1. (a) Explain, with the help of neat sketch, the graduations of a prismatic compass and a surveyour’s
compass.
(b) What is back bearing and what are the advantages of observing it in a traverse:
i. At a place the bearing of sun is measured at local noon and found to be 1750 150 , What is
the magnitude and direction of magnetic declination of the place?
ii. Show by a neat diagram the graduations on the circle of a prismatic compass. [6+10]
2. A base line was measured by tape suspended in catenary under a full of 145N, the mean temperature
being 140 C the lengths of various segments of the tape and the difference in level of the two ends of a
segment are given in table:

true difference in elevations of A and B.
(b) The staff reading taken on a staff held at a distance of 80 m from the instrument with the bubble
central was 1.455m. when the bubble is moved 6 divisions out of the centre, the staff reading
observed is 1.487m. if the length of one division is 2 mm, find the radius of the curvature, and
the sensitivity of the tube. [8+8]
4. Compute the area of cross-section if the formation widh is 12m, side slopes are 1 to 1, average height
along the center line is 5m, and the tranverse slope of the ground is 15 to 1. [16]
5. (a) Discuss the method of determination of the difference of elevations of the instrument station and
the top of a chimney when it is not possible to set the instrument at two stations P and Q in the
same vertical plane as the chimney?
(b) What is Gale’s traverse table? Discuss the procedure for recording the various entries in the
table? [8+8]
6. Derive expressions for the horizontal distance D and the vertical intercept V when the staff is:
(a) Vertical
(b) Normal. [16]
7. (a) A compound curve is to consist of an arc of 36chains followed by one of 48chains radius and is
to connect two straights which yield a deflection angle of 840 30’. At the intersection point the
chainage,if continued along the first tangent would be 86+48 and starting point of the curve is
selected at chainage 47+50. Calculate the chainage at the point of junction of the two branches
and at the end of curve?
(b) What are the different methods of designation of a curve? [16]

of intersection point B is 8248.10m, find the chainages of the tangent point and the point of compound
curvature?
(b) Derive relationship between the radius and the degree of curve. [16]

1. (a) Explain the principle on which chain survey is based.


(b) What are different methods of making linear measurements? Describe briefly.

2. (a) What considerations would you have while selecting survey stations and survey lines in a
chain survey?
(b) Write a short note on the marking of survey stations and referencing. [8+8]
3. The following consecutive readings were taken with a dumpy level:
1.895, 1.500, 1.865, 2.570, 2.990
2.020, 2.410, 2.520, 2.960, 3.115.
The level was shifted after fourth, sixth and ninth readings. The R.L. of the first point was
30.500. rule out a page of your answer book as a level book, and fill coulmns. Use collimation
system and apply the usual checks.Indicate the highest and lowest points. [16]
4. An area defined by the lines of a traverse ABCDEA is to be partitioned by a line XY,X being
on AB, and Y on CD, having bearing 198056.the area of XCDYX has to be 30300m2 . The
coordinates of the traverse stations are given in table: [16]

5. The top (Q) of the chimney was sighted from two stations P and R at very different levels, the
stations P and R being in line with the top of the chimney. The angle of elevation from P to
the top of the chimney was 380 21’ and that from R to the top of the chimney was 220 20’. The
angle of the elevation from R to a vane 2m above the foot of the staff held at P was 150 11’.
The heights of the instrument at P and R were 1.87m and 1.54m respectively. The horizontal
distance between P and R was 125m and the reduced level of R was 114.48m. Find the R.L of
the top the chimney and the horizontal distance from P to the chimney? [16]
6. (a) Determine the gradient from a point A to a point B from the following observations made
with a tacheometer fitted with an anallactic lens. The constant of the instrument was 100

1. (a) Explain the principle of chain surveying. In what conditions, the chain surveying is more suitable?
(b) A chain was tested before starting the survey, and was found to be exactly 20 metres. At the
end of the survey, it was tested again and was found to be 20.12 m. Area of the plan of the field
drawn to a scale of 1 cm = 6 m was 50.4 sq. cm. Find the true area of the field in sq metres.

2. (a) Describe various types of bearings.
(b) An offset is measured with an accuracy of 1 in 30 and the error in laying out the direction is 40 .
If the scale of plotting is 1 cm=20m, find the limiting length of the offset. [8+8]
3. Find the radius of curvature and the sensitivity of the bubble tube from the following:

object glass and trunnion axis of the tacheometer was 15cm. Calculate the stadia interval? [16]
