High School Genre Analysis

Jaime left the basketball game late and proceeded to walk to her car, located in a dark parking lot. She could not initially see her keys in her purse, and because it was late, she began to panic and worry that she might have left them in the gym. She frantically began to search through her purse in desperation. After a few moments she stopped and began to cry. She decided to reach into her pocket to get her cell phone to call her mother to pick her up, when she noticed her keys were in her coat pocket. Relieved she found her keys, she drove home. Based on this story, describe the physiological responses occurring in Jaimes body by using the following terms in your explanation: Parasympathetic nervous system Sympathetic nervous system Somatic nervous system Motor neurons The text above is an example FRQ question from my high school AP psychology class. FRQ questions are short answer/essay question that were given to us basically to test our ability to apply the information we had learned in class to real world situations. In this case Interneurons Sensory neurons Central nervous system

Gabrielle Boyd Professor Ingram ENG 1101-04 August 03 2013 my teacher Mrs. Freund is the author of this piece while all of her students taking this class are the readers. Since we answered these questions for test purposes, the authors purpose would be to test our knowledge as students learning this material. Her action as the author is to pose a scenario for us to apply what we have learned in class to an actual situation. This piece was created for a testing situation to test of retention of the newly learned information. The rhetorical triangle comes in to play connecting the audience, author, and purpose which would add to create and easily understood prompt for the readers but still fulfilling the purpose of testing the class material. When trying to understand the author it is a bit easier when the author states Based on this story, describe the physiological responses occurring in Jaimes body by using the following terms in your explanation. From this statement we can see the authors purpose which is to see if the students can correctly use the terms given to describe what is taking place in that scenario. Since I was the reader of this question at one point, I can easily understand that the reader is a student. I could also infer that since there is a question asked at the end of the description, a student is being asked the question. The last sentence which I quoted previously can help us to understand the authors purpose. Since the author comes straight out and states the question of what she is looking for, we can see that the authors purpose was to create a prompt that her students can answer to show their understanding of the test material.

Gabrielle Boyd Professor Ingram ENG 1101-04 August 03 2013 I feel that after analyzing this prompt, the audience could be successfully reached. There are probably some reasons why the audience could not be reached for instance, if a student didnt study then they could not be reached successfully. In most cases though since the scenario is clearly explained and the question being asked is clear there should be no problem with reaching the target audience.
