BUSINESS OPPORTUNITIES IN EUROPEAN UNION
DR. Ion Voicu Sucala Associate Professor, Management & Systems Engineering Department, Technical University of Cluj-Napoca, Romania
Dr. Ion Voicu Sucala shared his thoughts and experiences in a lecture meeting held on March 16, 2011 at the Dr. K. L. Rao Bhavan, Vijayawada Centre. The European Union (EU) is an economic and political union of 27 member states which are located primarily in Europe. The EU has developed a single market through a standardised system of laws which apply in all member states including the abolition of passport controls within the Schengen area. It ensures the free movement of people, goods, services, and capital, enacts legislation in justice and home affairs, and maintains common policies on trade. With a total population of over 500 million inhabitants,in 2010 the EU generated an estimated 26% (US$16.282 trillion) of the global economy.
Economy:
The EU has established a single market across the territory of all its members. A monetary union, the eurozone, using a single currency comprises 17 members states. In 2009 the EU generated an estimated 28% share (US$ 16.5 trillion) of the world's nominal GDP, making it the largest economy in the world. It is the largest exporter, the largest importerof goods and services, and the biggest trading partner to several large countries such as the United States, China and India. Of the top 500 largest corporations measured by revenue (Fortune Global 500 in 2010), 161 have their headquarters in the EU. In May 2007 unemployment in the EU stood at 7% while investment was at 21.4% of GDP, inflation at 2.2% and public deficit at -0.9% of GDP.
Education:
In education, Erasmus Programme, a university exchange programme which began in 1987 has supported international exchange opportunities for well over 1.5 million university and college students and has become a symbol of European student life. There are now similar programmes for school pupils and teachers, for trainees in vocational education and training and for adult learners in the Lifelong Learning Programme 20072013.
Environment:
In 2007, member states agreed that the EU is to use 20% renewable energy in the future and that it has to reduce carbon dioxide emissions in 2020 by at least 20% compared to 1990 levels. This includes measures that in 2020, 10% of the overall fuel quantity used by cars and trucks in EU 27 should be running on renewable energy such as biofuels. This is considered to be one of the important aspects for industrialised region to fight global warming.

Jagadish Chandra Bose, (30 November 1858 23 November 1937) was an Bengali polymath: a physicist, biologist, botanist, archaeologist, as well as an early writer of science fiction. He pioneered the investigation of radio and microwave optics, made very significant contributions to plant science, and laid the foundations of experimental science in the Indian subcontinent. IEEE named him one of the fathers of radio science. He is also considered the father of Bengali science fiction. He was the first person from the Indian subcontinent to receive a US patent, in 1904
Crescograph
A crescograph is a device for measuring growth in plants. It was invented in the early 20th cetury by Sir Jagadish Chandra Bose. The Bose crescograph uses a series of clockwork gears and a smoked glass plate to record the movement of the tip of a plant (or its roots) at magnifications of up to 10,000. Marks are made on the plate at intervals of a few seconds, demonstrating how the rate of growth varies under varying stimuli. Bose experimented with temperature, chemicals, gasses and electricity. A Bose inspired modern electronic Crescograph was designed and built by Randall Fontes to measure plant movement at Stanford Research Institute. The Electronic Crescograph plant movement detector is capable of measurements as small as 1/1,000,000 of an inch. The component which actually measures the movement is a differential transformer.

Increase global temperatures are causing changes in climate which are resulting in:
1. Glacier Melts 2. Sea Level Rises 3. Intensified cyclones 4. Floods 5. Droughts 6. Vector Born Diseases
Glacier Melts:
1. Increase air temperature are causing glaciers melts, in north pole, south pole, Green Lands,himalayas..etc. 2. In India melting of glaciers in himalayas is going effect the river water resources of Ganga, Brahmaputra, and Yamuna.

Figure: Surface temperature anomalies relative to 1951-1980 from surface air measurements at meteorological stations and ship and satelite SST measurements
Intensified cyclones:
Increase sea surface temperatures are going to increase the evaporation rate on the oceans as a result more amount of moisture is going to enter into atmosphere, thus increasing the the intensity of the cyclones. In recent decades is has been observed that, though the number of cyclonic activities are less but cyclone life time on the oceans has increased.

Vector Born Diseases:
Higher air temperatures are providing required breeding grounds for vector born diseases like, malaria, dengue...etc. We as humans need to think and act so as to save our planet earth from global warming. Globally, many countries have started their initiatives to decrease global warming. Developed nations like Germany are generating power using renewable energies like solar power, wind power..etc. Many of the old highly polluting industries has been closed. Green taxes are being collected from transportation generated pollution, normal vehicles are being replaced with electric vehicles, Bio-fuel based vehicles. Most the waste generated is being either recycled / reused.Scientists all around the world are doing research on new methodologies / technologies to decrease this global warming like fuel cells, CO2 sequestration, alternative fuels...etc. But as a normal human being we can do something which will help us and our environment.
Save Energy:
1. 1 Liter of petrol used releases 2.6 Kg of CO2 2. 1 Liter of diesel used releases 2.3 Kg of CO2 3. 1 Unit of power production will release 2 Kg of CO2 4. 1 unit of power saved is equal to 2 units of power produced 5. Think before you use your vehicles and electrical appliances.
Plant Trees:
Plant trees, as trees absorb CO2 from atmosphere. Each Tree will absorb nearly 80Kgs of CO2 in its life period
