July 29Feast of St. Martha.

Martha, Mary and their brother Lazarus were evidently close friends of Jesus. He came to their home simply as a welcome guest, nothing more. No doubt Martha was an active sort of person: she prepares the meal for Jesus and his fellow itinerant friends, and states the obvious: all hands should pitch in to help with the dinner. Marthas great glory is her simple and strong statement of faith in Jesus at the time of her brothers death. Jesus said. I am the resurrection and the life: whoever believes in me, though he should die, will come to life; and whoever is alive and believes in me, will never die. Do you believe this? Martha replied, Yes, Lord, I have come to believe that you are the Messiah, the son of God: he who is to come into the world. To the many Marthas in our midst: Happy Feast Day!

RETAR A DIOS

Apart from the period from Thanksgiving through Christmas, the summer is a favored time for family reunions. We trace family trees and recall our origins. Worship has a family tree as well, and the way we celebrate today has been influenced by various styles and customs through the centuries. We are Western Christians of the Latin Rite. By far, we are the most numerous Western Christians, but there are other ritual families as well. The Archdiocese of Milan in Italy follows the Ambrosian Rite, Toledo in Spain preserves the Mozarabic Rite and the Arab language, and Lyons in France is home to the Gallican Rite. Other liturgical families, such as the Celtic in Ireland and the Sarum in England, faded away after the Reformation. Until recent times, members of some ancient religious orders such as Carmelites and Trappists followed a pattern of Mass that varied slightly from the plan observed in Latin Rite parishes. Isnt the Catholic Church the same everywhere? Not at all. It never has been! The existence of so many liturgical families in the West reminds us that unity, not uniformity, is what the Church seeks to achieve among her children. We are united in faith, but wonderfully diverse in rituals, ceremonies, languages, customs, and spirituality. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co.
The very first indigenous Salesian priests in Sierra Leone:

The ordination took place on July 20, 2013. The Salesians arrived in Sierra Leone in 1986. After 27 years of Salesian presence in Sierra Leone, their efforts were rewarded with three priestly ordinations, and more to follow.
Msgr. Thomas P. Hadden, of the Diocese of Raleigh, was the first African-American to attend Romes North American College. Born in Raleigh, North Carolina, a convert after attending a Catholic school, he wanted to be a priest, but thought that he could not function as a priest in this country because of race. Raleighs late Bishop Vincent Waters, a native Southerner, would not hear of it. He accepted Thomas Hadden fo the seminary and ordained him in 1958. Msgr. Hadden distinguished himself as a pastor, but at least early in his priesthood he faced racial hostility. He died in 2012

Daniel Libby, Paul Turay, Edwin Tangie.

Olinda Sousa.
More than 300 Masses were requested by members of the Portuguese Community for the happy repose of Olinda. Many Masses were sent to be celebrated by the Salesians in Sierra Leone. The Missionaries in Sierra Leone are very grateful for this most welcome and most generous gift. May Olinda rest in the peace of the Lord.
