Institution of Engineers (India)

Basic Electronics Contest

We have created a new website www.eeeie.webs.com for institution of engineers for Electrical and electronics engineering in Thiagarajar College of Engineering. The questions for this contest are available in this site. Also suggestion for the development of this site is welcome.

Guidelines:

Maximum two per team. Submit the answer to the following mailed ietceeee@gmail.com, with your Name, Year and Section written on the answer paper. Submit the answer sheets to final year IE coordinators only. Submit your answer sheets on or before 24-11-2010 (Wednesday), 4:30PM. Try to give as much explanation as you can for the questions. For some questions you are required to design circuits. In those cases give clear explanation of how your circuit works.
For any queries contact R.AZHAGESAN(9751222249),Final Yr, EEE. M.NILESH TAWRI(9840850372), Final Yr, EEE.

Question 1:
How can we convert a JK flip flop into SR flip flop and vice versa, a SR flip flop into D or T flip flop and vice versa?

Question 2:
What value of series resistance is required when three 10W,10V,1000mA zener diodes are connected in series to obtain a 30 volt regulated output from a 45 volt D.C power source?

Question 3:
Do free electrons and holes in a semiconductor individually contribute to current flow so that the net current is the sum of these two currents?

Question 4:
Which has higher switching speed MOSFET(or)BJT ?explain why?

Question 5:
Why OPAMPs are called linear devices. Are they always linear?

Question 6:
We know that in an OPAMP as inverting and non inverting amplifier we speak about virtual ground. Explain what virtual ground and how it is actually formed. Try to give mathematical explanation also.

Question 7:
How SRAM faster than DRAM?Explain?

Question 8:

Why the output junction in a BJT in all biasing configurations (CE,CC,CB)is reverse biased in the active region? If the output junction is forward biased ,Why does the output current increase?

Question 9:
What is the difference between TTL logic and CMOS logic is mostly preferred over TTL logic? explain?

Question 10:
Can a 9V battery charger be used to charge a 9.6 V battery `pack? Explain?

Question 11
Is it possible to display the result on a 7 segment LED display wirelessly to another 7 segment LED display a few meters away ?explain?

Question 12:
Consider a NPN BJT whose base width can be varied .Explain how the alpha & beta of the transistor will vary for the variation of the base width.

Question 13:
What is the difference between wien-bridge oscillator & colpitt oscillator and where wien-bridge oscillator is used? And where colpitt oscillator is used? Design the RC elements of wien-bridge oscillator for operation at output frequency=10KHz?

Question 23:
Do conductor have holes ? explain?

Question 24:
It is stated in books that, when the Alternator is supplying a load which consumes lagging reactive power the terminal voltage falls. The explanation given for this phenomenon is that Terminal voltage drops due to the demagnetizing effect of the lagging current drawn by the inductor. Now consider an Inverter which is being supplied by a battery. Now consider that I'm adding inductive load to the Inverter. Now whether the terminal voltage will decrease or remain the same?

Question 25:
In the following diagram the left picture is an Op-amp and the right side picture depicts the equivalent circuit of an Op-amp. As you can see it consists of two different symbols or entities (One has an O- symbol and the other - symbol). The following are the properties of those entities: They always occur in pair They cannot be realized individually in physical form Any circuit which is designed by these entities can be designed using electronic components Can you name those entities and describe their characteristics?
