Dear Student Council Members,

RE: Commuter Challenge Student Involvement Initiative

High School – Sustainable Commute Competition

The Commuter Challenge Week of events has traditionally involved those who commute to and from work.
In recent years, students have also been encouraged to participate in this event which aims to reduce the
amount of greenhouse gasses produced by the Hamilton community. We believe that this is an important
message and learning opportunity for students and believe that your participation is vital.

We are asking that you or your entire High School participates in our Sustainable Commute Competition.
For this competition we require that your high school develops a 24 x 36 inch poster or art on canvas or
video project (no longer than 5 minutes in length), which outlines the following:

• How your high school plans to participate in the Commuter Challenge

• What your high school is doing to encourage sustainable transportation for students and teachers
• What forms of transportation are being encouraged (beyond that of the single occupancy vehicle)
• The level of importance/non-importance that this issue has in the lives of students and the citizens of
Hamilton
• Strategies as to how your high school can encourage other citizens in the city to chose more active
forms of transportation.

Note: Each High School can not submit more than 3 projects

Schools are to send their submissions (electronically or by mail) to the City of Hamilton for evaluation. The
school with the most innovative and creative project will receive a fabulous prize!

Deadline for submission must be no later than June 5, 2009 at 4:00 pm.

If you would like more information on the Hamilton Commuter Challenge, please see our website and event
listing at www.hamilton.ca/commuterchallenge.

Thanks in advance for your participation in this worthwhile and engaging event.
