While at Edinburgh University studying Law, he studied singing with John and Marie Tainsh. Principal roles in Gilbert & Sullivan with the Edinburgh University Savoy Opera Group led to principal roles with Edinburgh Opera Company, Edinburgh University Opera Club, Opera Camerata and Edinburgh Grand Opera, with whom he has sung most of the major baritone roles in the 19th and 20th Century operatic repertoire, including several Scottish Premieres, and the title roles in Nabucco, Macbeth, William Tell, The Pilgrim's Progress and Prince Igor. With Opera on a Shoestring he was Baron Douphol in their awardwinning La Traviata in Glasgow Mayfest, Malatesta (Don Pasquale), The Sacristan (Tosca), a "Spirit of Mayfest" award winner, and Dr. Grenville (La Traviata). At the same time, he has built up a wide repertoire in oratorio and concert works, performing works ranging from Bach to Walton and giving recitals of Mahler, Schubert, Schumann, Vaughan Williams and Wolf lieder cycles. Recent engagements include Songs of Travel (Vaughan Williams), Winterreise (Schubert), Faures Requiem, Verdis Requiem, Dancairo in Carmen (Bizet), Germont in La Traviata (Verdi) with EGO, Creation (Haydn) and Ich habe genug (Bach).

awarded the Greenwood Music Exhibition to Emmanuel College, Cambridge. While at Cambridge he studied with Peter Katin later gaining a Martin Scholarship and studying in Master Classes in Siena with Guido Agosti and in Bonn with Claudio Arrau. John Bryden has played all over Britain as a soloist, accompanist and chamber musician appearing several times at The Wigmore Hall and The Purcell Room, in France, Italy, Germany and Austria and on television. He is pianist of the Dartington Trio and specialises in one-composer recitals in which he reads from the letters and newspapers of the time. He plays the organ and has accompanied services or given recitals in Cathedrals in the UK and abroad, most recently in Dresden and Salzburg. He is much in demand as a teacher and has coached most years at Dartington International Summer School where he also played for Master Classes given by Joan Dickson, Amaryllis Fleming and Jacqueline du Pre. John has made several recordings. He is a member of the staff of St Mary's Music School. Tuesday 27 August, 1.10pm Duncan Appleby Piano Programme Beethoven Sonata in E flat, op. 7 Berg Piano Sonata op. 1 Percy Grainger Ramble on Love (Transcription of duet from Der Rosenkavalier by Richard Strauss) Duncan Appleby is a fourth-year student at Birmingham Conservatoire. He has accompanied many conservatoire students throughout his time there, both in performances and in various classes. He was the only undergraduate in both singers and accompanists to reach the final of the conservatoire's English Song Prize in 2011, and reached the final of the Lieder Prize this January. Duncan has been involved in external performances with fellow students, for example in two recitals in Birmingham Cathedral. Duncan also sings regularly, most often with choirs; currently, he sings with St. Chad's Cathedral choir in Birmingham, and Birmingham Conservatoire's Chamber Choir.

Danae made her Purcell Room debut (London) in 2009 in the world premiere of Mrs Lazarus, a solo opera by Tim Benjamin with Radius Ensemble. Other premieres

include: Nirmali Fenns Psychotic Episode (ISIS ensemble), Guy Newbury's Adria. Last year Danae made her Glasgow debut as Sylvia Plath in Bee by Kelvin Thomson, and was soprano in residence at the 2nd international composer/performer conference in Athens and this year created the role of The Scientist in The Silence of the Bees: A Science Opera. Other operatic roles include Gretel at the Kings Head Theatre; the title role of Ravels Lenfant et les sortilges (Open Door Opera); Micaela Carmen (Random Opera + Opera in Concert); Lucy The Telephone in a Vodafone store and on tour (Opera Anywhere); Suor Genovieffa Suor Angelica (OCMC); Zerlina Don Giovanni (CarteBlancheOpera) and Emilia Marco Attilio Regolo (Ensemble Serse). As a concert artist, Danae has performed in St Georges, Hanover Square; St Johns Smith Square; Southwell Minster; Holywell Music Room (Oxford), Cardiff, Edinburgh, Athens and Bahrain. Danae also leads education workshops with school children and adults as both a singer and an animateur. She currently studies with Paul Farrington and Ashley Stafford. www.danaeeleni.com Guy Newbury was born in Inverness and educated there and at Magdalen College, Oxford. He studied piano with the late Denis Matthews and with Audrey Innes, and composition with John Joubert and Jonathan Harvey, before undertaking the PhD in Composition at the University of Durham under the supervision of John Casken. His works have been performed by leading soloists and ensembles including the BBC Philharmonic, the BBC Singers, Jane's Minstrels, the Chamber Group of Scotland, Peter Lawson and Andrew Ball; he also maintains a commitment to new music within Oxford University and has received commissions from the Choir of Magdalen College and from the Oxford Sinfonietta. As a performer, he has been chiefly associated with lieder recitals and contemporary music, and is a founder member of Oxford University's new music ensemble, ISIS. Since 1995 he has been Senior Lecturer in Music at Pembroke College.

Thursday 29 August, 1.10pm John Bryden Piano Programme Schubert (1797-1824) Sonata in A minor D.845 Moderato; Andante, poco mosso; Scherzo and Trio; Allegro John Bryden was born in Edinburgh and gave his first BBC broadcast at the age of 14. Two years later he became a member of the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain playing the double bass and was also awarded the Greenwood Music Exhibition to Emmanuel College Cambridge. While at Cambridge he studied with Peter Katin and also studied in Siena with Guido Agosti and in Master Classes in Bonn to celebrate Beethovens Bi-Centenary with Claudio Arrau. He has also greatly valued the advice of Sir Clifford Curzon and Hans Keller. John Bryden has played all over Britain as soloist, chamber musician and accompanist appearing several times at the Wigmore Hall and the Purcell Room. He has also played in France, Italy, Germany, Austria and Hungary as well as around the world on board the M.S. Saga Rose. He is pianist of the Dartington Piano Trio and has been a regular coach at the Dartington International Summer School where he played for Master Classes given by Jacqueline Du Pre. He much enjoys teaching at St Marys Music School and has made several recordings including an acclaimed recording of chamber music by Martinu on Hyperion Label. As a Course Leader for A.C. E. Study tours John regularly takes music-lovers to Europes capital and festival cities where he is privileged to play in the homes of composers such as Haydn, Beethoven, Grieg, Liszt, Chopin and Schumann. Friday 30 August, 1.10pm Miyuki Kato Piano Programme Poulenc Nocturne no.1 Tausig Introduction and Tarantella op.2 Chopin Nocturne B major op.62-1 Schubert/Liszt Soires de Vienna no.6 Beethoven Piano Sonata C minor op.111 Miyuki Kato was born in Japan and came to the UK in 1997 as an exchange student and spent a year at grammar school in Kent. While she was there she met with a piano teacher, Dr Michael Schreider, and decided to study the piano for her profession, though her first plan of coming to the UK was to become a ballet costume designer. In 1999 she started education at the Royal Northern College of Music, Manchester. After the first year, she decided to transfer to the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama (RWCMD) to study with Dr Schreider, where she graduated in 2003 with BMus first for performance and the Ivor Coles Memorial Award. In 2005 she graduated from the Postgraduate Diploma course at the RWCMD. During her studies at the RWCMD she won the Jacobson Piano Prize, Chamber Music Prizes and Accompaniment Prize. She was awarded MMus in Performance at the Royal College of Music, where she studied with Gordon Fergus-Thompson, in 2008. Miyuki has given a number of concerts in the UK, Seychelles and Japan, including a recital in St Martin-in-the-Fields, and the interlude performance in Service of Thanksgiving for Sir Hardy Amies at St Jamess Church, Piccadilly, London. She performed for the Edinburgh Fringe in 2010. In summer 2011 she was invited to the Seychelles by the Ministry of Culture to give a master class and as an accompanist for the ABRSM exams at the National Conservatoire Seychelles. Miyuki gained the fourth prize at the International Piano Competition in Gargano, Italy in 2003, and won the First Prize at the National Eisteddfod in 2004. She won a Diploma of the London International Music Competition in August 2005. Recently she won the 3rd prize at the Chopin Golden Ring Piano Competition (Historical piano category) in 2012.

Saturday 31 August, 11am Please note change of time for this concert Alba Brass Programme John Maxwell Geddes Dances of the Scottish Court Terry Johns Paolozzi's Window Cecilia McDowall Tango Oscura (Scottish Premiere) Victor Ewald Quintet No.3 Alba Brass are exciting brass quintet players from Scotland who are adding their own original style to traditional brass music. Since their 2004 debut at the Aracena International Chamber Music Competition in Spain, they have appeared at concerts and festivals all over Europe, Russia, North America and the Middle East. In addition to performing the standard brass quintet repertoire, Alba Brass regularly commission new work that includes vocal, jazz and folk elements. Recent premieres include Shorthand of Emotion by Ryan Quigley and Souch by Martin Green at the 2012 Edinburgh Fringe Festival. UnPlanFares for brass quintet and Scottish traditional music quartet by Steve Foreman was premiered at the 2010 PLUG Festival and Paolozzis Windows for brass quintet and piano by Terry Johns was premiered at the 2010 Edinburgh Fringe Festival. In October 2011 Alba Brass collaborated with Sax Ecosse and The Whistlebinkies in the premiere performance of Eddie McGuires UCS Work In Suite. Alba Brass has recently been recorded for the BBCs Songs of Praise and has also recorded for STVs Spirit of Scotland awards. In addition to this, members of Alba Brass can often be seen playing with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Scottish Chamber Orchestra and the Scottish Ballet Orchestra.
