Question:1 A step down transformer is used for Mobile phones battery charger, the alternating low voltage is passed through a single phase full-wave rectifier, as shown in the diagram. Do the following for the give circuit diagram: (a) Find Vac(rms) required to get Vdc = 9V

(b) Draw the wave shapes as required in the fig (redraw on -answer sheet). Also, indicate the time scale for 50Hz. Question:2 The circuit in fig:c is taken from Electrical Machine book chapter #3 (Power Electronics). Load connected is a resistive load. Please consult the circuit operation from Machine book. Fig:a ; A single phase half wave controlled bridge rectifier (using thyristor also called SCR ) is given. SCR is a semi controlled device. Normal-conditions for SCR to turn on: SCR is in forward like a diode and a positive gate current (Ig) is applied at the gate. Fig:b ; Positive gate current (Ig) is applied at the gate at angle ( = 00 to 180o). By Controlling the firing angle the output DC voltage Vo=Vdc can be varied (controlled). In reverse -biased mode, the SCR behaves like a diode. Fig: c ; C1, C2 variable resistor R and DIAC are generate gate pulses, to conduct the SCR. Variable R is to change the gate angle(also called triggering angle). (a) (b) (c) Suppose the angle (triggering angle) at the gate is 90 degree. Sketch the output voltage wave shape. As given the transformer with 2:1 ratio, primary voltage is 399sin377t V. Find the Vdc ( where Vdc = (0.45/2) Vrms(1+cos))Eq 10.1 page 433 In fig:d the circuit dig:a is redrawn with bridge rectifier circuit and the load is connected in series with the load. Suppose the angle (triggering angle) at the thristor(SCR) gate is 90 degree. Sketch the load output voltage wave shape.

Question:3 A single phase half wave rectifier with RL-load is given. The wave shapes of the input voltage, voltage across the resistance and the output current are given. Sketch wave for: (a) the voltage across the inductance; (b) the power wave shape; indicate the real power(watts) going to the load (Resistance) and power(VAr) going back to the source.[Hints: refer to fig 3.3 (page 73)] Question:4 Voltage-Doubler Rectifier may be used to avoid step-up transformer, is given in the figure. In 115-V position, one capacitor at-a-time is charged from the input. Simulate the operation of the voltage doubler, and explain its operation by subjecting it to 230 and 115volts, and by switching the switch to 220V and 115V.
