Key Themes of the IBC2013 Conference

Bill Scott Chief Operating & Commercial Officer

Easel TV

Creating a more engaging entertainment experience All of a sudden there are a proliferation of approaches to capturing the attention and the spending power of the viewer. This theme will look at the craft skills and latest theory behind the audience experience and ask what kinds of content are really taking advantage of the latest technological innovations to engage viewers and maximise added value?

Robert Ambrose Media & Entertainment Industry Director

EMEA at Oracle

Understanding the power of Big Data The ability to analyse massive volumes of unstructured or semi-structured data about customer behaviour, preferences and application performance makes Big Data a perfect match for the broadcast and media industry. Or does it?

From broadcast to multicast: collision, casualties and challenges The global impact of the internet on all aspects of traditional television has been immense and with the pace of change continuing to accelerate, convergence has become collision. Conference sessions based on this theme will explore these conflicts on all scales and how these affect the future of traditional broadcasting.

Cassidy Media Partnership

Converging Industries: Telcos flirting with Broadcasters An increasing number of telcos are spending huge amounts of money buying content for delivery over 4G and LTE as their customers demand access to all content at all times. This is a significant strategic shift. Meanwhile other new entrants to the digital market are following the pure IP route and shunning traditional broadcast altogether.

John Dillon VP Marketing

Rightster

Running Your Business: technologies, systems, standards and skills Throughout this theme will be a series of sessions designed to give you valuable insight into the latest advances in industry collaboration and standards from a variety of perspectives, including business and content production.

Martyn Suker Head of Production Innovation, ITV Studios

ITV plc

The new language of digital spaces The production, broadcast, distribution and monetisation of content in digital spaces has changed the television landscape. Event television now has to be surrounded by Twitter feeds, Facebook pages and dedicated apps, adding stress not only to the budgetary process but the creative one as well.

Andrew Jordan SVP International Operations & Technology

NBC Universal

Production Innovation in techniques New technologies have changed post production workflows significantly in the past. Throughout a series of sessions, different aspects of the production process will be examined and dissected by experts, with the latest technologies and techniques investigated and assessed. Will we next see a gentle evolution of workflows for production or is it ripe for revolution?

Services

This exciting theme brings the whole process together, from multiplatform commissioning, through technological innovation in creating content across platforms and advertising on new devices, to the economics of multiplatform. We will also examine the future of the set-top box in an on-demand world, especially when measured against the rise of the role of the cloud in the connected home. Its a timely debate thats just right for IBC, as there are multiple complex issues seemingly in almost constant motion. We will examine them from all sides, and attempt to come to a sensible conclusion regarding whether it is truly an either or scenario or whether there is room for both in the rapidly evolving connected home.

Richard Welsh Head of Operations, Digital Cinema,

Technicolor Creative

This is a really interesting time to be looking at some of the advances and innovations in post-production and content capture and IBC is the perfect platform to do it. Three years on from the proliferation of feature films using 2D-to-3D conversion, we will look at whether it has finally come of age and can measure up to the standards set by native 3D productions. We will also look closely at best practice in colour management, examining workflow solutions including ACES and seek to provide an understanding of colour control at all stages of production.

The entrance of an increasing number of telcos into the broadcast market looks set to be a major disruptor and is an important facet of the whole subject of convergence. One session in particular will look at whether Telcos are the transformers of the future of TV. It will explore their changing role as content rights change, as 4G establishes itself in the marketplace and as mobile video usage expands and audiences move online. Delegates will gain a broader understanding of the different approaches and options available around the world and will educate them on the far-reaching implications of it all.

Production is changing, something that IBC recognises with this theme and series of sessions curated to give you insight into the very latest workflows. IBC will examine the role of Preditors, DITs and Data Wranglers - job titles that didnt even exist before the widespread adoption of file-based workflows. Now, they are not only an integral part of the new workflows, but also hold out the promise of restructuring production entirely in the face of new demands. Will we need a Social Network Producer or perhaps a Second Screen Director in the gallery for future projects? These sessions will provide the clues.

How the big, established public service broadcasters adapt to the modern connected world is a pressing issue that IBC is tackling head on with a keynote session to open the conference. There is much more to add to the diary though, including a session on the battle between the national broadcasters and global platforms. We are very excited to explore how the fight is shaping up between national broadcasters (deep and local) versus big hitters like YouTube (thin and global) and understand what broadcasters are doing to defend their turf and to increase their relevance to their audience. These will be must-attend sessions for broadcasters looking at their route to market and the threat from new content aggregators.

Fran Cassidy CEO

Applying the power of Big Data to the electronic media and entertainment industry and establishing its commercial significance is key for one of the hottest topics of 2013. We will have plenty on the subject and will be investigating it from all angles, with some compelling examples that demonstrate how it is currently being used by content owners and broadcasters alike. Big Data has already been key in other industries for some time and as connectivity expands it is likely to be a crucial tool in measuring how the viewer relationship with content and devices of all sizes are evolving.

The themes threaded through the IBC Conference reflect the industrys hottest topics and shape the conference programme, charting innovation and progress of both technology platforms and supporting business models. Co-ordinated and produced by some of the leading figures in the industry, the IBC Conference provides the perfect platform for calibrating the state of electronic media and entertainment and guiding its future.

Everyone realises that increasing viewer engagement is a good thing, but there is also recognition that the approach needs to be more strategic and measurable. IBCs focus on this whole subject is very well-timed, especially given the pressure on broadcasters to find new revenue streams and the fact that leveraging social media remains such a focus for content producers. For instance, we will provide real world examples of tools and strategies that engage the viewer far more directly than supplying simply a Facebook fan page or Twitter hashtag.

Awarding Excellence
The IBC Awards honour the people and organisations that have made the greatest contribution to the electronic media and entertainment industry over the previous year.
One of the centrepieces of IBC, the IBC Awards Ceremony is a hugely popular and entertaining event that recognises achievement and rewards innovation throughout the global industry. Featuring stand-out content from the previous year and often with a surprise or two up its sleeve, the free ceremony covers the following Awards. International Honour for Excellence This is the highest honour that can be bestowed by IBC and is given to the individual or organisation that has done most to change the broadcast landscape in the previous year. The 2012 Award was given to NHKs Science & Technology Research Laboratories (STRL) for its decades-long history of pioneering innovation. IBC Innovation Awards Covering three separate categories of Content Creation, Content Management, and Content Delivery, the IBC Innovation Awards celebrate the collaboration that exists between vendors on the one side and broadcasters or production companies on the other. It is unique in recognising that to really push the boundaries, both sides of the relationship need to be focussing on innovation and has become a byword for creativity and problem solving in the industry. A fourth award, the Judges Prize, is presented by the judging panel to a project that has gone even further in harnessing technological innovation to viewer benefits. Special Award When a person or an organisation contributes something to the wider industry that is a true game-changer; something unique in both its reach and its implications for what comes after it, these high-profile productions, companies and innovations are honoured with the IBC Special Award. Best Conference Paper Award The Technical Papers lie at the heart of the IBC Conference. Rigorously peer-reviewed, each one submitted is assessed by committee, with the very best selected to receive this award for the twin attributes of clarity and innovation. Exhibition Stand Design Awards This award recognises not only the efforts that exhibitors put in to their stands in terms of design and comprehension, but also the importance of coherent stand design in the overall context of a show with 1,400+ key suppliers and over 50,000 attendees.
