Features of An Excel Template for the Capacities of Bolts & Welds to BS5950-1:2000 by Dr Shaiq U.R. Khan BEng (Civil), MEng, PhD, PE, CEng, FIStructE January 2003 Techno Consultants Ltd, 117 Portland Street, Manchester M1 6ED, England.
Fasten5950
Fasten5950 is a an Excel Spreadsheet Template for finding capacities of Hexagon Head Bolts, Countersunk Bolts, High Strength Friction Grip Bolts, Fillet Welds and Butt Welds using BS5950-1:2000.. It also includes data worksheets for detailing bolts. The information includes: dimensions of bolts and nuts, washers, various bolt hole sizes, spacing of holes and back marks, bolt symbols, etc. The Tensile Stress Areas are taken from BS 4190 for Ordinary Black Bolts, BS 3692 for Precision Bolts and BS 4933 for Countersunk Bolts. The Tensile Stress Areas and Proof Loads for HSFG Bolts are taken from BS 4395: Part 1 for General Grade and BS 4395: Part 2 for Higher Grade (Parallel Shank). Scope & method details of various worksheets are described below.

User Notes for An Excel Template for finding Capacities for Bolts and Welds by Dr Shaiq U.R. Khan BEng (Civil), MEng, PhD, PE, CEng, FIStructE January 2003 Techno Consultants Ltd, 117 Portland Street, Manchester M1 6ED, England
Fasten5950
Introduction
Fasten5950 is a Template for finding the Capacities of Bolts and Welds to BS5950-1: 2000. The bolts can be Ordinary, Countersunk or High Strength Friction Grip Bolts. Welds can be Fillet or Full Penetration Butt Welds.
Using Fasten5950
Fasten5950 is used as a desktop reference. A designer can have it running as an Excel file and refer to it for finding capacities and detailing information for bolts and welds as and when required.
When use of a desktop computer is not available, Fasten5950 can also be used to print tables of bolt and weld capacities on paper. When used in this way, for example, a total of 216 tables can be produced for Non-preloaded bolts and 384 tables for the preloaded HSFG bolts.
Fasten595020030119
Design Method
The design method is based on BS5950-1:2000 and BS4604:Parts 1& Part 2: 1970. Various details are described below.
Non-preloaded Bolts: Grades 4.6, 6.8, 8.8, 10.9, HSFG General Grade & HSFG Higher Grade
The shear capacity Ps is calculated as: Ps = ps As where ps is the shear strength of bolts taken from Table 30 of the code, and As is the Tensile Stress Area of the bolts as specified in respective British Standards. The bearing capacity is taken as lesser of the bolt bearing capacity Pbb and the connected ply bearing capacity Pbs. The bolt bearing capacity Pbb is calculated as: Pbb = d tp pbb where d is the nominal bolt diameter, tp is the thickness of the connected ply. pbb is bearing strength of the bolt obtained from Table 31 of the code. When the bolts are countersunk, tp is taken as the ply thickness minus half the depth of countersinking. The depth of countersinking is taken as half the bolt diameter based on a 90o countersink.
When the Edge Distance e of a bolt hole in the direction of its bearing load is not less than 2d, the bearing capacity of the connected ply Pbs is calculated as: Pbs = kbs d tp pbs where kbs is a coefficient to allow for hole type and taken as: - for bolts in standard clearance holes kbs = 1 - for bolts in oversize & short slotted holes kbs = 0.7 - for bolts in long slotted and kidney-shaped holes kbs = 0.5 pbs is the bearing strength of the connected parts obtained from Table 32. When the end distance e of the bolt hole in a ply is less than 2d, the bearing capacity of the connected ply Pbs is calculated as: Pbs = 0.5 kbs e tp pbs where e is the end distance of the bolt hole. The tension capacity Pt of a bolt is calculated as: Pnom = 0.8 pt At as nominal capacity by Simple Method to Clause 6.3.4.2 Pt = pt At as tension capacity by Exact Method to Clause 6.3.4.3 where pt is the tension strength obtained from Table 34 of BS5950, and At is the tensile stress area as specified in respective British Standards.
Fasten595020030119
When the Edge Distance e of a bolt hole in the direction of its bearing load is not less than 3d, the slip capacity should not exceed the bearing capacity Pbg given by: Pbg = 1.5 kbs d tp pbg where pbg is bearing strength of the connected parts given in Table 32 kbs is the coefficient for the type of hole defined as above. (NB the code implies the use of this factor by referring to the usage of clause 6.3.3 but omits including it in clause 6.4.4) When the end distance e of the bolt hole in a ply is less than 3d, the slip capacity should not exceed the bearing capacity of the connected ply Pbs is given by: Pbs = 0.5 kbs e tp pbs The Tension capacity of HSFG Bolts Ptot is calculated as implicit in clause 6.4.5 of BS5950: Ptot = 1.1 Po for non-slip in service (but Ptot <= At pt) Ptot = 0.9 Po for non-slip under factored load where Po is the minimum shank tension as specified in BS4604, At is the tensile stress area and pt is the design tension strength of bolts from Table 34 of BS5950-1:2000.
Fasten595020030119
Fillet Welds
The strength of fillet welds is based on their throat thickness. By assuming that connected angle of the welded plates is 90 degrees, the throat thickness is taken as 0.7 times the weld size or leg length.
Using the Simple Method as per clause 6.8.7.2 , the weld capacity is taken as: Pw = 0.7 pw leg length /1000 kN/mm Using the Directional Method as per clause 6.8.7.3 , the weld capacities are taken as: PL = 0.7 pw leg length /1000 kN/mm as Longitudinal Shear Capacity PT = K PL kN/mm as Transverse Shear Capacity where pw is design strength in N/mm2 from Table 37 of the code for Electrodes Classes 35, 42 and 50 K is the enhancement factor for transverse loads, taken as 1.25 for plates welded at 90o to each other. To suit design needs, the user can change values of Fillet Weld thicknesses in the left column to any desired values.
Butt Welds
The strength of full or partial penetration butt welds is taken as 0.6 py in shear and py in tension or compression, where py is the design strength of the parent metal. Depending upon the weld thickness, the parent metal strength for steel grades S275, S355 and S460 varies and is obtained from Table 9 of BS5950-1: 2000. For Grade S275 and metal thickness up to 16, 40, 63, 80, 100 and 150 mm, py is 275, 265, 255, 245, 235 and 225 N/mm2 respectively. For Grade S355 and metal thickness up to 16, 40, 63, 80, 100 and 150 mm, py is 355, 345, 335, 325, 315, and 295 N/mm2 respectively. For Grade S460 and metal thickness up to 16, 40, 63. 80 and 100 mm, py is 460, 440, 430, 410 and 400 N/mm2 respectively. To suit design needs, the user can change values of Butt Weld thicknesses in the left column to any desired values.
