Packaging

Packaging can be described as covering the

product with one or more suitable material for
ease of handling , transportation and marketing.
Packaging not only differentiates one brand from
another but also, At times, gives a purview of the
product being sold.
Packaging is defined as the “science , art
and technology of enclosing or protecting
products for distribution, storage , sale and use”.
Packaging also refers to the process of design,
evaluation and production of packages.
Packaging is often accompanied with attractive
and informative labeling. A package label is any
written , electronic or graphical message on the
container of the packaged product.

Indian packaging industry

History of packaging is as old as trading
of commodities. Earliest packaging of product was
done by natural materials. However with passage of
time and development of technologies significant
improvement were introduced in packaging also.
The notable facts are:-
• The Indian market for all types of packaging
material is estimated variedly between Rs280
and 300 billion per annum.
Of the above figure the consumer packaging
market has been estimated around Rs.140
billion per annum.

• Consumer packaging is highly fragmented ,with
only a small percentage of companies above
Rs.1 billion sales revenue.

• Bulk packaging is primarily in the small scale

sector ,mainly on account of the government
reservation policy for the SSI sector.

• In the packaging sector, there are very few

foreign firms operating in India on a joint
venture basis or as subsidiaries.

• On the packaging machinery side, while a wide

range is manufactured in India , the industry
also imports machinery, especially at the high
end.
