School in honor of Justus and the 2012-2013 Huron River Fest Court. Over ninety participants attended the brunch prior to the Lions Club parade. During the brunch the 2012-2013 Court gave their farewell speeches and passed down their Royalty pins to the new Court. The Queens Brunch was sponsored by Mesenburgs Catering as they provided the delicious fare. Queen Destini and her Court rode together in the Lions Club River Fest Parade aboard a rather large vessel provided by South Shore Marine. The Huron River Fest Committee is very grateful of businesses such as South Shore Marine for not only being a loyal sponsor to the event, but for their continued commitment to the young ladies over the years. The Huron River Fest Committee wishes to extend their appreciation and gratefulness to Miss Lilly Justus, and the 2012-2013 Huron River Fest Court and their families. The energy they put toward their presence in the Huron Community as leaders and representatives of the Huron River Fest far exceeded that of the Huron River Fests expectations. Best wishes to all of you as you move forward and continue to represent yourself and hopefully your community.

Road to ease traffic constraints near the plant. IAC is the fifth largest employer in Erie County and the largest employer in Huron. Hence, it was imperative for both the County and the City that IAC remain in Huron. The tax footprint that IAC represents for the City is a huge economic input. The Citys budget will see the impact of this expansion. explained City Manager, Andy White. Though the City was simply recognized by Team NEO with a trophy, White feels the benefits to the City are much farther reaching. The benefit to the City is truly the increased exposure and getting out into the marketplace through the media puts us on the radar of those in the Cleveland area. Further, he stated This is a big accomplishment for this area, especially in consideration of with whom we were competing. This award will truly help Huron in promoting the 25 acres of available land at the corporate park and promoting
Hurons plans for future development of the downtown and the ConAgra site. Huron has undertaken long-term planning, and we are ready for growth. declared White. Many congratulations go to our City leaders for their efforts in promoting Huron and in receiving recognition for their efforts. Great job!

ALEXANDERS LESSON
Sounds good my man, Seeya soon, ill tw This was the final text of Alexander Heit, a 22-year-old University of Northern Colorado student. Before Alexander could send this text, police say he drifted his car into oncoming traffic and suddenly jerked his wheel causing the car to veer off the road and roll. Alexander died on October 13, 2012 as a result of this crash. Alexanders parents released this text to help educate all of us as to the dangers of texting while driving. Ohio law has caught up with this technology. It is now illegal to use a hand-held electronic wireless communication devise (like a cell phone) to write, send or read a text while driving in Ohio. These laws also apply when you are sitting at a light or stuck in traffic. If you are under the age of 18 years, the law goes further and prohibits the use of any wireless communication devise while driving. That means: No texting; No emailing; No talking on your cell phone, Bluetooth, Bluetooth speakers, OnStar or similar devise; No computers, laptops or tablets; No playing video games; and No using a GPS (unless it is a voice-operated or hands free devise). Please review Ohio Revised Code Section 4511.204 and 4511.205 in regards to the laws pertaining to texting and the use of electronic wireless communication devises. The Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles websites (BMV) also has a good explanation of this law. See www.bmv.ohio.gov. Alexanders death should be a lesson to all of us. We need to consider the consequences while we drive and engage in any activity that diverts our attention from driving. Articles appearing in this column are intended to provide broad, general information about the law. Before applying this information to a specific legal problem, readers are urged to seek advice from an attorney.

Lou Gehrig was famous for baseball. Hawkings is an international figure in physics and mathematics. Brian is a local leader in the almost invisible world of ballroom dancing. Over the past 5 years Brian has been a tireless leader in making ballroom dancing available to people in Erie county, and next week on July 20 a non-profit organization he founded several years ago (USA Dance Sandusky Chapter 2094) is sponsoring a benefit for him. Brians weight is down to under a hundred pounds, he is seldom able to move without help, and he will need complex and sophisticated medical care to continue living. This benefit is to provide area ballroom dancers an opportunity to show their support for him by putting on demonstrations of ballroom dancing and assembling for several hours, interacting with each other on the dance floor, and making a small donation. Ballroom dancers who
know Brian are coming from Akron and Cleveland and Columbus to help put on this benefit. The hall will probably be too small, and the parking will fill the streets bordering Columbus Avenue. Children will cry, food will get spilled on the dance floor, the air conditioning may fail, and guests may not all find seats, but it will happen, somehow....and maybe will be repeated. Hurons leading dance studio.... All About Dancing....... is sending Roger and Mimi Krempa to put on a waltz demonstration. Other local dance studios are getting involved as you read this.. Black Tie Dance Studio in Sandusky is hosting the event at Knights of Columbus Hall on Columbus Avenue in Sandusky, starting at 6:30 pm Saturday, July 20. Admission at the door is $5 and the money will go into a bank account for Brians benefit.
