We, the undersigned Burmese Democratic organizations, are concerned about the current situation
in Burma. Since 1988, the military regime has ignored the genuine desire of the People of Burma
and the engagement of the international community by rejecting the 1990 election results, giving
lengthy prison sentences to democratic activists, politicians, journalists, students, and monks, and
using violence against women as a weapon of war. Throughout the years, the People of Burma have
suffered the consequences of growing economic deterioration, massive layoffs, energy shortages,
high inflation rates and epidemics of infectious diseases.
We also wish to express our deep concern about the trial of our democratic icon, Aung San Suu Kyi,
by the Burmese military regime over a visit from an American citizen. During the first week of May,
an American citizen was detained by Burmese military regime after secretly swimming across Inya
Lake, Rangoon to gain access to the Nobel Laureate’s House. According to the official Burmese
media, he was identified as 53-year old former military serviceman John William Yettaw of Falcon,
Missouri, USA. On 13th of May, an American diplomat was allowed to meet with him. Although his
motives for the alleged lake exploits remain unclear, the regime is using the visit as a reason to put
the Nobel Peace Prize winner in jail under the anti-subversion laws.
Aung San Suu Kyi has spent most of the past 19 years detained in virtual isolation in her crumbing
compound since the junta refused to recognize her party’s landslide victory in the country’s last
election in 1990. Her last period of detention at her home expires at the end of May.
Now, due to the access to her compound by an American citizen, the military generals have a reason
to imprison the most prominent political prisoner up for at least another five years. As Burmese
people, it is our deep conviction that this situation can only be resolved by the active participation
of the international community.
We, therefore, would like to draw to your attention to the following urgent issues that need to be
addressed by the international community:
To temporarily suspend all current aid and assistance programs to the regime
To call on the regime to release Aung San Suu Kyi and all political prisoners unconditionally and
impose the 'costs of staying in power' if the regime does not respond to US, EU and other
international governments’ mediation efforts.
Sincerely,
