Charges dismissed for women accused of running house of prostitution in town

VAN BUREN TWP. Charges have been dismissed against four women accused of operating Holistic Touch and Gifts as a front for a house of prostitution. The women will pay fines for a lesser charge unrelated to allegations of operating a house of prostitution. The defendants appeared in 34th District Court in Romulus on July 17 before Judge David Parrott. They were arrested after charges against them were authorized by the Wayne County Prosecutors Office, according to Van Buren Township police. On May 23, police arrested two of the women: Kimberly Qualls, the owner of the massage parlor at 41015 E. Huron River Drive, and Lena Worrell of Monroe. The two others, Andrea Romano of Westland and Amanda Wolford of Wyandotte, were arrested the next day. After their arrests, Qualls, Romano and Wolford were arraigned on felony charges of keeping a house of prostitution and prostitu-

tion, according to police. Worrell was arraigned on charges of keeping a house of prostitution and disorderly conduct in a house of prostitution. Seymour Schwartz, the defense attorney representing Qualls and Worrell, said all four defendants pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of disorderly person loitering in an illegal business under the building code. He specified the reason the business is considered illegal for counts of this charge is because there were some minor code violations, related to the structure of the business, the defendants were aware of and didnt address. All other charges against them have been dismissed, he said. They will have to pay fines of $500 and some other costs due to the disorderly person charges, but will then be finished, Schwartz said. These are nice girls, he said, adding that they have never been in trouble before. The defense attorney said hes not aware of any allegations made by police against the defendants, only reports made to police about what some others in the community have said.

Swartz said Van Buren Township police did their job well. Township police first received information in February indicating the massage therapy business was operating as a front for prostitution, according to a police press release from May 28. The Police Departments special investigations unit began an investigation involving undercover operations and keeping the business perimeter under surveillance. After completing the investigation, police forwarded the investigators report to the prosecutors office for review. After Qualls was arrested, police executed search warrants at her Newport home and at her business in Van Buren Township. A Van Buren police officer confirmed Monday that the four women had pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge. The township has revoked the occupancy permit for Holistic Touch & Gifts, prohibiting the business from reopening.
