Participatory Rural Appraisal Facilitators Training Workshop Rationale A 1997 study conducted by the Silliman University Marine Laboratory

had found out that there are 25 mangrove species under 13 families in Maribojoc Bay which makes the mangrove forest the second most diverse mangrove stand in the Philippines after Pagbilao, Quezon Province. Addressing the concerns of the existing Peoples Organizations in the community that a growing area of mangrove forest has been cleared out due to tree cutting and conversion of mangroves to fishponds, the Participatory Research, Organization of Communities, and Education towards Struggle for Self-reliance (PROCESS) BOHOL, Inc. proposed a one-year research initiative designed to re-assess the biophysical resources of CBFMA 1 designated areas abutting Maribojoc Bay. The Project aims to come up with a comparative Mangrove Ecosystem data (1997 and 2013) specifically in the 3 CBFMA areas located in Upper dela Paz, Cortes, Bohol and Barangays San Vicente and Dipatlong of Maribojoc, Bohol. To achieve this, a local research team consists of representative from the 3 PO partners [especially; Upper dela Paz Biodiversity Conservation Association (UBCA), San Vicente Mangroves Association (SAVIMA) & Dipatlong Mangrove Planters Association (DIMAPA)], Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), Office of Municipal Agriculture (OMAg), Bohol Island State University (BISU) and Barangay LGU must be formed to conduct a regular mangrove ecosystem assessment and monitoring. In this project, two major tools for research will be adopted to generate accurate data needed: the Participatory Rural Appraisal or PRA and the Resource Base Inventory or RBI. Hence, there is a need to conduct a training-workshop to build an effective team that is equipped enough to conduct the research. However, this workshop will only focus on the introduction of PRA methodologies for the baseline research. The goal of this workshop is to form a capable team to facilitate the research. Objectives: A. General Objective At the end of the three-day-training, the participants will be oriented on the PRA methods as well as build their capacities on PRA facilitation. B. Specific Objectives: 1. Fully understand the nature of the study. 2. Familiar with the PRA principles and concepts. 3. Identify the different tools and technologies in PRA 4. Experienced facilitation of PRA tools through simulation activity 5. Oriented on other research tools such as the PO profiling and generating secondary data 6. Learn about basic skills on workshop facilitation and documentation. 7. Clearly identify their individual roles and responsibilities in the research.
