April 2013

Its been a while since we last put out a club newsletter, but things have been rather busy lately! In this newsletter you can read about the recent TCGB tournament, kup grading and the special visit from Grandmaster Park Hae Man. There are also details of a special sparring training session coming up in May, as well as details of the summer pre-dan seminar and dan grading. We look forward to seeing lots of you in classes over the coming months.

KUP GRADING
Congratulations to everyone who took part in the grading before Easter. There were some super performances and everyone who took part showed the hard work that they had been putting in. The following people have been promoted as detailed below:
Yellow Tag Jonathan Pratt Rebecca Bentley Flynn Ingram Jake Bennett Keira Bennett Jack Pike Holly Brown Amber Brown Caitlin Banks Fintan Banks Yellow Belt James Hicks Rachel Hicks Samuel Hicks Tom Evans Alex Scribbans Archie Withers Alec Mackay Blake John Cullen Johann Lee Rhys Evans Green Tag William Atkinson Aryan Ghosh Green Belt Andrew Richardson Ian Richardson Lahra Starks Blue Tag Connaire Webling Adriana-Cecilia Nastac Red Belt Joe Ward Constantin-Ciprian Barzu

The next kup grading date has not yet been decided; it will be in June or July, before schools break up for the summer holidays. As soon as the date is known, I will send out details.

BE ON TIME FOR LESSONS!!!

Please make sure that you arrive in time to start the lesson promptly. Late arrivals disrupt the lesson and also increase the risk of injuries etc because the students are missing the warm up.

DRINKS
Whilst there is water available at Reception in Swanmore, it disrupts the lessons to have students leaving the hall to get a drink, and the Instructors cannot always keep an eye on the children once they have left the hall. You cant always rely on there being any cups available either!! Please ensure that you bring a drink in a bottle that can be used in the hall.

TCGB NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS BRACKNELL

Saturday 23rd March was the day of the TCGB Annual Tournament in Bracknell. Over the past few years, this has established itself as one of the best tournaments in the south of England and it was completely full two weeks before the final deadline for entries. On the day there were over 100 poomsae (patterns) competitors and well over 200 kyrugi (sparring entries). In amongst the throng was a small team of 6 from Powerhouse TKD and their supporters. Powerhouse TKD again performed excellently and the Instructors would like to say a big well done to the following people: Joe Woollett Gold in patterns, bronze (and a trip to hospital!) in sparring Cip Barzu Gold in patterns, silver in sparring Dalla Nastac Bronze in patterns, silver in sparring Simon Farndell Bronze in sparring (and a subsequent trip to hospital) Special mention to Thais Ward and Master Pat who each competed in the patterns competition, but had unlucky draws and did not manage to get a medal. All the team members represented the club brilliantly and showed great spirit. We all send our best wishes to Simon who actually broke his arm in the tournament, but tried valiantly to carry on. We hope to see him back at training once he is fully mended!

GRAND MASTER PARK HAE MAN

Over the Easter weekend the committee of TCGB received very short notice of a visit by Grand Master Park Hae Man to the UK. Grandmaster Park (10th Dan) is the vice President of Chung do Kwan in Korea and is one of the original Masters in Taekwondo; he was involved in creating the Taegeuks we all learn as coloured belts. Despite being over 80, he still travels the world and teaches, passing on his great knowledge to current students of taekwondo. There are very few of the original Masters still travelling and teaching and it is a great honour that he visits TCGB. Because it was the Easter Holidays, a lot of clubs had stopped lessons for a couple of weeks, so Powerhouse TKD was asked if we would be happy for GM Park to visit to watch the lesson in action. Of course, we were delighted to welcome him (and Grandmaster Biddlecombe) to the lesson. There was the added highlight for those students who had recently graded of receiving his congratulations. Thank you to everyone who came along to the lesson and helped show what a vibrant club we have. Grandmaster Park enjoyed visiting us very much. The following evening GM Park taught at a seminar in Basingstoke at OBTKDs dojang. This was extremely well attended and everyone enjoyed learning from GM Park, GM Biddlecombe and GM Lawrence. Thank you to the Powerhouse TKD members who went to the seminar.

Master Eric Rose Memorial T raining Event
Master Eric Rose from the Korean Taekwondo Association of America was a well respected friend of OBTKD. He was an amazingly talented Taekwondo performer and instructor, great artist and excellent host on our trips to Detroit. Unfortunately Master Rose tragically died last year attempting to rescue a woman from drowning. The memorial event will take the form of a joint sport training session between OBTKD and Powerhouse Taekwondo. The focus will be on matches using the Daedo Electronic Protection Systemsas used at London 2012. Open to all grades and ages. There will not be a charge. However all those attending will be encouraged to make a donation (suggestion is 5 but more welcome!) to a memorial fund established by the KTAA to provide an arts scholarship in Master Eric Roses name. Sunday 19th May 5.005.00-8.00pm VBC Dojang, Vickers Business Centre Priestley Road, Basingstoke, RG24 9NP
