could face in our lifetime. As per the scientists if the world warms by 2C warming which may be reached by 2040 which can cause widespread food shortages, unprecedented heat-waves, and more intense cyclones. In the near-term, climate change, which is already unfolding, could batter the slums even more and greatly harm the lives and the hopes of individuals and families who have had little hand in raising the Earths temperature. Climate related extreme events could push households below the poverty trap threshold. High temperature extremes appear likely to affect yields of rice, wheat, maize and other important crops, adversely affecting food security. Promoting economic growth and the eradication of poverty and inequality will thus be an increasingly challenging task under future climate change. Immediate steps are needed to help countries adapt to the risks already locked in at current levels of 0.8C warming, but with ambitious global action to drastically reduce greenhouse gas emissions, many of the worst projected climate impacts could still be avoided by holding warming below 2C
Page 20
sensitive to temperatures above certain thresholds. One study cited in the report found that each growing degree day spent at a temperature of 30 degrees decreases yields by 1% under drought-free rain-fed conditions. The Report asserts that drought-affected areas would increase from 15.4% of global cropland today, to around 44% by 2100. The most severely affected regions in the next 30 to 90 years will likely be in southern Africa, the United States, southern Europe and Southeast Asia, says the report. Supporting the fact, In Africa, the report predicts 35% of cropland will become unsuitable for cultivation in a 5C world. Risks to Human Support Systems: The report also identifies severe risks related to adverse impacts on water availability, particularly in northern and eastern Africa, the Middle East, and South Asia. River basins like the Ganges and the Nile are particularly vulnerable. In Amazonia, forest fires could as much double by 2050. The world could lose several habitats and species with a 4C warming. Non-linear Impacts: There is a high risk of triggering nonlinear tipping elements as global warming approaches and exceeds 2C. The most relevant examples include the disintegration of the West Antarctic ice sheet leading to more rapid sea-level rise, or large-scale Amazon dieback drastically affecting ecosystems, rivers, agriculture, energy production, and livelihoods which would further add to 21st-century global warming and impact entire continents. The projected 4C warming simply must not be allowed to occurthe heat must be turned down. Only early, cooperative, international actions can make that happen.

All this was done under the secret program of US to search the data potentially linked with terrorism, espionage or nuclear proliferation. The US agency tapped into the central servers of different internet giants under the six-year old programme, code-named PRISM. Under this program, the FBI and NSA searched for the emails, videos, photographs, search history, the content of emails, file transfers, live chats and other documents. Existence of the program PRISM was confirmed by James Clapper, US Director of National Intelligence. As per Clapper, the information accessed under the programme is among the most valuable intelligence information collected by the agency and has been helpful in protecting US from a wide range of threats. The IT companies which were directly into surveillance of the US Agency were Microsoft, Yahoo, Google, Facebook, PalTalk, AOL, Skype, YouTube and Apple and all these companies denied the knowledge of surveillance despite the of the claims that the programme was assisted by them. The Government of Bangladesh on 3 June 2013 approved the draft law meant for the development of Hindu religious properties as well as for protection of these properties from land grab and encroachment. The Cabinet gave its final approval to the draft law. The Government of Bangladesh decided to prepare a list of the Hindu charitable endowments also known as Devottar property. A management board will also be constituted once this law will be passed by the Parliament of Bangladesh. A Hindu law expert Advocate Rana Dashgupta explained that since the British era, there is a law meant for protection as well as management of the Muslim Wakf sites. But no such laws have been designed for the Hindu sites. Over the past 10 years, thousands of land pieces of Hindu religious properties were encroached. Therefore, there have been increasing demands of the Hindus for curtailing the incidents of grabbing or encroachment of Devottar property. The draft law has provisions for making sure that the proper management and development of these Devottar properties is done. It also has the provisions for making transfer of the property illegal in case that property has been donated to Hindu Ashrams, monasteries or temples. The draft law additionally has provisions for punishment for the irregularities in management of these properties. Punishments will include jail and heavy fines in case someone is found misleading the board with wrongful information of these properties. Cabinet Secretary Musharraf Hossain Bhuiyan explained that in order to regulate the management and development of these properties, a central board would also be constituted.

The two sides had agreed to the two-day talks, expected to focus primarily on joint economic projects. On the eve of the meeting, the two remained unable to agree on the composition of their delegations. The two Koreas had exchanged undisclosed lists of five representatives, but could not reach a consensus. It was not immediately clear whether the talks, scheduled to take place at a hotel in Seoul, had been postponed or cancelled. The scheduled talks were an opportunity to improve relations after months of military tensions between the two nations. North Korea threatened nuclear war while South Korea issued stern warning in response.

The first of seven pilot carbon emission trading schemes for China was launched in the city of Shenzhen, China on 18 June 2013. It is worth noticing that China is the largest carbon gas emitter of the world. Shenzhen which is situated across border from Hong Kong is among the Special Economic Zones (SEZs) of China. It houses 11 million residents. China committed to bring down the carbon emission intensity by 21 percent by the year 2015. The power plant of the Shenzhen Energy Group sold the emission permit for 10000 tonnes to Guangdong arm of state oil group PetroChina for Rmb28 per tonne or 5 US dollar a tonne, and another 10000 tonnes to Hanergy, a privately owned power generator and solar-panel maker for a price of Rmb30 a tonne. This implies that China has established a carbon market. Carbon markets are the ones which enable the companies to buy permits for emitting carbon dioxide from those companies which burn less carbon. This mechanism is aimed at encouraging the companies for reducing pollution as well as invests their money in the cleaner technologies.

In case the pilot programs launched by China deliver reductions in the carbon emissions in a cost-effective manner and without any negative impact on the economy, they will indicate the future of Chinas approach towards climate change as well as attitude to international agreement in 2015. China also has the plan of launching nationwide carbon trading scheme by 2015. It is also important to note that China has emerged as the top producer of carbon emissions, which are strongly responsible for climate change. This is because of Chinas reliance on heavy industry as well as coal. China, in turn has emerged ahead of US, even though Chinas Per Capita Income is much lower than that of US. China had also declared that the carbon emissions from the country would rise until 2030. However, Beijing planned for a reduction of 40 percent by 2020.

thwart the political mobilisation of the people. It was an attack on democracy, freedom, and free speech and expression. Nothing can be more dangerous than the insurgency of the CPI (Maoist) in the pursuit of its misguided goal of overthrowing Parliamentary democracy and the Constitution of India through violent means. The Indian State cannot, and will not, accept the pernicious Maoist doctrine. The CPI (Maoist) must give up the path of violence and destruction. On this, there can be no compromise. All Parties resolution stated that there is enough room in Parliamentary democracy for dissent and differences of opinion, for redressal of grievances, and for advocacy of the cause of the poor and the downtrodden. We appeal to the youth of the affected States to abjure violence and pursue their goals through legitimate and democratic means. We assure them that the Governments will be sensitive to their concerns and redress any sense of alienation and the injustices of the past. We will make every effort to accelerate development, social inclusion and economic empowerment. The resolution urged that the State Governments as well as the Central Government should adopt the two-pronged strategy of sustained operations to clear the areas of Maoist influence and pursue the objectives of effective governance and rapid development. We urge them to use all legitimate means to defend the security of the country and its institutions and quell armed insurgency and violence. We also urge the State Governments to draw upon their own resources as well as the resources provided by the Central Government to re-establish the rule of law and accelerate development activities in the affected States.

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs on 28 June 2013 approved the continuation of the National Mission on Food Processing (NMFP) for the remainder of 12th Five Year Plan (2013-17) based on detailed proposals submitted by the Ministry of Food Processing Industries (MOFPI). This includes 320 crore rupees already approved for 2012-13, of which 250 crore rupees was the GOI share and 70 crore rupees was the State share. Continuation of NMFP shall help in the decentralization of the implementation of the Ministry`s schemes, which will lead to substantial participation of State Governments / Union Territories (UTs). This in turn would help in the increase in farm productivity, thereby leading to an increase in farmers` incomes. It would also help in ensuring an efficient supply chain by bridging Infrastructural/Institutional Gaps. A National Food Processing Development Council (NFPDC) has been provided for under the chairmanship of the Minister for Agriculture and Food Processing Industries. signed for domestic coal quantity of 65 percent, 65 percent, 67 percent and 75 percent of Annual Contracted Quantity (ACQ) for the remaining four years of the 12th Five Year Plan. To meet its balance FSA obligations, CIL may import coal and supply the same to the willing Thermal Power Plants (TPPs) on cost plus basis. TPPs may also import coal themselves. MoC to issue suitable instructions. Higher cost of imported coal to be considered for passes through as per modalities suggested by CERC. MoC to issue suitable orders supplementing the New Coal Distribution Policy (NCDP). MoP to issue appropriate advisory to CERC/SERCs including modifications if any in the bidding guidelines to enable the appropriate Commissions to decide the pass through of higher cost of imported coal on case to case basis. Mechanism will be explored to supply coal subject to its availability to the TPPs with 4660 MW capacity and other similar cases which are not having any coal linkage but are likely to be commissioned by 31 March 2015, having long term PPAs and a high Bank exposure and without affecting the above decisions.
Background: A proposal had earlier been moved for approval of CCEA for import of coal by CIL in order to meet the shortfall in the domestic coal requirement of the thermal power plants (TPPs) from time to time. In the meeting held on 5 February 2013, the CCEA had laid down certain guidelines for import of coal on cost plus basis/pooling of prices and also directed formation of an Inter-Ministerial Committee (IMC) to consider the cases of power plants with aggregate capacity of about 16000 MW which would be commissioned by 31 March 2015 but are not having any linkage for supply of coal. On the basis of the recommendations of IMC, the matter was further considered by CCEA in the meeting held on 22 April 2013. The CCEA inter-alia directed to consider the feasibility of higher cost of imported coal being allowed as a pass through in case of PPAs signed on competitive bid basis. The revised proposals submitted by Ministry of Coal (MoC) in pursuance of the above directions and in consultation with Ministry of Power and other Ministries were considered by the CCEA.

The survey was based on the responses given by 159 top global companies of the world. The World Investment Report 2013 by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) revealed that the ranking of top five host economies of the world remained unaltered since 2012. China was still leading the list of top most destinations for investment with 46 percent respondents agreeing on it. This was followed by US, which got 45 percent agreeing votes. Among other top five investment destinations as responded by TNCs, were Indonesia and Brazil. An interesting fact about the survey was that, among top five most attractive destinations for investment in the world, four were the developing countries. Apart from this, six out of top 10 prospective host countries were also from the developing world. Thailand and Mexico appeared in this list for the very first time. As far as the developed countries were concerned, Japan climbed up three positions because of its reconstruction efforts after 2011 tsunami as well as expansionary monetary policies, which led to increased attractiveness of the country for foreign investment in the medium term. In the meanwhile, Australia, Russia and United Kingdom came down the rankings in comparison to 2012 survey, while Germany gained two positions.

Prices for the farmed fish like salmon increased faster than the ones captured from the fisheries in 2012. It is predicted that the aquaculture production would elevate to 5.6 percent in 2013. In the meanwhile, the capture of wild fish would increase 0.9 percent. There is a structural shift in the consumer demand because of strong demand for salmon despite higher prices. This will have a positive impact on the salmon producers. Similarly, the demand for tuna fish remains strong despite rising prices. It is forecasted that the overall production of fish will climb 2.9 percent to 161.2 million metric tons in 2013 from 156.7 million tons. The aquaculture output is expected to climb to 70.2 million tons from 66.5 million tons. It is expected that the value of fish exports will climb 2 percent to 130.8 billion US dollar in 2013 after increasing 0.5 percent to 128.2 billion US dollar in 2012. Tuna supplies to Asian canners are not much in 2013, which led to rising prices of canned fish. Japans market for sashimi tuna was strong during beginning of 2013. In the meanwhile, the US market for uncanned tuna was stable. World production for the farmed salmon is forecasted to be changed just a little at 2.01 million tons, while the output will be down 2.3 percent to 1.05 million tons in Norway, which is the largest producer of salmon. It is forecasted that the global food consumption will increase to 19.7 kg per capita this year from 19.2 kilograms in 2012.

In terms of value, nevertheless, Kochi as well as Vizag ports shared almost equal share of earning, i.e., 3344.97 crore and Rs 3265.64 crore respectively in 2013-14 financial year. Vizag registered 26.12 percent jump in terms of value, while Kochi registered 14.22 percent. Pipavav, on the other hand, registered 3 percent increase from 2710.34 crore to 2808.25 crore Rupees. The government has set a minimum support price (MSP) for key crops to give farmers an incentive to produce supplies needed for welfare programmes that give cheap food to half a billion poor. The MSP help protecting the farmers from excessive price falls. India is one of the world's major producers and consumers of grains. It has built up massive stocks of rice and wheat because of abundant harvests encouraged by these assured prices. The government is already making a plan to expand its food subsidy programmes which will need some extra supplies, but the country is still able to export both wheat and rice and sell at preferential prices to domestic bulk buyers.

Current Affairs - June 2013 Ebook GENES OF SNAIL REVEAL MIGRATION PATTERNS OF HUMANS
Page 136
Researchers from the University of Nottingham explained that the genetic similarity between the snail fossils which were found in the Eastern Pyrenees as well as Ireland suggested that human beings migrated from Southern Europe to Ireland 8000 years ago. The fact is that the slippery creatures found in Ireland at present are more or less similar to the snails found in Northern Spain and Southern France. It is believed that Britain was formed at the end of the last Ice Age around 10000 years ago. At that time, the sea levels increased and the landslides caused tsunami. Britain was then transformed into island which segregated mainland Europe from Ireland. This implied that landdwelling animals could not migrate from Europe over the seas. Scientists and researchers, over a long period of time, have remained confused that Ireland is a home to various plants as well as animals which are genetically very different and unique in comparison to the ones found in Britain. Now, the researchers found that the common garden snail known as Cepaea nemoralis is genetically identical to those which are found in Eastern Pyrenees. Nevertheless, it missed Britain during the course of its journey. Analysis of the fossil unveiled that there was a continuous record of the snails in Ireland for 8000 years. Co-author of the study Angus Davison from the University of Nottingham explained that there were evidences of Mesolithic or Stone Age humans that ate snails in Pyrenees. The route in the past was actually ocean and rivers. The river flanking the Pyrenees was the ancient trade route to Atlantic. The study could actually explain the legacy of snails which reflected the ride that was same as humans who traveled from South of France to Ireland 8000 years ago. The implication of this study is that genetics of the snails can depict about the very old human migration event. Population geneticist Dan Bradley from Trinity College, Dublin explained that this study was evident of repeating theme that certain species in Ireland had the same genetic types like that of southern Europe. Earlier, the genetic studies conducted on the humans showcased that there were links between the populations of Southern Europe and Ireland. However, there is a need to understand the ancient DNA for understanding migration patterns of humans.

Rescue operations (Operation Surya Hope) is in process to save the survivors of the disaster. The Indian Air Force, Army, ITBP personnel are engaged day and night to help the people struck in the Himalayan state. Whereas, when seen from the perspective of geologists, if stricter regulations would have existed then the losses from the destructions would have been lesser. Every section of the society is having a different story to say following their scientific knowledge, belief in God and nature and many more things. Few are blaming the central and the state government for turning their blind eye, towards plundering the hills. The heavy rainfall created havoc by affecting the fragile nature of the Himalayan range that is known for its poor soil stability in its steep slopes. Apart from the stability of soil in the peaks of the youngest mountains of the world, the other reasons for the disaster as per the expert are: the blind expansion of the hydro-power projects and unplanned construction of roads in the Himalayan region, to match up with the demands of ever increasing traffic in the area. Geologists from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee and Civil Engineering Department (Hill Area Development) Bureau of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) in their report to the Uttarakhand Government have blamed the Unplanned Construction of roads for the disaster faced by the state. The entire watershed across the 135-km stretch between Gaumukh and Uttarakashi along the Bhagirathi River in December 2012 was declared, as an eco-sensitive zone under the Environment Protection Act, 1986 by the Ministry of Environment and Forests. As per the act, all sorts of construction activity in the region required a complete ban and if it would have been implemented than it would have resulted in the closure of the Hydropower project along Bhagirathi River. As per the provisions of the act, ban on mining and all other types of construction activity in the area needed a complete ban, but the decision has always been opposed by the state government with a claim of barring the development activity in the Himalayan state. Hence as per the experts, mining and construction of big hydropower projects www.jagranjosh.com

LANDSLIDE
A landslide is the gravitational movement of a mass of rock, earth or debris down a slope. Landslides are usually classified on the basis of the material involved (rock, debris, earth, mud) and the type of movement (fall, topple, avalanche, slide, flow, spread).
IMPACTS OF LANDSLIDES
Landslides are one of the most hazardous forms of destruction in mountain regions across the world. Its impact depends upon the type of materials that comes in its way and the weakness of these materials. The landslides in the mountainous and hilly region is a result of dam construction on the hills that blocks the way of the river, bringing up the valley inundation creating pressure on the lake water, resulting in flash floods (floods in which debris flow downwards).

The decision by Genetic Engineering Approval Committee to allow field trials came after the concerns of industry that without the permission of trials, another trial season would be missed, thereby stopping the research activities for third year in a row. A meeting was conducted in New Delhi and in the meeting, GEAC, which is constituted under Union Ministry of Environment, allowed Bayer Bioscience for conducting the event selection trials on 45 transgenic rice events, which also include six genes. There would be a test of insecticidal proteins like Cry1Ab and Cry1Ca, which provide resistance to the crops from insects like stem borer. The field trials of these 5 GM crops would be conducted in various states of India and these include Kerala, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Rajasthan. Bayer Biosciences proposal for conducting the pollen flow study in cotton was also given clearance by GEAC. The pollen flow study in cotton is meant to measure distance pollen containing herbicide tolerant gene flows. Apart from this, Mahycos proposal for conducting the even selection trials was also accepted by the committee. Mahycos proposal includes selection trials at a lot of locations for the experiments in the nitrogen use efficiency in cotton. The validity of trials in castor which is conducted by the Directorate of Oilseeds Research in Hyderabad was also extended by the Genetic Engineering Approval Committee. Directorate of Oilseeds Research had proposed to conduct tests in GM castor by adding Cry1Ec and Cry1Aa genes. This gives resistance to castor against stress and insects.

In order to be eligible for an attempt on Federation Internationale de l'Automobile's (FIA) world electric land speed record, Drayson Racing Technologies team needed to make the vehicle less than 1000 kg of weight without the driver. In order to achieve this eligibility, the team adapted Le Mans Series car which was designed by it earlier and had bio-ethanol fuel engine originally fitted into it. This engine was replaced by lightweight 20 kilowatt hour battery which offered 850 horsepower. Apart from this, the chassis of the vehicle was also adapted. The chassis was made from recycled carbon fibre, which enabled the car to minimise air friction.

Wang Qijie also explained that the innovation would provide help not just to the consumer imaging industry but also to the communication industries, mid-infrared application as well as satellite imaging. The principle behind this new and cheap sensor is use of the light-trapping nanostructures. These nanostructures make use of the graphene as its base. Unlike the conventional sensors, these nanostructures hold the light-generated electron particles for a very long time. Therefore, this helps in stronger electric signal which can then be processed in the image, just like the photograph captured by the digital camera. It is important to note that almost all the camera sensors used today make use of the metaloxide semiconductor as a base. The graphene base therefore is very effective for producing sharper and clearer images.

Androgen receptors are located inside cells. They have complex surfaces with several docking points where various proteins can bind to the receptor. Each docking point has got unique shape, so a molecule of correct shape will fit. Androgen hormones, such as testosterone are described as the primary molecules that bind to androgen receptors. Such binding triggers a series of events that activates various processes in the human body. It also stimulates the development and maintenance of male characteristics.

Scientists, from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing, China discovered a mouse-sized fossil, which provided new insights into the origin of Primates. The discovered fossil is 55 million years old and represents the earliest known member of the group of animals that includes humans. Scientists have named this creature Archicebus, which means ancient monkey. This specimen was discovered some ten years ago in the Jingzhou area of Hubei Province in China, by a local farmer but the researchers took time to describe the creature and its importance. The fossil of the Archicebus was discovered from two slate slabs and the scientists have discovered most of the key bones of the animal, which includes impression of its feet and rear limbs. The skeleton of the discovered fossil explains the branch that occurred at the very base of the primitive evolutionary tree. Archicebus has been put on the line that leads to tarsiers. Tarsiers are the collection of small arboreal animals that are found in south-east Asia. Archicebus will also help in understanding the emergence of tarsiers sister grouping the anthropoids (primates that include monkey, ape and human). The fossil suggests that these small creatures grew to cover the earth soon after the extinction of dinosaurs. It also suggests that the human ancestors were small animals, who were quite active and nimble and lived on trees. To study the fossil, the delicate slate pieces were sent to Grenoble, France for being imaged at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF). This giant machine uses brilliant X-rays to try to discern details of the skeleton that remain hidden inside the rock. The detailed study allowed the scientists to come up with the picture of the type of which Archicebus looked like. Thus it helped them to weigh its relationship with the primates and an idea about the first primates of earth a period when the earth was gripped in a period of outstanding global warming. Skeleton of Archicebus suggests that it used leap and grasp motion to move in the forests that covered the earth at that time. The pointed teeth indicate that it survived on insects and had high metabolic rate. Large eye sockets hint that they had good vision and were day time operators not a nocturnal animal. The finding of the report was published in Nature Magazine.

Hydroxyapatite (HAP) is actually one of calcium phosphate-based bio-ceramic materials which form most of the inorganic components of human bones and teeth. It was also found that the bonding with bone was better for zinc-doped bicalcium phosphate than conventional ceramics. The benefit of Zinc is that it act to improve biological properties of synthetic HAP thus decreasing the inflammatory response and has an antibacterial effect. The scientists while synthesizing zinc doped Hap powder at Jadavpur University have also observed that it exhibits high compressive strength and hardness than the conventional HAP. The scientists have witnessed the pronounced new bone formation in doped HAP with the implantation on the tibia of an adult New Zealand rabbit for two months. The formation of osteons around zinc-doped HAP was also confirmed by the Histopathology. The scientists at Jadavpur University are also developing materials (composition of HAP and beta Tricalcium phosphate) doped with zinc which can be used for bone grafting.

Chief Scientist of the National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT), Vinith Kumar on 11 June 2013 announced that the Early Tsunami Warning System (ETWS) installed at Rangachang in Andaman and Nicobar Islands can predict a tsunami immediately after an earthquake. Vinith Kumar claimed that the new technology installed can predict the Tsunami within 3 minutes after the initial tremors are felt and can send alerts. Following the alerts sent from the Tsunami Warning System, the tsunami alerts can be issued to the risk zones via Centre in consultation with Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services, INCOIS at Hyderabad. To benefit the fishermen, the National Institute of Ocean Technology has also installed 10 Fish Aggregating Devices (FAD) at ten locations in different islands namely Mayabandar, Dilgipur, Chidiayatapu, Hut Bay, Car Nicobar and Campbell Bay for the benefit of fishermen. The devices costs 10 lakh rupees each and has been designed and installed to improve the abilities of fish catching. The center has also developed an Islands Resource Information System (IRIS) for better exploitation of the resources. NIOT is also planning a solar desalination project in the islands.

As per the studies, the charging and discharging of these batteries several times brought wrinkles on the wood but it remained intact. The wrinkles on the wood supported the battery to survive for several cycles as it allowed the battery to relax the stress exerted during regular charging and discharging activity. Tins connection with its base also weakens, while pushing the Sodium ion tin anodes, but softness of the wood fiber serves as a mechanical buffer and accommodates following the changes of the tin. This phenomenon, acts a key of behind the longevity of the sodium-ion batteries. Liangbing Hu and Teng Li were the head of the team that worked on the project. This research was supported by the U.S. National Science Foundation and the University of Maryland. The study details were published in the American Chemical Society Publications.

Current Affairs - June 2013 Ebook ESO DISCOVERED DUSTY SURPRISE AROUND GIANT BLACK HOLE
Page 153
European Southern Observatory (ESO) in the Month of June 2013 gathered the most detailed observations ever of the dust around a huge black hole at the centre of an active galaxy with the help of Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI). The astronomers found that the glowing dust is located above and below the torus rather than being located in a dough nut shaped torus around the black hole. As per the observations it was found that dust is being pushed away from the black hole as a cool wind disrupting the current theories and revealing, evolving supermassive black hole and its interacting with surroundings. Summing up all the last twenty years study by astronomers it was found that almost all galaxies have a huge black hole at their centre. Few of these black holes are growing by drawing in matter from their surroundings, which in turn is creating the process of formation of most energetic objects in the Universe: active galactic nuclei (AGN). According to the new observations of a nearby active galaxy called NGC 3783, harnessing the power of the VLTI at ESOs Paranal Observatory in Chile, have given a team of astronomers a surprise. The newly-discovered dust forms a cool wind which stream outside from the black hole. This wind must play an important role in the complex relationship between the black hole and its environment. The new observation made is going to lead a paradigm shift in the understanding of AGN. They are direct evidence that dust is being pushed out by the intense radiation.

The fighter planes are supposed to be equipped with indigenously-developed glide bombs, which will be guided to their targets for precision attacks. The outstanding feature of bomb is that it can be directed towards their intended targets using guidance mechanisms after being dropped from aircraft of the IAF which in turn will allow the IAF pilots to drop the bombs at their intended targets from stand-off distances as the glide capabilities will help in enhancing the range of the bombs.
Two trials for such bombs already have been carried out by DRDO successfully and there are plans to hold more trials in 2013 for proving the capabilities of the ammunition. DRDO also aims to develop an anti-radiation missile, which will multiply the strike capabilities of the armed forces by destroying the enemy's advance warning system. The Missile can be mounted on Sukhoi fighter planes Su-30 MKI and can detect radar by tracking its electromagnetic radiation and pulses generated and these would be independent of the radar wavelength and be able to destroy it. India and Israel have formed a joint venture under which the IAF and the Navy would get these missile systems.

5 June 2013: World Environment Day World Environment Day was observed on 5 June 2013. The theme for the year 2013 was Think, Eat, Save Reduce Your Foodprint. It aims at an anti-food wastage and loss campaign to encourage people to reduce their foodprint. It also calls for more awareness about the environmental impact of the food choices people make and empowers them to make informed decisions. The theme Think, Eat Save Reduce your Foodprint is aimed at encouraging everyone to reduce the wastage of food by becoming more aware of the environmental impacts of food waste. According to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation, FAO, every year 1.3 billion tonnes of food is wasted. This enormous wastage of food results in devastating effects on natural resources and effects the environment adversely. World Environment Day is held each year on 5 June. Through this day, United Nations (UN) stimulates worldwide awareness of the environment and enhances political attention and action. The International Labour Organization (ILO) estimates 10.5 million children around the world are working as domestic workers in hazardous, sometimes slave-like conditions. The ILO report finds 6.5 million of the 10.5 million child domestic laborers are aged between five and 14 years. More than 70 percent are girls. The United Nations action plan has proposed that the ILO and its member states continue to pursue the goal of effective abolition of child labour by committing themselves to eliminate all its worst forms by 2016. The International Labour Organization (ILO) launched the World Day against Child Labour in 2002 to focus attention on the global extent of child labour and the action and efforts needed to eliminate it. Each year on 12 June, the World Day brings together governments, employers and workers organizations, civil society, as well as millions of people from around the world to highlight the plight of child labourers and what can be done to help them.
