1. (a) Derive an expression for the electric field intensity due to a finite length line charge along the
z-axis at an arbitrary point Q(x, y, z).
(b) Find the force on a 100µC charge at (0, 0, 3)m if four like charges of 20µC are located on x and
y axes at ± 4m. [8+8]

2. (a) State Ampere’s circuital law. Specify the conditions to be met for determining magnetic field
strength, H, based on Ampere’s circuital law

(b) A long straight conductor with radius ’a’ has a magnetic field strength H = Ir/2πa2 âφ within
the conductor (r < a) and H = (I/2πr) âφ outside the conductor (r > a) Find the current density
J in both the regions (r < a and r > a)
(c) Define Magnetic flux density and vector magnetic potential. [4+8+4]

3. (a) What is the inconsistency of Amperes law?


(b) A circular loop conductor of radius 0.1m lies in the z=0plane and has a resistance of 5Ω given
B=0.20 sin 103 t az T. Determine the current [8+8]

4. (a) For good dielectrics derive the expressions for α, β, ν and η.


(b) Find α, β, ν and η. for Ferrite at 10GHz ∈ r = 9, µr = 4, σ = 10ms/m. [8+8]

5. (a) State and prove Poynting theorem.


(b) In a non-magnetic medium E = 4 sin( (2π × 107 t - 0.8 × ) az V/m. Find
i. the time-average power carried by the wave
ii. total power crossing 100 cm2 of plane 2x+y = 5. [8+8]

6. Derive the expressions for the E and H field components for TE waves in a parallel plane wave guide,
using Maxwell?s equations approach. [16]

7. (a) A transmission line of length 70 meters is terminated in an impedance of ZR = 125 + j48.If the
frequency is 3 MHz and the characteristic impedance is 230 Ω , find the sending end impedance
using Smith chart, explaining the procedure.
(b) What is meant by inductive loading? With the help of suitable expressions explain the advantages
of loading and also discuss the disadvantages. [10+6]

8. (a) Derive a relation between reflection coefficient and characteristic impedance.


(b) Determine the reflection coefficients When
i. ZL = Z0
ii. ZL = shortcircuit
iii. ZL = open circuit Also find out the magnitude of reflection coefficient When ZL is purely

1. (a) Define conductivity of a material.


(b) Apply Gauss’s law to derive the boundary conditions at a conductor-dielectric interface.
(c) In a cylindrical conductor of radius 2mm, the current density varies with distance from the axis
according to J = 103 e−400r A/m2 . Find the total current I. [4+6+6]
2. (a) Derive equation of continuity for static magnetic fields.
(b) Derive an expression for magnetic field strength, H, due to a current carrying conductor of finite
length placed along the y- axis, at a point P in x-z plane and ‘r’ distant from the origin. Hence
deduce expressions for H due to semi- infinite length of the conductor. [6+10]
3. A square filamentary loop of wire is 25 cm on a side and has a resistance of 125Ω per meter length.
The loop lies in z=0 plane with its corners at (0,0,0) (0.25,0,0), (0.25,0.25,0) and (0,0.25,0) at t=0
the loop is moving with velocity vy = 50m/s in the field Bz = 8cos(1.5 × 108 t − 0.5x)µT . Develop a
function of time which expresses the ohmic power being delivered to the loop. [16]
4. (a) Obtain the relation between E and H in a uniform plane wave.
(b) A Uniform plane wave propagating in a medium has E = 2e−αz sin(108 t − βz)ay v/m. If the
medium is characterized by ∈ r = 1, µr = 20andσ = 3mho/m. f ind α, β, and H [8+8]
5. (a) State and prove Poynting theorem.

(b) Explain and sketch the nature of variations of attenuation with frequency in a parallel plate wave
guide for TE, TM and TEM waves. [8+8]
7. (a) An open-wire transmission line having Z0 = 650, −120 Ω is terminated in Z0 at the receiving end.
If this line is supplied from a source of internal resistance 300Ω , calculate the reflection factor
and reflection loss at the sending end terminals.
(b) A two wire line has a characteristic impedance of 600 Ω and is to feed a 180 Ω resistor at 200
MHz. A half wave line is to be used as a tube, 1.2cm in diameter .Find centre ?to-centre spacing
in air? [8+8]
8. (a) Give a neat sketch for a smith chart and explain clearly, step by step how would you use this
chart to
i. Calculate the complex reflection coefficient
ii. Transfer impedance from one point to other along the line.
iii. Determine the length and location of a short circuited stub line for impedance matching
purpose.
(b) Discuss the merits and demerits of stub matching techniques [12+4]

1. (a) State and Prove Gauss’s law. List the limitations of Gauss’s law.
(b) Derive an expression for the electric field strength due to a circular ring of radius ‘a’ and uniform
charge density, ρL C/m, using Gauss’s law. Obtain the value of height ‘h’ along z-axis at which
the net electric field becomes zero. Assume the ring to be placed in x-y plane.
(c) Define Electric potential. [6+8+2]

2. (a) Define magnetic potential, magnetic flux and permeability of a medium.


(b) Find magnetic field strength, H, on the axis of a circular current loop of radius ’a’, at a point P(
0,0,h).
(c) State the Maxwell’s equations for magneto static fields. [4+8+4]

3. In a source less medium the which J=0 and ρv = 0, assume the rectangular coordinates system in
which E and H are functions only of z and t. The medium has permittivity ∈ and permeability µ

(a) If E=Ex ax and H=Hy ay. begin with max wells equations and determine the second order partial
differential equation that Ex must satisfy

4. (a) Explain wave propagation in a conducting medium.

Determine the ratio of conduction current to displacement current compute the attenuation con-

(b) A plane wave traveling in a medium of εr = 1, µr = 1 has an electric field intensity of 100 × π.

8. (a) Explain what is meant by voltage reflection coefficient in a transmission line The voltage reflection
coefficient due to load connected to a lossless transmission line of characteristic impedance 100
Ω and working at 3 GHz is 0.5?450 . Assuming the load voltage to be 10 V, calculate the r.m.s
voltage and current at intervals of one ?fourth wave length from the load up to a distance 5 cm.
(b) A 75 Ω line is terminated by a load of 120 + j80 Ω . Find the maximum and minimum impedances
on the line. [10+6]

(b) Discuss the salient features and limitations of Gauss’s law .
(c) Derive Poisson’s and Laplace’s equations starting from Gauss’s law. [6+4+6]
2. (a) Define self inductance, mutual inductance and magnetic energy with the help of suitable expres-
sions.
(b) Calculate the force between two parallel conductors seperated by a distance, ’d’, currents carried
by the two plates being I1 and I2 respectively along the same direction.
(c) State Maxwell’s two equations for magneto static fields in integral and differential form. Also
give a word statement for both. [6+6+4]
3. (a) Derive the equation of continuity for time varying fields.
(b) A Parallel plate capacitor with a plate area of 5cm2 and plate separation of 3mm has a voltage
50 Sin 103 t V applied to its plates. Calculate the displacement current assuming ∈= 2 ∈0 [8+8]
4. (a) i. Define loss tangent
ii. Distinguish between conductors and Dielectrics
(b) A good conductor is plannar in form and it carries a uniform plane wave that has a wave length
of 0.3 mm and a velocity of 3 ×105 m/s assuming the conductor in non-magnetic determine the
frequency and the conductivity.

5. (a) Determine the condition under which the magnitude of the reflection coefficient equals to that of
the transmission coefficient for a uniform plane wave at normal incidence on an interface between
two loss less dielectric media. What √ is the standing wave ratio in dB under this condition.
(b) The reflected magnetic field Hr = − 2 mA/m. and the incident electric field in medium 1(free
space) is 1 mV/m. The medium 2 has εr2 = 18 and σ2 = 0. Determine the permeability of

6. (a) For a parallel plane wave guide having z-propagation, explain the nature of variation and sketch
the variation of E and H for T M10 waves.
(b) Explain the impossibility of TEM wave propagation in wave guides. [10+6]
7. (a) Explain the meaning of the terms characteristic impedance and propagation constant of a uniform
transmission line and obtain the expressions for them in terms of Parameters of line?
(b) A telephone wire 20 km long has the following constants per loop km resistance 90 Ω, capacitance
0.062 µF , inductance 0.001H and leakage = 1.5 x 10−6 mhos. The line is terminated in its
characteristic impedance and a potential difference of 2.1 V having a frequency of 1000 Hz is
applied at the sending end. Calculate :
i. The characteristic impedance
ii. Wavelength.
iii. The velocity of propagation [8+8]
8. (a) Explain the principal of Impedance matching with quarter wave Transformer?
(b) A 50 Ω loss less line connects a signal of 50 KHz to a load of 140 Ω. The load power is 75mW.
