Breaking Ground Team Building Session

The Global Gathering Place, July 20th, 2013 10:00am 4:30pm 10:00am-10:15am Introduction 1. Establish the purpose of the program, my role and their role Talk about program structure and schedule Their role: They will commit 5 hours throughout the week to achieving their short term goals, journaling and attending the sharing session My role: I will commit to supporting them in their journey, providing one-to-one guidance, referring them to resources and planning informative workshops 2. Establish objectives of the day Get to know each other Self discovery Learning Styles, Skills, Strengths, Dreams Learn about setting short term and long term goals Make action plans (if we dont get through everything, we will cover it in the weekly meetings) 3. Establish a safe and respectful environment (can do this after the icebreaker) Make agreements and write them on a poster: What do participants need from each other, what do they need from the facilitator, what facilitator needs from the group (eg honesty, respect, openness, support, participation) 10:15 11:00 Icebreaker and Brainstorming

Getting to know each other Pair up with the person next to them. Ask them their name, the story of how they got their name, and a few interesting things about them, including, how they came to be in the program. Introduce that person to the rest of the group. Brainstorming I will divide them into two (or three) groups and have them answer the following questions on a poster. What do you want to learn? What do you want to get out of this program? After they nish their posters have them share with the other group. Hand out journals/binders and talk about the journaling process and we will be using the journals throughout the day. (Could also do a rst entry answering the previous questions) 11:00am-11:30pm Identify personal learning styles Learning Style PowerPoint - Talk about the learning styles, why it is important to identify Play the learning style game to identify features of certain styles (in two groups, make it a competition) - Prizes Use computer lab to do the online learning styles test, print results and discuss Participants will think about ways (and write them down in their journals) that they can incorporate their learning style in the process of achieving their goals 11:30am-12pm Guest Speaker Victor Daas Topic: Fearlessness, Love Leadership, Perspectives on Goal setting 12-12:30pm Lunch 12:30pm-1:30pm Exploration of Skills, Strengths, Dreams

OPTIONS: The Colors Assessment -Option for group activity - do the assessment and then divide into color groups for brainstorming common strengths based on pictures on the posters Visualization activity Dream my future. Have everyone close their eyes and follow instructions of facilitator leading through a day, 5/10 years from now The passion test exploring what your ideal life looks life 1:30pm-2:00pm Goal Setting Powerpoint presentation Learn about SMART goals, short term, long term Individual brainstorming to set goals Identify obstacles- what is preventing you from getting to where you want to go.

2:10pm 2:30pm Break and Energizer 2:30pm 3:00pm Action Planning Action Planning If I am to do . Then I must. Talk about breaking down the goals into manageable steps and creating an action plan Design a road map/vision board starting point and nish line with action steps along the way. Draw the long term objective on top and then draw out stepping stones to get there, working backwards. Use magazine pictures and words that are related to the goals to decorate Establish goal buddies, accountability partners

3:45pm 4:00pm Team building activity - outside Standing in a circle pass a ball of string to someone in the circle after saying one thing to encourage them, (eg, what you have noticed about that person that is positive a strength or character trait) Talk about the analogy of planting a garden, story of how my garden began. Each person will choose a seedling and well plant them in the pots that have been prepared outside. When they come to the Thursday meetings they can watch the seedlings grow/bloom, pick weeds, water them, as a reminder to nurture dreams and goals to watch them develop, also the process of removing obstacles to promote growth.
