The ORIGINS of ENNEAGRAM

MORE THAN 4500 YEARS OLD
Ennea is Greek for nine and gram means drawing or graph. The enneagram (pronounced any-a-gram) symbol is a circle with nine equidistant points connected by nine intersecting lines. The Enneagrams ancient history is uncertain, although the system first appeared in both Asia and the Middle East several thousand years ago or longer.

The ORIGINS of ENNEAGRAM

The sources of the wider teaching of the Enneagram are thought to be centuries old and the absence of records leads to conflicting ideas. George Gurdjieff was perhaps the first person associated with the Enneagram, who brought it to Europe in the 1930s, but for the most concealed his sources. Oscar Ichazo, a student of Gurdjieff was the first to synthesize the symbol with elements of the teachings about the types, and he too concealed his sources. He was the first to identify the core qualities of each of the nine types. Ichazos work was expanded on by the psychiatrist Claudio Naranjo who also introduced the panel method for gathering information about the types.

The ORIGINS of ENNEAGRAM

The contemporary use of the Enneagram has grown from the work of these three individuals and has been advanced by other teachers, among them Don Riso & Russ Hudson, Helen Palmer,, David Daniels, Theodorre Donson, Kathy Hurley, Tom Condon, and Jerry Wagner. Currently, the Enneagram is being used in a continuously growing array of practical applications (therapeutic, spiritual and business communities) around the world.

THE THREE CENTRES

Each Enneagram style is rooted in one of the three Centres the Head, the Heart & the Body.
HEAD
CENTRE

HEART
CENTRE

The notion of a primary centre, which stems from a long Eastern philosophical tradition, refers to the ways in which we typically react, often internally, to events n our lives. While we all have our heads, hearts and bodies, each of us tends to favour one of these three modalities. Each Centre contains 3 of the Enneagram styles.

THE THREE CENTRES

HEAD
CENTRE

The Head (Thinking) Centre contains Enneagram styles 5, 6 & 7. These three mental styles share the tendency to engage first in elaborate analysis as a reaction to their common emotion, fear/anxiety.

5s respond to fear by withdrawing, retreating into their minds in order to understand. 6s react to their worry and fear by anticipating negative scenarios & planning alternatives to circumvent what could go wrong. 7s deal with fear by moving from worry very quickly into pleasurable possibilities. Although 7s do not appear fearful on the surface, they are actually running from fear and pain an avoidance reaction.

THE THREE CENTRES

HEART
CENTRE

The Heart (Feeling/Emotional) Centre contains Enneagram styles 2, 3 & 4. Individuals with these Heart Centre styles work hard to project a particular image & they use their emotions to perceive how others are responding to them.

2s try to create an image of being likeable and they look to others for affirmation of their self-worth. 3s work to project an image of success & they seek the respect & admiration of others for what they accomplish. 4s try to create an image of being unique or special & they use their emotional sensitivity to defend against rejection.

THE THREE CENTRES

BODY
CENTRE

The Body (Gut/Instinctual) Centre contains Enneagram styles 8, 9 & 1. Anger lies in the emotional substructure of these three styles.

8s tend to express their anger frequently and directly. Their anger, which begins in the gut & moves rapidly up & outward, is stimulated by various events, such as an injustice done to someone, weakness in others, someone taking ineffective control of situation and someones lying. 9ss anger get activated when they feel either ignored or forced to do something, in which case their anger may turn into passive aggressive behaviour. 9s tend to avoid direct anger and conflict, preferring a feeling of rapport and comfort with others. 1ss anger, while deep, often manifests as frequent irritations followed by flares of resentment. 1s also tend toward self-criticism, which is anger turned inward.

ANGER
Eights act out their anger and instinctual energies. Nines deny their anger and instinctual energies. Ones control or repress their anger and instinctual energies. Sevens cope with their anxiety by distracting their minds occupied with exciting possibilities and options. Sixes cope with their anxiety by looking for an external authority or denying their fear in the effort to be free of it. Fives cope with their anxiety about the world by withdrawing from it.

Twos control shame by getting people to like them. Threes deny shame by learning to perform well & be successful. Fours control shame by focusing on their uniqueness & authenticity.

ENNEAGRAM WINGS
The Wings are another refinement offered by the Enneagram system. They recognize that while people are one basic type, almost no one is a pure type. No person is a pure personality type; everyone is a mix of two types, where the second type is the wing. Most people have one dominant wing. People could have a heavy, moderate or light wing. Level of influence over the basic type varies. The basic type and the dominant wing produces a unique Subtype.
