SERIES COMPLETION

Series completion problems deal with numbers, alphabets and both. While attempting to solve the question, you have to check the pattern of the series. Series moves with certain mathematical operations. You have to check the pattern Type of questions asked in the examination : Find the missing term(s) Find the wrong-term(s)

NUMBER SERIES
(i) a, a d, a 2d, a 3d ............................(Arithmetic Progression) (ii) a, a k, ak2, ak3, ........................................(Geometric Progression) (iii) a,

a a a , , , .............................................(Geometric Progression) k k2 k3

(iv) Series of prime numbers i.e. 2, 3, 5, 7, 11,............................... (v) Series of composite numbers i.e. 4, 6, 8, 9, 10, 12, .................

ALPHABET SERIES (SERIES OF LETTERS)

Pattern of alphabets show variation based on : (i) Position of the letters e.g. A, C, E, G, I (ii) Difference between the alphabets e.g. F3X, H7U, J15R

LETTER REPEATING SERIES

Pattern of such questions is that some letters in the sequence are missing. (i) The letters may be in cyclic order (clockwise or anti-clockwise). (ii) To solve a problem, we have to select one of the alternative from the given alternatives. The alternative which gives a sequence form of letters is the choice.

7. Sol. 8. Sol.

A, C, ?, G, I The Series consists of alternate letter in order . So, the missing term would be E. V. T, R, ?, N, ? Given series consists of alternate letters in reverse order. So, the missing terms would be P and L. F3X, H7U, J15R, L31O, ? The first letter of each term is moved two steps forward and the last letter is moved three steps backward to obtain the corresponding letters of the next term. The numbers form the sequence 3 2 + 1 = 7, 7 x 2 + 1 = 15, 15 x 2 + 1 = 31, 31 x 2 + 1 = 63. So the missing term would be N63L. CIR, GMV, KQZ, OUD, ? There is a continuous difference of 4 letters between the first letters of each group, second letters of each group and third letters of each group. So the missing term would be SYH.

Answers: 11. VWZ, 12. QZK, 13. G9T, 14. MTA, 15. (A) babb 11. Sol. ZSD, YTC, XUB, WVA, ? The first letter of each group is in continuation in backward direction. The second letter of each group is in continuation in forward direction. The third letter of each group is in continuation in backward direction. Therefore, the missing term would be VWZ. KTE, SBM, AJU, IRC, ? First letter of each group differ by 8 letters. Second letter of each group differ by 8 letters. Third letter of each group differ by 8 letters. Therefore, the missing term would be QZK. D4V, G10T, J20R, M43P, P90N First letter of every term is moved three steps forward in each next term. Second number of every term of the pattern 2 + 1, x 2 + 2, x 2 + 3............. and third letter of every term is moved two steps backward. Hence, G10T is the wrong term and should be replaced by G9T. ABC, DGJ, HMR, NTA, SBK, ZKV First letter of first, second, third .......... terms is moved three, four, five, ........steps forward respectively. Similarly, second letter is moved five, six, seven, ....... steps forward respectively and third letter is moved seven, eight, nine,......... steps forward respectively. Hence, NTA is the wrong term and should be replaced by MTA. a _ ab _ ba _ a _ ab (A) babb (B) abba (C) baba (D) aabb we proceed step by step to solve the above series : Steps : 1. We have two letters a and b making the series. 2. The first blank space should be filled in by 'b' so that we ha ve one a followed by one b. 3. The series is a b c d e / b c d e a / c d e a b / beabc

Direction: There is a letter series in the first row and a number series in the second row. Each number in the number series stands for a letter in the letter series. Since in each of that series some term are missing you have to find out as to what those terms are, and answer the questions based on these as given below in the series. _m ye_ _ y Ix_yI m__I____ 4 6_ 58 6___57_658_____ The last five terms of the number series are (A) 46758 (B) 74658 (C) 76485 (D) 46785 46758 67485 74658 46785 By taking e = 5, I = 4, m = 6, y = 7 and x = 8 the number series runs as 46758 67485 74658 46785. By taking the digits in the groups of five, we find that first digit of the first group (i.e. 4) is the third digit of the second group and the last two digits have interchanged their positions. The same rule applies in others groups also.

ANSWERS TO EXERCISE
1. 2. 3. 4. (a) Rule is +111, the next number is 387 + 111 =498 (d) Rule is x 2 + 1 or +8, +16, +32, +64 etc. The next number is 127 x 2 + 1 = 255 or 127 + 128 = 255 (a) The rale is x 2 + 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 etc. The next number is x 2 + 5 i.e. 202 x 2 + 5 = 409. (b) The rale is x 2, + the numbers 2, 3, 5,7,11 etc. Thus the next number is 2 x 413 + 11 = 837 (d) The rale is : +2, +3, +5, +7, +11 etc. (prime numbers) (c) The sequence is 1 x 2, 3 x 4, 5 x 6, 7 x 8, 9x 10, 11 x 12 etc (d) Sequence is l2 x 1, 32 x 1, 52 + 1, 72 +1,1 9 2 + 1, ll 2 + 1 etc or +8, +16, +24, +32, +40 etc. The next number is ll 2 + 1 or 82 + 40 i.e. 122. (d) The rule is: Double the number and operate 1 alternately. The next term is 2 x 117 + 1 = 235. (a) Double the number and operate -1, +2, -3,+4,.-5 etc. So, the next number is 2 x 15! -5 = 311 (d) 98 9x8 = 72;72 7x2= 14, 1x4=1;4 (c) Given series is l 3 - l,2 3 -2, 3 3 -3,4 3 4 53 -5, 63 - 6 etc. next term = 73 - 7 = 336 (d) The given series is a combination of two Series I. 1, 3, 7,..., 21 and II. 3, 6, 9, 12. The pattern in the first series is +2, +4, +6, +8. The missing number is 13. (a) Sequence given is a combination of two series: I. 0, 3, 8, 15, 24,... and II. 2, 5,10, 17, 26. The pattern is both the series is +3, +5, +7, +9, etc. (d) Sum of the previous two terms is the next term. the missing term is 13 + 21 = 34. (b) Add the first two terms and then double to get the third term.

(c) First, 2nd, 3rd letters are moving +1, +2, +3 steps. (a) First letter of each term is -2 steps; Second of each term +1, +2, +3, +4 steps forward. Third letter is alternatively moved +2, +3 steps. (d) The number of letters in each term is increasing by one. First letter of each term is+1,+3,+5. (c) +1, +2, +3, +4 in letters; +3, +5, +7, +9 in numbers. (c) +3; 22, 32, 42, 52; -3. (b) The series is aabbcc/aabbcc/aabbcc Thus the pattern aabbcc is repeated. (b) The series is aa bb/aaabbb/aaaabbbb Thus the letters are repeated twice, thrice and four times etc. (a) The series is bccb/bccb/bccb Thus the pattern bccb is repeated. (a) The series is abba/baab/abba/baab Thus the pattern abba, baab is repeated. (c) The series is abc/aabc/aabbc/aabbcc (b) (c) (a) (d) (d) (c) (c) (b) (d) (d) (d) (d) (a) (c) (a) (c) (c) (c) (d) (d)
