Overview of Intelligent Selective Paging

Overview of Intelligent Selective Paging

Intelligent Selective Paging BSS21324 decreases signalling load generated by paging messages considerably in Air and Abis interfaces by sending the paging message only to the last known cell and its adjacent cells. In basic paging procedure, the MS is paged either only the cells identified in paging message, or all the cells in BSC's control. In this basic solution, every cell in the location area is paged, even if the MS is located in one cell only. The more the traffic, the more pages are generated for each cell. When Intelligent Selective Paging is activated and MS is paged, MSC identifies the last known cell of the MS in the paging message and sends the BSC a paging message containing the LAC + CI of the cell. Message is sent only to the BSC in which the cell is configured. When BSC receives the message, it conducts paging in the cell identified in the paging message and its adjacent cells. If there is no response from the MS, the MSC re-pages the MS with paging message containing only LAC; if there are more than one BSC belonging to the same LA, the message is usually sent to all of them. The MSC may have settings which affect to this. When BSC receives the paging message containing LAC identification only, the paging is done in all the cells belonging to the identified LAC. If more than one cell is identified in the paging message, the paging is conducted only in the identified cells. Activating this feature requires a valid license. Effect on interfaces. Signalling load in Air and Abis interfaces is decreased. In A interface, signalling load may increase slightly due to increased number of re-pagings.

Activating and testing Intelligent Selective Paging

Activating and testing Intelligent Selective Paging

Purpose This procedure describes how to activate and test Intelligent Selective Paging feature. Intelligent Selective Paging is a licence-based application software product. The type of the licence is on/off.

Before you start

Tip
Activate the feature first in the BSCs and then in the MSC to avoid service disruption in the network.

To test the activation of Intelligent Selective Paging, make sure that the following network elements and mobile stations are available:
.

1 MSC with activated Intelligent Selective Paging 1 BSC with S12 ED 4.1 or newer software 4 BTSs on one LAC and two different bands, each having at least one TRX

Steps
1. 2. Check that the licence is installed and activated (W7M). Set the state of the Intelligent Selective Paging to ON. ZW7M:FWA=1301:ON;

3.

Test the feature. Use the GSM network message analyzer to check paging from Abis interfaces. a. Create adjacencies. BTS1, BTS2 and BTS3 are adjacent, while BTS4 has no adjacencies. b. Turn the MS on and connect it to BTS1. Remove the battery from the MS. c. Make MT CS call. CS call is unsuccessful. Paging is done at first with LAC + CI, BTS1, BTS2 and BTS3 are paged. Then the whole LAC, BTS1, BTS2. BTS3 and BTS4, is re-paged. d. Re-insert the battery and turn the MS on. Connect the MS to BTS4 and remove the battery from the MS. e. Make MT CS call. CS call is unsuccessful. Paging is done at first with LAC + CI, BTS4 is paged. Then the whole LAC, BTS1, BTS2. BTS3 and BTS4, is re-paged.

Deactivating and testing Intelligent Selective Paging

Deactivating and testing Intelligent Selective Paging

Purpose This procedure describes how to deactivate the Intelligent Selective Paging feature. Before you start

Tip
Deactivate the feature first in the MSC, then in the BSCs.

Steps
1. Set the state of the Intelligent Selective Paging to OFF. ZW7M:FWA=1301:OFF; 2. Test the deactivation. Use the GSM network message analyzer to check paging from Abis interfaces. a. Turn the MS on. Connect the MS to BTS1 and remove the battery from the MS. b. Make an MT CS call. The CS call is unsuccessful. Paging is done at first with LAC + CI, BTS1 is paged. Then the whole LAC, BTS1, BTS2, BTS3, and BTS4 are re-paged.
