Effective at noon on Thursday, Aug. 1, all campfires will be prohibited across the Kamloops Fire Centre, to help prevent human-caused wildfires. The fire danger rating is currently high throughout the Kamloops Fire Centre, with scattered pockets of extreme. With the current trend of warm & dry weather, wildfires in the region have displayed aggressive behaviour and have required additional fire suppression resources. Human-caused wildfires can divert critical resources and crews from responding to naturally occurring wildfires. The prohibition does not apply to cooking stoves that use gas, propane or briquettes, or to a portable campfire apparatus with a CSA or ULC rating that uses briquettes, liquid or gaseous fuel, as long as the height of the flame is less than 15cm. Anyone found in violation of an open fire ban, including campfires, may be issued a ticket for up to $345. Anyone who causes a wildfire through arson or recklessness may be fined up to $1 million, spend up to 3 years in prison and be held accountable for associated firefighting costs. For the latest info on current wildfire activity, burning restrictions, road closures and air quality advisories, go to www.bcwildfire.ca The cool new festival starts Friday, Aug 2 through Monday, Aug 5, at the Active Mountain festival site south of town. Tickets are $220 for the 4-day event, available locally at Country Bug Books and www.basscoast.ca. No one under 19 years old can attend, no booze, no drugs. Electronic music, community, and creative innovation is at the core of the festival. The culture is expressed by a creative community of artists, scientists, designers, yogis, environmentalists, freedom fighters, business minds, intellectuals, party-goers, poets and dancers. Organizers say tickets may sell out, as Bass Coast is boutique event and capacity will be capped at 4000 to ensure an intimate and quality experience for everyone.

Councillor C explained he has not been an Arts Council director since last fall & the Cultural Mapping project is a City-initiated project not an arts council project, the NVCAC having been requested by the City to champion the project. Councillor N said that while she is a member of the Arts Council, she has never been a director or involved in their decision-making process. So while more than 6 months have elapsed since the decision for the $9500 & 18 months since the decision for the $5000, it seems to finally be going through. Meanwhile, the Arts Council has been moving forward on the project in good faith, despite the delay even if at issue was the possibility that the funds be awarded to an outside agency to perform the same work.
