WE CAN MAKE IT TOGETHER

The purpose of the quad city ostomy association: To provide pre-operation information to prospective ostomates and to assist in postoperative rehabilitation of new ostomates. To encourage and maintain an exchange of ideas between all ostomates. To conduct visitor training programs and other educational programs for the benefit of all ostomates and their families. To enhance the general publics knowledge and understanding of ostomies. To facilitate the visitor program which coordinates visits to new ostomates, by a trained ostomate from the ostomy association. To keep our membership up to date on new ostomy products and techniques To provide reassurance and caring emotional support to ostomates and their families.

What is an ostomy? An ostomy is a type of surgery performed when a person has lost the normal function of their bowel or bladder due to a birth defect, disease, injury or other disorder. Such surgeries include: colostomy, ileostomy, continent ileostomy and urinary ostomy. The ostomy allows normal body wastes to be expelled through a surgical opening in the abdominal wall. Ostomates must wear special pouches over the surgical opening. Why an ostomy chapter?

Ostomy chapters are self-help support groups that promote rehabilitation (physical, emotional or social) for those who have had or will have ostomy surgery. Approximately one out of every 200 people is an ostomate. Most ostomates go unrecognized because they can lead normal, productive lives and there is no evidence of their ostomy when they are dressed. To the new ostomate and their families an ostomy seems strange, inconvenient and sometimes frightening. Others who have had the same experiences, feelings and problems can provide reassurance and assistance in handling them. Active, well-adjusted ostomates can show a new ostomate that they too can resume a normal life. All members can learn about new ostomy products and techniques, as well as enjoy the satisfaction of helping others.
