With Luke driving the business, Sara is free to focus on research & development and training. We are thrilled Moebius Syndrome Foundation awarded us a grant for a one-year study on the effectiveness of Oral Placement Therapy (OPT) for children with the diagnosis of upper facial paresis. The grant was awarded after a one-year pilot study was completed that indicated positive improvements in upper lip mobility, tongue lateralization , jaw grading and most importantly, in improved speech clarity and feeding safety. Clinical trials are nearing completion , and we look forward to reporting the findings in July 2012!

Please note: It has come to our attention that other companies are copying TalkTools products. The manufacturing of these imitations has compromised the quality and effectiveness of the therapeutic intent. If the product does not come with TalkTools instructions, please do not expect the same improvements in sensory, feeding and/or speech clarity.

Oral Placement TO Speech Kit (OPT-S) by Robyn Merkel-Walsh and Sara Rosenfeld-Johnson, is an innovative articulation program designed to translate muscle movements (from the Talk Tools Oral Placement Therapy hierarchies) into speech sound production. This program was designed specifically for individuals with MUSCLE-based speech disorders, such as low tone and dysarthria. Our card set is uniquely based on jaw transitions and the complexity of articulatory place shifts within words. Included in Kit No. 1 are the early developing phonemes m-b-p (bilabials), t-d-n (tongue retraction with tip elevation), k-g and h(velars) and w (lip rounding). The sounds are combined with an array of vowels in CV and CVC combinations. Each card set is divided into easy, moderate and difficult words based on transitions of the jaw, between the consonant- vowel and the vowelconsonant combinations. With each set we also have included Sara Rosenfeld -Johnsons outlined OPT Activities to help you transition muscle movement into improved speech clarity. OPT-S allows therapists to select words for practice based on phonemes and /or complexity. 185 cards are included along with detailed instructions for developing your clients individualized articulation program. Cards are colorful and appropriate for all ages across a variety of muscle based diagnoses. The concepts of warm up and target words , teaches therapists how to use speech clarity drills as an Oral Placement Activity. This product will be a must have to complete the sensory-feeding-OPT-speech hierarchy. (NOTE: For children ages 2-6 with apraxia , please refer to The Kaufman K-SLP Treatment Kit 1 (basic level) on page 24 of our catalog. OPT-S and The Kaufman K-SLP Treatment Kit 1 (basic level) compliment one another for children with complex speech clarity issues that involve both muscle and motor based disorders.)

Sara Rosenfeld - Johnson decided to make this DVD specifically for parents with questions about feeding safety and speech clarity. This DVD provides parents with a better understanding of the skills and techniques to help their child succeed.
# 6000210 $13.00
Sara Rosenfeld-Johnson M.S., CCC-SLP
I decided to make this video to help you, the parent, learn what you can do at home to improve your childs speech clarity and feeding safety. Over the years, I have found that parents can become great assets to their childs speech language pathologist, once they understand why they are being asked to perform certain homework assignments with their child. The exercises shown in this video are presented in a hierarchy of very small steps which will ensure that your child will not only make progress but will have fun doing so. This video is designed to not only show you what you can do to help your child, but also explains to you why you are being asked to use specific straws, horns or bite-tubes. In addition, watching this video will give you the knowledge you need to become a better advocate for your child, whether they receive speech therapy through the public school, early intervention program, clinic, hospital or private practice. Knowledge is a very powerful tool.
Sara Rosenfeld-Johnson, CCC-SLP Goals of Oral-Motor/Feeding/Speech Therapy - Increase sensory awareness and normalize tactile sensitivity - Teach more normal movement patterns - Achieve differentiation of oral movements - Enhance feeding skills for better nutritional intake - Improve speech sound production to maximize intelligibility

Nose Clips are excellent for those situations where the client with whom you are working cannot differentiate between oral and nasal airflow to successfully work through the Horn or Bubble Hierarchy. Oral Placement Therapy for Speech Clarity and Feeding
by
This is the first in a series of programs designed to teach standard speech sound production using a combination of traditional articulation therapy in conjunction with Oral Placement Therapy (OPT) activities. It is designed for clients who need auditory, visual, and tactile information to learn to use standard /s/ and /z/ in all speech environments. In this program you will learn how to: 1) perform an evaluation with a client who evidences an inter-dental or a lateral lisp; 2) write a complete Oral Placement/Movement for Feeding and Speech Evaluation; and 3) create and write a computer generated Report and Program Plan tailored to address your clients specific needs. Once this process has been completed, you will use the 20 lesson plans with associated Homework Sheets and Speech Practice Sheets to assist you in correcting your clients inter-dental or lateral productions. Each of the 20 lesson plans is divided into four sections: 1) Sensory, 2) Feeding, 3) Placement/Movement Activities, and 4) Speech.
IN THIS DVD YOU WILL SEE SARA ROSENFELD-JOHNSON PERFORM TWO ASSESSMENTS. READ THE REPORTS AND PROGRAM PLANS GENERATED, AND VIEW AFTER - THERAPY VIDEO CLIPS.

Sara Rosenfeld-Johnsons innovative tactile-sensory approach to speech therapy uses therapy tools to train and transition muscle movements for speech production and feeding. Learn how 40 highly motivating tactile based activities can be used to improve phonation, resonation, and the muscle movements necessary for speech clarity. Interactive, hands-on demonstrations will focus on therapeutically sound techniques to develop oral placement movements for improved speech clarity and feeding safetly evidencing a wide variety of diagnoses. Muscles of the abdomen, velum, jaw, lips, and tongue will be discussed within the parameters of movements necessary for speech production. Developmentally appropriate motor movements for speech are therapeutically targeted using highly motivating techniques appropriate for children and adults.
Oral Placement Therapy (OPT): Assessment and Program Plan Development (1.2 ASHA/AOTA Credits)
Learn how to perform a comprehensive evaluation for clients with sensory, feeding and/or speech disorders following the principles of Sara Rosenfeld-Johnsons hierarchical approach to oral placement assessment and treatment. This class will lead you, step-by-step, through the assessment process used with clients of varying ages and skill levels who evidence oral placement deficits. Participants will observe three complete assessment sessions with clients from infancy to young adults, and will learn how to identify oral-motor deficits that affect speech production. Development of therapeutic program plans designed specifically to meet each clients oral-motor needs will be addressed.
Renee Roy Hill discusses how many clients with a diagnosis of childhood apraxia of speech also have coexisting deficits which include sensory, feeding and oral-motor deficits. She addresses how implementing an oral-placement therapy program in a therapeutic hierarchy in conjunction with verbal and tactile techniques will improve speech clarity for clients with the apraxia diagnosis. Participants will learn specific techniques to bridge the gap between OPT and direct speech practice. Each therapeutic technique can be implemented in school and/or home environments.

This basic level kit contains 225 visual cards targeting the syllable shapes for /p,b,m,t,d,n,h/, the syllables children presenting with apraxia must master in order to become effective vocal/verbal communicators. The accompanying 52-page manual explains the Kaufman Speech to Language Protocol (K-SLP) methods and how to get children started combining consonants and vowels to form words. Each card displays a series of successive approximations of the target word based on least physiological effort. This highly effective approach quickly builds motor-speech coordination allowing children to begin progressing immediately from a simple core vocabulary toward becoming effective vocal/verbal communicators.
