Dear Professors, Dear Department Chairs: The European Academy of Facial Plastic Surgery (EAFPS) wishes to bring one of its key endeavours to your attention. EAFPS enhances surgical training in facial plastic surgery (FPS) in Europe by offering a FPS Fellowship. EAFPS has invested substantially in its fellowship program over the past years. Currently, EAFPS offers a 12-month fellowship to candidates who have completed their speciality training. The fellowship is open to board certified otolaryngologists and plastic surgeons. The particular strengths of the program lie in the fact that the fellows will pursue their studies in facial plastic surgery in dedicated centres, fulltime and strictly protected from other commitments. The fellowship entails sitting the exam of the International Federation of Facial Plastic Surgery Societies (IFFPSS). This model has been adopted from the United States and has proven very successful. At present the IFFPSS exam is not available to oral and maxillofacial surgeons (OMF) and consequently EAFPS can currently not offer the fellowship training to OMF. EAFPS actively pursues future inclusion of OMF in the fellowship training program and dedicates important resources to resolving this unfortunate situation. As multiple early fellowship candidates communicated that they were unable to apply for the fellowship because of financial constraints, EAFPS now offers fellowship stipends of 15,000 annually. Since the initiation of the funded fellowship program, the quality of the applicants has improved impressively. One additional obstacle that some applicants face is the inability to return to their home program or their hesitation to terminate their employment contract. You in your function as Department Chair and as recognized opinion leader could contribute substantially to further enhancing surgical training in facial plastic surgery by encouraging and supporting possible candidates in your program. EAFPS is convinced that with your support the continued success of the fellowship program will contribute to a higher level of training in FPS. EAFPS would also like to draw attention to the opportunity of providing fellowship training. Fellowship training centres provide for advanced training in facial plastic surgery as well as for research and study. Provision of a training centre requires the allocation of resources and
