CATHODIC PROTECTION

THE NEGATIVE IONS FLOW THROUGH SEA WATER FROM CATHDDIC AREA TD ANODIC AREA WHERE THEY FORM HYDROXIDE FeWi2. THIS FERROUS HYDROXIDE IS FURTHER OXIDISED BY DISSOLVED OXYGEN TO FORM FERRIC HYDROXIDE Fe]H>3 WHICH IS RUST. THE ANODIC AREA IS GRADUALLY CORRODED BY RUST. NO CORROSION TAKES PLACE IN CATHDDIC AREA. THE NATURAL CORROSION ACTION WILL NOT TAKE PLACE IF THE COMPLETE HULL IS MADE CATHODIC. THIS IS ACHIEVED BY FITTING INSULATED LEAD OR OR PLATINISED TITANIUM ANODES TO THE HULL AND APPLYING A POSITIVE DC POTENTIAL TO THEM WITH RESPECT TD THE HULL. THE VALUE OF THE CURRENT IS SUITABLY ADJUSTED TD JUST PREVENT CORROSION.
Reference Anodes
1. Reference anodes may be zinc or silver attached but insulated from the hull. 2. The voltage measured between reference anodes and a fully protected anodes will be for a. Zinc electrode 250mV negative to hull b. Silver electrode - 800 mV positive to hull. 3. The control equipment automatically monitors the reference voltages and decides the size of current required by the protective anodes. 4. Reference anode differs in construction from the main anodes.

Earth-bonding
1. Degree of cathodic protection must be same as for hull, rudder, propellor and stabiliser fins. 2. To ensure the above, all must be bonded together with earth. 3. The rudder stock may be bonded by a flexible wire braid to the deck. 4. Carbon brushes rubbing on the rotating main propulsion shaft can effectively bond the shaft to the hull.
Maintenance
1. Measurements of reference voltage and protective current must be regularly logged with the ship operating conditions e.g. location, draught, water temp etc. as all these conditions affect the anode currents. 2. When drydocked, ensure that the main anodes and reference electrodes are covered with paper tape to prevent paint contamination. 3. Periodic earth bonding of propulsion shaft to check the condition of brushes is necessary
