Bartelt is accused in the criminal complaint of causing the death of Jessie Blodgett,19, at her residence in Hartford on July 15. If convicted, Bartelt could face life in prison. According to the criminal complaint, an autopsy later determined that the victim died of ligature strangulation. According to the criminal complaint, Bartelt who was at the Washington County Jail when he was questioned by investigators after he couldnt post bail in the Richfield Historical Park attack denied any knowledge or involvement in Blodgetts death. When asked about his whereabouts on July 15, Bartelt said he was driving all over and ended up at Woodlawn Union Park in the city of Hartford. From page 1
from the beginning of the Hartford Police Departments investigation of Jessie Blodgett, Mr. Bartelt has been removed from our community and has been continuously and securely in police custody. Every day, between then and now, the case has been made stronger and stronger, and we have been prepared should he have been able to post bond on the Richfield incident that were going to put a hold on him with our investigation. Groves added that the evidence recovered from Woodlawn Union Park also linked Bartelt to the Richfield case. In his statement, Groves noted that Bartelts fingerprints were recovered from the Blodgett residence. He added that as the chief, as a member of Hartford, as a father, my heart and my thoughts and my prayers go out the Blodgetts. Hartford Mayor Joe Dautermann added that my heart goes out the Blodgett family our entire community is keeping them in their thoughts and prayers. This tragic incident is a reminder that bad things can and do happen everywhere. Every citizen needs to keep their safety and security in mind at all times, Dautermann said.

Daniel Bartelt
Dautermann noted that the homicide is the first one in the city in 15 years and only the third homicide in Hartford in 100 years. Dautermann encouraged residents to be looking for suspicious activity and report it to law enforcement activities. Immediately after the initial court appearance, Gary Schmaus, the attorney representing Bartelt, said Bartelts parents are shocked and devastated by these allegations.

Bring the outdoors in

By Tresa Erickson With temperatures heating up, you are spending more and more time outdoors. Youre working on your flowerbeds, sprucing up your garden shed and more. Oh, how you love the warm weather. It makes you want to throw open your doors and windows and bring the outdoors in. Lucky for you, you can. Here are some tips. Bring in the natural light: Replace those heavy window coverings with lighter ones wherever possible. Use sheers instead of drapes. Pull up those blinds. Clean your doors and windows, open them on good days and remove anything obstructing the view outdoors. Opt for lighter, earthier colors: Planning to do a little repainting this spring? Choose lighter, earthier shades, like greens, blues, browns and yellows. Any color that reminds you of nature will help bring the outdoors in. If you dont plan to repaint, you can still bring in natural colors by changing out accessories like pillows and throws. Add natural materials: Bamboo, hemp, jute, rattan, seagrass and wicker are just some of Mother Natures offerings you can bring into your decor. Replace your plastic miniblinds with rattan blinds, purchase some wicker baskets for your magazines and throw down a couple of seagrass rugs. Incorporate natural accessories: Mother Nature provides some of the best accessories around, from pinecones and seashells to pebbles and stones to fruit and vegetables. Incorporate these into your decor wherever possible. Trade in that artificial floral centerpiece on your mantel for a bowl of seashells. Add a tray of lemons and limes to your dining room table. Stack some rocks on your hearth. Entice the senses_Invoke the feel of Mother Nature everywhere you can in your home. Freshen the air with some woody incense, fragrant potpourri or fresh-cut flowers. Bring the sound of water to your space with a fountain or two. Hang some nature photos or murals. Although not real, a wall-size mural of a bamboo garden or a wooded forest can make you feel like you are right there in the outdoors. Go green: Anytime you make a new purchase, look for the most eco-friendly option available. When shopping for flooring, consider bamboo, cork and wood over man-made materials. When shopping for paint, look for brands low in VOCs, fungicides and biocides. Natural paint and milk paint are ideal. When shopping for linens, look for earth-friendly ones. Of course, one of the best and easiest ways to bring the outdoors is through houseplants. Accept all seedlings and shoots, visit your local nursery for other options and place all of your houseplants where they can be seen. It doesnt take much to bring the outdoors into your space. Start sprucing it up now, and when the sun goes down and youre forced to come inside, you might not mind it so much.

Fraley named recent DAISY award winner

Froedtert Health Community Memorial Hospital recognized Joani Fraley, registered nurse, as their third quarter DAISY award winner on July 23, 2013. Winners are nominated by patients to receive the honor. Fraley, a resident of Hartford, is a registered nurse in the Birthing Center and has been with the hospital since 2001. Her numerous nominations described Fraley as an amazing nurse, passionate about her health care role, willing to go the extra mile, understanding, trustworthy and most of all caring. DAISY, an acronym for Diseases Attacking the Immune System, recognizes nurses as unsung heroes of society who deserve more recognition and honor than they receive. More than 1,000 hospitals throughout the United States participate in the DAISY award program. The DAISY Foundation provides each recipient with a sculpture, A Healers Touch, that is hand-carved for the foundation by artists of the Shona Tribe in Zimbabwe. The sculpture is made of Serpentine stone that comes from the mountains where the most powerful shaman live in Zimbabwe. The foundation chose this design not only because it depicts the relationship nurses have with their patients, but also because the Shona people hold their healers in a position of great importance to the community and feel about their healers the way The DAISY Foundation and Community Memorial Hospital feel about nurses. Fraley was honored at a recent ceremony at Community Memorial Hospital, at which she received a certificate, pin and the sculpture. Unit staff and guests were treated to Cinnabons in accordance with the DAISY tradition.

Open houses benefit buyers and sellers

(NAPSI)The next time youre thinking about buying or selling a house, you might want to open your mind to the benefits of an open house. What Buyers Should Do Buyers should make the most of each open house they visit and remember to keep an open mind. Here are some tips for visiting open houses: Check everything in the house including appliances, the size of closets, storage areas and the views from the windows. Walk around the property and check such things as the brick and mortar and siding. Drive around the neighborhood and get a feel for the area. Talk to the Realtor hosting the open house and pick his or her brain about the condition of the home, recent upgrades and the neighborhood. What Sellers Should Do As a seller, an open house is about putting your homes best foot forward. Here are some tips for a successful open house: Declutter and clean the house. Replace burnt-out lightbulbs and wash the windows. Mow the front lawn and clean the walkway. Fix maintenance issues such as dings in walls or leaky faucets. Two More Things To Consider 1. Last year, 45 percent of all buyers used an open house as a resource in their home search process, according to the National Association of Realtors Profile of Home Buyers and Sellers. Open houses are a way for buyers to get an idea of what they can afford and what is available in their market. For sellers, its a chance to market the home and attract potential buyers. 2. Whether you are buying or selling, working with a Realtor is key. Some 89 percent of buyers purchase their homes through a real estate agent. Only 9 percent of sellers sold their home without assistance from an agent. Realtors have invaluable insights into what sells a home and are the most trusted resource for real estate information. They know what buyers value in their local markets. They can help sellers protect their investment and buyers build theirs.

(NewsUSA)Grandparents and grandchildren have much to learn from one another, and such valuable relationships should be cultivated. Oxford University research has shown that involved grandparents contribute significantly to better-adjusted grandchildren. The research suggests that children find unique acceptance in their relationships with grandparents, which benefits them emotionally and mentally. The grandparental bond is built on communication. In fact, most children studied did not identify distance as an important factor if communication was strong. Unfortunately, hearing loss is the number-one challenge to communication. According to the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD), age and hearing loss are strongly related30 percent of seniors from 65 to 74 years old suffer from a hearing disability. For adults 75 years of age or older, hearing loss jumps to 47 percent. "It doesn't take a PhD for my patients to understand the many costs of hearing loss," says Sreek Cherukuri, MD, a certified ear, nose and throat physician based in Chicago, Ill. Beyond emotional well-being, even something simple like taking the grandkids to the pool can turn dangerous if grandma can't hear possible cries for help. Driving puts the children at risk if the grandparents cannot hear oncoming traffic or car horns. The NIDCD reports that only one out of every five people who needs a hearing aid actually wears one. This is

largely due to the extravagant cost of most hearing aids. "I found that I saw too many patients with hearing loss going home without a solution because they couldn't afford hearing aid prices," says Dr. Cherukuri. Cherukuri's response was to develop inexpensive but effective hearing aids. "With today's technology, a quality hearing aid shouldn't cost more than a digital camera or iPod," Cherukuri says. MDHearingAid, found at www.mdhearingaid.com, isn't just a reliable source for affordable hearing aids, it's also a good source for expert consumer information. "You should see a physician and get the best hearing aid you can afford. We offer an excellent choice for those who cannot afford a custom hearing aid." Seniors should enjoy the benefits of their ripe age. This includes plenty of quality time with grandchildren.
