Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, We are so happy to announce the birth of Shane's new baby sister, Misty Dawn. Because of complications, she had to be taken by Caesarean section. After several days, because Virginia was so weak from loss of blood and could not nurse the baby properly, she was given a blood trans

We were also asked to give otir program to a group of lepers. Each of us missionaries has preached to these lepers at some time in the past, so we were happy to be able to help in this way, too. Since the program was one that had been prepared
for the Shih Lin Church, it was very easily adapted to these other groups too. We pray that God was able to use the presentation

fusion. Our fellow missionary, Ted Skiles, having the same blood type, graciously volunteered a pint of his blood for the
transfusion. We thank the Lord for such wonderful co-workers in His work!

Misty was born 5 weeks early, so she had to live in an incubator for 2 days. After a week in the hospital Virginia was ready to go home, but Misty had lost weight instead of gaining. She and the baby had to

we've ever had in our home at one time. In

remain in the hospital until 3 days later when the baby finally began to gain weight. Now, 10 days after the operation, both Mother and Daughter are doing fine,
thanks to the Lord and His wonderful grace.

We hope you all received one of the joint newsletters we sent out around Christmas telling of the work that each of our missionaries here in Taiwan is doing. If you enjoyed this annual newsletter, please let us know so we can know if we should do it each year or not. During the holidays the Lord opened several doors of service to us. As a group, we missionaries were asked to put on a Christmas program for a Chinese prison. We performed before an audience of 800 men. We were very well received. Not only were we promised an opportunity to come back, but as a result of this program Alan Bemo was given the opportunity to be the chaplain for the American men who are in this prison. At this time there are 4 Americans in the prison and Alan has visited them several times trying to help them in their spiritual need.

In February we were very happy to have a guest in our home. Pat Kenny, from California, was returning home from Rhodesia, where she worked in a hospital training the native girls how to do her particular laboratory work. We pray that
the Lord will continue to use her wherever

she goes.

We are still in language school. I am hoping to finish the major part of my study by October. At that time, we know the Lord will have opened a door of service for us. However, we plan to continue to study the language one or two hours a day to help
increase our effectiveness with the

Chinese people. Thank you all very much for your

prayers, financial support and your letters during the past year. We hope and pray that you will continue to share our ministry through this coming year. May
God bless you all is our constant prayer.
Love in Jesus,

Sam, Virginia, Shane, and Misty.

been a long time since I've talked to you.

All around the city of Taipei are
mountains. These mountains are

beautiful. On some you can see towns, on

others, roads leading to the other side. But on some you can see funny shaped white "thingies". These are the graves of the Chinese people. You can see from the picture, the

elaborate preparation for the burying of a loved one. Instead of saying, "we going to
the cemetery", they say "we going to the
mountain."

I asked why the grave was this par ticular shape. Nobody could tell me. One day, when I was reading, I found the an
swer. It all goes back to dear 'ole Con-

fucious and one of his famous sayings.

"Man must go back the way he came." the

Chinese took him to mean it literally. They

shaped their graves as an open womb
ready to receive back what it once ex pelled. I believe Confucious had no in

tention of starting anything so traditional as the shape of the grave one is to be

buried in. He had no intention of starting a

new "philosophy-religion". His followers

made him the object of worship because of his many so called "wise" sayings.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Hi! We pray that the Lord is blessing you richly as he is us. We thank Him each day for His wonderful love and mercy
toward us.

Let me try to quickly bring you up to date. In March, Alan Bemo and I were

approached by a Chinese preacher from Kaohsiung, at the southern part of the island. He was planning to go to Malaysia
and needed someone to take care of the

church for him. It is an independent church and he did not want it to go to some denomination. Alan is already
committed to another church here in

Taipei, so I said that I would like to help. So Alan and I went to this church in April and held a three-day meeting. We were

really happy with the results of this meeting. It was not a revival meeting (as every member is a Christian), but rather a meeting to tell them where we stood in relationship to Christ, His church, and
the Bible. We were really thrilled with the response. They agreed with our position and also said they would like to have more Bible teaching. As I am still in language school, we could not yet move down and work fulltime with this church. But beginning in

We had camp this year at Gu Gwan, on the East-West highway between Taichung and Hualien in the central part
of the island. We had around 40 students

from here and I had to go by train. It takes 5 to 6 hours and is a very tiring trip. So at the present time, I am going down once a month. Alan and Chuck are hoping to encourage one or two of the preachers
in this area to share with us in this

river that flows beneath the camp. This was the first time anyone ever accepted Christ and was baptized during camp. Many others had been baptized shortly

after or as a result of first being in

terested in Christ at camp, but this was the first time anyone made this decision

ministry until January when we plan to

move down. Please pray for this congregation. The church group on Saturday night averages around 15.

during the camp period. But the next day,

the same river that had seen a new life

begin, also claimed the physical life of

one

of our other

students.

Alan

had

rescued the boy from the river and given him artificial respiration. He seemed to be okay. They took him to the hospital. The doctor said they had better give him
oxygen and as soon as the tubes were

inserted into the boy's nose he died. It was the first time tragedy has entered
one of our camps like this. We would ask

for your prayers for these young people

because this incident has started a lot of

them to thinking about life and death and most important, their relationship to
Jesus.

them.

Shane's birthday party!

May 13 was Shane's birthday, he was 3 years old. We had a party for him and

invited all the missionary kids his age (they were all girls!). Misty is now 5 months old and is strong as an ox. Molly Johnston held her the other day and said, "What's the matter with that girl? Most babies that age like to be cuddled, all she
wants todois stand up and look around!" We are real happy she is growing so well,

After moving down to Kaohsiung, we plan to work there for about a half year. We plan to return to the States next summer, on furlough, either May or June. Please be in prayer as we prepare to return home that the Lord will provide the things we need, as we know He will. Well, must go for now. We remember you in our prayers. May God bless and keep you safe. Love in Jesus, Sam, Virginia, Shane and Misty
