It only seems like yesterday we had our first training followed by trials & hitting the court for the first time. 2013 sees us fielding 3 senior & 7 junior teams in the competition & its great to see the red & blue & the support of our Club on display each week. Weve been hard at work behind the scenes organising various fundraising activities. Please continue your support of these events. While its wonderful to have our shed there, we still have work to do & loans to repay. I just want to take this opportunity to thank the Committee, Coaches, Umpires & Team Managers for the hard work that they do & the time that you give to our Club. We have so many people that put their hand up & without you all, we would not have the success both on & off the court that we do. Some of you do not have titles but the work you do, however small a commitment you feel that is, does not go unnoticed. We have many wonderful sponsors that have supported the Club this season. Please support them whenever you can & mention the Echunga Netball Club when you do. Our Patrons also provide wonderful support to the Club & it's been great to see many of you at the courts on a Friday night or Saturday or helping us in whatever way you can offer. Many of you have had a long connection with our Club & for you to keep giving back is appreciated. Thankyou to you all

As we hit the end of the season, I also want to remind you all, that the Echunga Netball Club plays hard, strong, team netball & in a spirit of sportsmanship that also recognises the respect that everyone contributing to the game deserves. Good luck for the rest of the season & lets see lots of Red & Blue at Woodside throughout the finals matches

2013 A Grade Report
Captain Felicity Duffield, Co-Vice Captains, Ashleigh Broadbent & Tiffany Vears, Bridget Sheehan, Wendy Paech, Kristy Newman, Jade Vanzo & Emily Bradley have made a tremendous start to the 2013 season as Echunga reemerge as an A Grade contender. Our first game against Hahndorf was very much a get to know you match as team personnel were still being finalised the Thursday night before. To the teams credit they had a good win by 17 and have excelled and built on this solid grounding, another good win against Littlehampton by 24 and we found ourselves in 2nd position. Lobethal Lutheran came next indoors as we held fast against their undisciplined rough tactics and remained in 2nd position, winning by 7. Woodside Warriors came next and again we came away with another solid win by 24, as Lobethal looked on worried at our strong commitment to the ball despite our Captain sitting on the bench due to an unwelcome cold. Along came our first lot of bad news, Emily had been away on a school trip and has injured her knee shes unavailable until at least July. Lobethal next and an uncharacteristic first 3 quarters saw us behind by 11, but a much better final quarter reminded the Tigers of who they were up against as we suffered our first loss by a mere 7 goals. Thanks to Alex Bradley who sat on our bench just in case! Our next lot of Bittersweet news Jade Vanzo announces that she is having her second child and will not be able to continue the season, as we congratulate Jade and family, wishing them all the best, the A Grade is currently down to 6 players and anxiously, though patiently awaiting the return of Emily Bradley, which we have a good news update, shell be back (all going well) early August. Thank you to Carmen Harkness who has stepped in to fill in for Emily and Jade. Carmen got a very quick taste of nail biting netball as we came up against Nairne, we came away with a 1 goal win in what turned out to be a rather physical match with all players competing to the last whistle. Thank you to Amy Nicholls who sat on the bench for us Just in Case! This week also saw Lobethal lose to Loby Luth and all of a sudden we find ourselves in 3rd position! Mt Barker are next and have crept in to 2nd spot on the ladder ahead of us, so now this game has become a fight for 2nd spot. Alex Bradley joined the girls on the court for the 2nd half of this match as Kristy sat on the bench due to her unwelcome cold, and the team win comfortably by 28. Stop Press: Lobethal have lost to Nairne which puts us in first place on the ladder! First half of the round completed. We meet Hahndorf again and for some reason, I am as nervous as I was in Round 1 and 2. Perhaps I was worried about complacency? The team take the court and go about their business, solidly working, committed to the ball, focussed, team spirit engaged, supportive of each other, for ever looking for the easy option, in front, they begin to dominate all over the court. We win by 40. There is no disrespect to their opposition as they go about their business of winning the ball, no giggling, joking or laughing at their opponents. Thank you to Amy Nicholls who replaced Carmen at half time, Hahndorf play 3 League players for the second half and still we dominate against this tactic as Echunga always have for as long as I have played here! Still 100 % focus from the entire team, despite the changes! Out of all the games I think this one is the one that I am most proud of, the focus & concentration the team showed and the respect that they gave their opposition was one of a true champion team and an absolute credit to each and every one of them and the Club as a whole. Well done and Congratulations I am so proud to be a part of this team! Littlehampton round 9; the weather is Wintry the courts are slippery and Littlehampton is hungry for a win, but again our team spirit and bond remained unbroken, through rain, hail and shine, as the girls combined together to hold fast and finish the game ahead by 8! Thank you so much to Jess Bell who sat on the bench for us again Just in Case! Five matches left to the finals, well take it game by game and finish as strongly as we started. Also a special thanks to Gillian Broadbent our Team Manager and Annette Bradley who is always there to lend a hand! Good Luck girls, believe in yourselves, trust each other, and fire towards the finish!! Leslie Vears

2013 B1 Report
The B1 team started the season extremely well with a hard fought 3 goal win against Gumeracha. Alex Bradley & Shannon Earle combined beautifully in goals and were backed up by some great defence from Carmen Harkness & Hannah Whittall who finally made it onto the court after a slight Jewellery malfunction! The only blemish to the game was an injury to Amy Nicholls which would keep her on the sidelines for the next few weeks. Our next game was against Hahndorf which we won quite easily. The girls worked extremely well as a team & Jess Bell in her first senior game & Emily Northcott were starting to find their feet in the mid court, again this was finished off with some great shooting by Alex & Shannon. We came up against the Lions next in what would prove to be a bit more of a challenge. Missing 2 of our players meant some positional changes had to be made, and even though everyone tried their best, the Lions proved to be too accurate. A win against Hahndorf Lutheran was followed by another one against Lobethal in horrendous conditions. The girls braved the cold & rain to play some amazing Netball, Bec Nicholls was outstanding in defence & Emily Young shone in the mid court on a very dreary day. After the long weekend, an easy win against Nairne has been followed by 3 losses. Some teams coming up after regrading hasnt helped our position on the ladder but I look forward to working with the girls over the coming weeks and finding some winning form in the race to the Finals. 2013 17 Div 2 Report
Player numbers have been an issue in the 17s with injury and holidays effecting the team regularly. Lucy Northcott, Millie Cummings, Kelly Chadbourne, Logan Long, Emily Young and Alana Girke are the 6 team members with Lucille Lott having to stop playing after the 1st game because of knee issues. Bec Nicholls kindly took up the offer to become a permanent fill in after the 2nd game of the season and has fitted in nicely with the rest of the girls. After resting the knee and seeing the specialist Lucille has been allowed to play again, which is fantastic. We have regular fill ins from the 15 div 1 team in Millie Vears, Tia Langston and Isabelle Sheehan who have all stepped up and made a strong contribution in the teams success and helped us out whenever weve needed. The results of the season so far have been quite varied. The team went down in the first game after leading up to time. This was follow by 2 significant wins, before regrading. The whole draw then changed and we then had another 4 different teams to play. Weve since had a 1 goal win, a 70 goal win and a 2 goal loss, which leaves us sitting top of the ladder on percentage. It is great to see the improvement on court in all aspects of the game decision making, leading, defending and backing yourself to go for a ball. Trainings, while not always in full attendance are always interesting and there is nothing more satisfying as a coach to see what has been practiced during the week being put out on court in a game. While our draw will likely see us in finals, we still need to put the work in to improve our game and team work and challenge ourselves to step up to the next level if we want to achieve the grand final win. Felicity Duffield

2013 15 Div 1 Report

The 15 Div 1s are sitting at 2nd on the ladder at the end of round 9 having won 8 games, only dropping the match to top of the ladder Lobethal. We are represented by Millie Vears & Tia Langston (CoCaptains), Lauryn Bradley, Izzy Sheehan, Renee Ward, Briella Duffield, Sienna Buchecker, Bec Rice & Gabe Nielsen. We had a rough start to the season losing Lauryn for the first couple of months (recovered well & now back on court) only days before the first match. We were then hit by the season ending injury to Sienna. At the time of writing this Sienna was undergoing her reconstruction & we wish her all the best for a return to the court as soon as the Doctors & Physios agree in a year or so. While injuries always cause disruption, we have also had the chance & fortune to give Briella (now a member of our team), Rosie Hayhurst, Chloe Schaefer, Ellie-Rose Merriman, Felicity Bevan-Giles & Grace Crowder a run in our team & it has not only been a great learning experience for them, they have all played really well & fitted into the team with ease. How fortunate a Coach can be to have that support in the junior ranks. Well done girls!!! The 15 Div 1s have been putting together some strong, solid passages of play & have been working very hard on their defensive actions as well as timing in attack. Our challenge now will be to believe & trust in our game when we come up against Lobethal & Onkas again while not taking any of the other teams lightly. Trainings have been impressive (most of the time!!) & the players are learning leadership by taking parts of each nights sessions, talking their teammates through the warm-ups/ drills they have come up with. Thankyou to Annette Bradley for organising a roster for all the parents to assist us & of course, all the parents for supporting that as well as their support of the team each Saturday. A huge thanks also to our umpires, so willing to help out our Club. Good eyes girls (some of my parents will understand that ending!!! given me some good laughs, thanks guys!!!). Carolyn Downing

2013 15 Div 3 Report
This year our 15 div 3 team consists of Rosie Hayhurst (C), Georgia Buchecker (VC), Isabel Berzins, Hannah Greatz, Claire Pitchford, Annabel Reuther, Chloe Scheafer and Emily Tickner. So far, our season has consisted of a no loss streak with scores varying far and wide. Our first match against Gumeracha was a rush of adrenaline for coach Ashleigh Broadbent and vice coach Rhianna Peacock, coming out with a one goal win. I think the words uttered by first time coach, Ashleigh were something along the lines of "never do that to me again. Now go warm down." Our second match against Mount Barker United was an easy defeat, winning 55 - 7. Only proving my point before hand, a wildly inconsistent season. But coach is happy as long as its a win. As the season continues to progress, as do the girls. They have been patient and willing with Ashleigh, being put in and out of "their positions". When I say patient I mean they do as they are told, with minimal arguing. Except for Ms Scheafer, "No, Ash, dont put me in centre...dont do it" for such a small player such a large attitude prevails. One of the most patient and accepting perhaps; Hannah Greatz started the season as a WA and now consistently plays GK alongside GD Georgia Buchecker, a very dynamic duo resulting in many turn overs and goals for their team. Goergia and Hannah provide height and effective rebounds and intercepts with every opposition in every match. WD/WA Isabel Burzins improves with every game she plays, the quiet achiever of the team can almost be forgotten in her silence, until she does something completely awesome on the court, then dawdles off at quarter time with an expression on her face that just says "yeah, okay. What's next?" As quarter time is now the topic, I should mention that our break rituals consist of A) not listening to the coach. B) Having a quarterly bitch sesh' while the coach tries to talk or C) listening to the coach, sitting down and doing some meditating and visualizing ourselves kicking some bum the next quarter. Of course you can't win without scoring goals, and the girls responsible for that are Emily Tickner, Chloe Scheafer and Annie Reuther. These girls work well with each other, obviously not all at once of course, but with the height of Annie and Emily and the speed and agility of Chloe; whoever the opposition defenders are, they find themselves struggling for a contest. Claire Pitchford provides a strong defensive mid court component and a strong drive in attack as WD or WA. Our centre position is filled by the captain Rosie Hayhurst who provides drive down the court and has a go at every chance she gets. Rosie is the loudest voice on the court, always encouraging her team mates and offering constructive criticism at breaks. Ash Broadbent

2013 13 Div 1 Report

The anticipation of the girls was present before they set out on the courts for their first game, but the nerves of what the year was going to hold for them was able to been seen through their smiles and laughter. They started off in blazing fashion with a convincing win over Gumeracha. The next game was much the same with a 10 goal win over HCCS. But that was where the adrenalin of the season seemed to take a step backwards, with the girls having to face teams in next two rounds that were much more established as a group, who made the girls have to think more about working as a team than as individuals. So two out of four was a pretty good start to the season and with these two wins under our belts we had secured ourselves a spot in div 1.With the chopping and changes of divs with teams either being brought up or moved down, the order of the teams on the ladder changed dramatically and we saw ourselves facing the bottom of the ladder. (Continued next page)

Team Reports

But this only made the girls more determined and this showed with a 26 goal win over Hahndorf in the following round. But as the team was finally starting to get their groove together we had an unfortunate set back with one of the girls injuring themselves at school. This then meant our team was down to seven. The remaining seven soldiered on with ups and downs that bring us to where we are now. We have climbed the ladder to be just out the top four but there is still a high possibility that we can make it to finals. I do believe the girls have it in them as they have began to mould together and work more as a team than individual players and by doing this they have seen the results of their hard work. The season is now into its tenth round with a further four games to go after that. The weather, well thats has been interesting contributor to our Friday night games. Weve had our fair share of shocking weather conditions. But this is expected when you take part in an outdoor winter sport, and though it may be deterring for some these girls and though they may not be as happy about it, they it still step out on the courts and give the games their all. But apart from taking part in this team, some of my girls have been regularly called up to fill in for other teams and a couple are even full time players in other teams. So Id just like commend these girls for taking that step to help the club out. But all my girls deserve a round of applause for turning up every Friday night and giving each game their all. I cant wait to see what the rest of the season has installed for us. Emily Bradley

2013 13 Div 3 Report

The Echunga under 13's div 3 have had a strong year so far with seven wins and two losses. The team has worked with impressive skill, proven in their team work and steady rise on the division ladder. The defence has been working well through the year with Anais Falzon's shadowing and intercept skills and Maddie Broadbent's interception talent and hard work in the defensive third. Madelyn Jones has been working hard on her player, putting in 100% effort into every game. The mid court has been moving quickly with Tilly King running a tough centre court and Poppy Kentish creating options and space through the corridors. Versatile Talia Smith has been working well at both ends of the court using her tight game to shut down the attack and strong leads to keep possession of the ball. Shooters, Annika Tobin and Grace Crowder have been putting up the shots in the goal circle, moving the ball around the ring and making accurate passes. Riley Schaefer, who is currently our reserve, has been playing fantastically, opening up the court and playing at an under 13s level. We're very appreciative of Riley's help and we thank her for her efforts and skills. We're very proud of the girls efforts so far this season and we hope that they'll keep up the good work. The girls are always putting in 110%, listening to advice and trying to incorporate techniques we practice at training into the game. The team is grateful to all the support, advice and help from the parents and committee members who have been involved this season. It is greatly appreciated and needed.Thankyou. Sienna (coach) and Sam (assistant coach) Buchecker.

2013 11 Div 2 Report
We (Alana Girke and Kelly Chadbourne) have been delighted to coach the Under 11 div 2s this season, the team consists of Jenny Gray, Georgie Reuther, Alanah Taylor, Georgina Kelman, Riley Schaefer, Eloise Penno, Eva Falzon, Breah Marston and Holly Wyatt. This season we have both won and lost, and currently sit 4th on the competition ladder. With Georgie, Alanah, and Jenny in the attack end and hardly missing a goal, Georgina, Holly and Riley always working hard to bring the ball down the court, and Eva, Breah and Eloise building a wall in the defensive end. The girls always work well together on Saturdays and come together as a team nicely. The girls are always on time for games, and make the effort to come to training every week despite the weather. We hope that we will make the finals at the end of season and have a successful year, keep it up girls. Alana Girke & Kelly Chadbourne

2013 - 9 & UNDER Report

We have a great team this year who are learning heaps, really keen, and having lots of fun both at training and on game days. We are in Div 1 this year and have had a great season, having won about half of our games so far and the girls working towards learning all of the positions. Georgia-Mae Taylor, Sophie Vears, Imogen Ryan, Georgia Crowder, Millie Koster, Lilly Filsell, Javre Brooks and Lucinda Moran who are in their second year, have been joined by Charlotte Phillips and Chelsea ONeill. Our new players have fit into the team well. A team of 10 is challenging to place on court often with a number of positions being played by a single player each game in order to let everyone have a fair go, but at the same time, with sickness and holidays throughout the season is also a blessing!!! It has been great having the new shed for those wet training nights and we appreciate all the effort and years of planning it has taken. I would like to thank the team parents for their support both with assistance at training, and for turning up on time on Saturdays when it might be 2 degrees and/or raining. I would also like to thank Holli Kemp for assisting me this year, who although is not playing netball herself still wanted to come and help out at the club. Emma Crowder

Mid Hills Rep & Mt Lofty Academy
Fantastic to see all the Echunga players at Rep & Academy trials at the end of the 2012 season. Trialling is a huge learning experience especially in the younger age groups when you have 60-80 players vying for the 20 places in the teams. Congratulations to the following Echunga players that have represented Mid Hills so well this carnival season & to our Coaches Wendy Paech (15 Div 1) & Carolyn Downing (17s): 13s - Jess Bell & Grace Crowder (Div 1) & Georgia Buchecker (Div 2) 15s - Sienna Buchecker & Millie Vears (Div 1) 17s - Ashleigh Broadbent & Bridget Sheehan Echunga is also one of the biggest trialling Clubs in the Mt Lofty Academy programme. 20 players in each age group are chosen from the Region (Mid Hills & Hills) & attend sessions held roughly once a month along with a Camp before selections for the Academy teams are made at a Carnival in Murray Bridge. Congratulations to all of our players who were chosen in the initial squads of 20. 13s - Grace Crowder, Briella Duffield & Kaitlin Roberts 17s - Bridget Sheehan, Millie Vears & Sienna Buchecker The Academy teams of 10 players then compete at a Carnival at Elizabeth before attending the Regional Championships at Netball SA Stadium. These were held on the 10th & 11th July. Congratulations to Grace, Briella & Kaitliin on being chosen in the 13s team & for your performances over the 2 days. Well done girls!!! Bridget & Millie were both members of the 17s team which made it all the way to the Grand Final only to fall by 1 goal at the final whistle. Its been over a decade since Mt Lofty played in the Grand Final & you both played some great netball over the 2 days. Yes, you are disappointed but you can both be proud of your games. Trials for both Rep & Academy will be held after the season is over. Keep an eye out for information or just ask in you have any questions. Already heard that 2 of our 9s cant wait for trials & their chance to play Mid Hills!!!

SAPSASA Netball
The SAPSASA Netball competition is open to all school students in years 6 and 7. Around 80 girls trialled from all around the district for selection in the 2 teams to represent the Barker Region. The teams were placed in Division 3 and Division 7 for the SAPSASA State Carnival. Although school based the Echunga Netball Club was once again well represented. Div 3 Grace Crowder (year 6) and Briella Duffield (year 6) Div 7 Felicity Bevan-Giles (year 7) and Kaitlin Roberts (year 6) The girls participated in a 5 day Carnival from the 20th 24th May at Netball SA Stadium (formerly ETSA Park) where they played against other SAPSASA Regional Teams from across South Australia. The Div 3 team finished 8th in their competition whilst the Div 7 team finished 6th a commendable effort given the girls only had 2 training sessions as a team prior to the event. It was a wonderful opportunity for the girls to meet new people, create friendships and play in a team with girls that they would normally play against. (Not to mention 5 days off school to play the game they love).

Net-Set-Go 2013
This year the Net-Set-Go program brought nine enthusiastic, young netballers to the Echunga netball courts every Monday afternoon for 8 weeks. There was quite a mixed age range this year so the girls had to learn how to adapt to the different skill levels of their team members. With my focus for this year on footwork, passing and defenders, the girls had lots of fun swapping through the roles of attacker, passer and defender and by the end of it everyone wanted to be the defender because they were allowed to beat the attacker to the ball. The girls all had lots of fun and I believe theyve become better friends with each other as well as improving their netball skills. Thanks goes to Carolyn for organising and presenting the Barbie packs which were a big hit with the girls. Thanks also goes out to Jo for all her support on the managerial side of things and Ashleigh for filling in as coach when I was away. I loved spending time with these girls and I hope to see them either on the court for Echunga or back at net-set-go next year.
