SURVEYING

1. (a) a) Explain clearly the points of difference between the prismatic compass and Surveyor’s
compass.
(b) What are the sources of errors in compass Surveying and what precautions are to be taken
to eliminate them. [8+8]
2. (a) Explain compensating and cumulative errors in chain Surveying.
(b) What are the Survey stations. How will you select them.
(c) A Survey line CD intersects a high building. To prolong the line beyond this obstacle, a
perpendicular DE, 200m long is set out at D. From E, two lines EF and EG are set out at
angles of 450 and 600 with ED respectively. Determine the length of EF and EG in order
that the points F and G may lie on the prolongation of CD, and also find the obstructed
length DF. [4+4+8]
3. During a construction work, the bottom of a sunshade A was taken as a temporary B.M having
R.L=63.120m. The following readings were taken:
Inverted staff reading on B.M
at A = 2.232 m
Reading on peg P on ground = 1.034m
change of instrument
[Reading on peg P on ground = 1.328]
Invered staff reading on the bottom of cornice B=4.124m
Enter the readings in a level book page and calculate the R.L of cornice B. Use H.I method.

4. (a) List the general methods of calculating are as,
(b) Explain any one methods giving its advantages, limitation and suitability for a given type
of work. [4+12]
5. Give a list of the permanent adjustments of a transit theodolite and state the object of each of
the adjustment. Describe how you would make the trunnion axis perpendicular to the vertical
axis. [16]
6. (a) How will you find the constants of a tacheometer?
(b) What is an analytical lens? Establish the basic equation for an anallactic lens.

7. (a) Why are the curves provided. Explain different types of curves with neat sketches.
(b) Two straights intersect at a chainage of 3500.5m with an angle of intersection of 1560 .
These two straights are to be connected by a simple circular curve of 200m radius. Cal-
culate the data necessary by the method of offsets from the chords produced with a peg
interval of 20m. Explain the procedure to set out the curve. [7+9]
8. (a) What is Geodetic Surveying? How it is different from Plane surveying.
(b) Explain the importance of electronic surveying in the field of surveying. [8+8]

1. (a) What is local attraction. How is it detected and removed.


(b) What do you understand by closing error of a compass traverse. Show how can it be
adjusted by graphical method. [8+8]
2. (a) Explain the terms : Check Line, Base Line, Tie Line, and oblique offset.
(b) Find the maximum length of offset so that the displacement on paper from both sources
of error does not exceed 0.2 mm given that the offset is measured with an accuracy of 1
in 25 and the scale is 1cm = 50m. [8+8]
3. Explain the following terms:
(a) Height of instrument
(b) Back sight
(c) Foresight
(d) Intermediate sight.

4. A road embankment 40m wide at the formation level with side slopes .1 to1 and with an average
height of 15m is constructed with an average gradient of 1in 40 from the contour of 150m to
590m. The ground has an average slope of 10 to 1 in the direction transverse to the centre line.
Find the
(a) length of the road
(b) volume of embankment. [16]
5. The top of a hill subtends an angle 90 30’ at a point A. the same point on the top of the hill
subtends an angle of 120 30’ at a point B which is in direct line joining point A and the top of
the hill. Distance AB was measured and found to be 1600 m. Determine the elevation of the
top of the hill and its distance from point A, given elevation of point A is 430.650 m. [16]
6. A tacheometer was set up at a station A and the readings on a vertically held staff at B were
2.255, 2.605 and 2.955, the line of sight being at an inclination of +80 24’. Another observation
on the vertically held staff at B.M. gave the readings 1.640, 1.920 and 2.200, the inclination
of the line of sight being +10 6’. Calculate the horizontal distance between A and B, and the
elevation of B if the R.L of B.M is 418.685 m. the constants of the instruments were 100 and
0.3. [16]
7. (a) What is meant by degree of curve. Derive its relationship with radius of curve.
(b) If the tangents to a circular curve having 500m radius intersect at an angle of 1200 and the
chainage of point of intersection is 1520.5m, calculate the different elements of a simple
circular curve. [6+10]

3. List the advantages and disadvantages of an internal focusing telescope. Briefly describe it. [16]
4. Find out the volume of earthwork in a road cutting 120m long from the following data:
The formation width = 10m
Side slopes = 1 to 1
Average depth of cutting along the centre of line = 5m
Slopes of ground in cross section = 10 to 1 [16]
5. The table below gives the lengths and bearings of the lines of a traverse ABCDEA, the length and
bearing of EA having been omitted. Calculate the length and bearing of the line EA. [16]

6. To determine the distance between two stations A and B, a tacheometer was set up at a point P on
the line AB and the following observations were made:
(a) When the staff was held at A
Staff readings = 2.225, 2.605, 2.985
Vertical angle = +80 240
(b) When the staff was held at B
Staff readings = 1.640, 1.920, 2.200
Vertical angle = −10 060
Also determine the R.L. of B if the R.L. of A is 315.673 m (k=100.00 and c=0.00) [16]
