Home sales continue strong growth in June

The number of homes sold in the area covered by the Firelands Association of Realtors (FAR) showed strong growth across the board in June. The local market posted gains in activity in both price per sale and number of units sold according to statistics provided by the Ohio Association of Realtors. Over the past two years, the Ohio housing market, month-by-month, has made slow, steady and consistent progress in its effort to recover from the economic challenges wrought by the recession, said OAR President Thomas J. Williams. Attaining 24 consecutive months of gains in sales activity our longest stretch in uninterrupted growth ins 16 years of tracking Ohio home sales is a clear indicator of growing consumer confidence and a renewed appreciation that housing is a solid, long term investment. In June, the local housing market showed a 15.9% increase in the number of units sold compared to June of 2012. Most encouraging was the over 26% increase in the total dollar volume, thanks in large measure to a significant increase in the average sale price to over $130,000 compared to just over $119,000 last year. For the year, the total of units sold since January is up over 13% while the total dollar volume in home sales is up nearly 18% compared to the same time frame last year. The average sale price is up nearly $5,000 per unit sold for the year compared to January through June of 2012.

Why are you living with hip pain?

7/17/07 9:32:38 AM

Its time to get out and enjoy life.

Living with the pain can disrupt your entire life, but a new hip replacement surgery, Anterior Minimally Invasive Surgery (AMIS), leaves patients with less pain after surgery, shorter recovery times and reduced risk of limping. Gary Kresge, D.O., Magruder Orthopedic Surgeon, is one of the few physicians in the area educated to perform this new procedure.

A great event cannot happen without great community support, and we would like to thank all of our sponsors, volunteers, parents, and students who made the event happen, as well as the City of Port Clinton. We would also like to thank all the racers who came out, and we hope that we will see you all next year at the 2nd Annual! Thanks, Gabe DeFrietas, President PCHS Class of 2015

The Port Clinton High School Class of 2015 held the 1st Annual Star Spangled Squirt Gun Run/Walk 5K this Fourth of July. With over 200 racers participating on a beautiful Independence Day morning, the squirt guns helped us stay cool while we celebrated our nations birth. The event was a success, raising over $5000 to keep school activities affordable for all students.

Thank you from the Miller family

Last week, our family suffered a tremendous loss in the death of Tom. Through this tragedy, we observed several acts of heroism by a multitude of people. To the Port Clinton firefighters, EMS, police officers and good Samaritans who put aside their own personal safety in an effort to help another, we say thank you. Your actions were remarkably courageous and heroic, and allowed our family an opportunity to make peace and say goodbye to Tom. In addition, we would like to thank the doctors and nurses at Magruder Hospital and St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center for their care and support during this most difficult time. We feel overwhelmingly blessed by the outpouring of support for our family over the past week. Thank you to all of the people who sent cards, flowers, prayers, and kind words. We find comfort in knowing Tom had such a profound effect on so many lives. He will be greatly missed. Thank You! Gail Miller and Family

The Beacon AROUND OTTAWA COUNTY Ottawa County Court recognizes graduate Joyful Connections announces

pre-school coloring contest winners

Joyful Connections has announced the winners of their recent coloring contest. The contest was open to 150 preschoolers throughout the county. The coloring contest was held in recognition of Supervised Visitation Awareness Month. Prizes were awarded for the top three places. There was an amazing amount of talent presented in the entries; and after much deliberation, first place went to Mya age 4, second place was Hannah, age 4, and the third place winner was Ada, age 5. Congratulations to the winners! Each winner received a prize of outdoor toys to enjoy with their family. Joyful Connections is a supervised visitation and exchange center located in Oak Harbor and serving Ottawa and the surrounding counties. The mission is to provide a child-focused, healthy, safe, and home-like environment where children

Magistrate Louis P. Wargo III presided over a special session of the Ottawa County Municipal Court Tuesday, June 25, at 10 a.m. Wargo recognized a graduate of its Benchmark Alcohol/Drug and Mental Health Intervention Court Program, the 22nd graduate overall, after its regularly scheduled weekly session. The Court session, followed by a reception for the graduate and his supporters, honored the programs graduate for his successful completion of the approximately two (2) year court program. Judge Frederick C. Hany II, as hes stated in the past, noted that Since its inception in July 2008, the Benchmark Program has served the families and citizens of Ottawa County by addressing the Countys mental health and substance abuse issues. That this is the Courts 22nd graduate, speaks volumes, in and of itself, as to the courts long term commitment to the families and citizens of this county. Magistrate Wargo, who regularly presides over the weekly court sessions, commended the graduate, citing the fact that through his diligence and hard

work, he was one of the quickest to graduate through the Courts program. Overall the Courts graduates have seen that through perseverance, hard work, and commitment, that they have not only bettered themselves, but others as well. This graduate certainly continues the tradition of this Benchmark Program by serving as a positive role model and mentor for those participants following them in the program. The Courts Benchmark Intervention Program has been, with the assistance of the Ottawa County Prosecutors Office and other community agencies, supervising a rehabilitation program for chemically dependent individuals as well as individuals with serious mental health problems charged with misdemeanor offenses since July, 2008. Funding for the establishment and operation of the Intervention Court was initially being supplemented by a Department of Justice Grant, but has, since that date, received the full support of the Ottawa County Commissioners.

B-C-S Board prepares for coming school year

At their June 25th Regular Meeting, the Benton-CarrollSalem Board of Education took on a number of issues to prepare the district for the coming school year. The meeting opened with Board members providing a number of committee reports. Included in this discussion was the renewal of two levies. By a vote of 5-0, Board members approved a Resolution of Necessity regarding the renewal of a five-year 1.2 mill permanent improvement levy and the renewal of a five-year 3.9 mill operating levy. This is the first step toward getting these levy renewal issues on the November 5, 2013 ballot. The renewals of these two levies are critical for the district moving forward. Voters would not see any increase in their taxes if these renewals are approved, said Superintendent Guy Parmigian. The permanent improvement levy dollars are earmarked for long-term investments such as paving and flooring projects. Operating levy dollars are used for general operations of the district such as the training of staff and the payment of utility bills. Board President Heather Dewitz announced that a Levy Renewal Committee was being formed to educate the community about the two levy renewal issues that will be on the ballot. Any citizens interested in serving on this committee are invited to attend a meeting that will be held on Tuesday, August 6th at 7 p.m. at the Board of Education Office. In other business, the Board approved supplemental contracts for staff, and one-year limited contracts for a number of teachers to replace teachers who retired. The teachers include Amy Sandrock, Lauren Boss, and Kelly Traver at Oak Harbor Middle School, along with Megan McGuire and Eric Dusseau at Oak Harbor High School. The Board also approved a two-year administrative contract for John Knapp who will serve as assistant principal at R.C. Waters Elementary School. As part of his additional duties, Mr. Knapp will oversee the districts community education program. The Board also approved the transfer of Angela Lewis into the position of Library Assistant at Oak Harbor High School. Next, an expenditure of $12,000 in Race to the Top Grant funds was also approved to be paid to B-C-S teachers this summer so that they can get training and engage in planning to be better prepared to implement new state learning standards for students. The expenditure of these funds is part of the districts ongoing commitment to provide highquality training and professional development for teachers. B-C-S School Districts investment in teacher professional development regarding new learning standards will help them to be better prepared to help kids reach higher levels of achievement in the classroom. Board members also approved a number of contracts, including an agreement with Port Clinton City Schools to share the services of Food Service Director Nyla Denman between the two districts. Board members were excited about this new shared services venture, which will create ef-

ficiencies in both school districts and save the B-C-S School District approximately $25,000. B-C-S, Port Clinton and Mrs. Denman are committed to working together to ensure the success of this progressive partnership. Board members also approved contracts with Northern Ohio Educational Computer Association, North Point Educational Service Center for various educational services, and approved a purchase agreement with the Benton Township Board of Trustees for the sale of approximately 3.7 acres of vacant land (at $2,000 per acre) located directly behind Graytown School. The Benton Township Trustees must now act to approve the purchase agreement before the sale is finalized. The Board of Education is currently in talks for the sale of the Graytown School building and the Carroll School building. The Board also approved student and staff handbooks and Student Athletic Training Rules for the coming school year, in addition to student fees and student lunch prices for the 2013-2014 school year. In Treasurers Business, the Board approved Mr. Coffmans monthly financial report. The Treasurers reports are available online at the districts website: www.bcssd.com. The Board also approved temporary appropriations for Fiscal Year 2014, which begins July 1st. The next Regular Meeting of the B-C-S Board of Education is slated for July 23 at 5 p.m.at the Board of Education Office.

WSOS enrolling preschoolers now

With a new school year approaching, applications for children birth to 4 years old are now being accepted at each of the nine preschool centers operated by WSOS. The centers located in Ottawa County include Genoa and Port Clinton. Options available to parents who enroll their children at WSOS include full and half-day classes and/or home visitation services. Those children who cannot be served at a center can be served through the home-based/homevisitation program. Services are also available at some centers for babies and toddlers through the Early Head Start program. The WSOS Head Start/Early Childhood program is a comprehensive early childhood and family program. The program provides early childhood education which is complemented by nutrition/health services for the child and social services for the entire family. Families who enroll in the program benefit by having access to a variety of community resources, diverse parent education programs and other social services that can assist the family to become self-sufficient. Eligible families are those whose total annual income does not exceed 100 percent of the federal poverty guidelines for Early Head Start/Head Start and 200 percent for the Early Childhood Education Program. Children with special needs are also eligible for these services. Please call to verify the income levels. All nine early childhood centers operated by WSOS in its four-county service area have earned the highest Step Up to Quality designation Three Stars awarded by the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services (DJFS), Children Services Division. Children enrolled at these centers play, learn and develop social skills at one of the best quality preschool centers in the state because they have met all the requirements ODJFS has put in place for centers to achieve. If your family could benefit from the WSOS Head Start/ Early Childhood Development Program or you know a family that would, call WSOS at 1-800-775-9767 or visit the website at www.wsos.org.

price you will pay for health insurance age, geographic area and smoker/nonsmoker status. Although this sounds fair and simple, it will most likely lead to significantly higher pricing and especially to those individuals who are in good health and in particular younger males. In general male pricing for health insurance today is much lower than female rates, especially in the younger age brackets. A persons sex will no longer be a factor in the rates. If you need help securing a better health insurance plan and need advice through the transition, contact Steve Gulas or Chuck Devore at Bolte Insurance Agency at 419.732.3111, or visit their website for an online quote at www.bolteinsurance. com. They are independent agents who represent multiple health insurance companies.

If you are in good health, re-shop your health insurance now to lock in a low rate before Obama Care begins in January 2014. Starting then, individual health insurance will become guaranteed issue, all plans will cover maternity, many preventative benefits will be mandatory and health insurers will no longer be able to charge more based upon medical conditions. Although all of these features sound attractive, they will come with a hefty price tag. The low health insurance pricing people in good health can obtain today is going to be gone for good starting in January. You should most likely be able to delay the costly price increases of Obama Care until your plans renewal date in 2014 if you qualify for a new health insurance plan today with a favorable health rating. Starting in January there will only be three main factors used to determine the

Cruise to be awarded to Ohio Family Caregiver

Ohio residents are invited to nominate deserving family caregivers, including themselves, for the opportunity to win a free, four-night five-day cruise. Home Instead Inc., franchisor of the Home Instead Senior Care network, is sponsoring the cruise for one caregiving hero and guest. Submit your nomination and vote by Aug. 24, at http://cruise.caregiverstress.com. The Caregiver Cruise is scheduled for Feb. 3-7, 2014, on the Royal Caribbean Enchantment of the Seas. The cruise will set sail from Cape Canaveral, FL, with stops in CocoCay and Nassau, Bahamas. In addition to the cruise, the winning recipient will receive 40 hours of free care from a Home Instead Senior Care professional CAREGiverSM for his/her senior loved one while away. The stress of caregiving can have debilitating effects not only on family caregivers, but also on the older adults who are receiving that care, said President Jeff Huber of Home Instead Inc. Thats why its important for caregivers to take care of themselves. And what better way to do that than during a tropical getaway. The cruise offers a relaxing retreat with a number of optional activities such as putt-putt golf, cocktail hour, cupcake decorating and scavenger hunts, along with support groups and one-on-one consultations with family caregiving expert Dr. Amy DAprix. To take a caregiver distress assessment and learn how you can help guard against the potential dangers related to caregiver stress, go to FamilyCaregiverStressRelief.com. Terra State hosts Plus 50 Encore Career information event

Many people in the U.S. who are at least 50 years old are facing a new reality, that they will be in the workforce well beyond the traditional age of retirement. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that the percentage of adults older than 55 in the workforce will grow from 13 percent in 2000 to 25 percent by 2020. Terra State Community College is rolling out a program that will help baby boomers get the training and knowledge they need to succeed. The Plus 50 Encore Career Event at Terra State is from 5:30 to 7 p.m., Wednesday, July 31, in Building B, Room 101. Many plus-50 individuals arent sure where to begin when it comes to going back to school, said Kathy Berger, coordinator of the program. Reasons vary for seeking more education. Training might be needed for a promotion; a layoff may have forced retraining; a job may become too physical; or retirement might not be affordable. Whatever the reason, we will help pave the pathway to your new job, Berger said. We want you to know that community colleges are approachable and convenient. Terra State is an affordable option for training and skills that will lead to employment. There will be information about Terra States quick start programs in real estate, welding, medical scribe, professional home and family care and office administration. Terra staff will explain how to return to school, including the admissions process, campus resources, and financial aid. Campus tours will also be available. Andy Carroll, Dean of Engineering Technologies and Mathematics, will be on hand to explain the Welding Fast Track Certificate program that was designed to meet the demands of industry. I believe its ideal for any age of student, but especially prospective students over the age of 50 who have bills to pay and families to provide for, he said. We are very excited to begin this collaboration with theOhio Institute for Real Estate Studies, added Michael Shirtz, Dean of Business and Creative Arts. There is no charge for this event. Friends and family are welcome to attend. And, of course, you can attend even if you are younger than 50, Berger said. This is good information for everyone who wants to improve their lives through education. Terra State is one of 36 new colleges recently selected for the project. Since 2008, AACC and its network of Plus 50 initiative colleges have worked with baby boomers and helped them prepare for new careers. An independent evaluation of AACCs Plus 50 initiative found that 89 percent of students agreed that college workforce training helped them acquire new job skills, and 72 percent attributed landing a job to such training. The Plus 50 Encore Completion Program supports AACCs work to increase the number of students who finish degrees, certificates and other credentials. For more information on the event or the Plus 50 Encore Program, contact Kathy Berger at 419-559-2377 or email her at kberger01@terra.edu.

Rock & Roll returns to Fort Firelands stage

Fort Firelands RV Resort located on OH163 at 269 will be hosting Gathering at the Fort featuring the Third Degree add, We may be old but we dont know it. Third Degree Band plays the rock classics like ZZTop, Tom Petty, The Beatles and a host of other bands. They may even throw in some Taylor Swift to keep things fresh. Its been a long time since Fort Firelands has hosted a rock band, says Jeff Barton, one of Fort Firelands owners. We have heard many stories about the old days when bands like Led Zeppelin, Alice Cooper and Steppenwolf had graced the Forts stage. The acoustics in the Fort complex are great and we are looking forward to having a band. We have seen Third Degree Band perform and enjoyed their music. The public is invited to this free concert event. If you like classic rock & roll music, grab your cooler and a chair or blanket and come to the Fort. Food will be available from PortNStarboard Restaurant.

Captain Juls Fishing Report

Biting black flies can ruin a fun experience

Have you ever driven to a fishing spot out in the middle of nowhere on Lake Erie only to find that the biting black flies have found you? Its mind boggling to me that they just show up out of nowhere, miles from the nearest shore, with a very big appetite for human flesh. They are so annoying they can actually ruin the fishing experience for many people with their sting-like bite. Some are so nasty that they actually draw blood. Everyone is different, but for the most part, skin is skin, and flies are attracted to it. I do whole-heartedly believe that the cleanliness of your boat will do more to ward off the swarm than any chemical used to spray yourself down with. A boat full of fish slime will attract them faster than a boat that was scrubbed with bleach, so keeping your boat clean is a must this time of year. As a moderator on a very large fishing website, I followed a discussion about trips to Canada where the black flies seem to be bigger and more ferocious than anywhere else. There were many suggestions, but a few products were endorsed by more than a handful of people. Topping the list of safe products to use is Coppertones 50 SPF in both the cream or spray form. This is probably a great choice, since it also performs the duty of protecting your skin from dangerous UV rays at the same time. Another product is one that keeps flies off horses, Ultra Shield Green. Its the one that I use in my boat, and it seems to work while the formula is wet on your skin, but after a while it needs to be reapplied. A homemade mixture of Dawn dishwashing liquid and water in a spray bottle works too. But, like the Ultra Shield, it seems to lose effectiveness once completely dried and needs to be reapplied several times a day. If youre like me, and dont like to wear long sleeves or long pants in the heat of summer, then one of these products is bound to work for you, so dont let biting black flies keep you off the water this season. Good luck and good fishing! Captain Juls can be contacted by email at rngrgal@gmail. com, or by phone at 419-835-7347. Her website address is www.julswalleyefishingadventures.com

Over 100 boats and 150 young sailors participated in the North Coast Junior Regatta held at Port Clinton Yacht Club on Friday, June 19. The actual regatta takes place next Friday through Sunday, August 2-4. The courses will be a combination of around the islands racing as well as a day of short course racing. Carousel rides benefit charity

Take a spin on any of Cedar Points three carousels this month, and youll help raise money for pediatric research at Cleveland Clinic Childrens. During the month of July, Cedar Point will donate 10 cents for every rider on the historic Midway Carousel, the Cedar Downs Racing Derby or the Kiddy Kingdom Carousel. This fundraising initiative is part of an ongoing partnership between Cedar Point and Cleveland Clinic Childrens. In May, Cedar Point launched the campaign with a first-rider auction for GateKeeper that raised more than $30,000 for pediatric research at Cleveland Clinic Childrens. Also through July, guests can purchase raffle tickets for just $5 each for a chance to win a Chevy Cruze, courtesy of Cleveland Chevy Network and Tim Lally Chevrolet. Our ultimate goal is to return kids to fun, and Cedar Point is the ideal partner because fun is their foundation, says Giovanni Piedimonte, MD, Chairman of Cleveland Clinic Childrens. This campaign allows every single person the chance to help our patients and have fun in the process. For more information, visit www.cedarpoint.com/carouselsforkids.

Wooden boats and plein air artists enrich Lakeside

BY DONNA LUEKE Docked along the Lakeside pier and trailered onto the Hotel Lakeside lawn this weekend were gleaming wooden boats-kayaks, dinghys, runabouts, cruisers, sailboats and yachts. The 10th Annual Lakeside Wooden Boat show shared Lakesides waterfront with the 47 plein air artists who were painting and exhibiting their canvases. Wally and the Beavs played on the pavilion deck, adding the soundtrack for the festival atmosphere. The Lyman, the classic Lake Erie wooden boat, was well represented in its many variations, from a 35 Lyman Seahawk to a 13 Lyman sailboat, with nearly half of the boats displayed carrying the Lyman name. Mame Drackett, Coordinator of the Wooden Boat Show, shared that of this years record 71 boats, the oldest boat is from 1901, the youngest from 2012. The youngest exhibitor is a 9 year old girl, and the oldest exhibitor, Dr. John Kinstle, is exhibiting for the first time. Each boat had a story to tell. The Dracketts 1930 Chris Craft Triple Cockpit Tradition has a companion wooden wagon from Wooden Boat Creations. The wagon awaits the birth of the Dracketts first grandchild later this year. Colin Watsons 1956 Lyman Runabout is a project that Colin shared with his grandfather John Krohn. Krohn had the unrestored boat sitting in a barn for years. Colins hard work helped restore the boat to its former glory. White Lightning, Collin Beachys 8 racer, was the smallest boat in the show. Collin worked on the boat over the winter. The wooden boaters seem to all share a love of the beauty and grace of working with wood. The Plein Air Art Festival (en plein air means painting in the open air) featured 47 Midwestern artists this year. Artists welcomed visitors to watch as their work on Lakeside scenes evolved over a few hours or days into a finished painting. For more information on wooden boats, contact the non-profit Lakeside Wooden Boat Society at www.lakesidewoodenboatsociety.com. For more information on plein air painting, contact Marblehead plein air artist Rick Dziak at www.dziakgallery.com, 419.798.4994, or dziak@cros.net. For more photos, go to www.thebeacon. net

Marketing and PR Department at Magruder Hospital earns national recognition

Magruder Hospitals Marketing and Public Relations Department recently received national recognition earning both a Gold and Silver Aster Award. The Aster Awards, one of the largest national competitions of its kind, is hosted by Marketing Healthcare Today Magazine and Creative Images Inc. This elite program recognizes outstanding healthcare professionals for excellence in their advertising/marketing efforts. The marketing/pr departments campaign on patient satisfaction earned both a Gold and Silver Aster in the billboard and ad categories. The themes for the creative pieces were Take Away My Fear and Make Me Feel Better, acknowledging the reasons patients rank Magruder as one of the leading hospitals in the nation for patient satisfaction. We are extremely honored to have received these awards along with our graphic designers from AHA creative. This campaign was a great team effort and we are very proud of the final campaign results, said Elisabeth Brand, Magruders Director of Marketing and Public Relations. Awards were issued for entries that received top marks from a diverse panel of judges, placing award winners in the top 16% of the nation for advertising excellence. Judging criteria included creativity, layout and design, functionality, message effectiveness, production quality and overall appeal. Nearly 3,000 entries from across the United States as well as Canada and South America were considered in the 2013 entries. To date, the marketing team at Magruder has earned four national awards, including a Gold Addy from the American Advertising Federation.

Pizza Hut supports Alexs Lemonade Stand in July

In their continuing efforts to contribute to cures for all kids with cancer, 76 Pizza Hut restaurants throughout Northeast Ohio will fundraise for Alexs Lemonade Stand Foundation from July 13-31. All participating Pizza Huts will sell paper lemons throughout the second half of the month to raise funds for the battle against childhood cancer. Alexs Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF) emerged from the front yard lemonade stand of cancer patient Alexandra Alex Scott (1996-2004). In 2000, 4-year-old Alex announced that she wanted to hold a lemonade stand to raise money to help find a cure for all children with cancer. Since Alex held that first stand, the Foundation bearing her name has evolved into a national fundraising movement, complete with thousands of supporters across the country carrying on her legacy of hope. To date, Alexs Lemonade Stand Foundation, a registered 501(c)3 charity, has raised more than $60 million toward fulfilling Alexs dream of finding a cure, funding over 300 pediatric cancer research projects nationally. For more information on Alexs Lemonade Stand Foundation, visit AlexsLemonade.org.

Summer Earth Camps teach students to respect resources

The OSS Joint Solid Waste Management District sponsored three Earth Camps this June in Ottawa, Sandusky and Seneca County. The half day camps were hosted at Lakeview Park in Port Clinton, Conner Park in Fremont and Meadowbrook Park in Bascom. A total of 167 elementary students participated in the camps learning about recycling, litter prevention and natural resources. Campers were separated into three groups, Planet Protectors, Go Green Gang and Recycling Rock Stars and each group rotated through stations. Team flags were made and carried with pride to each session during the camp. Camp activities included Jenga With A Twist, where campers played a modified version of Jenga using color coded blocks representing our natural resources. Recycled Crafts allowed campers to make their own homemade crafts from household recyclables found in the recycle bin. Recycled Games let the children play traditional games such as checkers from recyclable materials. The children learned the importance of properly dis-
