Casual Gallery Assistant Job Description

Part Time 6.08 an hour


Purpose of the Job The Gallery Assistant is responsible for assisting the Gallery Manager and other staff running the Craft Shop and gallery. They will also work regularly with the Director, Curators and other members of the team. Main Responsibilities Maintains the highest standards of customer and visitor service ensuring all visitors enjoy their visit to the Gallery and will recommend it to others. Provides information to visitors about the exhibitions and education programme. Listens and responds to various visitor comments and concerns and reports these to the Gallery Manager for evaluation or action. Follows Gallery policies and procedures when interacting with visitors. Offers assistance to visitors who may require help in, for instance, using the lift. Takes bookings for events. Promotes and manages the sale of shop stock and exhibits. Handles cash and credit/debit card sales, cashing up, banking and maintains the security of cash. Manages the reception desk including answering and directing incoming phone calls. Secures and alarms the building when required. Assists with the safety of staff and visitors in the Gallery and at off-site projects, including assisting visitors in emergency situations and fire drills. Reports problems, suspicious visitors and public safety hazards to the Gallery Manager or a senior member of staff. Provides security for exhibitions including reporting any incident involving visitors touching or damaging art work. Helps on occasion with the installation of exhibitions under the supervision of the Gallery Manager or the Curator. Assists with the running of events at the Gallery including setting up equipment. Assists with Gallery administration, for example compiling data on visitors and exhibitions, filing, photocopying, research and assisting with mail outs. Undertakes light cleaning. Other duties as assigned by the Gallery Manager, and the Director, in the absence of the former.

Person Specification Essential Excellent communication skills. A friendly communicative manner, flexible, willingness to accept responsibility, and ability to work on their own. Good team worker. Experience of cash handling. An enthusiasm for contemporary visual art and craft. Experience in dealing with the public. Good word processing and desktop computer skills including Microsoft Excel and Word 2007, email and internet. Willingness to receive further training. DIY or AV technical skills. Availability to work casual hours, as and when required by the Gallery

Desirable A good understanding of contemporary visual art and craft. Retail and customer service experience Experience of working with artists. First aid training.

Other The post is responsible to the Gallery Manager The probationary period for the post is two months unless otherwise stated in the letter of appointment. Notice period is one month.
