ROMAN MACHINES
13 July to 6 October This awesome exhibition at Te Manawa is perfect for kids of all ages. The July school holidays will be filled with activities like mosaic making, building a Roman arch, catapults and a bridge. These activities will fill up fast so make sure you book early! Children can also take part in the free events at Te Manawa such as playing Roman knucklebones and creating your own shield. The Roman Machines exhibition itself showcases the inventions and creations of the Ancient Romans that influence our lives today. Did you know that Romans invented concrete, odometers, the book (instead of using a scroll), the aquaduct and much more. Like many of us today, Romans lived in large apartment buildings and ate takeaway food. They loved shopping malls, and even had underfloor heating! Come along and see Roman Machines come to life! Roman flour contained a lot of dust and bits. This made bread so coarse that it wore down peoples teeth! Ouch!

WEIRD FACT

The Romans used cranes to lift heavy stones on building sites. Cranes were powered by men turning a treadmill or hauling on ropes - phew!

FUN FACT

Some Romans liked to eat snails fattened on milk, peacocks brains and flamingos tongues. Yuck!
