Point to Point
Point to Point links
One location to One location Typically used for high capacity and/or mission-critical links Narrow beam directional antennas Frequency Agile: Unlicensed 2.4GHz, 5.25-5.85GHz, 60GHz Licensed 6-38GHz Licensed 4.9GHz and 4.4-5.0GHz NATO > Flexible Channel Size 5, 10, 20, 40, 50, 56MHz > Advantage: Highest Capacity, Dedicated link, less vulnerable to interference, more resilient to environmental anomalies, easier to plan. > Disadvantage: Higher cost (on average) > > > >

Point to Multipoint
A wireless multipoint system will have a central location which connects multiple remote locations.
Tsunami GX800
Tsunami MP8100 BSU Tsunami MP8100 SUR

Tsunami MP8100 SUR

Multipoint systems are a cost effective way to connect multiple remote facilities and devices. Sector antenna connected to directional antenna limits interference Frequency agile radios; 5.25-5.85GHz plus adjustable channel sizes: 5, 10, 20 and 40MHz, provide maximum deployment flexibility Common remote devices are cameras, sensors, traffic signs, alarms, etc.

PtMP (Controlled Access)

Each radio is polled one at a time, so they do not self interfere and WORP dynamically figures out which radios require more bandwidth and polls them more frequently.

MESH
Self-Healing, Self-Forming Dynamically assigns mesh route All possible paths are calculated
> Allows instantaneous change if new route is needed

Only one route is active Best path continuously determined based on measurement of: traffic, signal strength, hops and other parameters Advantage: Simple to Deploy Disadvantage: Does not scale to large networks, does not guarantee communication or timing so unsuitable for video or networks requiring precise timing

Actual Path

Wi-Fi Mesh used in a PtMP Topology

For small networks with excess capacity, Wi-Fi Mesh works fine, but when more Mesh nodes are added to a mesh gateway, the load increases which creates errors, causing retransmissions. This reduces overall capacity and as more Mesh nodes are added this creates more errors, further reducing capacity, which degrades all links and video quality.

Wi-Fi Mesh in a traditional topology

Omni antennas are required to enable redundancy in a Mesh network but they pick up interference from 360 degrees so create errors much faster and as more Mesh nodes are added to the network, this increases latency and effects all cameras connected to network

Wi-Fi Mesh vs. WORP

Wi-Fi Mesh Contention Based Protocol > Ethernet > Wi-Fi > Distance measured in meters Designed for LAN based deployments Client driven protocol using CSMA/CA > Every client listens before transmitting Simpler to deploy Good for small networks but doesnt scale to large networks More radios Higher latency Higher Cost
2010 Proxim Wireless. All rights reserved.

WORP Polling Based Protocol > WiMAX > LTE > Distance measured in miles Designed for WAN based deployments Base Station driven protocol using WORP > Base Stations tells each client when they can transmit Certified installers are required Best performance for small to large networks Less radios required Lower latency with less hops Lower cost

MIMO Technology
What is it? > MIMO (Multiple In Multiple Out) is the capability to transmit multiple data streams across multiple RF flow Each RF flow carries different information at any given time.
Radio Tx Radio Radio Radio Radio Radio Rx

3x3

Multipath reflections which are created by Rf waves bouncing off water and buildings now increase SNR because the signal can be received at 1 of 3 antennas so deployments in cities and over water are simpler.

OFDM and MIMO Improves NLOS Capabilities

Line-of-Sight (LOS)

Near Line-of-Sight (nLOS)

Non Line-of-Sight (NLOS)

LOS refers to both visual line-of-sight and clear radio line-of-sight (Fresnel Zone). In nLOS locations, there is clear visual line-of-sight but the radio line-of-sight is blocked. In NLOS locations, both visual and radio lines-of-sight are blocked.
