ASSOCIATE PROF. DR AHMAD MALIKI OMAR Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Universiti Teknologi MARA, Malaysia
Ahmad Maliki obtained his B.Eng (Hons) Electrical from the University of Malaya in 1985, MSc (Power Electronics) from Loughborough University of Technology (UK) in 1992 and PhD in Power Electronics from University of Malaya in 2002. He has been a lecturer at the Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering since 1986 and promoted to Associate Professor in 2004. In 1990, he went for industrial and technical training under the look east policy of the Malaysian government in the field of electrical engineering at Daihen Corporation, Osaka, Japan. At UiTM, he has many years of experience in teaching Electrical Engineering courses in the area of Electric Machines, Power Electronics, Programmable Logic Controllers, Peripheral Interface Controller and Digital Design Using Field Programmable Gate Arrays/ Complex Programmable Logic Devices. He is actively participated in national and international innovation and design competition and won many awards. He leads several research projects under IRPA and IRDC/UiTM grants. He has published many technical papers in reputable international journals and conferences proceedings on the subjects of Power Electronics Converters and Automations.

Ishak Ismail obtained his BSc (Hons) in Electrical Engineering from University of Sussex in 1981 and MSc in Electrical Power Engineering from University of Strathcylde in 1987. He is currently a lecturer at the Universiti Teknologi MARA in the Department of Electrical Engineering. At UiTM, he has many years of experience in teaching Electrical Engineering courses in the area of Electric Machines, Power Engineering, Signal and Systems, and Power Electronics. He has also involved in several consultancy works in areas of Power Quality.

Course Outline
COURSE CONTENT The teaching of this course will be a guided hands-on method to make the learning more effective and interesting. Each participant will be provided with a PC and PLC (OMRON CPM2A) to work on. Day 1 Session 1 Electrical Controllers system: Relay Logic and Diagram. Conventional ladder diagram: power ladder and control ladder diagram. Design examples: self-latching, box sorting system, forward-reverse threephase induction motor etc Session 2 Introduction to PLC and SYSWIN Software. Memory map. Sensors and output devices. Sinking-sourcing concept. Input/output lines. Instruction set command: input instructions, output instructions, control instructions and timer/counter instructions Day 2 Session 5 Design examples: applications of input/output units, timers, internal relay, looping and branching. Session 6 Design examples: application of counters, differentiate up/down, and latching. Session 7 Design examples: applications of reversible counters, auxiliary relays (AR), special relays (SR) and expansion functions. Session 8 Interfacing techniques: circuit protections, power handling limitation, cabling, sensors, switches, push button, colour sensors, relays, single-phase AC motor, three-phase AC motor (DOL), DC motor and light indicators.

Session 3 Continue with instruction set command: data comparison instructions, data movement instructions, increment/decrement instructions, logic instructions, high-speed counter control instructions, expansion functions and special system instructions. Session 4 Design techniques: conversion from conventional ladder diagram to PLC ladder format.
