WE live in an age where the things you can do with your smartphones are only limited by the ingenuity and imagination of those designing the apps. But we are not quite at a paperless utopia. Much of our day-to-day business still requires the good old-fashioned hard copy, with agreements that require you to ink the dotted line and letters which need to be sent to your door. So while some may be quick to juxtapose the speed of the Internet against the anachronistic pace of snail mail, it is not on a slow march to oblivion. Let us not forget the 39% of the population who lack Internet access in the country. Or that local post offices are effectively the nerve centres of their neighbourhoods or small towns. For all of us, in one way or another, postal services remain an irreplaceable service that we are entitled to at uniform price and quality and regardless of geography. So there are two things we will always need to know. That post offices will always be there. And that postal workers are people we can depend on. Last Sunday, when residents of Ukay Heights found that thousands of their letters had been dumped into a ravine instead of being slotted into their mail bins, their faith in that institution fell off a cliff. The postmen had apparently been at it for about a year and Pos Malaysia was quick to announce their pending dismissal. But was the act of the culprits tantamount to criminal destruction of property?
