ACADEMIC PLUMBING
PART ONE - GENERAL 1.1 DESCRIPTION

Furnish all labor, materials, tools and equipment and install complete and in place, all the plumbing systems as shown on the Drawings: specified herein, and as required for a complete and operable installation. Provide plumbing rough-in as required for the equipment to be furnished my the Owner and fixtures and equipment specified in other Sections. The final plumbing connections shall be included as a part of this Section. 1.2 QUALITY ASSURANCE Conform to provisions Section 15050. 1.3 JOB CONDITIONS Conform to provisions Section 15050. 1.4 PRODUCT HANDLING Conform to provisions in Section 15050.

2.2.1 (a)

General: Fixtures specified shall be furnished and installed complete with all trim and fittings. The manufacturers' names, item numbers, or trade names hereinafter given are used to indicate general design only and are not restrictive. (1) Items by other manufacturers of similar design and of equal overall quality may be submitted for approval. Sizes, capacities, dimensions, etc., designated are minimum requirements.

Stops for water supplies shall for each fixture and equipment be furnished and installed supplied with water. Exposed piping connections to the fixture plated brass pipe or chrome-plated copper shall be chrome- tubing. All exposed fixture trim and fittings shall be chrome- plated or nickel-plated with polished bright surfaces. Penetrations through walls or floors for rough-in of fixtures shall be made watertight by means of calking or casketing. Polished chrome-plated escutcheons shall be furnished and installed for exposed piping at every penetration inside finished rooms. For others see Section 15050. ''P-traps'' shall have a minimum 50 mm seal. Mounting heights of fixture rims shall be as designated on architectural drawings. Faucets shall have a sealed-in leak proof fatherless ceramic disc cartridge valve unit with removable cartridge: nonmetallic disc and lifetime lubricated stem threads. Faucet shall have single handle shall be r polished chrome plated or die cast material inserts. Traps exposed above the floor shall be chrome plated adjustable brass code pattern P-traps, with chrome plated wall escutcheon and casing. Plumbing fixtures supports shall be floor or wall mounted. Base supports shall be cast iron or steel with enamel paint

coating. Concealed arm assemblies shall have radium or zinc electroplated coating. Exposed arm assemblies shall be acidresistant porcelain enamel. (l) (m) All tubing for waste and water supplies to plumbing fixtures shall. be installed complete, length and size as required. Water supplies not otherwise specified herein for plumbing fixtures and/or equipment furnished under other sections shall be chromium plated brass or bronze and as follows: Wheel handle supply angle stop valve with 12 mm riser: a. 12 mm inlet, 305 mm long, wall flange, 12 mm x 12 mm warm handle angle stop, 12 mm flexible riser. b. 12 mm inlet, 305 mm long wall flange, 12 mm x 12 mm loose key angle stop, 12 mm flexible riser. (o) Flow devices shall have a flow rate of 5.5 lpm for all faucets for lavatories and sinks. Unit shall provide a nonaerated, coherent stream (laminar flow) of water when installed in the spout end. Unit shall be vandalproof. P1: Water Closet - Western: (a) Fixture: Vitreous china, siphon jet action, 80 mm passageway, elongated bowl, wall mounted, 40 mm top spud, length 65.4 CEO, height as shown on the Drawings, provided with douche and douche control valve. Carrier: Left handy right hand or double cast-iron fixture support anchored to floor behind wall, no hub fitting connections. Seat: Solid plastic: elongated open front seat with check hinge, no cover. Color: As selected by Consultant.

Provision: Each stall shall have a 20 mm water supply a 20 mm self-closing hose bibb located 76 cm from the back wall and 20 cm above the floor along the side of water closet as shown on the Drawings. Bell and Gossett Series bills, or equal, all bronze, gpm and TDH and electric motor as indicated on the Drawings. Unit shall be manually controlled. 2.2.33 Electric Water Heater:

Provide a completely factory assembled, wired and tested electric water heater of sizes and capacities as shown on the Drawings. Unit shall be Rheem Model No. EG Series or approved equal. Tank shall be extra heavy steel constructions glass-lined interior and provided with magnesium anode rated 1,050 kpa working pressure. Heater shall be equipped with water inlet and outlet connections, pressure and temperature relief valve, adjustable thermostatic controls with maximum 7OOC high limit cutoff, low water cutoff and heater drain. 2.3 2.3.1 (a) (b) CLEANOUTS General: Install cleanouts where required by the Uniform Plumbing Code and as indicated on the Drawings. All cleanouts shall be made accessible by installing as follows: (1) (2) (c) (d) Within one meter of a ceiling access panel; or Extending to floor or grade above; or in wall with removable access door.

Size of cleanouts shall be same as pipe on which it has been installed, up to 100 mm maximum. Cleanouts in cast iron soil pipe shall have an iron body, enamel-paint coated, with extra-heavy bronze plugs screwed into calking ferrules. Closure plug shall be extra-heavy type with slot to receive a 15 mm bar stock and taper thread closure. Cleanout plates in toilet rooms and laboratories shall be chromium-plated brass or stainless steel, satin finish. Cleanouts in steel pipe shall have extra heavy bronze plugs with square or hexagonal boss for wrench, recessed if in floor.

Flush with wall type for cast iron pipe: Extra-heavy cast iron cleanest tee with secured chrome plated cover and frame. THERMOSTATIC MIXING VALVE

Powers Model No. 131-0746 consisting of mixing valve, dial thermostatic (0-900C), piping kit and shut-off valves. Unit shall be cast bronze in construction. 2.5 BACKFLOW PREVENTERS

2.5.1 General: Plumbing fixtures, faucets with hose connections, and all other equipment having plumbing connections shall have their water supplies protected against all possible backsiphonage by vacuum breakers. Provide approved backflow prevention device as specified with equipment or subsystems such as irrigation or contaminating service or required by the Plumbing Code. 2.5.2 Reduced Pressure Type: Beeco No. 6, 10, or 12 units or equal: to be equipped with double gate valves, test cocks and drain. Drain shall be piped to nearest floor sink or to grade outside of building. 2.5.3 Pressure and Temperature Relief Valve: ASME rated and labeled for 875 kpa and 870C to 980c. 2.6 WATER HAMMER ARRESTER

Water hammer arresters shall be Smith Hydrotol or equal, stainless steel water hammer arresters models 5005 to 5050 as approved by the Plumbing Drainage Institute ''Standard P.D.I. WH-201''. 2.7 FLEXIBLE PIPE CONNECTION

2.7.1 When required at all motor operated equipment, provide flexible connections as hereinafter specified. (a) Flexible connections for steel piping shall be Anaconda Co. or equal, corrugated steel with galvanized wire braid or shall be corrugated stainless steel with stain- less steel wire braid. Designation and length shall be as recommended by the equipment manufacturer for conditions applicable during the systems test and under the most adverse operating pressure and temperatures. 2.8

2.8.1 General: Provide an automatic water for the sheet water system where required. The unit shall have a capacity as indicated on the Drawings. 2.8.2 Softener tank shall be heavy gauge, hot-dip galvanized steel construction for 100-psig working pressure. Pride access opening in side shell and supports with adjustable floor flanges. The softener shall be equipped with self-contained hydraulically operated valve for automatic operation. 2.8.3 Brine tank shall be fiberglass reinforced plastic construction with cover. Brine valves shall be corrosion resistant plastic. 2.8.4 Controls: Provide a 7-day clock timer for fully automatic regeneration operation. Provide a switch for manual regeneration and manual indexing valve so regeneration can be performed without electric power. 2.9 DIESEL FUEL SUPPLY SYSTEM

2.9.1 General: Furnish and install all pipes, fittings, valves, underground storage tanks, day tanks, and appurtenances, to provide a complete and workable diesel fuel supply system in accordance with this Section of this Specification and applicable drawings. 2.9.2 Examine all Sections of the Specifications for work related to this section. Provide all work hereunder as required for the support and accommodation of related work.

2.9.3 Coatings for exposed diesel fuel lines shall conform provisions of Section 15050. 2.9.4 Piping Assembly: All bolts, nuts and studs used in the assembly of the diesel fuel supply system shall conform to the provisions of Section 15050. 2.9.5 Piping Support: All exposed piping shall be adequately supported with devices of appropriate design. Support for all piping shall be complete and adequate regardless of whether or not support devices are specifically called for on the Drawings. Fabrication of steel support and welding shall conform to the provisions of Section 15050. 2.9.6 Anchoring Pipe Support: Pipe support shall be anchored in walls and floors as specified and shall conform to the provisions of Section 15050. 2.9.7 Materials and Installations:

2.9.7.1 Piping: Furnish Schedule 40 black steel pipe with 150 pound black banded malleable iron screwed fittings and couplings. 2.9.7.2 Valves: Acceptable gate valves are as follows: Manufacturer Crane Walworth Jenkins Hammond Gate No. 438 4 370 645

2.9.7.3 For all underground piping, trench and backfill shall be in accordance with Section 15050. Lay pipe on flat bottom of trench. Wrap all buried pipe and fittings with cold applied coal tar paper and primer. Tape and primer shall be Tape Coat CT, or approved equal. 2.9.7.4 Where piping passes through the flooring of the building, provide and approved waterproof membrane between pipe and concrete floor. 2.9.7.5 Piping inside at the building shall be located along walls at the floor elevation, in accordance with standard practice. 2.9.8 Underground Storage Tank and Appurtenances:

2.9.8.1 The diesel fuel storage tank shall be fabricated as a cylindrical tank with size and capacity as indicated in the Drawings.

2.9.8.2 The storage tank shall be constructed of steel plate with steel bulkheads in accordance with NFPA and ASME standards. Tanks shall have coal-tar exterior coating wrapped with fiber- glass truth and additional coal-tar coating for a total thickness of not less than 12 mm for corrosion control. 2.9.8.3 The storage tank shall be fabricated with openings and two lifting lugs as shown on the Drawings. 2.9.8.4 The storage tank and the following appurtenances shall be completely prefabricated and delivered to the jobsite ready for installation. (a) (b) Manholed fill cap, and adaptor, shall be Buckeye Models A0717-008 (717C), A-0049(3), and A-0050(3''). Manhole, angle valve extractor assembly: and foot valve: shall be Buckeye Models A-0655(l-1/2''), A-07l7-008(717C), A0584(3), and A0439(l-l/2'').

2.9.8.5 Furnish and install cap by Buckeye, Model No.A4103-004 (4103S) on 2. vent line as shown on the Drawings. 2.9.8.6 The underground reinforced concrete pad shall be constructed per provision of Sections 03200 and 03310. 2.9.9 Day Tank and Appurtenances:

2.9.9.1 Furnish and install day tank assembly for diesel generator or sizes and capacities as indicated on the Drawings. The day tank assembly shall be a pre-wired, pre-assembled package unit as manufactured by the Simplex Inc. or approved equal. Air Dryer: Self-contained, refrigerated type, complete with heat exchanger, refrigeration system, moisture separator for moisture removal, automatic controls and all internal wiring and piping. Heat exchanger shall be designed to ensure adequate cooling capacity for varying airflow loads without causing excessive refrigeration cycling. Controls shall automatically shut down refrigeration system on low or no load conditions. 2.11.1 Provide vacuum pump unit sizes as indicated on the Drawings as manufactured by the Nash Engineering Company, or equal. 2.12.1 General: Furnish and install factory-packaged, tested and painted underground liquefied petroleum storage tank assembly of sizes and capacities as shown on the Drawings. Tanks shall be constructed in accordance with NFPA and ASME/API Pressure Vessel Standards. Tanks shall be inspected and tested for compliance. Tanks shall have coal-tar exterior coating wrapped with fiberglass cloth and additional coal-tar coating for a total thickness of not less than 12 mm for corrosion control. The prefabricated storage tank assembly shall be as manufactured by Roy E. Black steel pipe for installation below ground shall be shop-coated and double-wrapped to a point of 15 cm above the ground by an approved pipe applicator, Hunts Process No 13 or equal as per AWWA-C203, Section AI-4. 2.13 DISTILLED WATER SYSTEM

2.13.1 General: Provide a stainless steel fully automatic electric distilled water station consisting of a still and tank mounted on a common floorstand with the still elevated to proper height for gravity flow of distilled water into the storage tank as manufactured by the American Sterilizer Co., or equal, for the laboratory facilities. The unit shall be American Sterilizer Model No. AF02-551-443-010 and Model No. AG18222310-20 with capacities as indicated on Drawings. 2.13.2 (a) Water still shall include the following: Self-starting, self-stopping, and self-flushing controls. Provide automatic controls to replenish the storage tank automatically. The controls shall start the still operation when level in storage is low and stop the still when the tank is full. When the still is stopped, the evaporator shall automatically flush sediment. A flushing timer shall be provided such that the evaporating chamber is drained once every four hours to prevent concentration of impurities. Provide manual bypasses to ensure uninterrupted service to all automatic valves. Provide automatic low water cutoff protection to protect system against raw water supply failure. Provide level switch to shut off system automatically if water level in evaporator drops below operating point.

2.13.3 Storage tank shall be equipped with air filter for filtering out all airborne particulates down to 0.2 of a micron. Provide overflow device, sight gauge, tank inlet and outlet drains, sample cock, and float control device. 2.13.4 Floor Stand: Construct of stainless steel and equip with adjustable floor flanges.

2.14 Duplex Sewage Ejector Station: Furnish and install base plate mounted duplex sewage ejector station of sizes and capacities as shown on the Drawings. The screenless nonclog ejector shall be equipped with cast iron impeller, stainless steel shaft, cast iron motor support and discharge pipe. The fully automatic system shall include pedestal mounted automatic alternator, high water alarm with transformer and wall mounted NEMA I control panel containing two magnetic starters and two fusible disconnect switches. Furnish steel cover plate with steel curb frame suitable for grouting into a concrete sump of sizes as shown on the Drawings. 2.15 Duplex Sump Pump Station: Same as duplex sewage ejector station except that sump pump shall be equipped with galvanized steel strainer, and high water alarm without transformer. 2.16 Duplex Submersible Type Sump Pump Station: Furnish and install submersible type duplex sump pump station of size and capacity as shown on the Drawing. The pump shall have a gray iron volute, gray iron impeller with fused epoxy coating and suction strainer. The fully automatic system shall include one NEMA I wall mounted control panel containing two magnetic starters, two fusible disconnect switches, one electrical alternator and one 100 mm alarm bell. Provide four mercury float switches with support pole and wall bracket. Furnish steel cover plate with steel curb frame suitable for grouting into a concrete sump of size shown on the Drawing. 2.17 Clarifier: Provide 3-compartmetn 5,675 liters capacity, precise concrete clarifier for acid waste neutralizing sump, 3.00 mm long x 1.95 m wide x 1.85 m high. Line tank with heavy acid resistant epoxy coating and fill with marble or limestone chips. Provide a 60 cm square sampling box at the sump discharge.

PART THREE EXECUTION 3.1 INSPECTION

Examine the areas and conditions under which work of this Section will be performed. Correct conditions detrimental to the proper

3.2.1.2 Avoid interference with structure and the work of other trades. Do not make changes from Drawings without approval of the Engineer. 3.2.2 Inspection: Check each piece of equipment in the system for defects, verifying that all parts are properly furnished and installed. 3.2.3 (a) Plumbing Fixture and Equipment Installation: Each fixture, or other plumbing item shall be installed at the exact height and location shown on the Drawings, or, in the absence of such drawings, in accordance with the reviewed manufacturers rough-in drawings. Fixture supplies, trap and trap arm shall be securely anchored and set squarely with wall, in line with fixture outlets, without any off-sets, angels or bends. Fixture connections shall be properly aligned to prevent any undue strain on equipment or fixture. Each fixture shall be set level and in continuous contact with floor or wall. Fixtures in batteries shall be aligned, equally spaced and present a uniform appearance. Joint between fixture and walls or floors shall be adequately grouted with Medusa, or equal, cement forming a smooth, even, watertight joint. Porcelain plaster caps shall be securely cemented into place over floor or wall flange bolts, entirely covering washer and bolt hole. Connections between fixtures and flanges on soil pipe shall be made absolutely gastight and watertight with a closet-setting compound, or with a neoprene gasket and seal.

Mounting bolts shall be brass, shall be not less than 6.35 mm diameter, and shall be equipped with chrome-plated nuts and washers. Fixtures with outlet flanges shall be set the proper distance from the floor or wall in order to make a first class joint with the closet-setting compound or gasket and the fixture. Fixtures shall be sealed with the gasket furnished by the fixture manufacturer. Exposed plated, polished, or enameled connections from fixtures shall be installed with special care showing no tool marks or threads. Supports shall be provided with each fixture.

3.2.4 Cleanout covers, set flush with finished wall, floor or grade, securely anchored by means of integral lugs or bolts. Perform all trenching, filling, and backfilling required for the work of this Section as specified herein and in Section 02220. 3.4 SERVICE CONNECTIONS

Determine exact location of required water, and sewer connections and make proper connections. 3.5 FLUSHING AND DISINFECTING

3.5.1 General: All water piping (both raw and sweet) shall be flushed clean of all dirt and foreign material following completion of the hydrostatic and leakage tests, and then be disinfected. The disinfection shall conform to AWWA C601 as minimum requirement. All valves, faucets and hose bibs shall be opened and closed at 30-minute intervals during disinfection period. The final flushing after disinfection shall be continued until the residual chlorine is reduced to less than 1.0 mg/liter.

3.5.2 Water Equipment, and Supplies: Provide all equipment and supplies for performing the work and discard the water at locations or by procedures acceptable to the Engineer. Furnish and fit any special pipe taps required for injecting the sterilizing solution. 3.5.3 Water System Sterilization: Biological and residual chlorine tests shall be done by an acceptable laboratory. Sterilization shall be repeated until satisfactory test results are achieved. 3.6 PAINTING

3.6.1 Finish Painting: Refer to Section 09900 for all finish painting other than for items specified to be factory finished. 3.6.2 (a) Protective Painting: Provide all protective painting. All pumps, motors, etc. with factory enamel finish, shall be carefully cleaned, oiled, and rubbed down before final acceptance. All damaged factoryfinished items shall be touched up with original paint. In unfinished spaces, al accessible installed black steel and wrought iron piping including fittings, unions and flanges, iron valves, hanger rods and hangers, shall be given a coat of rust preventive black asphaltum paint immediately upon installation. Prime coat all carbon steel in all finished rooms. All primer paint and surface preparation shall be as specified in Section 09900.
