This gentle-seeming asana is a backbend and back strengthener. The position of the arms, and whether or not the legs are lifted, moves the area of the back being worked at any given time.

"Viparita" means reverse, opposite or inverted. Shalabha is a locust. The stretch in this asana is more intense than in Gandha Bherundasana and the movements are converse to those in Halasana.
