This event is a great time! Its virtually full contact golf as your competitors egg you on, sometimes in your backswing! Two-person teams alternate their shots while the high-scoring teams are eliminated on each hole until there are only three teams left. Out of those three teams, we will award a Win (1st Place), Place (2nd Place), and a Show (3rd Place). Serious golfers should leave their sensitive side at home for this event; we like to have fun!

This putting contest is a favorite among our residents. Test your putting skills on our ever changing 9-hole course and quench your thirst by sharing a keg of beer.

Mary and Carl Yaconelli

Mary and Carl lived most of their lives in the Sacramento, California area. They met while employed with the U. S. Air Force in aircraft maintenance. When their Air Force Base was designated for closure, they decided to retire rather than relocate. They both retired on the same day in 1999, Carl as a Section Chief for Industrial Training and Mary as a Section Chief for Aircraft Training. After living in Sun City Roseville for 10 years, they knew the lifestyle fit them, but decided the rainy, foggy winters were no match for the drier Arizona climate. Having visited the Phoenix area a few times while RVing, they checked out the newest Del Webb communities and immediately settled on Sun City Festival. Since they are both sports enthusiasts, they enjoy going to Diamondbacks baseball games, watching Suns basketball and Mary works at the Cardinals football games. Carl and Mary have both served as officers in the Players Club and participate in card games a few times every week. Mary has belonged to Lady Putters since the club was formed and has also served as an officer. They both enjoy the Social Dance Club for ballroom dancing. Travel is a definite interest, mostly cruises and day trips around Arizona. All of that leaves time for an occasional round of golf too! They didnt know anyone when they moved here in 2007, but everyone has been so friendly and welcoming! Since then, they have made many new friends, and try to pay that friendship forward to new residents, keeping Sun City Festival the place where everyone smiles, waves and new residents feel welcome!

The Most Important Meal Of The Day

We are constantly told breakfast is the most important meal of the day and we should never skip. Science may have finally proven it to be true. According to research published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, people who skipped breakfast even once per week had a twenty percent greater likelihood of developing Type 2 diabetes than those who ate breakfast every day. Data collected from more than 45,000 women over six years showed those who ate frequently (four or more times per day) but skipped breakfast had a greater risk for developing diabetes. Having a lower body mass index (BMI), whether or not a person ate breakfast, also seemed to help reduce diabetes risk. Skipping breakfast however, appeared to be even more harmful for those who are overweight. Additional research studying 29,000 men over a 16-year period found that those who skipped breakfast had a 21 percent higher risk for developing diabetes. Researchers guess that breakfast may play a role in holding blood sugar more stable over the course of a day. Other research showed higher insulin levels after missing breakfast, possibly leading, over time, to insulin resistance. In addition to diabetes risk, skipping breakfast can negatively affect mood, energy levels, and memory function until lunch or the first meal of the day. Bypassing breakfast has also been linked to abdominal weight gain, hypertension and metabolic syndrome. Metabolic syndrome is the existence, at the same time, of multiple conditions which can double heart attack risk. These conditions include: low HDL cholesterol, hypertension, high fasting blood glucose, and others. In addition to eating breakfast every day, other lifestyle practices can reduce risk of developing Type 2 diabetes. Both aerobic exercise and resistance training are critical to minimize insulin insensitivity. Avoid sugary soft drinks, candy and other highsugar foods. Maintain a healthy body weight. Eat a diet which consists primarily of lean meats and fresh fruits and vegetables. While scientists are still not totally sure of the mechanisms involved, a significant amount of long-term research with a large number of subjects shows eating breakfast helps stabilize blood sugar throughout the day. And, skipping breakfast can lead to development of Type 2 diabetes.
