BASES FOR JUDGMENT

What could a person who responds to suffering this way deal with the bases for judgment? What will be his/her primary basis for judging? Explain your answer.

PHILOSOPHY OF KNOWLEDGE
Based on your answer in the previous columns, what philosophy of knowledge do you think this person adheres to? Explain your answer.

HOPELESSNESS

According to one site, responding to suffering by way of hopelessness will cause suicide. http://www.suicide.org/ hopelessness-a-dangerous-warningsign.html

The simple danger is suicide, or giving up. Losing hope. The person tries to nd this hope not realizing it in himself, he quits life. This pessimism would also make them more aware and careful thinking twice about anything from plane to bus rides.

He would look at everything as pointless and the end of the world. He would make no beliefs and believe in nothing and that it came from nothing, and will amount to nothing. He loses all hope or most of it.

Relativist. An extreme form where he believes in nothing. He simply has no beliefs and no longer cares in the idea. Because 9/11 drained all his principles out of him.

INDIVIDUALISM

People would result to battling the government and become singular individuals, relativists in the sense following whatever that want to do. http:// en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ The_Politics_of_Individualism:_Liberalis m,_Liberal_Feminism,_and_Anarchism

This causes a lot of havoc and questioning, destroying order and pointing ngers at the authorities for their inanity. This also allows people to have a voice and gives a sense of freedom and change in the way the government runs.
This causes corruption and politicians and other people in power to save face. In the process though it still makes a difference to other peoples' lives one positive way or another.

He would have his own world and would want his own say. He would make his own beliefs, and if his religion antagonizes it, he would go against his own beliefs to mold his own standard of what is good.

Relativist. This is how people enjoy questioning authority because they simply want things to go their way. If this does not happen they simply quarrel.

ENLIGHTENED SELF-INTEREST

Enlightened self-interest shows how people serve others to ultimately serve themselves. http://xroads.virginia.edu/ ~HYPER/DETOC/ch2_08.htm , http:// www.policymic.com/articles/7836/ president-bush-politicized-9-11-longbefore-obama-used-bin-laden-s-death
Some people tend to show support for the victims of the disaster, and lend their appreciation for the heroes that died on that faithful day. http://www.kpbs.org/ news/2013/apr/12/national-ag-projectshowcases-post-911-compassio/

The man would simply do things in front of the public, but this will not motivate him in public. He will be a downright liar, and eventually people will nd out his true colors. Until he could really do anything good on his own, his image will be at the very least somewhat tattered.

Absolutist. They simply want everybody to love them and enjoy saving face. They do not know any better and believe the public knows the right thing, and pleasing them puts them in a better direction.

COMPASSION

This would allow the victims to be helped and allows the society to keep a sense of unity. Compassion means to "suffer with." In doing so, for the case of 9/11, it could make us grow bitter hatred to the Muslims for the event, just how it angered all Americans.

He will reach out, feel empathy or usually sympathy for those in need. He will make his decisions a lot based on his emotions and most of the time he will be able to do the right thing.

Evaluativist. This is wherein people simply choose to do what they feel is right based on the situation not caring the limitations or how lazy they might feel at that moment. This is the closest thing to the perfect philosophy.
