the best world cinema doesn’t
automatically arrive at our screens.
Among the year’s many undistributed
films, I’m particularly fond of Grant
Gee’s “Joy Division,” Johnnie To’s
“Sparrow,” James Benning’s “RR,”
Wang Bing’s “Fengming: A Chinese
Memoir,” and Koji Wakamatsu’s “Unit-
ed Red Army.”
Fortunately, the first two are now
available on DVD.
I don’t have much hope that the
latter two will ever make it to Region
1. Beneath the surface, they share a
lot in common. Both are epic-length

Euan Morton’s angelic sounds; beauty in “Cherry Blossoms”

can’t think of better company with whom to

er, Euan Morton, who’s appearing in “Leaves
of Glass,” by controversial Brit playwright Phil-
ip Ridley (Peter J. Sharp Theatre). In it, he plays
one of two brothers struggling with the legacy of
an alcoholic, abusive father. Morton describes
this intense play as “depressing, heavy stuff,
but beautifully written. It was done in London
with Ben Wishaw and got some rave reviews and
this is its US premiere. I’m quite happy that I’m
offered these straight dramatic parts and am not
totally labeled as a musical performer after [play-
ing Boy George in] ‘Taboo.’ I’d like to have the kind
of career Raul Esparza has, where he goes from
one to the other. He’s so talented, but we never
got really close during ‘Taboo’ –– we had separate
‘star’ dressing rooms, so the opportunity to hang
out wasn’t really there.”
