San Juan police chief Bernard Tambaoan looks at the bullet holes of the car ridden by Letran Knight player Franz Dysam after he was shot by two persons riding in a motorcycle last Saturday. Dysams companion, identified as Joan Sordan, was killed in the attack. (Ali Vicoy)

Games Today (The Arena, San Juan) 4 p.m. - San Sebastian vs EAC 6 p.m. - Mapua vs Perpetual Police are looking at a possible love triangle behind the shooting of Letran point guard Franz Dysam and the death of his woman companion identified as Joan Sordan early Saturday night. Dysam and Sordan were with four others, aged 3 months to 16 years old, inside the players car when two men riding in tandem in a motorcycle fired at them on N. Domingo St., San Juan City at around 6:30 p.m. Dysam had just come from an NCAA basketball game that saw Letran beat Lyceum at The Arena. Dysam, a backup guard, had zero points.

Dysam was hit six times but survived the attack and is scheduled to undergo surgery to remove the bullets, sources said. The four others in the vehicle escaped injury. They were identified as Carl Sordan, 15, Angelo Sordan, 12, and Paulo Jay Punta, 16 and a three-month old baby. It could not be established yet what the relationship Dysam had with Sordan, 33, who died from a gunshot wound in the chest after she was brought to the hospital. A 24-hour security has been provided the Letran player who has been transferred to another hospital for security reasons. Doctors said Dysam is in stable condition. The Letran community is behind Franz in his rally. All assistance, including moral and spiri tual, is given him. He is consistently being prayed for especially by the Letran priests, the school statement said. Dysams mother had already arrived from Cebu and is with her son. According to Supt. Bernard Tambaoan, chief of police in San Juan, the investigators are looking at all possible angles in solving this horrific incident. Kukumpletuhin muna natin ang detalye, lahat ng posibleng motibo tinitingnan natin, love triangle, yung history and backgroun d nung girl, lahat yun nasa imbestigasyon, he sa id. Some sources said that the couple has been harassed by a former policeman who reported to be Sordans former lover. But this has not been confirmed. This is the second time a college player has been shot. In 2008, Far Eastern Universitys Mac Baracael was shot outside the school campus. His attacker had not been arrested. Meanwhile, University of Perpetual Help and San Sebastian seek for their respective third straight wins today when they face separate foes in the NCAA Season 89 at The Arena in San Juan. The Altas collide with the skidding Mapua Cardinals at 6 p.m., while the Stags class with the Emilio Aguinaldo College Generals in the 4 p.m. opening game. Toting a 4-1 card, a win for Perpetual would share them a second-place seat with defending champion San Beda and move them just one game behind pacesetter Letran (5-0). The Altas were enjoying back-to-back wins against the Lyceum Pirates (71-66) and Arellano Chiefs (73-66) the past week. Rookie Juneric Baloria will continue to spearhead the squad with his impressive average of 21.8 points a game, while Nosa Omorogbe, Harold Arboleda, Chris Elopre and Scott Thompson will serve as big reinforcements. Yan ang pinapangarap ko sa team, e. Lahat umiiskor, uma -assist, sana magtuluy-tuloy na ito, del Rosario said.

Belmonte elected house speaker anew

Quezon City Rep. Feliciano Sonny Belmonte Jr. will again lead the House of Representatives after receiving support from the new batch of lawmakers on Monday. During the opening of the 16th Congress, majority of 289-man House picked Belmonte to be House speaker over two other nominees in an election that was held at about 10 a.m. on July 22. Belmonte, who served as House speaker in the previous Congress, won a landslide victory with 245 votes against San Juan City Rep. Ronaldo Zamora and Leyte Rep. Martin Romualdez. House Secretary-General Marilyn Barua-Yap declared a quorum after 267 lawmakers attended the morning session in

Lower Congress for the election of the speaker. Belmonte was nominated by Western Samar Rep. Mel Sarmiento, Tarlac Rep. Enrique Cojuangco, and Camarines Sur Rep. Ronaldo Andaya, who described him as a turn-around specialist. We need determined and wise leadership We need a speaker who is dynamic enough to lead the Congress in a confusing time, Andaya said. Makati Rep. Abigail Binay, the daughter of Vice President Jejomar Binay, described Belmonte as the best leader who can guide congressmen in the House of Representatives. Ilocos Norte Rep. Rodolfo Farinas praised Belmonte for leading Lower Congress in passing the General Appropriations Act for three consecutive years. But Neophyte Taguig Rep. Lino Cayetano nominated Zamora as House speaker while Cavite Rep. Lani Mercado nominated Romualdez. Neophyte Kabataan party-list Rep. Terry Ridon accepted Zamoras nomination on behalf of the progressive bloc in the House of Representatives. If Zamora is our speaker, we believe that Congress will win historic victories again, Ridon said. Only Navotas Rep. Toby Tiangco abstained from the voting process. Zamora received 18 votes while Romualdez only got 16 votes, making him the new House minority leader. According to House rules, the nominee who will lose in the speakership will automatically assume the role of the leader of the minority bloc in the House of Representatives Since there had been three nominees for speakership race, acting House majority leader Neptali Boyet Gonzales II clarified the nominee with second highest votes automatically becomes the House minority leader. Zamora managed to snatch the leadership of the House minority bloc in a hairline victory against Romualdez, the nephew of former First Lady and Ilocos Norte Rep. Imelda Marcos. Romualdez, who is on his third and final term as congressman, is also the president of Lakas, the political party still associated with former President and Pampanga Rep. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. Zamora first served as representative of San Juan City in 2001, serving as House minority leader before stepping down in 2010. Former San Juan City Rep. Joseph JV Ejecito-Estrada replaced him from 2010 to 2013 before winning the senatorial elections last May. Belmonte earlier expressed surprise when he received endorsement from President Benigno Noynoy Aquino III, who he said did not hint about his plan for election in the Lower House. Belmonte began his government service as the presidential staff assistant of President Diosdado Macapagal, after which serving in various agencies in the government. These include Commission of Customs, Central Bank of the Philippines and as head of the Government Service Insurance System (GSIS). He was first elected as representative of Quezon Citys fourth district, serving his full three consecutive terms from 1992. He served as House speaker before he stepped down in 2001.

Belmonte gained national prominence when he became the leader of the prosecutor team in the impeachment trial against former President President Joseph Erap Estrada. In 2001, Belmonte was elected as mayor of Quezon City and made it as the most competitive city in the National Capital Region (NCR) it is today.

LONDONThe Duchess of Cambridges pregnancy has seen her endure illness, media frenzies, bikini shot scandals and a prank that ultimately ended in tragedy. Though she is giving birth in a plush private hospital wing with top royal gynaecologists on hand and her every whim catered for, Catherines pregnancy got off to a troubling start. The news that Prince Williams wife was expecting a baby was released on December 3, after she was taken to hospital suffering from acute morning sickness. Three days earlier, Kate had shown no sign of discomfort as she played hockey on a visit to one of her former schools. But joy at the news of a baby, tinged with concern for the duchesss condition, soon turned to anger and then tragedy. During her three-night stay at King Edward VIIs Hospital in London, a hoax phonecall made by two Australian radio presenterspretending to be Queen Elizabeth II and Williams father Prince Charlesresulted in details of Kates condition being divulged. The stunt, by Michael Christian and Mel Greig, triggered a global media storm of its own and sparked a backlash against the presenters and the radio network. Jacintha Saldanha, the Indian nurse who answered and put through the call, was found hanged on December 7, having taken her own life. William and Kate were left deeply saddened by her death, a spokesman said. Englands state prosecutors decided not to charge the radio hosts, saying that however misguided, the telephone call was intended as a harmless prank. Looking well, Kate returned to public duties on December 16 at the BBC Sports Personality of the Year awards. But in February, pictures of the royal couple holidaying on the Caribbean island of Mustique were printed in Italian and Australian publications, showing Kate in a bikini, her baby bump clearly visible. Infuriated, St Jamess Palace called it a clear breach of the couples right to privacy. It came after topless pictures of the duchess had been published the previous September, incensing the royals. Britains media got themselves into a frenzy in early March, believing Kate had accidentally given away the sex of their baby while meeting members of the public on a visit to a fishing town. National newspapers ran front-page headlines reading Its a girl! However, recordings of the exchange revealed nothing of the sort. Is this for us? Oh, thank you so much, its very, very sweet of you, she said as she was handed a teddy bear. Did you nearly say my daughter? a 67-year-old woman a few metres away asked shortly afterwards. No, no, no, the duchess replied. We dont know. But the molecule of confusion was enough to get the papers all in a lather. The duchess carried out her final solo public engagement on June 13, launching a new liner in the southern English port of Southampton, sending a 15-litre bottle of champagne smashing into its hull. Two days later in London, she made her last public appearance before giving birth, attending the Trooping the Colour military pageant Queen Elizabeth IIs official 87th birthday celebrations. On June 19, palace sources gave the first confirmed details about the birth, saying Kate hoped for a natural delivery and that they will not know the babys sex until it arrives. It was revealed that she would be giving birth in the private Lindo wing of St Marys Hospital in Paddington, central Londonwhere William himself was born to Prince Charles and princess Diana. Media organisations immediately began a vigil outside, their territory marked out on the pavement. Kate spent the month since then off duty, splitting her time between her parents countryside home and Kensington Palace in L ondon. She was admitted to St Marys on Monday, with William joining her for the short drive from the palace. While the monarchy is on Twitter, the birth will be announced to the world in the traditional methoda notice on an easel in the Buckingham Palace forecourt.

Pnoy sona MANILA, Philippines President Benigno Aquino III on Monday urged Filipinos to help him continue with the task of transforming the Philippines as he discussed a long list of achievements on his third year as chief executive. In his fourth State of the Nation Address (SONA) delivered before the joint session of the 16th Congress, Aquino dwelled on the political changes and economic gains that took place under his administration and paid tribute to public servants who had shown outstanding work. Once, I was told: Noynoy, just begin the change. So we did, and we can all see how far we have come. Now, my countrymen, let us continue to stand arm-in-arm, Aquino said. Together, let us foster, accelerate, and expand the transformation of society. I am Noynoy Aquino, and I proudly say to the world: I am a Filipino. How wonderful to be a Filipino today, he said. Among those public servants who drew praises from Aquino were Education Secretary Armand Luistro, Police Offier 3 Edlyn Arbo, who fought an armed thief, PO3 Felipe Moncatar for putting in jail several criminals. The President also used his SONA to rebuke erring government agencies. He strongly castigated shameless public servants who he described as makapal ang mukha (thick faced) public servants.

Aquino zeroed in on the agencies that do not want to change their ways like the Bureau of Immigration, Bureau of Customs and the National Irrigation Administration. He said he would never grow tired instituting reforms until the dignity of public service is restored, but he admitted his patience has run out for erring officials and employees in government who he vowed to pursue and hold accountable. For those employees who refuse to turn their backs on the culture of wang-wang: my patience has run out, Aquino said in Filipino during his fourth State of the Nation Address. You were given three years to demonstrate your readiness to change; now, I shall pursue all of you and hold you accountable. No hard feelings, he said. The gains of the administration that Aquino reported to the people, include:

Better infrastructure, specifically road projects. He said that roads that were left to decay in the past are now truly benefiting the people, citing the Ternate-Nasugbu Road connecting Cavite, Batangas, and Metro Manila. More jobs. Aquino said under the electronics and semiconductor program, the percentage of employed graduates reached 85 percent. Poverty alleviation. Aquino said his objective to expand the reach of the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program has been achiev ed. The 700,000 household beneficiaries we found upon coming into office in 2010 have now grown to almost 4 million households in the three years of our administration, he said. Education. Aquino said his administration has finally erased the backlog it inherited in books and chairs, adding that if Education Secretary Armin Luistro continues to demonstrate true grit, even the backlog we inherited in classrooms will also be erased. He more the administration now has the ability to prepare for the additional needs that the implementation of the K to 12 program will require. Agriculture. Citing records from NFA, Aquino said in 2010, the country imported more than 2 million metric tons of rice. In 2011, this fell to 855,000 metric tons. In 2012: 500,000 metric tons. And now in 2013: the maximum we will import, including the private sector, will be the minimum access volume of 350,000 metric tons, he said. This includes the 187,000 metric tons of reserve buffer stock in cas e typhoons arrive one after the other; in all likelihood, even the private sector will no longer have to import rice because we are still on track to becoming self-sufficient in rice.
