INTRODUCTION The Ann Cooper Collection was accessioned into the Dunbar Librarys Special Collections and Archives on February 15, 1999. The collection was donated by Ann Cooper, a certified flight instructor and prolific author with over 600 published magazine articles to her credit. The materials in this collection date from the early 1900s through 2002. A number of books and journals were removed from the collection and placed within the Dunbar Librarys Special Collections and Archives catalogued book collection for ease of accessibility. A list of the books and journals removed is included in this finding aid. This is an excellent source of information on women aviators such as Jessie Woods, Patty Wagstaff, Edna Gardner Whyte, Nancy Hopkins Tier and Dorothy S. Lewis. Significant research on African American aviation, in particular the Tuskegee Airmen, is also included in this collection. There are no restrictions on the use of this collection. Related collections on the subject of women in aviation include: the Amy Johnson Collection (MS-177); the Jean Moreo Small Collection (SC-37); the Neil V. Loving Collection (MS-282); and the Bessie Coleman Collection (SC-75). BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH Ann L. Cooper (1934-) was born on April 10, 1934 in Baldwin, Long Island, New York. She has been a pilot for over 25 years, a certified flight instructor, and is a prolific author with over 600 published magazine articles to her credit. She as been an editor of Aero Brush, the journal of the American Society of Aviation Artists; Quarterly, a newsletter for the International Womens Air and Space Museum (IWASM); Ninety-Nines News, magazine of the International Women Pilots, the Ninety-Nines; contributing editor to Sports Pilot and is the author of four books: Rising Above It, Edna Gardner Whyte, An Autobiography; Out on the Wing: Jessie Woods and the Flying Aces Air Circus; Fire and Air, written by Patty Wagstaff; and Tuskegees Heros as featured in the aviation art of Roy E. LaGrone, co-written with her husband, Charles S. Cooper. Cooper is also a 1956 graduate of Connecticut College and completed postgraduate work at the Oregon Institute of Technology. She is married to USAF retired Major General Charles S. Cooper and has three children and four stepchildren. Cooper currently resides in Beavercreek, Ohio.

SCOPE AND CONTENT The Ann Cooper Collection is a rich combination of aviation history that focuses on women aviators, in particular Jessie Woods, Patty Wagstaff, Edna Gardner Whyte, and Nancy Hopkins Tier. In addition, it includes information on the contributions of African American aviation pioneers, especially the Tuskegee Airmen, the first all black fighter squadron that was established during World War II.

SERIES 1- JESSIE WOODS Jessie Woods was born on a farm in Ulysses, Kansas. At the age of 19, she married and became a member of the Flying Aces Air Circus, the longest running flying group in U.S. history. Woods learned to repair planes and engines, barnstorm, and skydive. She was best known for her ability as a wing-walker. This series contains correspondence, newspaper and magazine clippings, interview transcripts, autobiographical sketches, photographs, and various organizational materials collected by Ann Cooper as she wrote her biography of Woods. Also contained within the collection are a number of Woods artifacts, such as two of her flight jackets, which have aviation significance. Refer also to the oversize materials series of the collection (Series VII, Folder 1) for additional items. Subseries 1, interview transcripts, contains the transcripts of the various interviews Ann Cooper conducted with Jessie Woods. Topics covered within these interviews in clued Woods experiences as a member of the Flying Aces aerobatics flying team, her views on other pilots and on women aviators in general. The transcripts in this series are arranged alphabetically according to the subjects decided upon by Ann Cooper during her book writing process. The microcassettes that contain many of these interviews are contained in box 8. Subseries 2, autobiographical sketches, contains a number of handwritten autobiographical sketches written by Jessie Woods herself. Subseries 3, family bible information, contains a typed copy of the information found within the Woods family bible. This information includes birth, marriage, and death dates for family members. Subseries 4, correspondence, contains Woods correspondence to family, friends, and organizations from the 1920s to the 1990s. These folders within the subseries are listed alphabetically by the correspondents last name. The correspondence is listed chronologically within each folder and the miscellaneous correspondence folders are arranged in chronological order. Subseries 5, newspaper and magazine clippings, contain various clippings about Woods and also include other aviation-related and miscellaneous clippings collected by Woods. The clippings have been separated into the two categories of Woods related clippings, and miscellaneous clippings. These two categories have been arranged in chronological ord

Subseries 6, magazines and newsletters, includes magazines and newsletters collected by Woods, many of which include articles about her and other aviation topics. They are arranged alphabetically by magazine title. Subseries 7, organizational materials, includes newsletters, brochures, membership cards, pamphlets, and various other materials obtained by Woods during her membership in various aviation-related organizations. Materials for the Jessie Woods Space Camp Scholarship are also included in the series. The materials within the folders are arranged chronologically by publishing date and the folders are placed in the subseries alphabetically by the organizations name. Subseries 8, calendars, contains calendars ranging in date from 1987-1991. Woods recorded her day-to-day activities on these calendars and they are arranged chronologically within the subseries. Subseries 9, mail log, contains the mail log in which Woods recorded her correspondences from 1983-1988. Subseries 10, gift book, includes a gift book given to Woods by Martha Tweeten in 1926. Subseries 11, court summons and complaint contains a 1952 court summons and complaint against Jessie and James Woods. Subseries 12, James Woods, includes materials related to Jessie Woods husband, James. Materials within the subseries include his pilots log and license and personal correspondence. These items are arranged in chronological order. Subseries 13, photographs, contains family and aviation related subjects. Photographs are arranged alphabetically according to the subject given to them by Ann Cooper. Subseries 14, book production materials, contains materials pertaining to Ann Coopers biography of Woods life, On the Wing. Of particular interest in this series are Woods detailed descriptions of the photographs contained within the book and the handwritten notes taken by the author during her research. Items are arranged in alphabetic order according to format. Also of interest is a large book-signing poster contained within the oversized portion of this collection. Subseries 15, video, contains seven videocassettes featuring Jessie Woods as their main topic. They are numbered and arranged alphabetically by their title. Subseries 16, microcassettes, contains 20 microcassette tapes recorded by Ann Cooper during her research for her book about Woods. Most of the conversations on the tapes are interviews with Woods, although interviews with other people are also contained on the tapes. The tapes are arranged in envelopes, with similar subject interviews grouped together within the envelopes. The titles of the tapes are taken from the ID written on the cassettes by Ann Cooper. Transcripts of several of these microcassettes can be found in box 1, files 1-30.

Subseries 17, artifacts, contains a number of artifacts belonging to Woods during her lifetime. Materials include two flying jackets, a watch, handkerchief, and a framed and captioned photograph of Woods and Cooper together.

SERIES II- TUSKEGEE AIRMEN The Tuskegee Airmen were the first all-black fighter squadron to fight in World War II. They began with the 99th Fighter Squadron and eventually added three morethe 100th, 101st, and 102nd that together formed the 332nd Fighter Group. The 332nd is famed as an escort group that never lost a bomber to the enemy. This series consists primarily of all the background information and research used to publish the book Tuskegees Heroes. This book relates to the pre-WWII experiences of African American aviators, traces the origins of the Tuskegee Experiment, and the airmens role in World War II and examines the tradition that was established at Tuskegee. Subseries 1, book production and draft, is a collection of information relating to the book production and its draft. It consists of bibliographic notes, taped interviews (13 microcassettes) and transcripts of the Tuskegee pilots, publicity, etc. The layout of Tuskegees Heroes is contained in Box 16. Subseries 2, brochures and pamphlets, consists of miscellaneous brochures and pamphlets dealing with aviation history, the Tuskegee Airmen, and publication sources. Subseries 3, correspondence, includes correspondence to and from the Coopers, publishers, and Tuskegee Airmen. The correspondence deals primarily of exchanges between the Coopers and the key Tuskegee Airmen included in this book along with communications with the publishing house. All correspondence is filed chronologically. Subseries 4, magazines and newsletters, is a collection of aviation magazines and newsletters, such as Airman, Friends Journal, OX5 News, etc. The subseries is quite sporadic and not extensive run exists for any of the titles. Subseries 5, clippings-magazine and newspaper, consists of miscellaneous clippings from magazines and newspapers containing information on the newsworthy events of the Tuskegee Airmen during World War II. There are also other articles that detail important African American contributions to aviation history. All information contained within this series if filed chronologically. Subseries 6, Roy LaGrone, is devoted to Roy E. LaGrone consisting of biographical information on his life and an extensive collection of his artwork. Subseries 7, biographical notes/history, contains extensive biographical information on each of the featured Tuskegee Airmen. In particular, C. Alfred Anderson, Herbert E. Carter, Benjamin O. Davis, Sr., Noel F. Parrish, and Harold E. Sawyer.

Subseries 8, photographs/slides/negatives, contains a large collection of photographs, slides, and negatives of the Tuskegee Airmen. Also contains public presentations. Of particular interest are three folders of photographs form their experiences during WWII, as well as postWWII experiences. Subseries 9, videos, consists of two videos entitled Tuskegee Airman Tribute and Tuskegee Airman Exhibit Opening Day February 9, 1997 St. Petersburg Museum of History.

SERIES III- PATTY WAGSTAFF Patty Wagstaff was born in the USA to an Air Force family. Her family moved to Japan where her father flew 747s for Japan Airlines when she was nine years old. She acquired her education in Japan, Europe, and Australia. Wagstaff began her aviation career in Alaska in 1979. She possesses a commercial, multiengine, instrument, seaplane, and helicopter ratings. In addition, she also possesses multiengine and instrument instructor ratings. Patty is a three-time US National Aerobatic Champion, an IAC Champion, and six-time recipient of the Betty Skelton Award. She is primarily known for her appearances at airshows and competitions throughout North America and around the world. This series contains information and materials gathered by Ann Cooper while she was working on her 1997 biography of Wagstaff. Items contained within this series include correspondence, Patty Wagstaff Air Shows, Inc. information, newspaper and magazine clippings, photographs, and book production materials. Information about other air race personalities and organizations is included as well. Refer also to the oversize materials series of the collection (Series VII, Folder 2) for additional items. Subseries 1, correspondence, contains correspondence between Wagstaff and various recipients, such as Ann Cooper, her family, organizations, and the like. These folders within the subseries are listed alphabetically by the correspondents last name. The correspondence is listed chronologically within each folder and the miscellaneous correspondence folders are arranged in chronological order. Subseries 2, newspaper and magazine clippings, is comprised of a variety of newspaper and magazine articles written about Wagstaff and other related topics, such as air shows, planes, etc. The subseries is arranged in chronological order. Subseries 3, book excerpts, contains several photocopied portions of the books that refer to Wagstaff or air shows. Contained within this subseries are portions of a few of Wagstaffs favorite inspirational books. The subseries is arranged in alphabetical order by book title. Subseries 4, unpublished article drafts, contains copies of unpublished article manuscripts sent to Wagstaff by authors interested in writing about her life and career. The subseries is grouped by subject and then arranged in chronological order. Subseries 5, programs and brochures, features programs and brochures for a variety of events and places that Wagstaff either attended or has been involved in. This subseries is arranged alphabetically by item title.

Subseries 6, PWAS press sample binders, is comprised of 3 ring binders put together by Patty Wagstaff Air Shows, Inc. (PWAS). The binders include press clippings from around the world and highlight many of Wagstaffs accomplishments. The binders are arranged in chronological order. Subseries 7, magazines, newsletters, and newspapers, contains whole newspapers, magazines, that feature Wagstaff or are published by organizations to which she belongs. The items in this subseries are arranged alphabetically by title. Subseries 8, organization material, contains materials relating to Wagstaff-associated organizations. Most of the organizations are aviation-related. The materials are arranged alphabetically by organizational name. Subseries 9, competition materials, contains materials such as score sheets and informational materials from the various aerobatic competitions that Wagstaff has participated in. The materials in this series are arranged alphabetically by item title. Subseries 10, logbook entries, is comprised of Wagstaffs logbook and pilot entries from the 1980s and 1990s. The logbooks are arranged in chronological order. Subseries 11, Patty Wagstaffs writings, contains original material penned by Wagstaff. The items are arranged alphabetically by format of the item. Subseries 12, PWAS, Inc. contains a variety of materials, including press releases and promotional items, produced by Patty Wagstaff Air Shows, Inc. This subseries is arranged alphabetically by item format. Subseries 13, plane details, includes materials relating to the types of planes flown by Wagstaff. This subseries is arranged alphabetically by type of plane. Subseries 14, other air show performers, contains biographies of and ads for other popular air show artists that competed with and against Wagstaff. Files are arranged alphabetically by the artists last names. Subseries 15, NASM, feature materials pertaining to the Patty Wagstaff exhibit that was installed at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C. For photographs of the exhibit, refer to Box 23, File 9. The subseries is arranged alphabetically by the format of the items. Subseries 16, photographs, contains a large number of photographs taken of Wagstaff throughout her life. Many of the photographs contained within the subseries are featured in Wagstaffs biography. The photographs are arranged alphabetically by the subject given to the photographs by Ann Cooper, as well as chronologically.

Subseries 17, book production materials, contains receipts, author notes, source information, contracts, and a wide array of other material produced by Cooper during the process of compiling Wagstaffs biography. The items are arranged by the name given to the files by Ann Cooper. Subseries 18, videos, contains VHS tapes that feature Wagstaff, aerobatics, or serve as promotional for PWAS, Inc. The titles of the tapes are taken from the ID printed on the cassettes. The videos are arranged alphabetically. Subseries 19, audiocassettes, includes micro and full-size audio tape recordings made by Ann Cooper to record the interviews that she conducted while researching Wagstaffs life. The titles of the tapes are taken from the ID written on the cassettes by Ann Cooper. The tapes are grouped together by subject in an envelope and placed in alphabetical order.

SERIES IV- EDNA GARDNER WHYTE Edna Gardner White was born in November 1902 in Minnesota. In 1924 she became a registered nurse and entered the Navy Nurse Corps. She used her Navy earnings to pay for flying lessons and by 1928, she had earned her pilots license. Next, she became the first woman to obtain her instructors rating, which she used to open a flight school in New Orleans. During WWII, she obtained her instrument rating and helped train pilots for the war. After the war, she established Aero Enterprises, a flight training school for war veterans, and later opened Aero Valley Airport in Roanoke, Texas. This series contains a variety of materials gathered by Cooper during her research of the life of Whyte. Refer also to the oversize materials series of the collection (Series VIII, Folder 3) for additional items. Subseries 1, interview transcripts and oral histories, contains interviews and oral histories with Edna Gardner Whyte that were conducted by Cooper and others. The transcripts are arranged alphabetically by subject. Subseries 2, biographical sketches, contains a number of short (two or three pages) abstracts that detail the life of Whyte. The files within the subseries are arranged in chronological order. Subseries 3, correspondence, includes a wide variety of personal and organizational correspondences between Whyte and others, such as Cooper, friends, fans, and business associates. The correspondence is listed chronologically within each folder and the miscellaneous correspondence folders are arranged in chronological order. Subseries 4, newspaper and magazine clippings, contains a large number of clippings from national and regional magazines and newspapers that feature or are related to Whyte. The clippings are grouped by subject and arranged in chronological order. Subseries 5, magazines, contains complete issues of magazines, which contain articles about Whyte. The magazines are arranged alphabetically by title.

Subseries 6, organizational materials, contains a wide array of information regarding associations joined by Whyte. Subseries 7, programs, brochures, and guides, contain programs, brochures, and guides for a number of Whytes activities, including speaking engagements and award banquets. Materials within the subseries are arranged in chronological order. Subseries 8, cards and certificates, includes many of Whytes report and membership cards and pilot certification documents. The items within the series are arranged in chronological order. Subseries 9, self and business promotion, includes ads and booklets used by Whyte to promote herself as a pilot and flight instructor and to promote usage of her airport. The items are arranged alphabetically by item file. Subseries 10, lawsuit evidence, this subseries contains documents relating to Whytes lawsuit with the buyer of the Aero Valley Airport Subseries 11, charts and maps, includes regional maps and flight direction charts. Subseries 12, directories and mailing lists, includes address and organizational directories throughout her life. Subseries 13, postcards, contains a few blank postcards with aviation and nature themes. Subseries 14, receipts, includes receipts gathered by Whyte from various purchases. Subseries 15, quotes and jokes, contains a number of quotations and jokes collected by Whyte throughout her life. Subseries 16, miscellaneous aviation topics, containing various research files on topics or persons that relate to Whyte. The files within the series are arranged alphabetically by topic or individuals last name. Subseries 17, speeches, contains notes and outlines for speeches given by Whyte on various topics during several occasions. The speeches are arranged in the chronological order they were written. Subseries 18, screenplay, is a copy of a screenplay, On My Own, written by Dena B. Yancy. It is based on the biography of Whytes life written by Ann Cooper. Subseries 19, photographs, contains several photographs of Whyte and her family, friends, and associates. The photographs cover several years and are arranged according to the original order they were found when they came into the archives. Their corresponding negatives

accompany the photos. The photographs are grouped together by subject and arranged in alphabetical order. Subseries 20, book production material, contains materials that were produced by Cooper during the writing of Whytes biography. Included are contracts, notes, source information, and promotional items. The items are arranged in alphabetical order by item format. Subseries 21, videos, is comprised of one video recording that features Whyte. The title of the tape is taken from the ID written on the video. Subseries 22, audiocassettes, contains full-sized and microcassette recordings of interviews conduced with Whyte with Cooper. The titles of the tapes are taken from the ID written on the cassettes by Cooper. The tapes are grouped together by subject in an envelope and placed into alphabetical order.

SERIES V- NANCY HOPKINS TIER Nancy Hopkins Tier was born in 1909 in Washington, D.C. into an accomplished family. One of her uncles was Dr. Johns Hopkins, of medical and university fame, and another, Charles Dana Gibson, was the famed illustrator and creator of the Gibson Girl. Her aunt, Viscountess Nancy Astor, was the first woman to sit on the British Parliament. Tier learned to fly at the age of 19 and earned her commercial pilots license in 1931. She married her husband, Irving V. Tier that same year and the couple raised three children. She joined the Civil Air Patrol (CAP) in 1942 and served for over 18 years, becoming the first female CAP Wing Commander. She also earned several other awards and titles as a frequent air race competitor. This series contains information relating to Nancy Hopkins Tier and was primarily gathered by Cooper while researching Tier in order to write Tiers biography. Items included are photographs, correspondence, and detailed research on related topics, such as the Civil Air Patrol. Subseries 14, book production, features documents such as receipts, drafts, and notes that were produced or collected by Cooper during the publication of Tiers biography. The files are arranged alphabetically by item format. Subseries 15, National Air Tour, contains a booklet that describes the National Air Tour. Subseries 16, Civil Air Patrol (CAP), includes a variety of materials relating to the CAP and Tiers participation within the programs. Items included are booklets, informational and promotional brochures, and articles. Also of interest is the book Flying Minute Men by Robert E. Neprude, which came in with the collection and is located within the archives catalogued stacks. Subseries 17, audiocassettes, contains full-size audiocassettes and microcassette of Ann Coopers interviews with Tier. The titles of the tapes are taken from the ID written on the cassettes by Cooper. The tapes are grouped together by subject in an envelope and placed into alphabetical order.

Subseries 9, photographs, includes a number of photos of the Cooper family as well as Coopers friends and associates. The photographs are grouped by topic and placed in alphabetical, then chronological order. Subseries 10, videos, contains numerous videocassettes on an array of aviation topics. The titles of the tapes are taken from the ID found on the tape labels. The tapes are arranged alphabetically by title. Subseries 11, transparencies, includes large-size slides intended for use on an overhead projector. The subject of most of the transparencies is airplane and flight controls and they are intended for pilot training sessions.

Subseries 12, pilot material, contains several volumes of the flight prep system designed to train pilots. Each volume concentrates on a specific issue of flying and contains three cassette tapes and two roles of film. Also contains material relevant to Anne as a pilot, including testing, training, certification, maps and instruments. Subseries 13, framed artwork, contains a framed print and a pin commemorating the release of the Harriet Quimby U.S. Stamp.

SERIES VII- DOROTHY S. LEWIS Subseries 1, Photographs and Negatives, features 35 mm photographs and negatives on a variety of topics. Subseries 2, Correspondence, includes letters written both by and to Dorothy S. Lewis. Subseries 3, Interview Transcriptions, consists of printed copies of the texts of Lewis interviews. Subseries 4, Audio Recordings, contains the actual interview tapes. Subseries 5, Sketches, features drawings made by Dot S. Lewis. Subseries 6, Newspaper and Magazine Clippings, consists of copies of various published articles about Lewis. Subseries 7, contains actual Magazines and Newsletters mentioning Dot S. SERIES VIII- OVERSIZE MATERIALS This series includes a number of items that are located in the oversize section of the archives. The oversize collection is arranged by topic. Subseries 1, Jessie Woods, contains posters promoting the flying circus that Woods was a performer in as well as a promotional ad for a competing traveling air circus. Also found within this series is promotional posters for Ann Coopers biography of Woods. SERIES IX- REFERENCE MATERIALS This series contains an extensive collection of a variety of different forms of reference material, collected and utilized by Ann Cooper while researching and writing many of her magazine articles and books. This series also includes information and reference material collected and utilized by Cooper in relation to her involvement in several aviation clubs, groups, and organizations. Subseries 1, documents, contains newspaper and magazine articles, photographs, manuals, fact sheets, etc. relating to a wide variety of aviation topics, including Coopers involvement with aviation-related organizations. The folders are arranged alphabetically, reflecting the donors original filing system. Subseries 2, audiocassettes, contains microcassettes of interview compiled by Cooper through her research of her subjects for articles and books, as well as interviews conducted at aviation events. The tapes are identified by the labels given to them by the author; many are unidentified. Subseries 3, slides, contains many slides acquired by Ann Cooper, many of which are slides of aircraft.
