Operating instructions

User responsibility
Your fire alarm system should have been designed, installed and commissioned to your site specific requirements and in accordance with the requirements of BS5839 Part 1. You should have received instructions about your system during the handover stage and must make arrangement to ensure the system is regularly tested and maintained. It is recommended that the person responsible for the fire alarm system should ensure the system is tested and maintained in accordance with the requirements of BS5839 Part 1 and become familiar with:

A different manual call point of the

system should be tested to ensure the system is capable of operating under alarm conditions. The operation of the alarm sounders should be checked to remind those occupying the premises that there is a fire alarm system with a particular sound.

"

how to operate the controls and interpret

the indications given at the control panel keep up to date all documentation associated with the system.

Any servicing work on the Vigilon system must be carried out by a suitably trained person refer to your servicing organisation.
Daily
BS 5839:Part 1, states that the system should be inspected daily to ensure

&

The test should be performed at a regular time to avoid confusion between a test and a genuine fire alarm. The alarm receiving centre must be contacted before and after the test to check alarms are received and also to avoid unwanted alarms.

At quarterly intervals the system should be inspected and any work necessary should be performed by a trained maintenance engineer.

That the use of the area(s) inspected has not changed since the system was designed. That no unsafe practices that could lead to fire are being undertaken.

For help with service and maintenance please refer to your servicing organisation, see contact details entered in the log book.

one false alarm for every 20 detectors

It is recommended that the person responsible for the fire alarm system should arrange for suitable investigation and appropriate action on occasion of every false alarm. For a system having less than 40 automatic fire detectors installed, an in-depth investigation should be instigated on occurance of two false alarms in any rolling 12 months. For a system having more than 40 automatic fire detectors an investigation shoud be instigated if there has been:

Limitation of false alarm

When testing the system there may be a need to isolate ancillary outputs and to contact the alarm receiving centre before and after the weekly test.

Vigilon COMPACT
System control and indicating equipment
The events of fire, fault and disablements are indicated at the control and indicating equipment installed in the protected premises. The control and indicating equipment should be accessible to the person responsible for the fire system.

Control panel

The control panel is the heart of the system. It is normally located near to the main entry / exit point of the protected premises. The control panel continuously monitors devices that are connected to each loop cable. The loop cable is routed through the protected premises to cover all areas with both ends of the loop terminating at the control panel. Devices installed on the loop such as the fire sensors are constantly sensing the environment for fire, whilst the alarm devices provide alert and evacuations alarm to warn occupants in the protected premises in the event of a fire.

Repeat panels

Your system may have repeat panels installed to provide secondary indications and controls for the system. They are usually located near to secondary entry / exit points of the protected premises. The larger repeat panel has a similar appearance to the main control panel and provides both system indication and alarm controls. The smaller repeat panel provides only indications of events.

Mimic and zonal panels

There may be a number of mimic and zonal panels installed in the protected premises, to provide visual indications in a graphical or zonal format. Normally one is installed next to the main control panel. There may be additional panels installed in other areas of the protected premises. The smaller mimic or zonal panels may be used to cover sub divisions of the premises, while the larger panel may cover the entire site.

Operating instructions

Weekly test
Every week during normal working hours the fire detection and alarm system should be tested. It is important to inform the alarm receiving centre of the fire test. The weekly fire test can be carried out at a manual call point without breaking the call point glass. Insert the test key through the hole in the underside of the call point to engage the cam mechanism and push to operate the cam mechanism. This will activate the call point.

Keep it Simple
All Vigilon devices connect onto the same 2 core loop. No separate sounder or repeater panel circuits are required.

Save on Cable Costs

Cable runs are shorter. 2 core costs less than 4 core. Overall cable costs are normally 30% less than other systems.

NETWORK

Create Seamless Networks

Connect up to 50 panels together and retain control on large or complex sites. Also, new buildings or extensions are easily accommodated onto the existing system.

Customise your Fire Plans

Evacuating public areas or production lines is disruptive and costly. Vigilons powerful software gives you flexibility. Areas throughout the network can be sectored to evacuate, alert, or configured with pre-set delays.

Match Sensors to the Risk

Vigilon sensors have a wide range of sensitivities. Configuring the sensor is one of the most effective ways of reducing false alarms.

Combine Sensors and Sounders

Vigilons combined sensor sounders reduce hassle and save cost. Integral sounders are ideal for boosting sound levels without additional wiring.

Reduce Ongoing Costs

All sensors require regular cleaning from airborne contamination. Often the complete sensor will need replacing. Gent are the only manufacturer with disposable chamber elements to save maintenance costs.

Clear Information
64 character display means the user is not limited in describing the position or nature of an emergency. A clear backlit LCD display reduces confusion and speeds response.

Integrated Voice and Graphics Systems

Vigilon may be integrated with Gents Orator voice evacuation system. Or connected to Supervisor, a graphic display for single point control and monitoring.

Graphics & Voice Alarm

A Supervisor graphics terminal provides a single point display for control and monitoring. In an emergency the display shows the exact location of an incident on a floor plan. Vigilon may also be integrated with an Orator Voice Alarm System. In an emergency a voice message directs people to the nearest safe exit. Voice messages are particularly effective in buildings used by the general public. For further information on Supervisor or Orator please contact the Gent Marketing Department. FIRE ALARM SYSTEM LOG BOOK This Log Book should be maintained by a responsible person and every event, including Routine Tests, should be recorded. Regular servicing is highly recommended. Contact Sterling for details. It is the users responsibility to carry out, or have carried out, Routine Tests as specified below. It is recommended that the servicing be entrusted to a Fire Alarm Company who should carry out the Quarterly and Annual inspections. DAILY 1) Check that mains light is on and other indications are clear (off). Note any faults in the System Log and report the fault for action. 2) Ensure that any previous report has received attention. WEEKLY 1) 2) Check that all Panel indicators illuminate correctly and that the control internal warning sounds. Operate a Manual Call Point (with test key) or a Detector on a Zone (if more than one zone fitted) and ensure that the Sounders operate, and that the Control Panel indicates properly. Reset the System. Each week a different Manual Call Point or Detector should be tested on each Zone in rotation. Note: If the system remotely calls the Fire Services, this test should only be carried out with the co-operation of the Fire Authorities or by the Fire Alarm Company.

3)

Complete the Event Log: Enter Routine Weekly Test in the Event section and any defects in the Action Required section.

QUARTERLY 1) 2) Check entries in Log Book and take any necessary action. Inspect and test the following in addition to the items on the Weekly Test: The ability of the standby batteries to operate the System with the Mains supply disconnected. The battery connections and the battery condition. Test Control Mute and Sound Alarm operation. Simulate the following fault conditions: (i) 24V Fuse Failure (ii) Bell Fuse Failure (iii) Battery Fuse Failure (iv) Zone(s) wiring open and short circuit (v) Bell wiring open and short circuit Visually check that structural alterations have not been made which could affect the system. 2

3)

4)

Complete the System Log Book and complete a Certificate of Testing in accordance with BS5839.

ANNUALLY Inspect and test the system as in the Quarterly inspection. In addition, clean and test all detectors and Manual Call Points and check for damage to any devices and cables. Special equipment is required for cleaning Smoke Detectors. EVERY 5 YEARS Replace Sealed Lead Acid Batteries.
