market marketnotes notes

produce market report July 30, 2013

These beautiful, delicate heirlooms just arrived from Amish Country and they have that homey goodness, combined with juicy summertime tomato flavor. They wont last!

Local Corner
Crown Orchards near Charlottesville is still sending truckloads of local peaches. They are now shipping white peaches, donut peaches as well as yellow peaches. Eggplant, peppers and jalapeno peppers are all coming in reliably from Pennsylvania, Parker Farms VA, and from South Carolina. Due to the stifling heat and wet conditions affecting most local sources, we have had to move a bit further afield. White, bicolor and yellow corn all thrive in the heat so this is a booming crop year around here for corn. Both Virginia and Maryland are rushing their crops to market. Come and get em! Westmoreland and Cole Berry Farms are bringing us their famous giant, ripe blackberries. Cucumbers are now coming from both Pennsylvania and Maryland. These cukes escaped the water-logged situation that we were facing the last few weeks. Imagine the eye-popping appeal of local yellow meat watermelons from Lois Produce. They are flying off the shelf this week! The same is true for red seedless watermelons which are now coming in from South Carolina. We also have tasty sweet local cantaloupe from Shlagel Farms. Lois is also still sending us gold cherry tomatoes. Dont forget local heirlooms from PA and VA. Green cabbage is really nice right now from Torey Farms in upstate NY. Some local cabbage, especially red has burnt edges buried in the heads. English peas from local sources have been affected by heat conditions.

Keep in Mind:
Avocados are down in price this week with improved supply and availability of the 48ct size. Quality is buttery and delicious! The price of cherries came down a bit this week in spite of the unseasonably warm weather in Washington. Rainiers available with 2 days notice. Black mission figs in full pints are here from California. Red globe, Flame, green and black seedless grapes are all in good stock.

There has been a shortage of watercress but we expect the problem to be resolved this week. Our supplier, B&W has assured us that quality has returned to normal. Production continues in full strength for new crop cantaloupes and honeydews from the San Joachin Valley of California. Availability is plentiful for most sizes. These are the best quality melons of the year! We continue to offer sumptuous stone fruit. Load up on California stone fruit like pluots, plums, nectarines, and peaches.
