Mobile Offshore Units - Rules for classification and construction Welding

1. Application
1

This standard is applicable to structural welding, as well as relevant components of mobile offshore units (abbreviation is unit) dedined in TCVN 5309:2001.

Structural welding as well as relevant components of the unit is comply with corresponding requirements in TCVN 6259-6:1997: Welding and requirements are mentioned in this part as well as standards, technical documents approved by VR .

Materials, welding methods ... having other features can be used if their specification and their usage is approved by VR. In this case detailed data relating manufacture procedure, their usage is to be submitted to VR for approval.

Details of joints

The details of joints are to be in accordance with part 6, Chapter 2, TCVN 6259-6:1997, as well as technical documents or rules approved by VR.

3.2.

Welding works and inspections

3.2.1. Welding
1

Welding works and inspections are to be carried out with adequate equipment and under quality control in accordance with the welding works specifications approved by 4.1.2-2 TCVN 6259-6:1997 before hand,

Welded joints in special and primary structures, welded assemblies of intricate shape or those with welded material 50 mm or over in thickness are to be heat treated after welding. The heat treatment procedures is to be determined by the manufacturer and agreed with the Rigister

simultaneously with approving the method of welding. Local heat treatment is subject to special consideration by the Rigister.
3

Welding under water is subject to special consideration by the Register.

3.2.2. Inspection of welded joints

1

For inspecting welding operations and welded joints the general requirement of 2.2.7, Part 6, Chapter 2, TCVN 6259-6:1997.

Inspection of welded joints in unit's structure is to be carried out by visual examination as well as by others nondestructive examination methods from the importance of the structure

Welded joints should undergo visual and nonestructive examination in conformity with Register approved technical documentation.

If heat treatment of welded assemblies is planned, the final nonestructive examination of welded joints should be carried out after it .

TCVN 5318:2001
5

The welded joints should be visually examined along their whole length. The welded joints in elements of primary and special structures which become in accessible or hard to examine during operation are to be examined by nondestructive methods along their whole length. The welded joints should be examined in accordance with Table Table 3.1. Table 3.1 Type and extent of NDT Minimal welded joints length to be examined in per cent of the whole welded joints length in particular structure

structures are devided into : Special : the structures bearing high stress such as self-elevating unit leg, connecting joins of braces of column stabilized units ... Primary: The structure quarantee general strength of unit such as hull platting ... Secondary: Structural elements of minor important, failure of which would be unlikely to affect the overall integrity of the unit such as superstructure, division bulkheads, ... The structural classification is the responsibility of the designer and agreed by VR from the concept design stage .

Notes: Depend on stress level, stress concentration condition and possibility of strength deterioration, the unit's

Inspections of butt welds, cruciform joints, and other jints with a high level of stresses as well as areas where automatically welded joints are started and left off should be examined by nonestructive methords.

TCVN 5318:2001
7

Welded joints in which stresses in the through-thickness direction can arise should undergo ultrasonic examination for detecting lamelled tearing which might come about after welding .

When non-permissible defects are being found out proceeding form the results of nondestructive testing, all welds carried out by a particular welded or using a particular welding method are to be examined.

When special structures are fabricated, the Register may require mechanical testing to be carried out on specimens machined from weld test assemblies fabricated by welding methods, with welding consumable and using welding procedures which are applied when welding the unit,s structures.

10 Vthe results of examining the joints welded under water is to be considered by the Register in each

case.

4. Test specimens and mechanical testing procedures

4.1.
1

General

Test specimens and mechanical testing procedures for various tests in this part are to comply with the requirements in Chapter 3, Part 6, TCVN 6259-6:1997.

Where specimens and mechanical testing procedures differing from those prescribed in -1 are used, they are to be approved by VR.

5. Welders and their qualification tests

5.1.
1

Gereral

Welders and their qualification tests are to comply with the requirements in Chapter 5, Part 6, TCVN 6259-6:1997.

Each welder intended to engage in the welding work specified in this Part is to pass the qualification tests required according to the applicable welding process and welding consumables to be welded and to be furnished with the Qualification Certificate issued by VR. Each operator intended to engage in the automatic welding operation is to be of an well-experienced welder for the specific welding work concerned.

TCVN 5318:2001 6. Welding consumables
