recited the verse: 'I (Abraham) see in a dream, (O my son) that I offer you in sacrifice (to
Allah)." (37.102) (See Hadith No. 183)
Narated By Anas bin Malik : Whenever Allah's Apostle went to answer the call of nature,
I along with another boy used to accompany him with a tumbler full of water. (Hisham
commented, "So that he might wash his private parts with it.)"
were just passing wet hands over our feet (not washing them thoroughly) so he addressed
us in a loud voice saying twice orthriae, "Save your heels from the fire."
Narated By Um-'Atiya : That the Prophet at the time of washing his deceased daughter
had said to them, "Start from the right side beginning with those parts which are washed
in ablution."
they have come to know that he was a believer. On the other hand a hypocrite or a
doubtful person will reply, 'I do not know but heard the people saying something and so I
said the same.'"
Narated By Ibn Shihab : Mahmud bin Ar-Rabi' who was the person on whose face the
Prophet had ejected a mouthful of water from his family's well while he was a boy, and
'Urwa (on the authority of Al-Miswar and others) who testified each other, said,
"Whenever the Prophet , performed ablution, his companions were nearly fighting for the
remains of the water."
a Mikhdab (brass tub) belonging to Hafsa, the wife of the Prophet. Then, all of us started
pouring water on him from the water skins till he beckoned to us to stop and that we have
done (what he wanted us to do). After that he went out to the people."
Narated By Al-Mughlra bin Shu'ba : Once Allah's Apostle went out to answer the call of
nature and I followed him with a tumbler containing water, and when he finished, I
poured water and he performed ablution and passed wet hands over his Khuffs.
graves. The Prophet said, "These two persons are being tortured not for a major sin (to
avoid)." The Prophet then added, "Yes! (they are being tortured for a major sin). Indeed,
one of them never saved himself from being soiled with his urine while the other used to
go about with calumnies (to make enmiy between friends). The Prophet then asked for a
green leaf of a date-palm tree, broke it into two pieces and put one on each grave. On
being asked why he had done so, he replied, "I hope that their torture might be lessened,
till these get dried."
A hadith like this is narrated from the Apostle (may peace be upon him)
with the same chain of transmitters by Muhammad b. Muthanna, Ibn
Bashshar, Muhammad b. Ja'far, Shu'ba.

Chapter : Purification is essential for prayer.
Humran, the freed slave of 'Uthman, said: Uthman b. 'Affan called for
ablution water and this is how he performed the ablution. He washed his
hands thrice. He then rinsed his mouth and cleaned his nose with water
(three times). He then washed his face three times, then washed his
right arm up to the elbow three times, then washed his left arm like
that, then wiped his head; then washed his right foot up to the ankle
three times, then washed his left foot like that, and then said: I saw
the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) perform ablution like
this ablution of mine. Then the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon
him) said: He who performs ablution like this ablution of mine and then
stood up (for prayer) and offered two rak'ahs of prayer without
allowing his thoughts to be distracted, all his previous sins are
expiated. Ibn Shihab said: Our scholars remarked: This is the most
complete of the ablutions performed for prayer.
Humran, the freed slave of 'Uthman said: I saw Uthman call for a vessel
(of water) and poured water over his hands three times and then washed
them. Then he put his right hand in the vessel and rinsed his mouth and
cleaned his nose. Then he washed his face three times and his hands up
to the elbow three times; then wiped his head, then washed his feet
three times. Then he said that the Messenger of Allah (may peace be
upon him) had said: He who performed ablution like this ablution of
mine and offered two rak'ahs of prayer without allowing his thoughts to
be distracted, all his previous sins would be expiated.
Humran, the freed slave of 'Uthman said: I heard from 'Uthman b. 'Affan
and he was in the courtyard of the mosque, when the Mu'adhdhin
(announcer of the prayer) came to him at the time of afternoon prayer.
So the ('Uthman) called for the ablution water and performed ablution
and then said: By Allah, I am narrating to you a hadith. If there were
not a verse in the Book of Allah, I would have never narrated it to
you. I heard Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) say: If a Muslim
24
performs ablution and does it well and offers prayer, all his (sins)
daring the period from one prayer to another would be pardoned by Allah.
This hadith is also narrated on the authority with the same chain of
transmitters and in the hadith of Abu Usama the words are: "He who
performed the ablution well and then offered the obligatory prayer."
'Amr b Sa'id b al-As reported: I was with Uthman that he called for
ablution water and said: I heard Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon
him) say: When the time for a prescribed prayer comes, if any Muslim
perform ablution well and offers his prayer) with humility and bowing,
it will be an expiation for his past sins, so long as he has not
committed a major sin; and this applies to for all times.
------------------------------
Chapter : The merit of Wudu and that of prayer after it.
Abu Anas reported that Uthman performed ablution at Maqi'aid and said:
Should I not show you the ablution performed by Allah's Messenger (may
peace be upon him)? And he then washed (the different parts of the
body) three times.4" Qutaiba has added in his narration the words:
"There were with him (with Uthman) Companions of Allah's Messenger (may
peace be upon him)."
Humran b. Abin reported: I used to fetch water for 'Uthman for his
purification. Never was there a day that he did not take a bath with a
small quantity of water. And Uthman said: The Messenger of Allah (may
peace be upon him) at the time of our returning from our prayer told us
(certain things pertaining to purification). Mis'ar said: I find that
it was afternoon prayer. He said: I do not know whether I should tell
you a thing or keep quiet. We said: Messenger of Allah, tell us if it
is good and if it is otherwise, Allah and His Apostle know better. Upon
this he said: A Muslim who purifies (himself) and completes
purification as enjoined upon him by Allah and then offers the prayers,
that will be expiatious (of his sins he committed) between these
(prayers).
Humran, the freed slave of Uthman reported: One day Uthman b. Affan
performed the ablution well, and then said: I saw Allah's Messenger
(may peace be upon him) perform ablution, the best ablution, and then
observed: He who performed ablution like this and then went towards the
mosque and nothing (but the love of) prayer urged him (to do so), all
his previous (minor) sins would be expiated.
------------------------------
Chapter : The merit of Wudu and that of prayer after it.
Abu Huraira reported that the Messenger of Allah (way peace be upon
him) said: Five prayers and one Friday prayer to (the next) Friday
prayer are expiatious (for the sins committed in the intervals) between
them.
Abu Huraira reported: Verily the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon
him) said: Five (daily) prayers and from one Friday prayer to the
(next) Friday prayer, and from Ramadhan to Ramadhan are expiatious for
the (sins) committed in between (their intervals) provided one shuns
the major sins.
'Uqba b. 'Amir reported: We were entrusted with the task of tending the
camels. On my turn when I came back in the evening after grazing them
in the pastures, I found Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him)
stand and address the people. I heard these words of his: If any Muslim
performs ablution well, then stands and prays two rak'ahs setting about
them with his heart as well as his face, Paradise would be guaranteed
to him. I said: What a fine thing is this ! And a narrator who was
before me said: The first was better than even this. When I cast a
glance, I saw that it was 'Umair who said: I see that you have just
come and observed: If anyone amongst you performs the ablution, and
then completes the ablution well and then says: I testify that there is
27
no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the servant of Allah and His
Messenger, the eight gates of Paradise would be opened for him and he
may enter by whichever of them he wishes.
'Abdullah b. Zaid b. 'Asim al-Ansari, who was a Companion (of the Holy
Prophet), reported: It was said to him (by people): Perform for us the
ablution (as it was performed) by the Messenger of Allah (way peace be
upon him). He ('Abdullah b. Zaid) called for a vessel (of water), and
poured water from it on his hands and washed them three times. Then he
inserted his hand (in the vessel) and brought it (water) out, rinsed
his mouth and snuffed up water from the palm of one hand doing that
three times, He again inserted his hand and brought it out and washed
his face three times, then inserted his hand and brought it out and
washed each arm up to the elbow twice, then inserted his hand and
brought it out and wiped his head both front and back with his hands.
He then washed his feet up to the ankles, and then said: This is how
God's Messenger (peace be upon him) performed ablution.
Malik b. Anas narrated it from 'Amr b. Yahya with the same chain of
transmitters, transmitters and mentioned the rinsing (of mouth) and
snuffing (of water into the nostrils) three times, but he did not
mention "from one palm," and made this addition: He moved them (his
hands) for wiping to the front of his head and then the nape of his
neck, then bringing them back till he reached the place from which he
had begun, after which he washed his feet.
28
Babz reported: This hadith has been narrated by Wuwb on the authority
of 'Amr b. Yahyi with the same chain of transmitters and it has been
mentioned therein: He rinsed his mouth, snuffed up water in nostrils
and cleaned the nose with three handfuls and wiped his head moving (his
hand) in front and then back once. Bahz said: Wuhaib narrated this
hadith to me and Wuhaib said: Amr b. Yahya narrated to me this hadith
twice.
Abu Huraira reported Allah's Apostle (may peace be upon him) as saying:
When anyone wipes himself with pebbles (after answering the call of
nature) he must make use of an odd number and when any one of you
performs ablution he must snuff in his nose water and then clean it.
Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah (way peace he upon him)
said: When anyone performs ablution he must clean his nose and when
anyone wipes himself with pebbles (after answering the call of nature)
he must do that odd number of times.
29
It has been transmitted by Abu Huraira and Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (both of
them the reputed Companions of the Holy Prophet) that the Messenger of
Allah (may peace be upon him) said like that.
Abu Huraira reported: The Apostle of Allah (may peace be upon him)
said: When any one of you awakes up from sleep and performs ablution,
he must clean his nose three times, for the devil spends the night in
the interior of his nose.
Salim, the freed slave of Shaddad, said: I came to 'Aisha, the wife of
the Holy Prophet (may peace be upon him), on the day when Sa'db. Abi
Waqqas died. 'Abd al-Rahman b. Abu Bakr also came there and he
performed ablution in her presence. She (Hadrat 'Aisha) said: Abd al-
Rahman, complete the ablution as I heard the Allah's Messenger (may
peace be upon him) say: Woe to the heels because of hell-fire.
Salim, the freed slave of Mahri, reported: I and 'Abd al-Rahman b. Abu
Bakr went out (in order to join) the funeral procession of Sa'd b. Abi
Waqqas and passed by the door of the residence of 'Aisha, and then he
transmitted a hadith like this from her who (narrated it) from the Holy
Prophet (may peace be upon him).
Salim, the freed slave of Shaddad b. al-Had said: I was in the presence
of 'Aisha, and then narrated on her authority a hadith like this from
the Holy Prophet (way peace be upon him).
Abu Huraira reported: Allah's Apostle (may peace be upon him) saw a man
who did not wash his heel and he remarked: Woe to the heels because of
hell-fire.
31
Abu Huraira reported: He saw people perform ablution with the help of a
water jar and he said: Complete the Wudu for I heard Abu al-Qasim (may
peace be upon him) say: Woe to the hamstrings because of hell-fire.
Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him)
said: Woe to the heels because of hell-fire.
Abu Huraira reported: Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) said:
When a bondsman-a Muslim or a believer-washes his face (in course of
ablution), every sin he contemplated with his eyes will be washed away
from his face along with water, or with the last drop of water; when he
washes his hands, every sin they wrought will be effaced from his hands
with the water, or with the last drop of water; and when he washes his
feet, every sin towards which his feet have walked will be washed away
with the water or with the last drop of water with the result that he
comes out pure from all sins.
Abu Huraira reported: Verily Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him)
said: My Cistern has its dimensions wider than the distance between
Aila and Aden, and its water is whiter than ice and sweeter than the
honey diluted with milk, and its cups are more numerous than the
numbers of the stars. Verily I shall prevent the (faithless) people
there-from just as a man prevents the camels of the people from his
fountain. They said: Messenger of Allah will you recognise us on that
day? He said: Yes, you will have distinctive marks which nobody among
the peoples (except you) will have; you would come to me with blazing
forehead and bright hands and feet on account of the traces of ablution.
Abu Huraira reported the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him)
said: My people would come to me on the Cistern and I would drive away
persons (from it) just as a person drives away other people's camels
from his camels. They (the hearers) said: Apostle of Allah, would you
recognize us? He replied: Yea, you would have a mark which other people
will not have. You would come to me with a white blaze on your
foreheads and white marks on your feet because of the traces of
ablution. A group among you would be prevented from coming to me, and
they would not meet me, and I would say: O my Lord, they are my
companions. Upon this an angel would reply to me saying: Do you know
what these people did after you.
Hudhaifa reported: The Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) said:
My Cistern is bigger than the space between Aila and Aden. By Him in
Whose Hand is my life, I will drive away persons (from it) just as a
person drives away unknown camels from his cistern. They (the
companions) said: Messenger of Allah, would you recognise us? He said:
Yes, you would come to me with white faces, and white hands and feet on
account of the traces of ablution. None but you would have (this mark).
Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him)
came to the graveyard and said: Peace be upon you ! the abode of the
believing people and we, if God so wills, are about to join you. I love
to see my brothers. They (the hearers) said: Aren't we your brothers -
Messenger of Allah? He said: You are my companions, and our brothers
are those who have, so far, not come into the world. They said:
Messenger of Allah, how would you recognise those persons of your Ummah
who have not yet been born? He said: Supposing a man had horses with
white blazes on fore- heads and legs among horses which were all black,
tell me, would he not recognise his own horses? They said: Certainly.
Messenger of Allah. He said: They would come with white faces and arms
and legs owing to ablution, and I would arrive at the Cistern before
them. Some people would be driven away from my Cistern as the stray
camel is driven away. I would call out. Come; come. Then it would be
said (to me): These people changed themselves after you, and I would
say: Be off, be off.
Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah (may peace The upon him)
went out to the graveyard and said: Peace be upon you, the abode of the
believing people and If Allah so wills we shall join you... (and so on
and so forth) like the hadith narrated by Isma'il b. Ja'far except the
words of Malik: Then some persons would be driven away from my Cistern.
Abu Hazim reported: I was (standing) behind Abu Huraira and he was
performing the ablution for prayer. He extended the (washing) of his
hand that it went up to his armpit. I said to him: O Abu Huraira, what
is this ablution? He said: O of the tribe of Faruukh, you are here; if
I knew that you were here, I would have never performed ablution like
this; I have heard my Friend (may peace be upon him) say. In a believer
adornment would reach the places where ablution reaches.
Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him)
said: Should I not suggest to you that by which Allah obliterates the
sins and elevates the ranks (of a man). They (the hearers) said: Yes,
Messenger of Allah. He said: Performing the ablution thoroughly despite
odds, tranverside of more paces towards the mosque, and waiting for the
next prayer after observing a prayer, and that is mindfulness.
This hadith has been narrated on the authority of Ali' b. 'Abd al-
Rahman with the same chain of transmitters and there is no mention of
the word of al-Ribat in the hadith transmitted by Shu'ba and in the
badith narrated by Malik "Ribat" has been mentioned twice. This is the
"Ribat" for you, this is the "Ribat" for you.
Abu Huraira reported: The Apostle (may peace be upon him) said: Were it
not that I might over-burden the believers-and in the hadith
35
Miqdam b. Shuraih narrated it from his father who said: I asked 'Aisha
what Allah's Apostle (may peace be upon him) did first when he entered
his house, and she replied: He used tooth-stick (first of all).
Abu Musa reported: I went to the Apostle (may peace be upon him) and
found one end of the tooth-stick upon his tongue (i.e. he was rinsing
his mouth).
Ibn 'Abbas reported that he spent a night at the house of the Apostle
of Allah (may peace be upon him), The Apostle of Allah (way peace be
upon him) got up for prayer in the latter part of the night. He went
out and looked towards the sky and then recited this verse (190th) of
Al-Imran: "Verily in the creation of the heavens and the earth and the
alternation of night and day." up to the (words) "save us from the
torment of Hell." He then returned to his house, used the tooth-stick,
performed the ablution, and then got up and offered the prayer. He than
lay down on the bed and again got up and went out and looked towards
the sky and recited this verse (mentioned above), then returned, used
the tooth-stick, performed ablution and again offered the prayer.
Abu Huraira reported: Five are the acts quite akin to the Fitra, or
five are the acts of Fitra: circumcision, shaving the pubes, cutting
the nails, plucking the hair under the armpits and clipping the
moustache.
Anas reported: A time limit has been prescribed for us for clipping the
moustache, cutting the nails, plucking hair under the armpits, shaving
the pubes, that it should not be neglected far more than forty nights.
Ibn Umar said: The Apostle of Allah (may peace be upon him) said: Trim
closely the moustache, and let the beard grow.
Ibn Umar said: The Apostle of Allah (may peace be upon him) ordered us
to trim the moustache closely and spare the beard.
Ibn Umar said: The Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) said: Act
against the polytheists, trim closely the moustache and grow beard.
Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him)
said: Trim closely the moustache, and grow beard, and thus act against
the fire-worshippers.
'Aisha reported: The Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) said:
Ten are the acts according to Fitra: clipping the moustache, letting
the beard grow, using the tooth-stick, snuffing water in the nose,
cutting the nails, washing the finger joints, plucking the hair under
the armpits, shaving the pubes and cleaning one's private parts with
water. The narrator said: I have forgotten the tenth, but it may have
been rinsing the mouth.
This hadith has been narrated by Mus'ab b. Shaiba with the same chain
of transmitters except for these words: "His father said: I forgot the
tenth one."
Salman reported that it was said to him: Your Apostle (may peace be
upon him) teaches you about everything, even about excrement. He
replied: Yes, he has forbidden us to face the Qibla at the time of
excretion or urination, or cleansing with right hand or with less than
three pebbles, or with dung or bone.
Salman said that (one among) the polytheists remarked: I see that your
friend even teaches you about the excrement. He replied; Yes, he has in
fact forbidden us that anyone amongst us should cleanse himself with
his right hand, or face the Qibla. He has forbidden the use of dung or
bone for it, and he has also instructed us not to use less than three
pebbles (for this purpose).
Jabir reported: The Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) forbade
the use of bone or the droppings of camels for wiping (after excretion).
Abu Ayyub reported: The Apostle of Allah (may peace be upon him) said:
Whenever you go to the desert, neither turn your face nor turn your
back towards the Qibla while answering the call of nature, but face
towards the east or the west. Abu Ayyub said: When we came to Syria we
found that the latrines already built there were facing towards the
Qibla. We turned our faces away from them and begged forgiveness of the
Lord. He said: Yes.
Abu Huraira said: When any one amongst you squats for answering the
call of nature, he should neither turn his face towards the Qibla nor
turn his back towards it.
Abu Qatada reported it from his father: The Messenger of Allah (may
peace be upon him) said: None of you should hold penis with his right
hand while urinating, or wipe himself with his right hand in privy and
should not breathe into the vessel (from which he drinks).
Abu Qatada reported it from his father that the Messenger of Allah(may
peace be upon him) said: When anyone amongst you enters the privy he
should not touch his penis with his right hand.
Aba Qatada reported: The Messenger of Allah (way peace be upon him)
forbade (us) to breathe into the venal, to touch the penis with the
right hand and to wipe after relieving with right hand.
'Aisha reported: The Messenger of Allah (way peace be upon him) loved
to start from the right-hand side for performing ablution, for combing
(the hair) and wearing the shoes.
'Aisha reported: The Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) loved
to start from the right-hand side in his every act i.e. in wearing
shoes, in combing (his hair) and in performing ablution.
Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him)
said: Be on your guard against two things which provoke cursing. They
40
(the companions present there) said: Messenger of Allah, what are those
things which provoke cursing? He said: Easing on the thoroughfares or
under the shades (where they take shelter and rest).
Anas b. Malik reported: The Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him)
entered an enclosure while a servant was following him with a jar of
water and he was the youngest amongst us and he placed it by the side
of a lote-tree. When the Messenger of Allah,(may peace be upon him)
relieved himself, he came out and had cleansed himself with water.
Anas b. Malik reported: When the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon
him) entered the privy, a servant and I used to carry a skin of water,
and a pointed staff, and he would cleanse himself with water.
Anas b. Malik reported: The Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him)
went to a far-off place in the desert (hidden from the sight of human
beings) for relieving himself. Then I brought water for him and he
cleansed himself.
Hummam reported: Jarir urinated, then performed ablution and wiped over
the socks. It was said to him: Do you do like this? He said: Yes, I saw
that the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) urinated, then
performed ablution and then wiped over his shoes. A'mash said: Ibrahim
had observed that this hadith was a surprise for them (the people)
because Jarir had embraced Islam after the revelation of Surat al-
Ma'ida.
Hudhaifa reported: I was with the Apostle of Allah (may peace be upon
him) when he came to the dumping ground of filth belonging to a
particular tribe. He urinated while standing, and I went aside. He (the
Holy Prophet) asked me to come near him and I went so near to him that
I stood behind his heels. He then performed ablution and wiped over his
socks.
Abu Wa'il reported: Abu Musa inflicted extreme rigour upon himself in
the matter of urination and urinated in a bottle and said: When the
skin of anyone amongst the people of Israel was besmeared with urine,
he cut that portion with a cutter. Hudhaifa said: I wish that your
friend should not inflict such an extreme rigour. I and the Messenger
of Allah (may peace be upon him) were going together till we reached
the dumping ground of filth behind an enclosure. He stood up as one
among you would stand up and he urinated, I tried to turn away from
him, but he beckoned to me, so I went to him and I stood behind him,
till he had relieved himself.
This hadith has been transmitted with the same chain of transmitters by
Yahya b. Sa'id with the addition of these words: "He washed his face
and hands, and wiped his head and then wiped his socks."
himself. He then came and I poured water upon him from the jar that I
carried with me. He performed ablution and wiped over his socks.
'Urwa b. Mughira reported his father having said: I was one night with
the Apostle of Allah (may peace be upon him) on a journey. He said to
me: Have you any water with you? I said: Yes. He (the Holy Prophet)
came down from his ride and went on till he disappeared in the darkness
of night. He then came back and I poured water for him from the jar. He
washed his face, He had a woollen gown on him and he could not bring
out his forearms from it (i.e. from its sleeves) and consequently he
brought them out from under his gown. He washed his forearms, wiped
over his head. I then bent down to take off his socks. But he said:
Leave them, for my feet were clean when I put them in, and he only
wiped over them.
the washing of the feet after putting them off), but he (the Holy
Prophet) said: I put them (feet) in when these were clean.
Ibn Mughira narrated it from his father: The Apostle of Allah (may
peace be upon him) wiped over his socks and over his forehead and over
his turban.
This hadith has been transmitted by Ibn Mughira on the authority of his
father by another chain of transmitters.
Bakr reported that he had heard from the son of Mughira that verily the
Apostle of Allah (may peace be upon him) performed ablution and wiped
over his forehead and wiped over his turban and over his socks.
Shuraih b. Hani said: I came to 'Aisha to ask her about wiping over the
socks. She said: You better ask ('Ali) son of Abu Talib for he used to
travel with Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him). We asked him and
he said: The Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) stipulated (the
upper limit) of three days and three nights for a traveller and one day
and one night for the resident.
Shuraib b. Hani reported: I asked 'Aisha about wiping over the shoes.
She said: You better go to 'Ali, for he knows more about this than I.
I, therefore, came to 'Ali and he narrated from the Apostle (may peace
be upon him) like this.
Abu Huraira said: When anyone amongst you wakes up from sleep, he must
not put his hand in the utensil till he has washed it three times, for
he does not know where his hand was during the night.
Zahri and Ibn Musayyab have both transmitted a hadith like this from
Abu Huraira who narrated it from the Apostle (may peace be upon him).
Abu Huraira reported: The Apostle of Allah (may peace be upon him)
said: When anyone amongst you wakes up from sleep, he should wash his
hands three times before putting it in the utensil, for he does not
know where his hand was during the night.
Abu Huraira reported the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) to
have said: When a dog licks a utensil belonging to any one of you, (the
46
thing contained in it) should be thrown away and then (the utensil)
should be washed seven times.
Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him)
said: When a dog drinks out of a vessel belonging to any one of you, he
must wash it seven times.
Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him)
said: The purification of the utensil belonging to any one of you,
after it is licked by a dog, lies in washing it seven times, using sand
for the first time.
Ibn Mughaffal reported: The Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him)
ordered killing of the dogs, and then said: What about them, i.e. about
other dogs? and then granted concession (to keep) the dog for hunting
and the dog for (the security) of the herd, and said: When the dog
licks the utensil, wash it seven times, and rub it with earth the
eighth time.
A hadith like this has been narrated from Shu'ba with the same chain of
transmitters except for the fact that in the hadith transmitted by
Yahya those words are: "He (the Holy Prophet) gave concession in the
case of the dog for looking after the herd, for hunting and for
watching the cultivated land," and there is no mention of this addition
(i.e. concession in case of watching the cultivated lands) except in
the hadith transmitted by Yahya.
Jabir reported: The Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) forbade
to urinate in stagnant water.
Abu Huraira reported: the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him)
said: None amongst you should urinate in standing water, and then wash
in it.
Abu Huraira reported the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him)
saying: None of you must wash in standing water when he is in a state
of Junub. And Abu Huraira was asked how it was to be done; he said: It
was to be taken out in handfuls.
'Aisha, the wife of the Apostle (may peace be upon him) said: Babies
were brought to the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) and he
blessed them, and after having chewed (something, e.g. dates or any
other sweet thing) he rubbed there with their soft palates. A baby was
brought to him and he passed water over him (over his garment), so he
asked water to be brought and sprinkled it, but he did not wash it.
Hisham narrated the hadith like one transmitted by Ibn Numair (the
above mentioned one) with the same chain of transmitters.
Umm Qais daughter of Mihsan reported that she came to the Messenger of
Allah (may peace be upon him) with her child, who was not yet weaned,
and she placed him in his lap; and he urinated in his (Holy Prophet's)
lap. He (the Holy Prophet) did nothing more than spraying water over it.
This hadith has also been narrated from al-Zuhri with the same chain of
narrators. (but for the words): "He (the Holy Prophet) sent for water
and sprinkled it over."
Alqama and Aswad reported: A person stayed in the house of 'Aisha and
in the morning began to wash his garment. 'Aisha said: In case you saw
it (i.e. drop of semen), it would have served the purpose (of purifying
the garment) if you had simply washed that spot; and in case you did
not see it, it would have been enough to sprinkle water around it, for
when I saw that on the garment of the Messenger of Allah (may peace be
upon him). I simply scraped it off and he offered prayer, while putting
that on.
Al-Aawad and Hammam reported 'Aisha as saying: I used to scrape off the
(drop of) semen from the garment of the Messenger of Allah (may peace
be upon him).
Qutaiba b. Sa'id, Ishaq b. Ibrahim, Ibn Abi 'Aruba, Abu Ma'shar, Abu
Bakr b. Abu Shaiba, Mansur and Mughira have all transmitted from
Ibrahim, who transmitted it on the authority of 'Aisha's narration
pertaining to the scraping off of the (drop) of semen from the garment
of the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) like the hadith of
Khalid on the authority of Abu Ma'shar.
'Amr b. Maimun said: I asked Sulaiman b. Yasir whether the semen that
gets on to the garment of a person should be washed or not. He replied:
'Aisha told me: The Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) washed
the semen, and then went out for prayer in that very garment and I saw
the mark of washing on it.
Abu Kuraib, Ibn al-Mubarak, Ibn Abu Za'ida all of them narrated from
Amr b. Maimun with the same chain of transmitters. Ibn Abu Za'ida
51
narrated as was transmitted from Ibn Bishr that the Messenger of Allah
(may peace be upon him) washed semen, and in the hadith transmitted on
the authority of Ibn Mabarak and Abdul Wahid the words are: "She
('Aisha) reported: I used to wash it from the garment of the Messenger
of Allah (may peace be upon him)."
This tradition is narrated by Abu Kuraib, Ibn Numair, Abu Tahir, Ibn
Wahb, Yahya b. 'Abdullah b. Salim, Malik b. Anas, 'Amr b. Harith on the
authority of Hisham b. 'Urwa, with the same chain of transmitters like
one transmitted by Yahya b. Sa'id like the above-mentioned.
Ibn Abbas reported: The Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him)
happened to pass by two graves and said: They (their occupants) are
being tormented, but they are not tormented for a grievous sin. One of
them carried tales and the other did not keep himself safe from being
defiled by urine. He then called for a fresh twig and split it into two
parts, and planted them on each grave and then said: Perhaps, their
punishment way be mitigated as long as these twigs remain fresh.
Yahya related to me from Malik from Amr ibn Yahya al-Mazini that his
father once asked Abdullah ibn Zayd ibn Asim, who was the grandfather
of Amr ibn Yahya al-Mazini and one of the companions of the Messenger
of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, if he could show him
how the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace,
did wudu. Abdullah ibn Zayd ibn Asim agreed to do so and asked for
water to do wudu. He poured some out on to his hand and washed each
hand twice and then rinsed his mouth and snuffed water up his nose and
blew it out three times. Then he washed his face three times and both
of his arms up to the elbows twice. He then wiped his head with both
hands, taking his hands from his forehead to the nape of his neck and
then bringing them back to where he had begun. Then he washed his feet.
Yahya related to me from Malik from Abu'zZinad from al-Araj from Abu
Hurayra that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him
peace, said, "When you do wudu, snuff water into your nose and blow it
out, and if you use stones to clean your private parts use an odd
number."
Yahya related to me from Ibn Shihab from Abu Idris al-Khawlani from Abu
Hurayra that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him
peace, said, "The person doing wudu should snuff water up his nose and
blow it out again."
Yahya said that he heard Malik say that there was no harm in washing
the mouth and cleaning the nose with only one handful of water.
Yahya related to me from Malik that he had heard that Abd ar-Rahman ibn
Abi Bakr was visiting A'isha, the wife of the Prophet, may Allah bless
him and grant him peace, on the day that Sad ibn Abi Waqqas died, and
he asked for some water to do wudu. A'isha said to him, ''Abd ar-
Rahman! Perform your wudu fully, for I heard the Messenger of Allah,
may Allah bless him and grant him peace, say, 'Woe to the heels in the
fire.'"
Yahya related to me from Malik from Yahya ibn Muhammad ibn Talhafrom
Uthman ibn Abd ar-Rahman that his father related to him that he had
heard that Umar ibn al-Khattab used to wash what was beneath his waist
wrapper with water.
Yahya said that Malik was asked what a man should do if, when he did
wudu, he forgot and washed his face before he had rinsed his mouth, or
washed his forearms before he had washed his face. He said, "If someone
washes his face before rinsing his mouth, he should rinse his mouth and
not wash his face again. If someone washes his forearms before his
face, however, he should wash his forearms again so that he has washed
them after his face. This is if he is still near the place (of wudu)."
Yahya said that Malik was asked about what a man should do if he had
forgotten to rinse his mouth and nose until he had prayed, and he said,
"He does not have to repeat the prayer, but should rinse his mouth and
nose if he wishes to do any more prayers after that."
Yahya related to me from Malik from Abu'zZinad from al-Araj from Abu
Hurayra that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him
peace, said, "When you wake up from sleep to pray, wash your hands
54
before you put them in the wudu water, for you do not know where your
hands have spent the night."
Yahya related to me from Malik from Zayd ibn Aslam that Umar ibn al-
Khattab said, "If you fall asleep lying down you must do wudu (before
you pray)."
Yahya related to me from Malik from Zayd ibn Aslam that the ayat "You
who believe! When you rise for prayer wash your faces, and your arms to
the elbows, and wipe over your heads and your feet up to the ankles,"
refers to rising from bed, meaning sleep.
Yahya said that Malik said, "The situation with us is that one does not
have to do wudu for a nose-bleed, or for blood, or for pus issuing from
the body. One only has to do wudu for impurities which issue from the
genitals or the anus, or for sleep."
Yahya related to me from Malik from Nafithat Ibn Umar used to sleep
sitting and then would pray without doing wudu.
Yahya related to me from Malik from Safwan ibn Sulaym from Said ibn
Salama of the Bani Azraq from al-Mughira ibn Abi Burda of the tribe of
Bani Abd ad-Dar that he had heard Abu Hurayra speak about a man who
came to the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him
peace, and said, "Messenger of Allah! We travel by sea and we do not
carry much fresh water with us so if we do wudu with it we go thirsty.
Can we do wudu with seawater?" The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless
him and grant him peace, replied, "its water is pure, and its dead
creatures are halal."
Yahya related to me from Malik from Ishaq ibn Abdullah ibn Abi Talha
from Humayda bint Abi Ubayda ibn Farwa that her maternal aunt Kabsha
bint Kab ibn Malik, who was the wife of the son of Abu Qatada al-
Ansari, told her that once Abu Qatada was visiting her and she poured
out some water for him to do wudu with. Just then a cat came to drink
from it, so he tilted the vessel towards it to let it drink. Kabsha
continued, "He saw me looking at him and said, 'Are you surprised,
daughter of my brother?' I said, 'Yes.' He replied that the Messenger
of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, cats are not
impure. They intermingle with you.'"
55
Yahya said that Malik said, "There is no harm in that unless one sees
impurities on the cat's mouth."
Yahya related to me from Malik from Yahya ibn Said from Muhammad ibn
Ibrahim ibn alHarith at-Taymi from Yahya ibn Abd ar-Rahman ibn Hatib
that Umar ibn al-Khattab set out on one occasion with a party of
riders, one of whom was Amr ibn al-As. They came to a watering place
and Amr ibn al-As asked the man who owned it whether wild beasts drank
from it. Umar ibn al-Khattab told the owner of the watering place not
to answer, since the people drank after the wild beasts and the wild
beasts drank after them.
Yahya related to me from Malik from Nafi that Abdullah ibn Umar used to
say that men and their wives used to do wudu together in the time of
the Messenger of Allah.
Yahya related to me from Malik from Muhammad ibn Umara from Muhammad
ibn Ibrahim that the mother of the son of Ibrahim ibn Abd ar-Rahman ibn
Awf questioned Umm Salama, the wife of the Prophet, may Allah bless him
and grant him peace, and said, "I am a woman who wears a long skirt and
(sometimes) I walk in dirty places." Umm Salama replied, "The Messenger
of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, 'What follows
(i.e. clean places) purifies it.'"
Yahya related to me from Malik that he saw Rabia ibn Abd ar-Rahman
vomit several times when he was in the mosque and he did not leave, nor
did he do wudu before he prayed.
Yahya said that Malik was asked whether a man who vomited food had to
do wudu and he said, "He does not have to do wudu, but he should rinse
the inside of his mouth and wash his mouth out."
Yahya related to me from Malik from Nafi that Abdullah ibn Umar
prepared the body of one of Said ibn Zayd's sons for burial and carried
it and then entered the mosque and prayed without doing wudu.
Yahya said that Malik was asked whether it was necessary to do wudu
because of regurgitating undigested food and he said, "No, wudu is not
necessary, but the mouth should be rinsed."
Yahya related to me from Malik from Zayd Aslam from Ata ibn Yasar from
Abdullah Abbas that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and
grant him peace, ate a shoulder of lamb and then prayed without doing
wudu.
Yahya related to me from Malik from Yahya ibn Said from Bushayr ibn
Yasar, the mawla of the Bani Haritha, that Suwayd ibn anNuman told him
that he went with the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant
him peace, on the expedition to Khaybar. When they reached as Suhba,
which was near Khaybar, the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and
grant him peace, stopped and prayed asr. He asked for provisions but
only parched barley was brought, so he asked for it to be moistened.
The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, ate
and the people ate with him. Then he got up to do maghrib and rinsed
his mouth out and they rinsed out theirs. Then he prayed without doing
wudu.
Yahya related to me from Malik that both Muhammad ibn al-Munkadir and
Safwan ibn Sulaym transmitted to him from Muhammad ibn Ibrahim ibn al-
Harith at-Taymi from Rabia ibn Abdullah ibn al-Hudayr that he had eaten
an evening meal with Umar ibn al-Khattab who then prayed without doing
wudu.
Yahya related to me from Malik from Damra ibn Said al-Mazini from Aban
ibn Uthman that Uthman ibn Affan ate bread and meat, rinsed his mouth
out, washed his hands and wiped his face with them, and then prayed
without doing wudu.
57
Yahya related to me from Malik that he had heard that Ali ibn Abi Talib
and Abdullah ibn Abbas did not do wudu after eating cooked food.
Yahya related to me from Malik from Yahya ibn Said that he asked
Abdullah ibn Amir ibn Rabia whether a man who did wudu for prayer and
then ate cooked food had to do wudu again. He said, "I saw my father do
that without doing wudu."
Yahya related to me from Malik from Abu Nuaym Wahb ibn Kaysan that he
heard Jabir ibn Abdullah al-Ansari saying, "I saw Abu Bakr as-Siddiq
eat meat and then pray without doing wudu."
Yahya related to me from Malik from Muhammad ibn al-Munkadir that the
Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, was
invited to eat, and some bread and meat was brought to him. He ate some
of it, and then did wudu and prayed. Then more of the same food was
brought and he ate some more and then prayed without doing wudu.
It was related to me from Malik from Musa ibn Uqba from Abd ar-Rahman
ibn Yazid al-Ansari that when Anas ibn Malik came back from Iraq, Abu
Talha and Ubayy ibn Kab visited him. He brought them some cooked food
and they ate, and then Anas got up and did wudu. Abu Talha and Ubayy
ibn Kab asked, "What's this, Anas? Is it an Iraqi custom?" and Anas
said, "I wish I had not done it." (i.e. wudu). Abu Talha and Ubayy ibn
Kab both got up and prayed without doing wudu.
Yahya related to me from Malik from Hisham ibn Urwa from his father
that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace,
58
was asked about cleaning after excretion. He replied, "Are any of you
unable to find three stones?"
Yahya related to me from Malik from al-Ala ibn Abd ar-Rahman from his
father from Abu Hurayra that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless
him and grant him peace, went to the burial grounds and said, "Peace be
upon you, home of a people who believe! We shall be among you, Allah
willing. I wish that I had seen our brothers!" The people with him
said, "Messenger of Allah! Are we not your brothers?" "No," he said,
"You are my companions. Our brothers are those who have not yet come.
And I will precede them to the Hawd. (The Hawd: the watering place of
the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, from which he
will give to the people of his community on the day of rising.)" They
asked him, "Messenger of Allah! How will you recognise those of your
community who come after you?"
He said, "Doesn't a man who has horses with white legs and white blazes
on their foreheads among totally black horses recognise which ones are
his own?" They said, "Of course, Messenger of Allah." He went on, "Even
so will they come on the day of rising with white marks on their
foreheads, hands and feet from wudu, and I will precede them to the
Hawd. Some men will be driven away from the Hawd as if they were
straying camels and I shall call out to them, 'Will you not come? Will
you not come? Will you not come?' and someone will say, 'They changed
things after you,' so I shall say, 'Then away with them, away with
them, away with them!'"
Yahya related to me from Malik from Hisham ibn Urwa from his father
from Humran, the mawla of Uthman ibn Affan, that Uthman ibn Affan was
once sitting on the Maqaid (the benches surrounding the Madina Mosque,
or else a stone near Uthman ibn Affan's house where he sat to discuss
with people), when the muadhdhin came and told him that it was time for
the asr prayer. He called for water and did wudu. Then he said, "By
Allah, I shall tell you something which I would not tell you if it were
not in the Book of Allah. I heard the Messenger of Allah, may Allah
bless him and grant him peace, say, 'If a man does wudu, and makes sure
he does it correctly, and then does the prayer, he will be forgiven
everything that he does between then and the time when he prays the
next prayer.'"
Yahya said that Malik said, "I believe he meant this ayat - 'Establish
prayer at the two ends of the day and in some watches of the night.
Good actions take away wrong actions. That is a reminder for those who
remember.'" (Sura 11 ayat 114).
-----------------------------
Section : On Wudu in General.
Yahya related to me from Malik from Zayd ibn Aslam from Ata ibn Yasar
from Abdullah as-Sanabihi that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless
him and grant him peace, said, "A trusting slave does wudu and as he
rinses his mouth the wrong actions leave it. As he cleans his nose the
wrong actions leave it. As he washes his face, the wrong actions leave
it, even from underneath his eyelashes. As he washes his hands the
wrong actions leave them, even from underneath his fingernails. As he
wipes his head the wrong actions leave it, even from his ears. And as
he washes his feet the wrong actions leave them, even from underneath
the toenails of both his feet." He added, "Then his walking to the
mosque and his prayer are an extra reward for him."
Yahya related to me from Malik from Suhayl ibn Abi Salih from his
father from Abu Hurayra that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless
him and grant him peace, said, "A muslim slave (or a trusting slave)
does wudu and as he washes his face every wrong action he has seen with
his eyes leaves with the water (or the last drop of water). As he
washes his hands every wrong action he has done with his hands leaves
with the water (or the last drop of water). And as he washes his feet
every wrong action his feet have walked to leaves with the water (or
the last drop of water) so that he comes away purified of wrong
actions."
Yahya related to me from Malik from Ishaq ibn Abdullah ibn Abi Talha
that Anas ibn Malik said, "I saw the Messenger of Allah, may Allah
bless him and grant him peace, on one occasion when the asr prayer was
at hand. Everyone was looking for water for wudu but no-one could find
any. Then the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him
peace, brought some water in a vessel. He put his hand into the vessel
and then he told them all to do wudu from it." Anas added, "I saw water
coming out from his fingers. Then all of them to the last man did wudu."
Yahya related to me from Malik from Nuaym ibn Abdullah al-Madani al-
Mujmir that he heard Abu Hurayra say, "If someone does wudu and does it
correctly and then goes off intending to do the prayer, then he is in
prayer as long as he intends to do the prayer. A good action is written
for every alternate step he makes and a wrong action is erased for the
second. When you hear the iqama do not lengthen your stride, and the
one who has the greatest reward is the one whose house is farthest
60
Yahya related to me from Malik from Yahya ibn Said that he heard
someone ask Said ibn al-Musayyab about washing off excreta with water.
Said said, "That is the way women wash."
Yahya related to me from Malik from Abu'z-Zinad from al-Araj from Abu
Hurayra that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him
peace, said, "If a dog drinks from your vessel, wash it seven times."
Yahya related to me from Malik that he had heard that the Messenger of
Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, "Try to go
straight, although you will not be able to do so. Act, and the best of
your actions is the prayer. And only a mumin is constant in his wudu."
Yahya related to me from Malik from Nafi that Abdullah ibn Umar used
two fingers to take water to his ears.
Yahya related to me from Malik that he had heard that Jabir ibn
Abdullah al-Ansari was asked about wiping over a turban. He said, "Not
unless you have wiped over your hair with water."
Yahya related to me from Malik from Hisham ibn Urwa that Abu Urwa ibn
az-Zubayr used to take off his turban and wipe his head with water.
61
Yahya related to me from Malik from Nafi that she saw Safiyya bint Abi
Ubayd, the wife of Abdullah ibn 'Umar, take off her head-covering and
wipe her head with water. Nafi was a child at the time.
Malik was asked about a man who did wudu but forgot to wipe his head
until the water had dried. He said, "I consider that he should wipe his
head and then repeat the prayer if he has already performed it."
Malik was asked about a man who did wudu but forgot to wipe his head
until the water had dried. He said, "I consider that he should wipe his
head and then repeat the prayer if he has already performed it."
Yahya related to me from Malik from Ibn Shihab from Abbad ibn Ziyad, a
descendant of al-Mughira ibn Shuba from his father from al Mughira ibn
Shuba that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him
peace, went to relieve himself during the expedition of Tabuk. Mughira
said, "I went with him, taking water. Then the Messenger of Allah, may
Allah bless him and grant him peace, came back and I poured out the
water for him. He washed his hands and then went to push his hands out
of the sleeves of his garment, but could not do so because of their
narrowness. So he brought them out from underneath his garment. Then he
washed his arms, wiped his head and wiped over his leather socks. The
Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, returned
and Abdar Rahman ibn Awf was leading the people in prayer, and he had
already finished one raka with them. The Messenger of Allah, may Allah
bless him and grant him peace, prayed the remaining raka with them to
everyone's concern. When the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him
and grant him peace, finished he said, 'You have acted correctly.'"
Yahya related to me from Malik that Nafi and Abdullah ibn Dinar told
him that Abdullah ibn Umar arrived at Kufa and went to Sad ibn Abi
Waqqas, who was the Amir of Kufa at that time. Abdullah ibn Umar saw
him wiping over his leather socks and disapproved of it. So Sad said to
him, "Ask your father when you get back." Abdullah returned but forgot
to ask Umar about the matter until Sad arrived and said, "Have you
asked your father?" and he said, "No."
Abdullah then asked Umar and Umar replied, "If your feet are ritually
pure when you put them in the leather socks then you can wipe over the
socks." Abdullah said,"What about if we have just come from relieving
62
ourselves?" Umar said, "Yes, even if you have just come from relieving
yourself."
Yahya related to me from Malik from Nafi that Abdullah ibn Umar
urinated in the market place and then did wudu, washing his face and
hands and wiping his head. Then as soon as he had come into the mosque,
he was called to pray over a dead person, so he wiped over his leather
socks and prayed.
Yahya related to me from Malik that Said ibn Abd ar-Rahman ibn Ruqash
said, "I saw Anas ibn Malik come and squat and urinate. Then water was
brought and he did wudu. He washed his face, then his arms to the
elbows, and then he wiped his head and wiped over his leather socks.
Then he came to the mosque and prayed."
Yahya said that Malik was asked whether a man who did wudu for prayer
and then put on his leather socks, and then urinated and took them off
and put them back on again, should begin wudu afresh.
Malik replied, "He should take off his socks and wash his feet. Only
someone who puts on leather socks when his feet are (already) ritually
purified by wudu can wipe over them. Someone who puts on leather socks
when his feet are not ritually purified by wudu, should not wipe over
them."
Yahya said that Malik was asked about a man who did wudu with his
leather socks on and forgot to wipe over them until the water was dry
and he had prayed, and he said, "He should wipe over his socks and
repeat the prayer but not repeat wudu."
Malik was asked about a man who washed his feet and put on his leather
socks and then started doing wudu, and he said, "He should take off his
socks and do wudu and wash his feet."
Yahya related to me from Malik from Hisham ibn Urwa that he saw his
father wiping over his leather socks. He said, "When he wiped over his
socks he would never do more than wipe the tops and he would not wipe
the bottoms."
Yahya related to me that Malik had asked ibn Shihab how to wipe over
leather socks. Ibn Shihab had put one hand under the sock and his other
hand above the sock and then passed them over it.
Yahya said that Malik said, "Out of all that I have heard about the
matter I like what ibn Shihab said the most."
Yahya related to me from Malik from Nafi that Abdullah ibn Umar would
leave and do wudu if he had a nose-bleed and then return and complete
his prayer without saying anything.
Yahya related to me from Malik from Nafi that Abdullah ibn Abbas used
to have nose-bleeds and would leave to wash off the blood. He would
then return and complete his prayer.
Yahya related to me from Malik from Yazid ibn Abdullah Qusayt al-Laythi
that he saw Said ibn al-Musayyab having a nose-bleed while praying. He
went off to the room of Umm Salama, the wife of the Prophet, may Allah
bless him and grant him peace, and water was brought to him and he did
wudu. He then returned and completed his prayer.
Yahya related to me that Abd ar-Rahman ibn Harmala al-Aslami said, "I
saw Said ibn al-Musayyab with his nose bleeding and blood poured out of
it so that his fingers were all red from the blood coming out of his
nose, and he prayed without doing wudu."
Yahya related to me from Malik from Abd ar Rahman ibn al-Mujabbar that
he saw Salim ibn Abdullah with blood running from his nose so that his
fingers were all coloured red. Then he rubbed it and prayed without
doing wudu.
64
Yahya related to me from Hisham ibn Urwa from his father that al-Miswar
ibn Makhrama told him that he had visited Umar ibn al Khattab on the
night he was stabbed and had woken him up for the subh prayer and Umar
had said, ''Yes. Whoever stops doing the prayer will get nothing from
Islam," and he did the prayer with blood pouring from his wound.
Yahya related to me from Malik from Yahya ibn Said that Said ibn al-
Musayyab was asked, "What do you say about someone who is afflicted by
a nose-bleed which does not stop? "Malik said that Yahya ibn Said said
that Said ibn al Musayyab said, "I say that he should signal with his
head." (i.e. instead of doing sajda or ruku.)
Yahya said that Malik said, "That is what I like most out of what I
have heard about the matter."
Yahya related to me from Malik from Abu'n Nadr, the mawla of Abdullah
ibn Ubaydullah, from Sulayman ibn Yasar from al-Miqdad ibn al-Aswad
that Ali ibn Abi Talib told him to ask the Messenger of Allah, may
Allah bless him and grant him peace, what a man should do, who, when
close to his wife, had a flow of prostatic fluid. Ali explained that
the daughter of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant
him peace, was living with him then and he was too shy to ask for
himself. Al-Miqdad said, "I asked the Messenger of Allah, may Allah
bless him and grant him peace, about it, and he said, 'When you find
that, wash your genitals with water and do wudu as for prayer.'"
Yahya related to me from Zayd ibn Aslam from his father that Umar ibn
al-Khattab said, "I find it dropping from me like small beads. When you
find that, wash your penis and do wudu as for prayer."
Yahya related to me from Malik from Zayd ibn Aslam from his father that
Jundub, the mawla of Abdullah ibn Ayyash, said, "I asked Abdullah ibn
Umar about prostatic fluid and he said, 'When you find it, wash your
genitals and do wudu as for prayer.'"
Yahya related to me from Malik from Yahya ibn Said that he was
listening to Said ibn al-Musayyab and a man questioned him saying, "I
discover a liquid when I am praying. Should I leave?"
Yahya related to me from Malik that as-Salt ibn Zuyayd said, "I asked
Sulayman ibn Yasar about a liquid I discovered. He said, 'Wash what is
under your garments with water and forget about it.'"
Yahya related to me from Malik that Abdullah ibn Abi Bakr ibn Muhammad
ibn Amr ibn Hazim heard Urwa ibn az-Zubayr saying, "I went to see
Marwan ibn al-Hakam and we talked about what you had to do wudu for,
and Marwan said, 'You have to do wudu if you touch your penis.' Urwa
said, 'I didn't know that.' Marwan ibn al-Hakam said that Busra bint
Safwan had told him that she heard the Messenger of Allah, may Allah
bless him and grant him peace, say, 'If any of you touches his penis he
should do wudu.'"
Yahya related to me from Malik from Ismail ibn Muhammad ibn Sad ibn Abi
Waqqas that Musab ibn Sad ibn Abi Waqqas said, "I was holding the Book
for Sad ibn Abi Waqqas and I rubbed myself. Sad said, 'Did you touch
your penis?' I replied, 'Yes,' and he said, 'Get up and do wudu.' So I
got up and did wudu and then returned."
Yahya related to me from Malik from Nafi that Abdullah ibn Umar used to
say, "If you touch your penis you have to do wudu."
Yahya related to me from Malik from Hisham ibn Urwa that his father
used to say, "If any of you touches his penis he has to do wudu."
Yahya related from Malik from Ibn Shihab that Salim ibn Abdullah said,
"I saw my father Abdullah ibn Umar, do ghusl and then do wudu. I said
to him, 'Father, isn't ghusl enough for you?' He said, 'Of course, but
sometimes I touch my penis, so I do wudu.'"
Yahya related to me from Malik from Nafi that Salim ibn 'Abdullah said,
"I was with Abdullah ibn Umar on a journey and after the sun had risen
I saw him do wudu and then pray. So I said to him, 'This isn't a prayer
that you normally do. 'He said, 'After I had done wudu for the subh
prayer, I touched my genitals. Then I forgot to do wudu. So I did wudu
again and repeated my prayer.'"
Yahya related to me from Malik from Ibn Shihab from Salim ibn Abdullah
that his father Abdullah ibn Umar used to say, "A man's kissing his
wife and fondling her with his hands are part of intercourse. Someone
who kisses his wife or fondles her with his hand must do wudu."
Yahya related to me from Malik that he had heard that Abdullah ibn
Masud used to say, "Wudu is necessary if a man kisses his wife."
Yahya related to me from Malik that Ibn Shihab used to say, "Wudu is
necessary if a man kisses his wife." Nafi said that Malik said, "That
is what I like most out of what I have heard."
Yahya related to me from Malik from Hisham ibn Urwa from his father
from A'isha, umm al-muminin, that whenever the Messenger of Allah, may
Allah bless him and grant him peace, did ghusl for major ritual
impurity, he would begin by washing his hands, and then do wudu as for
prayer. He would then put his fingers in the water and rub the roots of
his hair with them. Then he would pour as much water as two hands can
hold on to his head three times, and over the entire surface of his
skin.
Yahya related to me from Malik from Ibn Shihab from Urwa ibn az-Zubayr
from A'isha, umm al-muminin, that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah
bless him and grant him peace, used to do ghusl for major ritual
impurity from a vessel which contained a faraq.
Yahya related to me from Malik from Nafi that when Abdullah ibn Umar
used to do ghusl for major ritual impurity he would begin by pouring
water on his right hand and washing it. Then, in order, he would wash
his genitals, rinse his mouth, snuff water in and out of his nose, wash
his face and splash his eyes with water. Then he would wash his right
arm and then his left, and after that he would wash his head. He would
finish by having a complete wash and pouring water all over himself.
Yahya related to me from Malik that he had heard that A'isha was asked
about how a woman should do ghusl for major ritual impurity. She said,
"She should scoop water over her head with both hands three times and
rub the roots of her hair with her hands."
Yahya related to me from Malik from Ibn Shihab from Said ibn al-
Musayyab that Umar ibn al-Khattab and Uthman ibn Affan and A'isha, the
wife of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, used to
say, "When the circumcised part touches the circumcised part, ghusl is
obligatory."
Yahya related to me from Malik from Abu'n Nadr, the mawla of Umar ibn
Abdullah that Abu Salamaibn Abdar-Rahman ibn Awf related that he had
asked A'isha, the wife of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant
him peace, what made ghusl obligatory. She said, "Do you know what you
are like, Abu Salama? You are like a chick when it hears the cocks
crowing and so crows with them. When the circumcised part passes the
circumcised part, ghusl is obligatory."
Yahya related to me from Malik from Yahya ibn Said from Said ibn al-
Musayyab that Abu Musa al-Ashari came to A'isha, the wife of the
Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and said to her, "The
disagreement of the companions in a matter which I hate to bring before
you has distressed me." She said, "What is that? You did not ask your
mother about it, so ask me." He said, "A man penetrates his wife, but
becomes listless and does not ejaculate. "She said, "When the
circumcised part passes the circumcised part ghusl is obligatory." Abu
Musa added, "I shall never ask anyone about this after you."
Yahya related to me from Malik from Yahya ibn Said from Abdullah ibn
Kab, the mawla of Uthman ibn Affan that Mahmud ibn Labid al-Ansari
asked Zayd ibn Thabit about a man who penetrated his wife but became
listless and did not ejaculate. Zayd ibn Thabit said, "He does ghusl."
Mahmud said to him, "Ubayy ibn Kab used not to think that ghusl was
necessary," but Zayd ibn Thabit said, "Ubayy ibn Kab drew away from
that before he died."
Yahya related to me from Malik from Nafi that Abdullah ibn Umar used to
say, "When the circumcised part passes the circumcised part, ghusl is
obligatory."
69
Yahya related to me from Malik from Abdullah ibn Dinar that Abdullah
ibn Umar related that Umar ibn al-Khattab mentioned to the Messenger of
Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, that he would sometimes
become junub in the night. The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him
and grant him peace, said to him, "Do wudu and wash your penis, and
then sleep."
Yahya related to me from Malik from Hisham ibn Urwa from his father
that A'isha, the wife of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him
peace, used to say, "If you have intercourse with your wife and then
wish to go to sleep before doing ghusl, do not sleep until you have
done wudu as for prayer."
Yahya related to me from Malik from Nafi that Abdullah ibn Umar, if he
wished to sleep or eat while junub, would wash his face, and his arms
to the elbows, and wipe his head. Then he would eat or sleep.
Yahya related to me from Malik from Ismail ibn Abi Hakim that Ata ibn
Yasar told him that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and
grant him peace, said the takbir in one of the prayers and then
indicated to them with his hand to stay in place. He left and then
returned with traces of water on his skin.
Yahya related to me from Malik from Hisham ibn Urwa that Zuyayd ibn as-
Salt said, "I went with Umar ibn al-Khattab to Juruf and he looked down
and noticed that he had had a wet dream and had prayed without doing
ghusl. He exclaimed, 'By Allah I realise that I have had a wet dream
and did not know it and have not done ghusl.' So he did ghusl and
washed off whatever he saw on his garment, and sprinkled with water
70
whatever he did not see. Then he gave the adhan or the iqama and prayed
in the midmorning."
Yahya related to me from Malik from Ismail ibn Abi Hakim from Sulayman
ibn Yasar that Umar ibn al-Khattab went out early in the morning to his
land in al-Juruf and found semen on his garment. He said, "I have been
tried with wet dreams since I have been entrusted with governing the
people." He did ghusl and washed his garment of what he saw of the
semen, and then prayed after the sun had risen.
Yahya related to me from Malik from Yahya ibn Said from Sulayman ibn
Yasar that Umar ibn al-Khattab led the people in the subh prayer and
then went out to his land in Juruf and found semen on his clothes. He
said, "Since we have been eating rich meat our veins have become
fulsome." He did ghusl, washed the semen from his clothing, and did his
prayer again.
Yahya related to me from Malik from Hisham ibn Urwa from his father
from Yahyaibn Abd ar-Rahman ibn Haib that he had set off for Mumra with
Umar ibn al-Khattab in a party of riders, among whom was Amr ibn al-As.
Umar ibn al-Khattab dismounted for a rest late at night on a certain
road near a certain oasis. Umar had a wet dream when it was almost dawn
and there was no water among the riding party. He rode until he came to
some water and then he began to wash off what he saw of the semen until
it had gone. Amr ibn al-As said to him, "It is morning and there are
clothes with us, so allow your garment to be washed. ''Umar ibn al-
Khattab said to him, "I am surprised at you, Amr ibn al-As! Even if you
could find clothes, would everybody be able to find them? By Allah, if
I were to do it, it would become a sunna. No, I wash what I see, and I
sprinkle with water what I do not see."
Malik spoke about a man who found traces of a wet dream on his clothes
and did not know when it had occurred and did not remember anything he
had seen in his sleep. He said, "Let the intention of his ghusl be from
the time when he last slept, and if he has prayed since that last sleep
he should repeat it. This is because often a man has a wet dream and
71
sees nothing, and often he sees something but does not have an
emission. But, if he finds liquid on his garment he must do ghusl. This
is because Umar repeated what he had prayed after the time he had last
slept and not what was before it."
Yahya related to me from Malik from Ibn Shihab from Urwa ibn az-Zubayr
that Umm Sulayman said to the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him
and grant him peace, "Should a woman do ghusl when she experiences the
same as a man in her sleep?" The Messenger of Allah said to her, "Yes,
she should do ghusl. "A'isha said to her, "Shame on you! Does a woman
see that?" (i.e. a liquid.) The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him
and grant him peace, said to her, "May your right hand be full of dust.
From where does family resemblance come?"
Yahya related to me from Malik from Hisham ibn Urwa from his father
from Zaynab bint Abi Salama that Umm Salama, the wife of the Prophet,
may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, "Umm Salama, the wife of
Abu Talha al-Ansari, came to the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless
him and grant him peace, and said, 'Messenger of Allah! Allah is not
ashamed of the truth-does a woman have to do ghusl if she has had an
erotic dream?' He said, 'Yes, if she sees any liquid.'"
Yahya related to me from Malik from Nafi that Abdullah ibn Umar used to
say, "There is no harm in doing ghusl with water that has been used by
one's wife as long as she is not menstruating or in a state of major
ritual impurity (junub)."
Yahya related to me from Malik from Nafi that Abdullah ibn Umar used to
sweat in a garment while he was junub and then pray with it on.
Yahya related to me from Malik from Nafi that the slave girls of
Abdullah ibn Umar used to wash his feet and bring him a mat of palm
leaves while they were menstruating.
Malik was asked whether a man who had women and slave-girls could have
intercourse with all of them before he did ghusl. He said, "There is no
harm in a man having intercourse with two of his slave girls before he
does ghusl. It is disapproved of, however, to go to a freewoman on
another's day. There is no harm in making love first to one slave girl
and then to another when one is junub."
Malik was asked about a man who was junub and water was put down for
him to do ghusl with. Then he forgot and put his finger into it to find
out whether it was hot or cold. Malik said, "If no filth has soiled his
fingers, I do not consider that that makes the water impure."
Yahya related to me from Malik from Abd arRahman ibn al-Qasim from his
father that A'isha umm al-muminin said, "We went out on a journey with
the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and,
when we came to Bayda' or Dhat al-Jaysh, a necklace of mine broke. The
Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, stopped to
look for it and the people stopped with him. There was no water nearby
and the people were not carrying any with them, so they came to Abu
Bakr as-Siddiq and said, 'Don't you see what A'isha has done? She has
made the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace,
and the people stop when there is no water nearby and they are not
carrying any with them.'"
A'isha continued, "Abu Bakr came and the Messenger of Allah, may Allah
bless him and grant him peace, had fallen asleep with his head on my
thigh. Abu Bakr said, 'You have made the Messenger of Allah, may Allah
bless him and grant him peace, and the people stop when there is no
water nearby and they are not carrying any with them'"
She continued, "Abu Bakr remonstrated with me and said whatever Allah
willed him to say, and began to poke me in the waist. The only thing
that stopped me from moving was that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah
bless him and grant him peace, had his head on my thigh. The Messenger
of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, slept until morning
found him with no water. Allah, the Blessed and Exalted, sent down the
ayat of tayammum and so they did tayammum. Usayd ibn Hudayr said, 'This
is not the first baraka from you, O family of Abu Bakr.'"
A'isha added, "We roused the camel I had been on and found the necklace
under it."
Malik was asked whether a man who did tayammum for one prayer should do
tayammum when the time of the next prayer came or whether the first
tayammum was enough. He said, "No, he does tayammum for every prayer,
because he has to look for water for every prayer. If he looks for it
and does not find it then he does tayammum."
73
Malik was asked whether a man who did tayammum could lead others in
prayer if they were in wudu. He said, "I prefer that someone else
should lead them. However, I see no harm in it if he does lead them in
prayer."
Yahya said that Malik said that a man who did tayammum because he could
not find any water, and then stood and said the takbir and entered into
the prayer, and then someone came with some water, did not stop his
prayer but completed it with tayammum and did wudu for future prayers.
Yahya said that Malik said, "Whoever rises for prayer and does not find
water and so does what Allah has ordered him to do of tayammum has
obeyed Allah. Someone who does find water is neither purer than him nor
more perfect in prayer, because both have been commanded and each does
as Allah has commanded. What Allah has commanded as far as wudu is
concerned is for the one who finds water, and tayammum is for the one
who does not find water before he enters into the prayer."
Malik said that a man who was in a state of major ritual impurity could
do tayammum and read his portion of Qur'an and do voluntary prayers as
long as he did not find any water. This applied only to circumstances
in which it was allowable to pray with tayammum.
Yahya related to me from Malik from Nafi that Abdullah ibn Umar and he
were approaching Juruf. When they got to Mirbad, Abdullah got down and
did tayammum with some good earth. He wiped his face, and his arms to
the elbows, and then prayed.
Yahya related to me from Malik from Nafi that Abdullah ibn Umar used to
do tayammum up to his elbows.
Malik was asked about how tayammum was done and what parts were covered
and he said, "Strike the ground once for the face and once for the arms
and wipe them to the elbows."
Yahya related to me from Malik from Abd arRahman ibn Harmala that a man
asked Said ibn al-Musayyab about what a man who was junub and had done
tayammum should do when he came across water. Said said, "When he comes
across water he must do ghusl for what comes after."
Malik said about some one who had a wet dream while he was on a journey
and there was only enough water for wudu and he was not thirsty and so
74
he did not need to use it for that, "Let him wash his genitals, and
whatever the semen has fallen on, with the water and then he does
tayammum with good earth as Allah has ordered him."
Malik was asked whether a man who was junub and wished to do tayammum
but could only find salty earth could do tayammum with that earth, and
whether it was disapproved of to pray on salty earth. He said, "There
is no harm in praying on salty earth or in using it to do tayammum,
because Allah the Blessed and Exalted has said, '...and do tayammum
with good earth.' One is purified by tayammum with everything that is
earth, whether it is salty or otherwise."
Yahya related to me from Malik from Zayd ibn Aslam that a man
questioned the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him
peace, saying, "What is permitted me from my wife when she is
menstruating?" The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant
him peace, said, "Let her wrap her waist-wrapper round herself tightly,
and then what is above that is your concern."
Yahya related to me from Malik from Rabia ibn Abi Abd ar-Rahman that on
one occasion A'isha, the wife of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and
grant him peace, was sleeping with the Messenger of Allah, may Allah
bless him and grant him peace, in one garment, when suddenly she jumped
up sharply. The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him
peace, said to her, "What's the matter with you? Are you losing
blood?", meaning menstruating. She said, "Yes." He said, "Wrap your
waist-wrapper tightly about you, and return to your sleeping-place."
Yahya related to me from Malik from Nafi that Ubaydullah ibn Abdullah
ibn Umar sent a question to A'isha asking her, "May a man fondle his
wife when she is menstruating?" She replied, "Let her wrap her waist-
wrapper around her lower part and then he may fondle her if he wishes."
Yahya related to me from Malik that he had heard that Salim ibn
Abdullah and Sulayman ibn Yasar were asked whether the husband of a
menstruating woman could have sexual intercourse with her when she saw
that she was pure but before she had had a ghusl. They said, "No, not
until she has had a ghusl."
Yahya related to me from Malik from AIqama ibn Abi AIqama that his
mother, the mawla of A'isha, umm al-muminin, said, "Women used to send
little boxes to A'isha, umm al-muminin, with a piece of cotton cloth in
each one on which was yellowness from menstrual blood, asking her about
the prayer. She said to them, 'Do not be hasty until you see a white
discharge." By that she meant purity from menses.
Yahya related to me from Malik from Abdullah ibn Abi Bakr from his
paternal aunt from the daughter of Zayd ibn Thabit that she had heard
that women used to ask for lamps in the middle of the night to check
their purity. She would criticise them for this saying, "Women never
used to do this," i.e. in the time of the companions.
Malik was asked whether a woman whose period had finished could do
tayammum to purify herself if she could not find water and he said,
"Yes, because she is like some one in a state of major ritual impurity,
who, if he cannot find water, does tayammum."
Yahya related to me from Malik that he had heard that A'isha, the wife
of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said that a
pregnant woman who noticed bleeding left off from prayer.
Yahya said that Malik said, "That is what is done in our community."
Yahya related to me from Malik from Hisham ibn Urwa from his father
that A'isha, the wife of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him
peace, said, "I used to comb the head of the Messenger of Allah, may
Allah bless him and grant him peace, while I was menstruating."
Yahya related to me from Malik from Hisham ibn Urwa from his father
from Fatima bint al-Mundhir ibn az-Zubayr that Asma bint Abu Bakr as-
Siddiq said, "A woman questioned the Messenger of Allah, may Allah
bless him and grant him peace, saying, 'If menstrual blood gets onto
our clothes how do you think we should deal with it?' The Messenger of
Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, 'If menstrual
blood gets onto your clothes you should wash them, and sprinkle them
with water before you pray in them.'"
Yahya related to me from Malik from Hisham ibn Urwa from his father
that A'isha, the wife of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him
peace, said, "Fatima bint Abu Hubaysh said, 'Messenger of Allah, I
never become pure - am I permitted to pray?' The Messenger of Allah,
may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, 'That is a vein, not
menstruation. So when your period approaches, leave off from the
prayer, and when its grip leaves, wash the blood from yourself and
pray.'"
Yahya related to me from Malik from Nafi from Sulayman ibn Yasar from
Umm Salama, the wife of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him
peace, that a certain woman in the time of the Messenger of Allah, may
Allah bless him and grant him peace, used to bleed profusely, so Umm
Salama consulted the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant
him peace, for her, and he said, "She should calculate the number of
nights and days a month that she used to menstruate before it started
happening, and she should leave off from prayer for that much of the
month. When she has completed that she should do ghusl, bind her
private parts with a cloth, and then pray."
77
Yahya related to me from Malik from Hisham ibn Urwa from his father
from Zaynab bint Abu Salama that she saw Zaynab bint Jahsh, the wife of
Abd ar-Rahman ibn Awf, and she used to bleed as if menstruating. She
would do ghusl and pray.
Yahya related to me from Malik from Sumayy, the mawla of Abu Bakr ibn
Abd ar-Rahman that al-Qaqa ibn Hakim and Zayd ibn Aslam sent him to
Said ibn al-Musayyab to ask how a woman who was bleeding as if
menstruating should do ghusl. Said said, "She does a ghusl to cover
from the end of one period to the end of the next, and does wudu for
every prayer, and if bleeding overtakes her she should bind her private
parts."
Yahya related to me from Malik from Hisham ibn Urwa that his father
said, "A woman who bleeds as if menstruating only has to do one ghusl,
and then after that she does wudu for each prayer."
Yahya said that Malik said, "The position with us is that when a woman
who bleeds as if menstruating starts to do the prayer again, her
husband can have sexual intercourse with her. Similarly, if a woman who
has given birth sees blood after she has reached the fullest extent
that bleeding normally restrains women, her husband can have sexual
intercourse with her and she is in the same position as a woman who
bleeds as if menstruating."
Yahya said that Malik said, "The position with us concerning a woman
who bleeds as if menstruating is founded on the hadith of Hisham ibn
Urwa from his father, and it is what I prefer the most of what I have
heard about the matter."
Yahya related to me from Malik from Hisham ibn Urwa from his father
that A'isha, the wife of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him
peace, said, "An infant boy was brought to the Messenger of Allah, may
Allah bless him and grant him peace, and it urinated on him. The
Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, called for
some water and rubbed over the urine with it."
78
Yahya related to me from Malik from Ibn Shihab from Ubaydullah ibn
Abdullah ibn Utba ibn Masud from Umm Qays ibn Mihsan that she brought a
baby boy of hers who was not yet eating food to the Messenger of Allah,
may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and he sat it in his arms and
it urinated on his garment, so the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless
him and grant him peace, called for some water and sprinkled over it
but did not wash it.
Yahya related to me from Malik that Yahya ibn Said said, "A Bedouin
came into the mosque and uncovered his private parts to urinate. The
people called out to him and began to raise their voices but the
Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said,'Let
him be. 'So they let him be and he urinated. Then the Messenger of
Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, ordered a bucketful of
water to be brought and it was poured on the place."
Yahya related to me from Malik that Abdullah ibn Dinar said, "I saw
Abdullah ibn Umar urinating while standing."
Yahya said that Malik was asked if any hadith had come down about
washing the private parts of urine and faeces and he said, "I have
heard that some of those who have passed away used to wash themselves
of faeces. I like to wash my private parts of urine."
Yahya related to me from Malik from Ibn Shihab from Ibn as-Sabbaq that
the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said
in a jumua, "Muslims! Allah has made this day a festival day (id) so do
ghusl, and it will not harm whoever has perfume to apply some of it,
and use a tooth-stick."
Yahya related to me from Malik from Abu'z Zinad from al-Araj from Abu
Hurayra that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him
79
Yahya related to me from Malik from Ibn Shihab from Humayd ibn Abdar-
Rahman ibn Awf that Abu Hurayra said, "Were it not that he would be
overburdening his community he (the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless
him and grant him peace,) would have ordered them to use a tooth-stick
with each wudu."
Narated By Jabir ibn Abdullah : When the Prophet (pbuh) felt the need
of relieving himself, he went far off where no one could see him.
Narated By Anas b. Malik : When the Apostle of Allah (pbuh) entered the
toilet, he used to say (before entering) : "O Allah, I seek refuge in
thee."
80
Explaining the variance of the version Abu Dawud says : Shu'bah on the
authority of 'Abd al-'Aziz narrated: "O Allah, I seek refuge in Thee,"
and sometimes he reported: "I take refuge in Allah." Wuhaib (b. Khalid)
(on the authority of 'Abd al-'Aziz) narrated: One should take refuge in
Allah.
Narated By Zayd ibn Arqam : The Apostle of Allah (pbuh) said: These
privies are frequented by the jinns and devils. So when anyone amongst
you goes there, he should say: "I seek refuge in Allah from male and
female devils."
Narated By Abu Hurairah : The Apostle of Allah (pbuh) said: "I am like
a father to you. When any of you goes to the privy, he should not face
or turn his back towards the qiblah. He should not cleanse with his
right hand.
Narated By Abu Ayyub : The Holy Prophet (pbuh) said: "When you go to
the privy, neither turn your face nor your back towards the qibla at
the time of excretion or urination, but turn towards the east or the
west. (Abu Ayyub) said: When we came to syria, we found that the
81
toilets already built were facing the qiblah. We turned our faces away
from them and begged pardon of Allah.
Narated By Abdullah ibn Umar : Marwan al-Asfar said: I saw Ibn Umar
make his camel kneel down facing the qiblah, then he sat down urinating
in its direction. So I said: AbuAbdurRahman, has this not been
forbidden? He replied: Why not, that was forbidden only in open
country; but when there is something between you and the qiblah that
conceals you , then there is no harm.
Narated By 'Abd Allah b. 'Umar : I ascended the roof of the house and
saw the Apostle of Allah (pbuh) sitting on two bricks facing Jerusalem
(Bait al-Maqdis) for relieving himself.
Narated By Ibn 'Umar : A man passed by the Prophet (pbuh) while he was
urinating, and saluted him. The Prophet (pbuh) did not return the
salutation to him.
Narated By Anas ibn Malik : When the Prophet (pbuh) entered the privy,
he removed his ring.
Another version of Hammad has: "One of them did not cover himself while
urinating." The version does not have the words: "He did not safeguard
himself from urine."
83
Narated By N/A : Ibn 'Abbas also reported a tradition from the Prophet
(pbuh) conveying the simmilar meaning.
The version of Jarir has the wording: "he did not cover himself while
urinating."
The version of Abu Mu'awiyah has the wording: "he did not safeguard
himself (from urine)."
Narated By Amr ibn al-'As : Abdur Rahman ibn Hasanah reported: I and
Amr ibn al-'As went to the Prophet (pbuh). He came out with a leather
shield (in his hand). He covered himself with it and urinated. Then we
said: Look at him. He is urinating as a woman does. The Prophet (pbuh),
heard this and said: Do you not know what befell a person from amongst
Banu Isra'il (the children of Israel)? When urine fell on them, they
would cut off the place where the urine fell; but he (that person)
forbade them (to do so), and was punished in his grave.
Abu Dawud said: Musaddad, a narator, reported: I went far away from
him. He then called me and I reached just near his heals.
Easing in thoroughfares (where people walk) or under the shade (of the
trees) (where they take shelter and rest).
The version of Ahmad has: Then performs ablution there, for evil
thoughts come from it.
Narated By 'Aisha, Ummul Mu'minin : When the Prophet (pbuh) came out of
the privy, he used to say: "Grant me Thy forgiveness."
Chapter : Disapproval of touching the penis with the right hand while
purifying.
Narated By Abu Qatadah : The Prophet (pbuh) said: when anyone of you
urinates, he must not touch his penis with his right hand, and when he
goes out to relieve himself he must not wipe himself with his right
hand (in the privy) and when he drink, he must not drink in one breath.
Narated By Hafsah, Ummul Mu'minin : The Prophet (pbuh) used his right
hand for taking his food and drink and used his left hand for other
purposes.
Narated By 'Aisha, Ummul Mu'minin : The Prophet (pbuh) used his right
hand for getting water for ablution and taking food, and his left hand
for his evacuation and for anything repugnant.
Ruwayfi' said: Any one of us would borrow a camel during the lifetime
of the Prophet (pbuh) from the other, on condition that he would give
him half the booty, and the other half he would retain himself.
He then reported: The Apostle of Allah (pbuh) said: You may live for a
long time after I am gone, Ruwayfi', so, tell people that if anyone
ties his beard or wears round his neck a string to ward off the evil
eye, or cleanses himself with animal dung or bone, Muhammad has nothing
to do with him.
Narated By N/A : This tradition has also been narrated by Abu Salim al-
J'Aishani on the authority of 'Abd Allah b. Amr. He narrated this
tradition at the time when he besieged the fort at the gate of Alyun.
Abu Dawud said: The fort of Alyun lies at the mountain in Fustat. Abu
Dawud said: The kunyah (surname) of Shaiban b. Ummayyah is Abu
Hudhaifah.
Narated By Khuzaymah ibn Thabit : The Prophet (pbuh) was asked about
cleansing (after relieving oneself). He said: (One should cleanse
oneself) with three stones which should be free from dung.
Narated By Abu Hurayrah : The Prophet (pbuh) said: The following verse
was revealed in connection with the people of Quba': "In it are men who
love to be purified" (ix.108). He (AbuHurayrah) said: They used to
cleanse themselves with water after easing. So the verse was revealed
in connection with them.
Narated By Abu Hurayrah : When the Prophet (pbuh) went to the privy, I
took to him some water in a small vessel or a skin, and he cleansed
himself. He then wiped his hand on the ground. I then took to him
another vessel for ablution.
88
Narated By Abu Hurairah : The Prophet (pbuh) said: Were it not that I
might overburden the believers, I would order them to delay the night
('isha) prayer and use the tooth-stick at the time of every prayer.
Narated By Abdullah ibn Hanzalah ibn AbuAmir : Muhammad ibn Yahya ibn
Habban asked Abdullah ibn Abdullah ibn Umar about the reason for Ibn
Umar's performing ablution for every prayer, whether he was with or
without ablution.
When it became a burden for him, he was ordered to use tooth-stick for
every prayer. As Ibn Umar thought that he had the strength (to perform
the ablution for every prayer), he did not give up performing ablution
for every prayer.
Narated By Abu Burdah on the authority of his father Abu Musa al-Ashari
according to the version of Musaddad : We came to the Apostle of Allah
(pbuh) to provide us with a mount, and found him using the tooth-stick,
its one end being at his tongue (i.e. he was rinsing his mouth).
89
Abu Dawud said: Musaddad said that the tradition was lengthy but he
shortened it.
Abu Dawud said: A similar tradition has been reported on the authority
of Ibn 'Abbas. He mentioned only five sunnahs all relating to the head,
90
one of them being parting of the hair; it did not include the wearing
of the beard.
Abu Dawud said: The tradition as reported by Hammad has also been
transmitted by Talq b. Habib, Mujahid, and Bakr b. 'Abd Allah b. al-
Muzani as their own statement (not as a tradition of the Prophet). They
did not mention the words "leting the beard grow). The version
transmitted by Muhammad b. 'Abd Allah b. Abi Maryam, Abu Salamah, and
Abu Hurairah from the Prophet (pbuh) mentions the words "letting the
beard grow." A similar tradition has been reported by Ibrahim al-
Nakha'i. He mentioned the words "wearing the beard and circumcision."
Narated By 'Aisha, Ummul Mu'minin : The Prophet (pbuh) did not get up
after sleeping by night or by day without using the tooth-stick before
performing ablution.
Narated By Ibn Abbas : I spent a night with the Prophet (pbuh). When he
woke up from his sleep (in the later part of the night for prayer) he
came to his ablution water. He took the tooth-stick and used it. He
then recited the verse: "Verily in the creation of the heavens and the
earth and the alternation of the night and the day are tokens (of His
Sovereignty) for men of understanding" (Quran iii. 190). He then
recited these verses almost up-to the end of the chapter or he finished
the whole chapter. He then performed ablution and came to the place of
prayer. He then said two rak'ahs of prayer. He then lay down on the bed
and slept as much as Allah wished. He then got up and did the same. He
then lay down and slept. He then got up and did the same. Every time he
used the tooth-stick and offered two rak'ahs of prayer. He then offered
the prayer known as witr.
91
Abu Dawud said: Fudail on the Authority of Husain reported the wording:
He then used the tooth-stick and performed ablution while he was
reciting the verses: "Verily in the creation of the heavens and the
earth..." until he finished the chapter.
Narated By Abu al-Malih : The Prophet (pbuh) said: Allah does not
accept charity from goods acquired by embezzlement as He does not
accept prayer without purification.
Narated By Abu Hurairah : The Apostle of Allah (may peace be upon him)
said: Allah, the Exalted, does not accept the prayer of any one of you
when you are defiled until you perform ablution.
Narated By Ali ibn Abu Talib : The key to prayer is purification; its
beginning is takbir and its end is taslim.
Narated By Abdullah ibn Umar : The Prophet (pbuh), was asked about
water (in desert country) and what is frequented by animals and wild
beasts. He replied: When there is enough water to fill two pitchers, it
bears no impurity.
Narated By 'Abd Allah b. 'Umar : The Apostle of Allah (pbuh) said: When
there is enough water to fill two pitchers, it does not become impure.
Abu Dawud said: Hammad b. Zaid has narrated this tradition on the
authority of 'Asim (without any reference to the Prophet).
Narated By Abu Sa'id al-Khudri : I heard that the people asked the
Prophet of Allah (pbuh): Water is brought for you from the well of
Buda'ah. It is a well in which dead dogs, menstrual clothes and
excrement of people are thrown. The Messenger of Allah (pbuh) replied:
Verily water is pure and is not defiled by anything.
Narated By Abdullah ibn Abbas : One of the wives of the Prophet (pbuh)
took a bath from a large bowl. The Prophet (pbuh) wanted to perform
93
ablution or take from the water left over. She said to him: O Prophet
of Allah, verily I was sexually defiled. The Prophet said: Water not
defiled.
Narated By Abu Hurairah : The Prophet (pbuh) said: None amongst you
should urinate in standing water, and then wash in it.
Narated By Abu Hurayrah : The Prophet (pbuh) said: None amongst you
should urinate in standing water, then wash in it after sexual
defilement.
Abu Dawud said: A similar tradition has been narated by Abu Ayyub and
Habib b. al-Shahid on the authority of Muhammad.
Narated By Abu Hurairah : The Prophet (pbuh) said: When a dog licks a
(thing contained in a) utensil you must wash it seven times, using
earth (sand) for the seventh time.
94
Abu Dawud said: This tradition has been transmitted by another chain of
narrators in which there is no mention of earth.
Narated By Abu Qatadah : Kabshah, daughter of Ka'b ibn Malik and wife
of Ibn AbuQatadah, reported: AbuQatadah visited (me) and I poured out
water for him for ablution. A cat came and drank some of it and he
tilted the vessel for it until it drank some of it. Kabshah said: He
saw me looking at him; he asked me: Are you surprised, my niece? I
said: Yes. He then reported the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) as saying: It
is not unclean; it is one of those (males or females) who go round
among you.
Narated By 'Aisha, Ummul Mu'minin : Dawud ibn Salih ibn Dinar at-Tammar
quoted his mother as saying that her mistress sent her with some
pudding (harisah) to 'Aisha who was offering prayer. She made a sign to
me to place it down. A cat came and ate some of it, but when 'Aisha
finished her prayer, she ate from the place where the cat had eaten.
She stated: The Messenger of Allah (pbuh) said: It is not unclean: it
is one of those who go round among you. She added: I saw the Messenger
of Allah (pbuh) performing ablution from the water left over by the cat.
Narated By Ibn 'Umar : The males and the females during the time of
Apostle of Allah (pbuh) used to perform ablution from one vessel
together.
Narated By 'Abd Allah b. 'Umar : We (men and the women during the
lifetime of the Apostle of Allah (pbuh) used to perform ablution from
one vessel. We all put our hands in it.
The version of Musaddad adds: "That they both take the handful of water
together."
Narated By Hakam ibn Amr : The Prophet (pbuh) forbade that the male
should perform ablution with the water left over by the female.
Narated By Abdullah ibn Mas'ud : Abu Zayd quoted Abdullah ibn Mas'ud as
saying that on the night when the jinn listened to the Qur'an the
Prophet (pbuh) said: What is in your skin vessel? He said: I have some
nabidh. He (the Holy Prophet) said: It consists of fresh dates and pure
water.
Sulayman ibn Dawud reported the same version of this tradition on the
authority of AbuZayd or Zayd. But Sharik said that Hammad did not
mention the words "night of the jinn".
Narated By Jabir ibn Abdullah : The Prophet (pbuh) used to take a bath
with a sa' (of water) and perform ablution with a mudd (of water)
Abu Dawud said: This tradition has been narrated on the authority of
Anas through a different chain. This version narrates: "He performed
ablution with one makkuh." It makes no mention of two rotls.
Abu Dawud said: This tradition has also been narrated by Yahya b. Adam
from Sharik. But the chain mentions Ibn Jabr b. 'Atik instead of 'Abd
Allah b. Jabr.
Abu Dawud said: I heard Ahmad b. Hanbal say: One sa' measures five
rotls. It was the sa' of Ibn Abi Dhib and also of the Prophet (may
peace be upon him).
------------------------------
Chapter : Performing ablution in full.
Narated By 'Abd Allah b. 'Amr : The Messenger of Allah (pbuh) saw some
people (performing ablution) while their heels were dry. Hen then said:
Woe to the heels because of Hell. Perform the ablution in full.
Narated By N/A : This tradition has also been narrated on the authority
of 'Aisha through a different chain.
Narated By Abdullah ibn Zayd : The Messenger of Allah (pbuh) came upon
us. We brought water for him in a brass vessel and he performed
ablution.
Chapter : A man who puts his hands in the utensil before washing it.
Narated By 'Abd al-Rahman al-Taimi : Ibn Abi Mulaikah was asked about
ablution. He called for water. A vessel was then brought to him. He
inclined it towards his right hand (poured water over it). He the put
it in water; then he rinsed his mouth three times and cleansed his nose
with water three times, and washed his face three times. He then put
his hand in water and took it out; he then wiped his head and ears, in
and out only once. He then washed his feet, and said: Where are those
who ask me to perform ablution? I saw the Messenger of Allah (pbuh)
performing ablution like that.
Abu Dawud said: All the sound traditions narrated by 'Uthman indicate
that head is to be wiped once, because they mentioned (the washing of
each part in) ablution three times. In their versions of the tradition
they mentioned the wording: "he wiped his head." In this case they did
not mention any number as they did in other cases.
Narated By :
Abu Dawud said: Another version says: "He performed ablution three
times only."
------------------------------
Chapter : A man who puts his hands in the utensil before washing it.
Narated By Ali ibn Abu Talib : Abdu Khayr said: Ali came upon us and he
had already offered prayer. He called for water. We asked: What will
you do with water when you have already offered prayer? - Perhaps to
teach us. A utensil containing water and a wash-basin were brought (to
him).
He poured water from the utensil on his right hand and washed both his
hands three times, rinsed the mouth, snuffed up water and cleansed the
nose three times. He then rinsed the mouth and snuffed up water with
the same hand by which he took water. He then washed his face three
times, and washed his right hand three times and washed his left hand
three times. He then put his hand in water and wiped his head once.
He then washed his right foot thrice and left foot thrice, then said:
If one is pleased to know the method of performing ablution of the
Apostle of Allah, this is how he did it.
Narated By 'Abd Khair : 'Ali offered the dawn prayer and went out to
Rahbah (a locality in Kufah). He called for water. A boy brought him a
vessel containing water and a wash-basin. He held the vessel with his
right hand and poured water over his left hand. He washed both his
hands (to the wrist) three times. He then put his right hand in the
vessel (to take water) and rinsed his mouth three times and snuffed up
water three times. He then narrated almost the same tradition as
narrated by Abu 'Awanah. He then wiped his head, both its back and
front sides, once. He then narrated the tradition in a like manner.
Narated By Ibn 'Abbas : 'Ali b. Abi Talib entered upon me after he had
passed water. He then called for water for ablution. We brought to him
a vessel containing water, and placed it before him. He said: O Ibn
'Abbas, may I not show you how the Apostle of Allah (may peace be upon
him) used to perform ablution? I replied: Why not? He then inclined the
vessel to his hand and washed it. He then put his right hand in the
vessel and poured water over the other hand and washed his hands up to
the wrist. He then rinsed his mouth and snuffed up water. He then put
both of his hands together in the water and took out a handful of water
and threw it upon the face. He then inserted both of his thumbs in the
front part of the ears. He did like that twice and thrice. He then took
a handful of water and poured it over his forehead and left it running
down his face. He then washed his forearms up to the elbows three
times. He then wiped his head and the back of his ears. He then put
both of his hands together in the water and took a ha4ldful of it and
threw it on his foot. He had a shoe on his foot which he twisted (or
washed) by throwing water; then he washed his other foot like that. Do
you wash your foot while it is in the shoe? He replied: Yes, while it
is in the shoe. This question and answer were repeated thrice.
Abu Dawud said: The version transmitted by Ibn Juraij from Shaibah is
similar to the one narrated by 'Ali. In this version Hajjaj reported on
the authority of Ibn Juraij the wording: He wiped his head once. Ibn
Wahb narrated from Ibn Juraij the wording: He wiped his head three
times.
Chapter : A man who puts his hands in the utensil before washing it.
Narated By N/A : Another version says: He wiped his ears inside and
outside. Hisham adds: He inserted his fingers into the ear holes.
Abu Dawud said: The tradition narrated by Musaddad carries the same
meaning.
------------------------------
Chapter : A man who puts his hands in the utensil before washing it.
Narated By Al-Rubayyi' : The Prophet (pbuh) wiped his head with water
which was left over in his hand.
Narated By Abdullah ibn Abbas : Sa'id ibn Jubayr reported: Ibn Abbas
saw the Apostle of Allah (pbuh) performed ablution. He narrated the
tradition which says that he (the Prophet) performed each detail of
ablution three times. He wiped his head and ears once.
Narated By Abu Umamah : Abu Umamah mentioned how the Messenger of Allah
(pbuh) performed ablution, saying that he used to wipe the corners of
his eyes, and he said that the ears are treated as part of the head.
Narated By Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-'As : A man came to the Prophet
(pbuh) and asked him: Messenger of Allah, how is the ablution (to
performed)?
He (the Prophet) then called for water in a vessel and washed his hands
up to the wrists three times, then washed his face three times, and
washed his forearms three times. He then wiped his head and inserted
both his index fingers in his ear-holes; he wiped the back of his ears
with his thumbs and the front of his ears with the index fingers. He
then washed his feet three times.
Narated By Abu Hurairah : The Prophet (peace be upon him) washed the
limbs in ablution twice.
Narated By 'Ata b. Yasar quoting Ibn 'Abbas : Do you like that I should
show you how the Messenger (peace be upon him) performed ablution? He
then called for a vessel of water and took a handful of water with his
right hand. He then rinsed his mouth and snuffed up water. He then took
out another handful of water and washed his face by both his hands
together. He then took out another handful of water and washed his
right hand and then washed his left hand by taking out another. He then
took out some water and shook his hand and wiped his head and ears with
it. He then took out a handful of water and sprinkled it over his right
foot in his shoe and wiped the upper part of the foot with one hand,
and beneath the shoe with his other hand. He then did the same with his
left foot.
Narated By 'Ata b. Yasar quoting Ibn 'Abbas : May I not tell you how
the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) performed ablution? He then
performed ablution washing each limb only once.
Narated By Abu Hurairah : The Apostle of Allah (pbuh) said: When any of
you performs ablution, he should snuff up water in his nose and eject
mucus.
Then the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) came. He asked: Has anything been
served to you or ordered for you? We replied: Yes, Messenger of Allah.
While we were sitting in the company of the Messenger of Allah (pbuh)
we suddenly saw that a shepherd was driving a herd of sheep to their
fold. He had with him a newly-born lamb that was crying.
He (the Prophet) asked him: What did it bear, O so and so? He replied:
A ewe. He then said: Slaughter for us in its place a sheep. Do not
think that we are slaughtering it for you. We have one hundred sheep
and we do not want their number to increase. Whenever a ewe is born, we
slaughter a sheep in its place.
109
(The narrator says that the Prophet (pbuh) used the word la tahsabanna,
do not think).
I (the narrator Laqit) then said: Messenger of Allah, I have a wife who
has something (wrong) in her tongue, i.e. she is insolent. He said:
Then divorce her. I said: Messenger of Allah, she had company with me
and I have children from her. He said: Then ask her (to obey you). If
there is something good in her, she will do so (obey); and do not beat
your wife as you beat your slave-girl.
Narated By N/A : The version of Ibn Juraij has the wording: "If you
perform ablution, then rinse your mouth,"
Abu Dawud said: Abu Sa'id al-Khudri, Ibn al-Zubair and Ibn 'Umar hold
the opinion that whoever gets an odd number of the rak'ahs of prayer,
he should perform two prostrations on account of forgetfulness.
Narated By Khuzaymah ibn Thabit : The Prophet (pbuh) said: The time
limit for wiping over the socks for a traveller is three days (and
three nights) and for a resident it is one day and one night.
Abu Dawud said: Another version says: He asked him about the period
until he reached the period of seven days. The Messenger of Allah
(pbuh) replied: Yes, as long as you wish (i.e. there is no time limit.
Abu Dawud said: 'Abd al-Rahman b. Mahdi did not narrate this tradition
because the familiar version from al-Mughairah says that the Prophet
(pbuh) wiped over the socks.
Abu Musa al-Ashari has also reported: The Prophet (pbuh) wiped over the
stockings. But the chain of narrators in this tradition is neither
continuous nor strong.
'Ali b. Abi Talib, Ibn Mas'ud, al-Bara b. 'Azib, Anas b. Malik, Abu
Umamah, Sahl b. Sa'd and 'Amr b. Huraith also wiped over the stockings.
Narated By Aws ibn Abu Aws ath-Thaqafi : The Messenger of Allah (pbuh)
performed ablution and wiped over his shoes and feet.
Another version adds: "On the back (upper part) of the socks."
Narated By Ali ibn Abu Talib : If the religion were based on opinion,
it would be more important to wipe the under part of the shoe than the
upper but I have seen the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) wiping over the
upper part of his shoes.
------------------------------
Chapter : How to wipe over the socks.
Another version says: I saw 'Ali perform ablution and wash the upper
part of his feet, and say: Had I not seen the Messenger of Allah (pbuh)
doing like this - and he narrated the tradition in full.
Abu Dawud said: A group of scholars agreed with Sufyan upon this chain
of narrators. Some have mentioned the name of Sufyan b. al-Hakam, and
others al-Hakam b. Sufyan.
------------------------------
Chapter : Leaving any spot dry in ablution.
Abu Dawud said: This tradition is not known through Jarir b. Hazim. It
was transmitted only by Ibn Wahab.
Another version adds the wording: "Go back and perform the ablution
well."
Narated By N/A : Hasan narrated from the Prophet (may peace be upon
him) a tradition conveying the same meaning as that of Qatadah.
------------------------------
Chapter : Ablution does not become void by kissing a woman.
Abu Dawud said: this tradition is Mursal (i.e. when the link of
Companions is missing and the successor reports from the Prophet
directly). Ibrahim al-Taimi did not hear anything from 'Aisha.
Abu Dawud said: Al-Firyabi and others narrated this tradition in a like
manner.
Narated By 'Aisha : The Prophet (may peace be upon him) kissed one of
his wives and went out for saying prayer He did not perform ablution.
'Urwah said: I said to her: Who is she except you! Thereupon she
laughed. Abu Dawud said: The same version has been reported through a
different chain of narrators.
Yahya said: Narrate from me that both these traditions are weak in
respect of their chains.
Abu Dawud said: Al-Thawri is reported to have said: Habib narrated this
tradition to us only on the authority of 'Urwat al-Muzani, that is, he
did not narrate any tradition on the authority of 'Urwah b. al-Zubair.
Narated By Talq : We came upon the Prophet of Allah (pbuh). A man came
to him: he seemed to be a bedouin. He said: Prophet of Allah, what do
you think about a man who touches his penis after performing ablution?
He (pbuh) replied: That is only a part of his body.
Abu Dawud said: This tradition has been narrated through a different
chain of narrators.
Narated By N/A : This tradition has also been reported by Qais b. Talq
through a different chain of narrators. This version adds the wording:
"during the prayer."
Narated By Al-Bara' ibn Azib : The Messenger of Allah (pbuh) was asked
about performing ablution after eating the flesh of the camel. He
replied: Perform ablution, after eating it. He was asked about
performing ablution after eating meat. He replied: Do not perform
ablution after eating it. He was asked about saying prayer in places
where the camels lie down. He replied: Do not offer prayer in places
where the camels lie down. These are the places of Satan. He was asked
about saying prayer in the sheepfolds. He replied: You may offer prayer
in such places; these are the places of blessing.
Narated By Abu Sa'id al-Khudri : The Prophet (pbuh) passed by a boy who
was skinning a goat. The Messenger of Allah (pbuh) said: Give it up
until I show you. He (the Prophet) inserted his hand between the skin
and the flesh until it reached the armpit. He then went away and led
the people in prayer and he did not perform ablution. The version of
Amr added that he did not touch water.
Abu Dawud said: This tradition has been narrated through another chain
of transmitters, making no mention of Abu Sa'id.
119
Narated By Ibn 'Abbas : The Messenger of Allah (pbuh) took (the meat
of) a (goat's) shoulder and offered prayer and did not perform ablution.
Narated By Ibn 'Abbas : The Prophet (may peace be upon him) ate a
little meat from a (goat's) shoulder. He then offered prayer and did
not perform ablution.
120
Narated By Abdullah ibn Harith ibn Jaz' : One of the Companions of the
Prophet (may peace be upon), came upon us in Egypt. When he was
narrating traditions in the Mosque of Egypt, I heard him say: I was the
seventh or the sixth person in the company of the Messenger of Allah
(peace be upon him) in the house of a person.
In the meantime Bilal came and called him for prayer. He came out and
passed by a person who had his fire-pan on the fire. The Messenger of
Allah (pbuh) said to him: Has the food in the fire-pan been cooked? He
replied: Yes, my parents be sacrificed upon you. He then took a piece
out of it and continued to chew it until he uttered the first takbir
(Allahu-Akbar) of the prayer. All this time I was looking at him.
Narated By Umm Habibah : Abu Sufyan ibn Sa'id ibn al-Mughirah reported
that he entered upon Umm Habibah who presented him a glass of sawiq (a
drink prepared with flour and water) to drink. He called for water and
rinsed his mouth. She said: O my cousin, don't you perform ablution?
The Prophet (pbuh) said: Perform ablution after eating anything cooked
with fire, or he said: anything touched by fire.
Narated By 'Abd Allah b. 'Abbas : The Prophet (pbuh) drank some milk
and then rinsed his mouth saying: It contains greasiness.
Narated By Anas ibn Malik : The Messenger of Allah (pbuh) drank some
milk and he did not rinse his mouth nor did he perform ablution, and he
offered the prayer.
He went out following the footsteps of the Prophet (pbuh). The Prophet
(pbuh) encamped at a certain place. He said: Who will keep a watch on
us? A person from the Muhajirun (Emigrants) and another from the Ansar
(Helpers) responded. He said: Go to the mouth of the mountain-pass.
When they went to the mouth of the mountain-pass the man from the
Muhajirun lay down while the man from the Ansar stood praying.
The man (enemy) came to them. When he saw the person he realised that
he was the watchman of the Muslims. He shot him with an arrow and hit
the target. But he (took the arrow out and) threw it away. He (the
enemy) then shot three arrows. Then he (the Muslim) bowed and
prostrated and woke his companion. When he (the enemy) perceived that
they (the Muslims) had become aware of his presence, he ran away.
When the man from the Muhajirun saw the (man from the Ansar) bleeding,
he asked him: Glory be to Allah! Why did you not wake me up the first
time when he shot at you.
He replied: I was busy reciting a chapter of the Qur'an. I did not like
to leave it.
122
Narated By 'Abd Allah b. 'Umar : One night the Messenger of Allah (may
peace be upon him) was busy and he delayed the night ('isha') prayer so
much so that we dosed in the mosque. We awoke, then dozed, and again
awoke and again dozed. He (the Prophet) then came upon us and said :
There is none except you who is waiting for prayer.
Abu Dawud said : This tradition has been narrated through a different
chain of narrators.
Narated By Anas b. Malik : (The people) stood up for the night prayer
and a man stood up and spoke forth Apostle of Allah, I have to say
something to you. He (the Prophet) entered into secret conversation
with him, till the people or some of the people dozed off, and then he
led them in prayer. He (Thabit al-Bunani) did not mention ablution.
Abu Dawud said: The statement "ablution is necessary for one who sleeps
while one is lying down" is a Munkar (rejected) tradition. It has been
narrated only by Yazid Abu Khalid al-Dalani, on the authority of
Qatadah. And its earlier part has been narrated by a group (of
123
narrators) from lbn 'Abbas; they did not mention anything about it. He
(Ibn 'Abbas) said: The Prophet (may peace be upon him) was protected
(during his sleep). 'Aisha reported: The Prophet (may peace be upon
him) said: My eyes sleep, but my heart does not sleep. Shu'bah said:
Qatadah heard from Abu'l-'Aliyah only four traditions: the tradition
about Jonah son of Matthew, the tradition reported by Ibn Umar about
prayer, the tradition stating that the judges are three, and the
tradition narrated by Ibn 'Abbas saying: (This tradition) has been
narrated to me by reliable persons; 'Umar is one of them, and the most
reliable of them in my opinion is 'Umar. Abu Dawud said: I asked Ahmad
b. Hanbal about the tradition narrated by Yazid al-Dälini. He rebuked
me out of respect for him. Then he said: Yazid al-Dalani does not add
anything to what has been narrated by the teachers of Qatadah. He did
not care for this tradition (due to its weakness).
Narated By Ali ibn Abu Talib : The Apostle of Allah (pbuh) said: The
eyes are the leather strap of the anus, so one who sleeps should
perform ablution.
Narated By Abdullah ibn Mas'ud : We would not wash our feet after
treading on something unclean, nor would we hold our hair and garments
(during prayer).
Narated By Ali ibn Talq : The Apostle of Allah (pbuh) said: When any of
you breaks wind during the prayer, he should turn away and perform
ablution and repeat the prayer.
------------------------------
Chapter : On prostatic fluid madhi.
Narated By Al-Miqdad ibn al-Aswad : Ali ibn Abu Talib commanded him to
ask the Apostle of Allah (pbuh) what a man should do when he wants to
have intercourse with his wife and the prostatic fluid comes out (at
this moment). (He said): I am ashamed of consulting him because of the
position of his daughter. Al-Miqdad said: I asked the Apostle of Allah
(pbuh) about it. He said: When any of you finds, he should wash his
private part, and perform ablution as he does for prayer.
Abu Dawud said: The tradition has been narrated by al-Thawri and a
group of narrators from Hisham on the authority of his father from al-
Miqdad, from 'All reporting from the Prophet (may peace be upon him).
Abu Dawud said: This tradition has been reported with another chain of
narrators. This version does not mention the word "testicles."
The narrator also mentioned (the lawfulness of) eating with a woman in
menstruation, and he transmitted the tradition in full.
Narated By Mu'adh ibn Jabal : I asked the Apostle of Allah (pbuh): What
is lawful for a man to do with his wife when she is menstruating? He
replied: What is above the waist-wrapper, but it is better to abstain
from it, too.
Narated By Ubayy b. Ka'b : The Apostle of Allah (may peace be upon him)
made a concession in the early days of Islam on account of the paucity
of clothes that one should not take a bath if one has sexual
intercourse (and has no seminal emission). But later on he commanded to
take a bath in such a case and prohibited its omission.
Narated By N/A : Abu Hurairah reported the Prophet (may peace be upon
him) as saying: When anyone sits between the four parts of a woman and
the parts (of the male and the female) which are circumcised join
together, then bath becomes obligatory.
Narated By Anas : One day the Apostle of Allah (may peace be upon him)
had sexual intercourse with (all) his wives with a single bath.
Abu Dawud said: This tradition has been transmitted through another
chain of narrators.
Abu Dawud said: The tradition narrated by Anas is more sound than this
tradition.
Narated By Abu Rafi' : One day the Prophet (pbuh) had intercourse with
all his wives. He took a bath after each intercourse. I asked him:
Apostle of Allah, why don't you make it a single bath? He replied: This
is more purifying, better and cleaning.
Narated By Abu Sa'id al-Khudri : The Prophet (may peace be upon him)
said: When any of you has intercourse with his wife and desires to
repeat it, he should perform ablution between them.

Narated By 'Aisha : When the Prophet (may peace be upon him) intended
to sleep while he was sexually defiled, he would perform ablution as he
did for prayer.
Abu Dawud said: Ibn Wahb narrated this tradition on the authority of
Yunus. He described the fact of eating as the statement of 'Aisha (not
the saying of the Prophet). It has also been narrated through another
chain on the authority of Ihn al-Mubarak. He narrated it from 'Urwah or
Abu Salamah. Al-Awza'i narrated it from Yunus on the authority of al-
Zuhri from the Prophet (may peace be upon him) as narrated by Ibn al-
Mubarak.
Narated By 'Aisha : When the Prophet (may peace be upon him) wanted to
eat or sleep, he would perform ablution. She meant that (the Prophet
did so) when he was sexually defiled.
------------------------------
Chapter : A peerson who is sexually defiled is permitted to eat
anything before washing.
I again asked her: What do you think, did the Apostle of Allah (pbuh)
say the witr prayer (additional prayer after obligatory prayer at
night) in the beginning of the night or at the end?
She replied: Sometimes he would say the witr prayer at the beginning of
the night and sometimes at the end.
I exclaimed: Allah is most Great. All praise be to Allah Who made the
matter accommodative.
Again I asked her: What do you think, did the Apostle of Allah (pbuh)
recite the Qur'an (in the prayer) loudly or softly?
I exclaimed: Allah is most Great. All praise be to Allah Who made the
matter flexible.
Narated By Ali ibn Abu Talib : The Prophet (pbuh) said: Angels do not
enter the house where there is a picture, or a dog, or a person who is
sexually defiled.
Thereupon he said: The Apostle of Allah (pbuh) came out from the privy
and taught us the Qur'an and took meat with us. Nothing prevented him;
or the narrator said: Nothing prevented him from (reciting) the Qur'an
except sexual defilement.
Narated By Abu Bakrah : The Apostle of Allah (pbuh) began to lead (the
people) in the dawn prayer. He then signalled with his hand: (Stay) at
your places. (Then he entered his home). He then returned while drops
of water were coming down from him (from his body) and he led them in
prayer.
Narated By 'Aisha, Ummul Mu'minin : The Prophet (pbuh) was asked about
a person who found moisture (on his body or clothes) but did not
remember the sexual dream. He replied: He should take a bath. He was
asked about a person who remembered that he had a sexual dream but did
not find moisture. He replied: Bath is not necessary for him. Umm
Salamah then asked: Is washing necessary for a woman if she sees that
(in her dream)? He replied: Yes. Woman are counterpart of men.
Narated By 'Aisha, Ummul Mu'minin : Jumay' ibn Umayr, one of the sons
of Banu Taym Allah ibn Tha'labah, said: Accompanied by my mother and
aunt I entered upon 'Aisha. One of them asked her: How did you do while
taking a bath? 'Aisha replied: The Apostle of Allah (pbuh) performed
ablution (in the beginning) as he did for prayer. He then poured
(water) upon his head three times. But we poured water upon our heads
five times due to plaits.
The Apostle of Allah (pbuh) kept on praying to Allah until the number
of prayers was reduced to five and washing because of sexual defilement
was allowed only once and washing the urine from the clothe was also
permitted only once.
Narated By Ali ibn Abu Talib : The Apostle of Allah (pbuh) said: If
anyone who is sexual defiled leaves a spot equal to the breadth of a
hair without washing, such and such an amount of Hell-fire will have to
be suffered for it. Ali said: On that account I treated my head (hair)
as an enemy, meaning I cut my hair. He used to cut the hair (of his
head). May Allah be pleased with him.
Narated By Thawban : Shurayh ibn Ubayd said: Jubayr ibn Nufayr gave me
a verdict about the bath because of sexual defilement that Thawban
reported to them that they asked the Prophet (pbuh) about it. He (the
Prophet) replied: As regards man, he should undo the hair of his head
and wash it until the water should reach the roots of the hair. But
there is no harm if the woman does not undo it (her hair) and pour
three handfuls of water over her head.
Narated By Abdullah ibn Abbas : The Prophet (pbuh) said about a person
who had intercourse with his wife while she was menstruating: He must
give one dinar or half a dinar in alms.
Narated By 'Aisha, Ummul Mu'minin : Umarah ibn Ghurab said that his
paternal aunt narrated to him that she asked 'Aisha: What if one of us
menstruates and she and her husband have no bed except one? She
replied: I relate to you what the Apostle of Allah (pbuh) had done.
One night he entered (upon me) while I was menstruating. He went to the
place of his prayer, that is, to the place of prayer reserved (for this
purpose) in his house. He did not return until I felt asleep heavily,
and he felt pain from cold. And he said: Come near me. I said: I am
menstruating. He said: Uncover your thighs. I, therefore, uncovered
both of my thighs. Then he put his cheek and chest on my thighs and I
lent upon he until he became warm and slept.
she used to menstruate each month before she was afflicted with this
trouble and abandon prayer during that period each month. When those
days and nights are over, she should take a bath, tie a cloth over her
private parts and pray.
He said: I suggest that you should use cotton, for it absorbs the
blood. She replied: It is too copious for that. He said: Then take a
cloth. She replied: It is too copious for that, for my blood keeps
flowing. The Apostle of Allah (pbuh) said: I shall give you two
commands; whichever of them you follow, that will be sufficient for you
without the other, but you know best whether you are strong enough to
follow both of them.
He added: This is a stroke of the Devil, so observe your menses for six
or seven days, Allah alone knows which it should be; then wash. And
when you see that you are purified and quite clean, pray during twenty-
three or twenty-four days and nights and fast, for that will be enough
for you, and do so every month, just as women menstruate and are
purified at the time of their menstruation and their purification.
But if you are strong enough to delay the noon (Zuhr) prayer and
advance the afternoon ('Asr) prayer, to wash, and then combine the noon
and the afternoon prayer; to delay the sunset prayer and advance the
night prayer, to wash, and then combine the two prayers, do so: and to
wash at dawn, do so: and fast if you are able to do so if possible;
The Apostle of Allah (pbuh) said: Of the two commands this is more to
my liking.
I (Shu'bah) asked Abdur Rahman: (Is it) from the Prophet (pbuh)? I do
not report to you anything except from the Prophet (pbuh).
Narated By Ali ibn Abu Talib : The woman who has a prolonged flow of
blood should wash herself every day when her menstrual period is over
and take a woollen cloth greased with fat or oil (to tie over the
private parts).
then she should wash and pray, if she sees anything (which renders
ablution void) she should perform ablution and pray.
When the Apostle of Allah (pbuh) saw what had happened to me and saw
the blood, he said: Perhaps you are menstruating.
I said: Yes. He then said: Set yourself right (i.e. tie some cloth to
prevent bleeding), then take a vessel of water and put some salt in it,
and then wash the blood from the back of the saddle, and then return to
your mount. When the Apostle of Allah (pbuh) conquered Khaybar, he gave
us a portion of the booty. Whenever the woman became purified from her
menses, she would put salt in water. And when she died, she left a will
to put salt in the water for washing her (after death).
Ibn Nufayl added: Usayd said to her: May Allah have mercy upon you!
Never has there been an occasion when you were beset with an unpleasant
matter but Allah made the Muslims and you come out of that.
137
Narated By Ammar ibn Yasir : They (the Companions of the Prophet) wiped
with pure earth (their hands and face) to offer the dawn prayer in the
company of the Apostle of Allah (pbuh). They struck the ground with
their palms and wiped their faces once. Then they repeated and struck
the ground with their palms once again and wiped their arms completely
up to the shoulders and up to the armpits with the inner side of their
hands.
Narated By Amr ibn al-'As : I had a sexual dream on a cold night in the
battle of Dhat as-Salasil. I was afraid, if I washed I would die. I,
therefore, performed tayammum and led my companions in the dawn prayer.
They mentioned that to the Apostle of Allah (pbuh). He said: Amr, you
led your companions is prayer while you were sexually defiled? I
informed him of the cause which impeded me from washing. And I said: I
heard Allah say: "Do not kill yourself, verily Allah is merciful to
you." The Apostle of Allah (pbuh) laughed and did not say anything.
Narated By Abu Qais, the freed slave of 'Amr b. Al-'As : 'Amr b. al-'As
was in a battle. He then narrated the rest of the tradition. He then
said: He washed his armpits and other joints where dirt was found, and
he performed ablution like that for prayer. Then he led them in prayer.
He then narrated the tradition in a simmilar way but did not make a
mention pf tayammum.
Abu Dawud said: This incident has also been narrated by al-Awaza'i on
the authority of Hassan b. 'Atiyyah. This version has the words: then
he performed tayammaum.
Narated By Jabir : We set out on a journey. One of our people was hurt
by a stone, that injured his head. He then had a sexual dream. He asked
his fellow travellers: Do you find concession for me to perform
tayammum? They said: We do not find any concession for you while you
can use water. He took a bath and died. When we came o the Prophet
(pbuh), the incident was reported to him. He said: They killed him, may
Allah kill them! Could they not ask when they did not know? The cure of
ignorance is inquiry. It was enough for him to perform tayammum and to
pour some drops of water or to bind a bandage over the wound (the
narrator Musa was doubtful); then he should have wiped over it and
washed the rest of his body.
Narated By Abdullah ibn Abbas : A man was injured during the lifetime
of the Apostle of Allah (pbuh); he then had a sexual dream, and he was
advised to wash and he washed himself. Consequently he died. When this
was reported to the Apostle of Allah (pbuh) he said: They killed him;
may Allah kill them! Is not inquiry the cure of ignorance?
Abu Dawud said: Besides Ibn Nafi' this is transmitted by al-Laith from
'Umairah b. Abi Najiyyah from Bakr b. Sawdah on the authority of 'Ata'
b. Yasar from the Prophet (pbuh).
Abu Dawud said: The mention of (the name of Companion) Abu Sa'id in
this tradition is not guarded. This is a mursal tradition (i.e. the
Successor 'Ata' b. Yasar directly narrates it from the Prophet, leaving
the name of the Companions in the chain).
Abu Dawud said: If one takes a bath after sunrise, even though he
washes because of seminal emission, that would be enough for him for
his washing on Friday.
140
Narated By Abu Sa'id al-Khudri and Abu Hurairah : The Apostle of Allah
(pbuh) said: If anyone takes a bath on Friday, puts on his best
clothes, applies a touch of perfume if he has any, then goes to the
congregational prayer (in the mosque), and takes care not to step over
people, then prays what Allah has prescribed for him, then keeps silent
for the time his Imam comes out until he finishes his prayer, it would
atone for his sins during the previous week.
Abu Hurairah said: (It would atone for his sins) for three days more.
He further said: One is rewarded ten times for doing good work.
Narated By 'Abd al-Rahman b. Abi Sa'id al-Khudri from his father : The
Prophet (pbuh) said: Washing and the use of tooth-stick are necessary
for every adult (person) on Friday; and everyone should apply perfume
whatever one has. The narrator Bukhair did not make a mention of 'Abd
al-Rahman; and about perfume he said that even it might be of the kind
used by women.
------------------------------
Chapter : A peerson who is sexually defiled is permitted to eat
anything before washing.
Narated By Makhul : Makhul was asked about the meaning of the words
ghassala and ightasala (that occurs in tradition 345) and he said: one
should wash one's head and body well (and not that one should make
one's wife wash).
offers a hen; he who goes out in the fifth instance is treated as one
who offers an egg. When the Imm comes out (for sermon), the angels too
attend to listen to the sermon.
Narated By 'Aisha : The people (mostly) were workers and they would
come for Friday prayer in the same condition, so it was said to them:
Would to Allah that you wash yourself.
Narated By 'Amr b. Abi 'Amr and 'Ikrimah : Some people of iraq came and
said: Ibn 'Abbas, do you regard taking a bath on Friday as obligatory?
He said: No, it is only a means of cleanliness, and it is better for
one who washes oneself. Anyone who does not take a bath, it is not
essential for him. I inform you how the bath (on Friday) commenced. The
people were poor and used to wear woollen clothes, and would carry
loads on their backs. Their mosque was small and its roof was lowered
down. It was a sort of trelis of vine. The Apostle of Allah (pbuh) once
came out on a hot day and the people perspired profusely in woollen
clothes so much so that the foul smell emitted from them and it caused
trouble to each other. When the Apostle of Allah (pbuh) found that foul
smell, he said: O people, when this day (Friday) comes, you should take
a bath and everyone of you should anoint the best oil and perfume one
has. Ibn 'Abbas then said: Then Allah, the Exalted, provided wealth (to
the people) and they wore clothes other than the woollen, and were
spared from work, and their mosque became vast. The foul smell that
caused trouble to them became non-existent.
Narated By Qays ibn Asim : I came to the Prophet (pbuh) with the
intention of embracing Islam. He commanded me to take a bath with water
(boiled with) the leaves of the lote-tree.
143
Narated By Umm Salamah, Ummul Mu'minin : Bakkar ibn Yahya said that his
grandmother narrated to him: I entered upon Umm Salamah. A woman from
the Quraysh asked her about praying with the clothes which a woman wore
while she menstruated.
As regards the woman who had plaited hair - sometimes each of us had
plaited hair - when she washed, she would not undo the hair. She would
instead pour three handfuls of water upon her head. When she felt
moisture in the roots of her hair, she would rub them. Then she would
pour water upon her whole body.
Narated By Umm Habibah : Mu'awiyah ibn AbuSufyan asked his sister Umm
Habibah, the wife of the Prophet (pbuh): Would the apostle of Allah
(pbuh) pray in the clothe in which he had an intercourse? She said:
Yes, when he would not see any impurity in it.
Narated By 'Aisha : The Prophet (pbuh) would not pray in our quilts.
Hammad said: I heard Sa'id b. Abi Sadaqah say: I asked Muhammad (b.
Sarin) about it. He did not narrate it to me, but said: I heard it a
long time ago and I do not know from whom I heard it. I do not know
whether I heard it from a trustworthy person or not. Make an inquiry
about it.
------------------------------
Chapter : A peerson who is sexually defiled is permitted to eat
anything before washing.
Narated By 'Aisha : I used to rub off the semen from the clothe of the
Apostle of Allah (pbuh). He then would pray in it.
Abu Dawud said: Mughairah, Abu Ma'shar and wasil also narrated it to
the same effect.
Narated By Sulaiman b. Yasar : I heard 'Aisha say that she would wash
semen from the clothe of the Apostle of Allah (pbuh). She added: Then I
would see a mark or marks (after washing).
Chapter : How to clean the clothe smeared with the urine of a child.
Narated By N/A : Umm Qais, daughter of Mihsan reported that she came to
the Prophet (pbuh) with her little son who had not attained the age of
eating food. The Apostle of Allah (pbuh) seated him in his lap, and he
urinated on his clothe. He sent for water and sprayed it (over his
clothe) and did not wash it.
Narated By Ali ibn Abu Talib : The urine of a female (child) should be
washed and the urine of a male (child) should be sprinkled over until
the age of eating.
Narated By Ali b. Abi Talib : The Prophet (pbuh) said: He narrated the
tradition to the same effect, but he did not mention the words "until
the age of eating." This version adds: Qatadah said: This is valid
until the time they do not eat food; when they begin to eat, their
urine should be washed.
Narated By Abdullah ibn Ma'qil ibn Muqarrin : A bedouin prayed with the
Prophet (pbuh). He then narrated the tradition (No 0380) about
urinating of that bedouin. This version adds: The Prophet (pbuh) said:
Remove the earth where he urinated and throw it away and pour water
upon the place.
Narated By Abu Nadrah : The Apostle of Allah (pbuh) spat on his clothe
and scrubbed with a part of it.
Narated By N/A : A similar tradition has been reported by Anas from the
Prophet (pbuh) through a different chain of narrators.
Commentary
Technical wudu is only waajib for salaah. It is not necessary to
perform wudu before eating or immediately after relieving one's self.
Sayyidina Rasulullah Sallallahu 'Alayhi Wasallam did not perform wudu
for it must not be thought that wudu is compulsory after visiting the
toilet.
Commentary
It has been mentioned in the previous hadith, that it is not mustahab
to perform wudu before eating. It is better to be in the state of wudu
at all times. Physical cleanliness has an effect on spiritual
cleanliness. It is therefore recommended that wudhu be performed after
visiting the toilet.
Salmaan Faarisi Radiyallahu 'Anhu says: "I have read in-the Tauraah,
that performing wudu (washing the hands) after eating increases
blessings. I mentioned this to Rasulullah Sallailahu 'Alayhi Wasallam.
151
Commentary
It may be possible that only the time (after eating) is mentioned in
the Tauraah. In this manner the other time (before eating) was added to
the shari'ah of Muhammad Sallailahu 'Alayhi Wasallam. Many laws have
been revealed that were not in the shari'ah of the previous ambiyaa. It
is possible that both times are mentioned in the Tauraah, and since
changes have been made to it, the law of washing the hands before
eating, may have been removed from it. The 'ulama have stated that by
'Barakah (blessings) in washing the hands before eating', means
increase in the food, and filling of the stomach. The 'Barakah of
washing the hands after eating', means that the benefits and intention
of eating is fulfilled. i.e. It becomes part of the body, creates
energy and stamina, assists in strengthening one to perform 'ibaadah,
and to possess good manners.

Book 1. Purification.
Narated By Jabir ibn Abdullah : When the Prophet (pbuh) felt the need
of relieving himself, he went far off where no one could see him.
Narated By Anas b. Malik : When the Apostle of Allah (pbuh) entered the
toilet, he used to say (before entering) : "O Allah, I seek refuge in
thee."
He should not cleanse with his
right hand.
Narated By Abu Ayyub : The Holy Prophet (pbuh) said: "When you go to
the privy, neither turn your face nor your back towards the qibla at
the time of excretion or urination, but turn towards the east or the
west. (Abu Ayyub) said: When we came to syria, we found that the
toilets already built were facing the qiblah.
The version of Ahmad has: Then performs ablution there, for evil
thoughts come from it.
Narated By 'Aisha, Ummul Mu'minin : When the Prophet (pbuh) came out of
the privy, he used to say: "Grant me Thy forgiveness."
157
161
(pbuh) to provide us with a mount, and found him using the tooth-stick,
its one end being at his tongue (i.e. he was rinsing his mouth).
Abu Dawud said: Musaddad said that the tradition was lengthy but he
shortened it.
Abu Dawud said: A similar tradition has been reported on the authority
of Ibn 'Abbas. He mentioned only five sunnahs all relating to the head,
one of them being parting of the hair; it did not include the wearing
of the beard.
Every time he
163
used the tooth-stick and offered two rak'ahs of prayer. He then offered
the prayer known as witr.
The Prophet (pbuh) wanted to perform
ablution or take from the water left over.
168
Narated By Abdullah ibn Mas'ud : Abu Zayd quoted Abdullah ibn Mas'ud as
saying that on the night when the jinn listened to the Qur'an the
Prophet (pbuh) said: What is in your skin vessel? He said: I have some
nabidh. He (the Holy Prophet) said: It consists of fresh dates and pure
water.
Sulayman ibn Dawud reported the same version of this tradition on the
authority of AbuZayd or Zayd. But Sharik said that Hammad did not
mention the words "night of the jinn".
Chapter : Can a man offer prayer while he is feeling the call of nature.
------------------------------
Chapter : The quantity of water that is desirable for ablution.
Narated By Abdullah ibn Zayd : The Messenger of Allah (pbuh) came upon
us. We brought water for him in a brass vessel and he performed
ablution.
it is sufficient for him. The narrator did not mention prayer (in this
tradition).
174
He then narrated the tradition in a like manner.
much that drops (of water) were about to trickle down. He then washed
his feet three times and said: "This is how the Apostle of Allah (pbuh)
performed ablution.
Ibn
Wahb narrated from Ibn Juraij the wording: He wiped his head three
times.
176
reached the nape. He then returned them to the place from where he had
started.
Narated By N/A : Another version says: He wiped his ears inside and
outside. Hisham adds: He inserted his fingers into the ear holes.
Abu Dawud said: The tradition narrated by Musaddad carries the same
meaning.
Narated By Al-Rubayyi' : The Prophet (pbuh) wiped his head with water
which was left over in his hand.
Narated By Abdullah ibn Abbas : Sa'id ibn Jubayr reported: Ibn Abbas

his eyes, and he said that the ears are treated as part of the head.
181
191
Narated By Ibn 'Abbas : The Messenger of Allah (pbuh) took (the meat
of) a (goat's) shoulder and offered prayer and did not perform ablution.
Narated By Ibn 'Abbas : The Prophet (may peace be upon him) ate a
little meat from a (goat's) shoulder. He then offered prayer and did
not perform ablution.
192
194
It has been
narrated only by Yazid Abu Khalid al-Dalani, on the authority of
Qatadah. And its earlier part has been narrated by a group (of
195
narrators) from lbn 'Abbas; they did not mention anything about it. He
(Ibn 'Abbas) said: The Prophet (may peace be upon him) was protected
199
Thereupon he said: The Apostle of Allah (pbuh) came out from the privy
and taught us the Qur'an and took meat with us. Nothing prevented him;
or the narrator said: Nothing prevented him from (reciting) the Qur'an
except sexual defilement.
When those
days and nights are over, she should take a bath, tie a cloth over her
private parts and pray.
But if you are strong enough to delay the noon (Zuhr) prayer and
advance the afternoon ('Asr) prayer, to wash, and then combine the noon
and the afternoon prayer; to delay the sunset prayer and advance the
night prayer, to wash, and then combine the two prayers, do so: and to
wash at dawn, do so: and fast if you are able to do so if possible;
The Apostle of Allah (pbuh) said: Of the two commands this is more to
my liking.
I (Shu'bah) asked Abdur Rahman: (Is it) from the Prophet (pbuh)? I do
not report to you anything except from the Prophet (pbuh).
Narated By Ali ibn Abu Talib : The woman who has a prolonged flow of
blood should wash herself every day when her menstrual period is over
and take a woollen cloth greased with fat or oil (to tie over the
private parts).
then she should wash and pray, if she sees anything (which renders
ablution void) she should perform ablution and pray.
209
When this
was reported to the Apostle of Allah (pbuh) he said: They killed him;
may Allah kill them!
212
215
Fiqh-us-Sunnah.
Book 2. Ablution (Wudu').
Ablution means to wash one's face, hands, arms, head and feet with
water.
1. The Qur'an. Says Allah in the Qur'an, "O you who believe, when you
rise for prayer, wash your faces and your hands up to the elbows and
lightly rub your heads and (wash) your feet up to the ankles (al-
Mai'dah 6).
2. The Sunnah. Abu Hurairah reported that the Messenger of Allah said,
"Allah does not accept the prayer of one who nullified his ablution
until he performs it again." (Related by al-Bukhari, Muslim, Abu Dawud
and at-Tirmizhi.)
Many hadith state the virtues of ablution. We shall mention just a few:
beneath his eyelashes. When he washes his hands, his wrong deeds fall
from them until they fall from beneath his fingernails. When he wipes
his head, his wrong deeds fall from it until they fall from his ears.
When he washes his feet, his wrong deeds fall from them until they fall
from beneath his toenails. Then his walking to the mosque and his
prayer give him extra reward." (Related by Malik, an-Nasa'i, Ibn Majah
and al-Hakim.)
4. Abu Hurairah also reported that the Messenger of Allah, upon whom be
peace, passed by a grave site and said, "Peace be upon you, O home of
believing people. Allah willing, we shall meet you soon, although I
wish I could see my brothers." They asked, "Are we not your brothers, O
Messenger of Allah?" He said, "You are my companions. My brothers are
the ones who will come after (us)." They said, "How will you know the
people of our nation who will come after you, O Messenger of Allah?" He
said, "If a man has a group of horses with white forelocks amidst a
group of horses with black forelocks, will he recognize his horses?"
They said, "Certainly, O Messenger of Allah." He said, "They (my
brothers) will come with white streaks from their ablutions, and I will
receive them at my cistern. But there will be some who will be driven
away from my cistern as a stray camel is driven away. I will call them
to come. It will be said, 'They changed matters after you,' then I will
say, 'Be off, be off."' (Related by Muslim.)
said, "Every action is based on the intention (behind it), and everyone
shall have what he intended..." (Related by "the group.")
This involves "pouring" or "running" water from the top of the forehead
to the bottom of the jaws, and from one ear to the other.
The elbows must be washed, for the Prophet, upon whom be peace, did so.
This means to wipe one's head with his hand. It is not sufficient just
to place the hand on the head or to touch the head with a wet finger.
The apparent meaning of the Qur'anic words, "...and wipe over your
heads..." does not imply that all of the head needs to be wiped. It has
been recorded that the Prophet used to wipe his head three different
ways:
1. Wiping all of his head. 'Abdullah ibn Zaid reported that the
Prophet, upon whom be peace, wiped his entire head with his hands. He
started with the front of his head, then moved to the back, and then
returned his hands to the front. (Related by "the group.").
2. Wiping over the turban only. Said 'Amru ibn Umayyah, "I saw the
Messenger of Allah, upon whom be peace, wipe over his turban and
shoes." (Related by Ahmad, al-Bukhari and Ibn Majah). Bilal reported
that the Prophet, upon whom be peace, said, "Wipe over your shoes and
head covering." (Related by Ahmad.) 'Umar once said, "May Allah not
purify the one who does not consider wiping over the turban to be
purifying." Many hadith have been related on this topic by al-Bukhari,
Muslim and others. Most of the scholars agree with them.
Wiping over the front portion of the scalp and the turban
Al-Mughirah ibn Shu'bah said that the Messenger of Allah, upon whom be
peace, made ablution and wiped over the front portion of his scalp, his
turban and his socks. (Related by Muslim.) There is, however, no strong
hadith that he wiped over part of his head, even though al-Ma'idah:
apparently implies it. It is also not sufficient just to wipe over
locks of hair that proceed from the head or along the sides of the head.
Needless to say, the preceding obligations are the ones that Allah has
mentioned in (al-Ma'idah 6).
This section deals with those acts connected with the ablution, but
which are not obligatory, as the Prophet, upon whom be peace, did not
rigorously stick to them or censure anyone for not doing them. They are
as follows:
There are some weak hadith that mention this act, and all of the chains
of these hadith point to the fact that there is some basis for this
act. In any case, it is a good act in and of itself and, in general, it
is part of the Islamic law.
This involves using a stick or similar object to clean one's teeth. The
best type to use is that of the arak tree found in the Hejaz. Such a
226
Using a toothbrush is liked at any time, but there are five times in
which it is especially liked:
1. ablution,
2. prayer,
5. when the taste in one's mouth has changed. Fasting and non-fasting
people may use it at the beginning, the end, or at any other time
during the day. 'Amr ibn Rabi'ah said, "I have seen the Messenger of
Allah, upon whom be peace, on countless occasions using a toothbrush
while fasting." (Related by Ahmad, Abu Dawud and at-Tirmizhi.)
It is part of the sunnah that one who has no teeth may use his fingers
to clean his mouth. Asked 'Aishah, "O Messenger of Allah, how should a
toothless person cleanse his mouth?" "By putting his fingers into his
mouth," he replied. (Related by at-Tabarani.)
This is based on the hadith of Aus ibn Aus al-Thaqafi who said, "I saw
the Messenger of Allah make ablution, and he washed his hands three
times." (Related by Ahmad and an-Nasa'i.) Abu Hurairah reported that
the Prophet, upon whom be peace, said, "When one of you rises from his
sleep, he should not put his hand into a pot until he has washed it
three times, for he does not know where his hand was (while he slept)."
(Related by "the group", al-Bukhari did not mention the number of
times.)
Laqit ibn Sabrah reported that the Prophet said, "When one performs
ablution, he should rinse his mouth." (Related by Abu Dawud and al-
Baihaqi.)
Abu Hurairah reported that the Prophet, upon whom be peace, said, "When
one of you performs ablution, he should sniff water up his nostrils and
then blow it out." (Related by al-Bukhari, Muslim and Abu Dawud.)
The sunnah is to put the water into the nostrils with the right hand
and blow it out with the left. 'Ali once called for water for ablution,
rinsed his mouth, sniffed up water into his nostrils and blew it out
with his left hand. He did that three times and then said, "That is how
the Prophet, upon whom be peace, would purify himself." (Related by
Ahmad and an-Nasa'i.)
This sunnah is fulfilled by putting water into the mouth and nostrils
in any way. The practice of the Prophet was to do both acts at the same
time. 'Abdullah ibn Zaid said, "The Prophet would rinse his mouth and
nose with just one hand (at one time, together). He did that three
times." In one narration it says, "He would rinse his mouth and nose
with three scoops of water." (Related by al-Bukhari and Muslim.) It is
also sunnah to be plentiful (with water) while performing this sunnah,
except if one is fasting. Laqit asked the Prophet, "Inform me about
your ablution." He replied, "Complete and perfect the ablution and (put
water) between your fingers. Use lots of water while sniffing it up
your nostrils, unless you are fasting." (Related by "the five." At-
Tirmizhi said it is sahih.)
'Aishah reported that the Messenger of Allah would run his fingers
through his beard. (Related by Ibn Majah and at-Tirmizhi, who
classified it as sahih.)
Anas said that when the Messenger of Allah performed ablution, he would
take a handful of water and put it under his jaws and pass it through
his beard. He said, "This is what my Lord, Allah, ordered me to do."
(Related by Abu Dawud, al-Baihaqi and al-Hakim.)
Ibn 'Abbas said that when the Messenger of Allah performed ablution, he
would run his fingers through his fingers and toes. (Related by "the
five," except Ahmad.) It is also related that it is preferable to
remove jewellery, for example, rings, bracelets, and so on, while
performing ablution. Even though these reports are not accepted as
228
fully authentic, one must follow them, for they fall under the general
category of completing and perfecting the ablution.
This is a sunnah that the Prophet, upon whom be peace, almost always
followed. If he acted otherwise, it was just to show that the other
acts are permissible. 'Amr ibn Shu'aib related on the authority of his
father from his grandfather who said: "A bedouin came to the Messenger
of Allah, upon whom be peace, and asked him about the ablution. He
showed him how to wash each part three times and said, 'This is the
ablution. Whoever does more than that has done wrong, transgressed and
committed evil." (Related by Ahmad, an-Nasa'i and Ibn Majah.) 'Uthman
also reported that the Messenger of Allah would repeat each washing
three times. (Related by Ahmad, Muslim and at-Tirmizhi.) It is also
proven that he performed each washing only once or twice. According to
most of the reports, he wiped his head only once.
Said 'Aishah, "The Messenger of Allah loved to begin with his right
side while putting on his shoes, straightening his hair and cleaning
(or purifying) himself." (Related by al-Bukhari and Musilm.) Abu
Hurairah reported that the Prophet said, "When you clothe or wash
yourself, begin with your right side." (Related by Ahmad, Abu Dawud,
at-Tirmizhi, and an-Nasa'i.)
This means to rub the hands over the bodily parts with water. 'Abdullah
ibn Zaid reported that the Messenger of Allah was brought a pot of
water which he used to perform ablution, and then rubbed his arms.
(Related by Ibn Khuzaimah.) He also related that the Messenger of Allah
performed ablution, then rubbed his limbs. (Related by Abu Dawud at-
Tayalisi, Ahmad, Ibn Hibban and Abu Ya'la.)
Each bodily part must be washed right after the other in the prescribed
sequence (without separating the washing of the different parts of acts
not related to the ablution). This is the customary practice of the
early and later generations of Muslims.
---------------------------------------------------
Section : Wiping the ears.
The sunnah is to wipe the interior of the ears with the index fingers
and the exterior portions with the thumbs. The water used to wipe the
head is also used for the ears, as the ears are part of the head. Al-
Miqdam ibn Ma'd Yakrih reported that the Prophet, upon whom be peace,
wiped his head and his ears, the interior and exterior, while making
ablution. He also put his finger inside his ear. (Related by Abu Dawud
and at-Tahawi.)
While describing the ablution of the Prophet, upon whom be peace, Ibn
'Umar said, "He wiped his head and ears with one wipe." (Related by
Ahmad and Abu Dawud.) In one narration it states, "He wiped the inner
portion of his ears with his index finger, and the outer portion with
his thumb."
Anas said, "The Prophet, upon whom be peace, used to perform ghusl (the
complete bathing) with a sa'a of water (1.616 cm) 3 to 5 madd (each 4
madd equals one sa'a). He also used to make ablution with one madd (404
cm) of water." (Related by al-Bukhari and Musim.) 'Ubaidullah ibn Abu
Yazid narrated that a man asked Ibn 'Abbas, "How much water is
sufficient for ghusl?" He answered, "One madd." "And how much is
sufficient for ghusl?" He said, "One sa'a." The man said, "That is not
sufficient for me." "Ibn 'Abbas said, "No? It was sufficient for one
better than you, the Messenger of Allah, upon whom be peace." (Related
by Ahmad, al-Bazaar and at-Tabarani in al-Kabeer. Its narrators are
trustworthy.) 'Abdullah ibn 'Umar narrated that the Messenger of Allah
passed by Sa'd while he was performing ablution and said, "What is this
extravagance, Sa'd?" He said, "Is there extravagance in the use of
water?" He said, "Yes, even if you are at a flowing river." (Related
by Ahmad and Ibn Majah with a weak chain.)
230
Says al-Bukhari, "The scholars do not like one to use water beyond what
the Prophet, upon whom be peace, used for ablution.
An-Nawawi holds that both meanings may be implied from the hadith.
'Umar reported that the Prophet, upon whom be peace, said, "If one
completes (and perfects) the ablution and then says, 'I testify that
there is no god except Allah, the One Who has no partner, and that
Muhammad is His slave and Messenger," the eight gates of paradise will
be opened for him and he may enter any of them that he wishes."
(Related by Muslim.)
Abu Sa'eed al-Khudri reported that the Prophet said, "Whoever makes
ablution and says, 'Glory be to Thee, O Allah, and the praise be to
Thee. I bear witness that there is no god except You. I beg Your
forgiveness and I repent unto you,' will have it written for him, and
placed on a tablet which will not be broken until the Day of
Resurrection. This hadith is related by at-Tabarani in al-Ausat. Its
narrators are of the sahih. An-Nasa'i has it with the wording. "It will
be stamped with a seal, placed below the throne, and it will not be
broken until the Day of Resurrection." The correct statement is that it
is mauqoof.
Abu Hurairah reported that the Messenger of Allah, upon whom be peace,
said to Bilal, "O Bilal, tell me what good deed you have done in Islam
that I hear the sound of your footsteps in Paradise?" Bilal said, "That
after I purify myself during the day or night, I pray with that
purification as much as Allah has destined for me." (Related by al-
Bukhari and Muslim.) 'Uqbah ibn 'Aamr related that the Messenger of
Allah, upon whom be peace, said, "If one performs and perfects his
ablution and prays two rak'ah with his heart and face (completely on
his prayer), Paradise becomes his." (Related by Muslim, Abu Dawud, Ibn
Majah and Ibn Khuzaimah in his Sahih.) Khumran, the client of 'Uthman,
added, "I saw 'Uthman call for water for ablution, pour it from the pot
onto his right hand and wash it three times. He then put his right hand
into the container, rinsed his mouth and nose and blew the water out.
Then he washed his face three times, followed by his arms up to the
elbows. Then he washed his feet three times and said 'I saw the
Messenger of Allah, upon whom be peace, make ablution like this.' And
then he would say, 'Whoever makes ablution like this and then prays two
rak'ah without having any other concern on his mind, all his past sins
will be forgiven." (Related by al-Bukhari, Muslim and others.)
Other practices (protecting the eyes and wrinkles, removing any rings,
wiping the neck, and so on) have not been mentioned here as their
narrations are still questionable. But, one may follow them as part of
general cleanliness.
It is not desirable that one who is making ablution should leave any of
the sunan that have just been mentioned. The person would then lose the
great reward of these (simple)acts. Anytime one abandons the sunnah, he
has done a disliked deed.
This would include urine, feces (Allah says, "...or one of you comes
from relieving himself," thus proving that such an act obligates a new
purification), and releasing gas from the anus. Abu Hurairah reported
that the Messenger of Allah said, "Allah does not accept the prayer of
a person who has released gas until he makes a new ablution. A person
from Hazhramaut asked Abu Hurairah, "What does releasing gas mean?" He
answered, "Wind with or without sound." (Related by al-Bukhari and
Muslim.) He also narrated that the Prophet said, "If one of you finds a
disturbance in his abdomen and is not certain if he has released any
gas or not, he should not leave the mosque unless he hears its sound or
smells its scent." (Related by Muslim.)
232
If the person did not keep his buttocks firmly seated on the floor
while sleeping, he must make a new ablution. Safwan ibn 'Asal said,
"The Prophet, upon whom be peace, used to order us while we were
travelling not to take our socks off unless we were in post-sex
impurity (i.e. not for defecation, urination or sleep)." (Related by
Ahmad, an-Nasa'i and at-Tirmizhi, who graded it sahih.) If one's
buttocks has remained firmly on the floor during his sleep, no new
ablution is necessary. This is implied by the hadith of Anas who said,
"The companions of the Prophet were waiting for the delayed night
prayer until their heads began nodding up and down (from drowsiness and
sleep). They would then pray without performing ablution." (Related by
ash-Shaifi, Muslim, Abu Dawud and at-Tirmizhi.) The wording that at-
Tirmizhi recorded from the chain of Shu'bah is, "I have seen the
companions of the Prophet sleeping to the extent that one could hear
some of them snoring. But, they would stand for prayer without a new
ablution." Said Ibn alMubarak, "In our opinion, this happened when they
were sitting."
Busrah bint Safwan narrated that the Prophet, upon whom be peace, said,
"Whoever touches his sexual organ cannot pray until he performs
ablution."
Said Ibn as-Sakin, "That hadith is from the best of what has been
related on this topic." Ash-Shaf'i related: "Any man who touches his
penis must perform ablution. Any women who touches her vagina must
perform ablution." Commenting on its authenticity, Ibn alQayyim quotes
al-Hazimi who says, "That chain is sahih." The Hanifiyyah are of the
opinion, based on the following hadith, that touching the sexual organ
does not nullify the ablution: "A man asked the Prophet if a man who
touches his penis has to perform ablution. Said the Prophet, upon whom
be peace, "No, it is just a part of you." (Related by "the five." Ibn
Hibban classified it as sahih, and Ibn al-Madini said, "It is better
than the hadith of Busrah.")
'Aishah related that the Messenger of Allah, upon whom be peace, kissed
her while he was fasting and said, "Kissing does not nullify the
ablution, nor does it break the fast." (Related by Ishaq ibn Rahawaih
and al-Bazzar with a good chain.)
Said al-Hassan, "The Muslims still prayed even while wounded." (Related
by al-Bukhari.) He also reported, "Ibn 'Umar squeezed a pimple until it
bled, but he did not renew his ablution. Ibn Abi 'Uqiyy spat blood and
continued his prayer. 'Umar ibn al-Khattab prayed while blood was
flowing from him. 'Ibbad ibn Bishr was hit with an arrow while praying,
but continued his prayers." (Related by Abu Dawud, Ibn Khuzaimah, and
al-Bukhari in mu 'allaq form.)
That this does not nullify the ablution was the opinion of the four
rightly guided caliphs, the companions and the following generation,
although there is an authentic hadith that states one should make
ablution after it.
Said Jabir ibn Sumrah, "A man asked the Prophet, 'Should we make
ablution after eating mutton?' He said, 'If you wish, make ablution. If
you do not, do not make ablution.' The man asked 'Should we make
ablution after eating camel meat?' He said, 'Yes."' Al-Barra' ibn
'Aazib related that someone asked the Prophet about praying in the dens
of camels, and he said, "Do not pray therein, for they are of the
devils." He asked about the dens of sheep, and he said, "Pray therein,
for they are blessings. (Related by Ahmad, Abu Dawud and Ibn Hibban.)
Ibn Khuzaimah said, "I know of no dispute over the authenticity of this
report." In summation, an-Nawawi can be quoted as saying, "This opinion
has the strongest proof, although the majority of the scholars differ
from it."
This does not nullify ablution, for there are no confirmed reports that
state such a thing.
This also does not require a new ablution, for the reports that say it
nullifies ablution are weak.
Abu Bakr ibn Muhammad related from his father on the authority of his
grandfather that the Prophet, upon whom be peace, sent a letter to the
people of Yemen which stated, "No one is to touch the Qur'an except one
who is purified."
Al-Muhajir ibn Qunfuzh related that he greeted the Prophet, upon whom
be peace, but that the latter did not return his salutation until he
had made ablution: "There is nothing that prevented me from responding
to you except that I do no like to mention the name of Allah unless I
am in a state of purity." Said Qatadah, "Because of this, al-Hassan
hated to recite the Qur'an or mention Allah's name unless he had
performed ablution. (Related by Amad, Abu Dawud, an-Nasa'i and Ibn
Majah.) Reported Abu Juhaim ibn al-Harith, "The Prophet, upon whom be
peace, met a person at the well of Jaml, who greeted him, but he did
not return his greeting until he had wiped his face and hands."
(Related by Ahmad, al-Bukhari, Muslim, Abu Dawud and an-Nasa'i.) This
action was one of preference, not of obligation. Mentioning the name of
Allah is permissible for the one who is in a state of purity, one who
has a minor impurity, a person in post-sex impurity, or one who is
standing, sitting, and so on. Said 'Aishah, "The Messenger of Allah
used to remember Allah at all times." (Related by "the five," except
for an-Nasa'i.) Al-Bukhari recorded it in mu'alliq form.) Reported
'Ali, "The Messenger of Allah would come from relieving himself, recite
to us and eat meat with us. Nothing would stop him from the Qur'an
except post-sex impurity." (Related by "the five." At-Tirmizhi and Ibn
as-Sakin categorized it as sahih.)
Al-Barra' ibn 'Aazib reported that the Messenger of Allah, upon whom be
peace, said, "When you go to your bed, perform ablution, lie on your
right side and then say, 'O Allah, I submit my soul to You, and I turn
my face to You. I entrust my affairs to You. I retreat unto You for
protection with hope and fear in You. There is no resort and no saviour
but You. I affirm my faith in Your books which You revealed and in Your
prophets you sent.' If you die during that night, you will be along the
237
natural path. Make it your final statement (of the night). He reported
that he repeated this supplication to the Prophet, upon whom be peace,
and he said, "...and Your messengers." The Prophet interjected,
"No,...'and the prophets You sent." (Related by Ahmad, al-Bukhari, and
at-Tirmizhi.) This also applies to one who is in post-sex impurity. Ibn
'Umar asked the Prophet, "O Messenger of Allah, can one of us sleep
while he is in post-sex impurity?" The Prophet answered, "Yes, if he
makes ablution." Reported 'Aishah, "When the Prophet, upon whom be
peace, wanted to sleep in a state of post-sex impurity, he would wash
his private parts and perform ablution." (Related by "the group.")
Said 'Aishah, "When the Prophet, upon whom be peace, was in a state of
impurity because of intercourse and wanted to eat or sleep, he would
perform ablution." 'Ammar ibn Yasar reported that the Prophet permitted
a person in post-sex impurity to eat, drink or sleep if he performed
ablution first. (Related by Ahmad and at-Tirmizhi, who classified it as
sahih.)
Abu Sa'eed reported that the Prophet, upon whom be peace, said, "If one
has intercourse with his wife and wants to repeat the act, he should
perform ablution." (Related by "the group," except for al-Bukhari. Ibn
Khuzaimah, Ibn Hibban and al-Hakim recorded it with the addition, "It
makes the return more vivacious.")
Said Ibrahim ibn 'Abdullah ibn Qarizh, "I passed by Abu Hurairah while
he was performing ablution and he said, 'Do you know why I am making
ablution? It is because I ate some yoghurt dried over a fire, for I
heard the Messenger of Allah say, 'Perform ablution before eating food
touched by fire." (Related by Ahmad, Muslim and "the four.")
'Aishah related that the Prophet, upon whom be peace, said, "Perform
ablution from whatever touches fire." (Related by Ahmad, Muslim, an-
238
Nasa'i and Ibn Majah.) This order is one of preference as the following
hadith makes clear: 'Amr ibn Umayyah azhZhamari said, "I saw the
Messenger of Allah, upon whom be peace, cutting a piece of a sheep's
shoulder and eating it. He was then called to prayer. He put the knife
down, prayed, and did not perform another ablution." (Related by al-
Bukhari and Muslim.)
Said Buraidah, "The Prophet, upon whom be peace, made ablution for
every prayer. On the day of the conquest of Makkah, he made ablution,
wiped over his socks and prayed a number of times with just one
ablution. 'Umar said to him, 'O Messenger of Allah, you did something
that you have not done (before).' He answered, 'I did it on purpose,
'Umar."' (Related by Ahmad, Muslim and others.)
Said Anas ibn Malik, "The Prophet, upon whom be peace, used to make
ablution for every prayer." He was asked, "And what did you people use
to do?" Malik said, "We prayed the prayers with one ablution unless we
nullified it." (Related by Ahmad and al-Bukhari.)
Ibn 'Umar reported that the Prophet, upon whom be peace, said, "Whoever
makes ablution while he is already in a state of purity will have ten
good deeds written for him." (Related by Abu Dawud, at-Tirmizhi, and
Ibn Majah.)
If the person who is making ablution has a doubt concerning how many
times he has washed a particular part of the body, he should go by the
number he is certain about.
One may use a towel to dry himself during any time of the year.
Wiping over the socks is part of the sunnah. An-Nawawi states, "All
those who qualify for ijma' (consensus) agree that it is allowed to
wipe over the socks--during travelling or at home, if needed or not--
even a woman who stays at home or a handicapped person who cannot walk
can do so. The Shi'ah and Khawarij reject it, but their rejection is
not valid. Says Ibn Hajr in Fath al-Bari, "All of the preservers (of
hadith) are of the opinion that wiping over the socks has come through
a continuous transmission. Some have collected all of its narrations
(from among the companions), and its number exceeds eighty. This
includes hadith from the ten people who were promised Paradise." The
strongest hadith on this point has been related by Ahmad, al-Bukhari,
Muslim, Abu Dawud and at-Tirmizhi on the authority of Hammam anNakha'i
who said, "Jarir ibn 'Abdullah urinated, performed ablution and wiped
over his socks." It was said to him, "You do that and you have
urinated?" He said, "Yes, I saw the Messenger of Allah, upon whom be
peace, urinate and then do likewise." Said Ibrahim, "They were amazed
at that hadith, because Jarir had embraced Islam after surah al-Ma'idah
was revealed (10 AH). One of its verses calls for washing one's feet.
This hadith helps us understand the verse by confining it to one who is
not wearing socks. This constitutes a particular case, and the person
who wears socks can just wipe over them.
It is allowed to wipe over slippers, as this has been related from many
companions. Says Abu Dawud, "Wiping over sandals (has been done by)
'Ali ibn Abu Talib, Ibn Mas'ud, al-Barra' ibn 'Aazib, Anas ibn Malik,
Abu Umamah, Sahl ibn Sa'd and 'Amr ibn Hareeth. It has also been
related from 'Umar ibn al-Khattab and Ibn 'Abbas." 'Ammar, Bilal ibn
'Abdullah ibn Abu Aufi and Ibn 'Umar also have hadith on this subject.
In Ibn alQayyim's Tahzhib as-Sunan, he relates from Ibn al-Munzhir,
"Ahmad made a statement about the permissibility of wiping over
slippers because of his fairness and justice. Nevertheless, the basis
of this permissibility is the practice of the companions and a manifest
analogy. There is no real difference between socks and slippers. It is
correct that they take the same ruling. Most scholars say that one can
wipe over either one." Those who permit it include Sufyan al-Thauri,
Ibn al-Mubarak, 'Ata, al-Hasan and Sa'eed ibn alMusayyab. Commenting on
this subject, Abu Yusuf and Muhammad said, "It is allowed to wipe over
them if they are thick and completely hide what they cover."
240
Abu Hanifah did not approve of wiping over thick slippers, but he
changed his mind three or seven days before his death. He wiped over
his slippers during his illness and said to his visitors, "I did what I
used to tell people not to do." Al-Mughirah ibn Shu'bah reported that
the Messenger of Allah, upon whom be peace, made ablution and wiped
over his socks and slippers. This is related by Ahmad, at-Tahawi, Ibn
Majah and at-Tirmizhi, who called it hassan sahih. Abu Dawud graded it
weak.2
One must have put his socks (or whatever covering he is using) while in
a state of purity.
Said al-Mughirah ibn Shu'bah, "I was with the Messenger of Allah, upon
whom be peace, one night during an expedition. I poured water for him
to make ablution. He washed his face and arms and wiped his head. Then
I went to remove his socks and he said, 'Leave them on, as I put them
on while I was in a state of purity,' and he just wiped over them."
(Related by Ahmad, al-Bukhari and Muslim).
Said al-Mughirah, "I saw the Messenger of Allah, upon whom be peace,
wipe over the top of his socks." (Related by Ahmad, Abu Dawud and at-
Tirmizhi, who called it hassan.) 'Ali observed, "If the religion was
based on opinion, the bottom of the sock would take preference in being
wiped to the top of the sock." (Related by Abu Dawud and ad-Daraqutni
with a hassan or sahih chain.) What is obligatory in the wiping is what
is meant by the lexicographical meaning of the word "wipe." There are
no specifications authentically mentioned with respect to the wiping.
For the resident, this period is one day and night. For the traveller,
it is three days and nights. Said Safwan ibn 'Assal, "We were ordered
(by the Prophet) to wipe over the socks if we were in a state of purity
when we put them on, for three days if we were travellers, and for one
day and night if we were residents. We did not remove them unless we
were in post-sex impurity." (Related by ash-Shafi, Ahmad, Ibn
Khuzaimah, at-Tirmizhi, and an-Nasa'i, who graded it sahih.)
Shuraih ibn Hani said, "I asked 'Aishah about wiping over socks and she
answered, 'For the traveller, three days and three nights; for the
resident, one day and night." This hadith is related by Ahmad, Muslim,
at-Tirmizhi, an-Nasa'i and Ibn Majah. Of its authenticity, al-Baihaqi
says, "This is the most authentic report on this topic." Some say that
the duration begins with the time of the wiping, while others say it
begins from the time of nullifying the ablution after wearing the socks.
After the person completes his ablution and puts on his socks or
slippers, it is proper for him to wipe over them later on when he wants
to perform ablution. He is permitted to do that for one day and night
if he is resident, and for three days and nights if he is a traveller.
But if he is in post-sex impurity, he must remove his socks, in
accordance with the preceding hadith of Safwan.
2. Post-sex impurity.
242
3. Removal of the socks. If (i) or (iii) occurs while the person was in
a state of purity, he need only wash his feet.
