Recognizing Shapes

Author(s): Allison Russell Revision Date of Lesson Plan (if applicable): Overall Goal for the Lesson: Review basic shapes, creating patterns, and introducing three dimensional shapes. Description of classroom, grade level, and students: Classroom with a smart board, kindergarten, at the beginning of the year. Student Objectives for the lesson. (Given a condition, the students will, to what level). Without assistance, the student will recognize squares, circles, and triangles with 100% accuracy. Given a starting sequence, the student will be able to continue a pattern of shapes with 80% accuracy.

Length of Lesson: (minutes, number of class periods, or days or weeks needed). As this is a review, this lesson would take place during one math block. This typically lasts about an hour before practicing skills in centers. Schedule of Activities: (Break down your activity into a timeline of events. Focus on what students will be doing and what teachers will be doing during each part of the activity.) 1. The first activity involves two interactive dice on the smart board. Each student will roll a die and identify the shape from a picture or descriptive words. Then, they will tally in the appropriate box. 2. Students will come to the smart board one at a time and sort pictures of everyday objects into shape categories. The teacher ands students together will confirm if they are right. 3. Class will work with patterns all together. Teacher will show nearly

complete patterns and students will yell out which shapes would come next in the sequence. 4. Students will come to the smart board one at a time and complete shape patterns individually. 5. Teacher will do a quick overview of basic 3D shapes. Class will work together during an online quiz to identify these shapes. CC Standards Addressed http://sde.state.ok.us/Curriculum/PASS/default.html -CCSS.Math.Content.K.G.A.1 Describe objects in the environment using names of shapes. -CCSS.Math.Content.K.G.A.2 Correctly name shapes regardless of their orientations or overall size.

ISTE Standard http://www.iste.org/standards/nets-for-students -critical thinking, problem solving, and decision making -technology operations and concepts Assessments: How will these activities be assessed? (Go back to your objectives, what will the students do? Make sure that each objective is paired to an assessment measure that allows students to show it). Understanding of these concepts will be informally observed during center time. Eventually, there will be individual time with the teacher where each student will identify shapes. Materials Needed: Go through each activity and identify what items (both technology and not) are needed to complete this lesson. Include a breakdown according to individual student or student groups. Include materials that need to be created as well. -Smartboard.
