A Clara City car through and through

By Laura Kay Prosser The blue car shined on Thursday night, its fins proudly displayed as the Clara City Car Show rolled into town. A Clara City car bought and sold right here in Clara City, the 1960 two-door, hardtop, Plymouth Fury known affectionately as Donnie Reiners car sat in Donners parking lot and let people admire its glory. Its the kind of car I learned to drive in, John Donner, owner of the car, said. My uncle had a 1959 Plymouth and my dad a 1958 Dodge. John Donner always had an interest in cars, and that car in particular hed been drooling over since high school. I asked Donnie if he was ever interested in selling it, Donner said. He said, If my kids dont want it then its yours. The car was the only vehicle the Reiners had, it was the family car and saw a lot of use. For 20 years Reiners owned the car, and as a high school student working at the local garage, Donner was in charge of washing the car when brought in. He used to say, make sure you spray underneath and get all the salt off, so its not all rusted when you get it, Donner said. So, I took extra care with it. In 1980 Donner was married and Reiners came to him and said if he still wanted the car then Donner could come and get it. Donner had to wait a year but soon he was driving it home. My wife thought it was one of the ugliest cars shed ever seen, Donner said. But she was a good sport and it ended up in my garage. The big fins and the boat of a car was finally Donners and became a status in his family, however not for a few more years did he really display the car. I called it my 50-yard car because at 50 yards it looked pretty good, closer than that, not so much, Donner said. It was his mission to fix it up and he set a goal with his son Ben that by prom hed have it fixed up and

Clara City Car Rally

People from miles around came to the Clara City Car Rally last Thursday evening to swap stories and admire each others vintage vehicles. Ice cream was served as people walked around looking into these beautiful cars and a bit of drooling was done by everyone.

drivable. In the fall of 1998 most of the repairs were done and Donner had it painted for prom, however it wasnt all the way completed. I was still putting things together as he was driving it down to pick up his date, Donner laughed. His daughter, years later, used it as her Just Married car. For 33 years Donner has owned Donnie Reiners car, 13 years longer the Reiners did and still its referred to by Donners generation and older as Rieners car. Donnie could have taken it with him when he wintered in Arizona and sold it for a lot more than he sold it to me for, Donner said. But he knew I wanted it and would take good care of it. A diamond in the rough, the car is very close to one of a kind. In all the shows Donner has been to hes never seen one exactly like it. Its only in the 1960s where the fins go up that high, Donner said. Unique in that way, Donners car get's a lot of head turning but not once has he had the inkling to sell. Its worthless really, Donner said. Something only has worth if you are willing to sell it, if I sold it Donnie Reiners would come out of the grave and strangle me. Donner would never risk that, plus for him its something fun to own from his past. Its a bit of history, something I grew up with and now its back in my life, Donner said.
